Outdoor Burning Restricted In Island County Type I Burn Ban in Effect as of 12:00pm, July 7, 2017 PROCLAMATION and PUBLIC NOTICE WHEREAS, by July 7, 2017, atmospheric conditions of reduced moisture levels, low humidity, and warmer weather; combined with the reduced availability of fire-fighting resources, may cause a risk of fire within the confines of Island County, THEREFORE, in concurrence with the Fire Protection Districts of Whidbey and Camano Islands and the Northwest Clean Air Agency, I, Sheriff Mark C. Brown, serving as the Island County Fire Marshal, do hereby proclaim that a restriction on outdoor burning exists within the entirety of Island County, and that as of 12:00pm, July 7, 2017, all outdoor fires – even those previously approved by permit -- shall not be kindled, ignited or maintained.

Excepted from this Ban are outdoor recreational cooking fires contained within established fire pits – lined with metal or concrete, such as in improved campgrounds -- and cooking fires in barbecues. Self-contained camp stoves are also allowed.

Sno-Isle Libraries News Release: Enlist a little help to get ‘Beyond Bestsellers’ Grisham, Koontz, Rowling, Steel …

Been there, read that.

For readers who may even have the t-shirt, too, Sno-Isle Libraries has just the thing to break out of the bestsellers rut.

“Readers are always looking for something new without having to wait in line,” said Michelle Callihan, Managing Librarian at the Granite Falls Library. “It’s good to get outside your comfort zone now and then, but sometimes we don’t know where to start.”

To get the pages turning, Sno-Isle Libraries is enlisting its customers for help. The idea is to share favorite under-the-radar books as part of “Beyond Bestsellers,” the new community reading program that launched July 1 and runs through November.

“Each month, we will ask participants to create a list using the new catalog with 5-10 books they would suggest for each theme,” Callihan said. “Lists completed during the month may be featured on the blog on the last day of the month. Customers can vote for favorite lists by clicking the heart icon at the top of any list.”

The ability to create and share lists is a feature of the Sno-Isle Libraries online catalog launched this past winter. There are instructions on how to create lists. Participants should also be aware of all privacy settings in the catalog and that shared lists will be viewable by others.

“Readers should start a list title with ‘Beyond Bestsellers’ and then a subtitle,” Callihan said.

“For example, if I create a list of cozy mysteries, I might title it ‘Beyond Bestsellers: Cozy Mysteries.’”

Registration to participate in “Beyond Bestsellers,” is free and online. Use the library’s Ask Us, Tell Us feature for questions and comments.

Vacation Bible School at Coupeville United Methodist Church Coupeville United Methodist Church invites all children in the Coupeville community to soar with them at VBS Hero Central: Discover Your Strength In God. This superhero adventure experience includes music, interactive Bible fun, super science, cool crafts, handson mission hero work, delicious snacks, great games, and more. The fun runs from July 24 through July 28 at 9:30am to noon at the church located at 608 N. Main in Coupeville.

The 17th Annual DjangoFest Northwest Fans from across the country, Canada, and Europe will make the annual pilgrimage to the small seaside village of Langley, WA to experience DjangoFest Northwest (DFNW), September 20-24. Celebrating its 17th year, DFNW ranks among the genre’s top festivals in the world and is considered the “daddy” of the gypsy jazz festivals in the U.S. During the 1930’s and 40’s, Django Reinhardt and fellow musicians created gypsy jazz in the cafes of Paris. Also known as gypsy swing, gitan swing and hot club, this unique musical style blends Eastern European melodies, Parisian Musette, Spanish Flamenco and American Swing. The genre has experienced a renaissance of late, and devotees – known as “Djangophiles” - migrate to Langley to hear some of its biggest names.

“We’re inviting library customers to read along with us for the next five months as we discover new books,” Callihan said. “On the first of each month, we’ll explore a different theme, post reading suggestions on our ‘Bibliofiles’ blog (http://blog.sno-isle.org/bibliofiles/) and encourage customers to share their favorite titles.”

Located on Whidbey Island, DFNW is the perfect opportunity to soak up a week of gypsy jazz featuring world-class musicians in an idyllic setting. This year’s stellar lineup includes European artists: Samson Schmitt with Tim Kliphaus, Panache Weiss, Benji Winterstein, and Simon Planting; the Rosenberg family of Mozes, Arnoud, and “crooner” cousin Johnny, belting jazz standards with a touch of gypsy; Joshco Stephan, Olli Soikkeli and Julien Labro; the Robin Nolan Trio; and the return of Antoine Boyer with Samuelito.

July’s theme is “Mysteries,” followed by “True Stories” in August, “Westerns” in September, “Horror” in October (“Of course,” says Callihan) and finishing up with Graphic Novels in November.

Closer to home, DFNW welcomes Christine Tassan Et Les Imposteures from Canada; and from the U.S.: Trio Dinicu; Hot Club Sandwich; Hot Club of Troy; Black Market Trust; Occidental Gypsy; Eric Vanderbilt Mathews All Stars;

and the youngest performer and Northwest/ Saga Award Winner Henry Acker with his trio.

DjangoFest Northwest 2017 runs September 20 through the 24 and features eight concerts, 20 workshops, after-hours “djams” in downtown venues, spontaneous daily “djams” around town, and a free festival kick-off patio party featuring Seattle’s’ young hot swing band Good Company on Wednesday, September 20 at 6:00pm. Free shuttle service from WICA to downtown is provided by the Langley Chamber of Commerce.

Festival performances take place on the DFNW campus featuring two stages--a 246-seat venue and a 500-seat venue. Evening performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00pm, and matinee performances are Friday through Sunday at 3:00pm, with a final Sunday evening performance at 7:00pm. Island County Commissioners to Discuss 2017 Conservation Futures Acquisition Projects Since 1995, the Island County Conservation Futures Program has helped fund and maintain acquisitions and conservation easements that have protected over 3064 acres of open space, habitat, tidelands and farmlands to protect the rural character of Island County and provide recreational opportunities.

The Island County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will hold a public meeting at 10:00am on Tuesday, July 18, in the County Commissioners hearing room located at 1 NE 6th Street, Coupeville. The meeting is planned to review, discuss and take public comments on the 2017 proposed acquisition projects from the Conservation Futures Program.

The 2017 proposed acquisition projects include: 1. Project Name: Penn Cove Farms Conservation Easement Acquisition Sponsor: Whidbey Camano Land Trust Amount: $95,000 2. Project Name: Whidbey Institute Conservation Easement Acquisition Sponsor: Whidbey Camano Land Trust Amount: $200,000 3. Project Name: Barnum Point County Park – Final Acquisition Sponsor: Island County Parks Amount: $400,000 At the public meeting, the applicants for proposed acquisition projects will make presentations about their projects and answer questions from the BOCC. The BOCC will also take public comment about each project.

AARP Ranks Washington Best for Support of Seniors, Disabled Adults Sen. Barbara Bailey, co-chair of a legislative committee on aging and disability, said she is pleased that a recent report by AARP names Washington as the best state when it comes to addressing the care of seniors and adults with disabilities. Standards for the ranking included Washington’s affordability and access to care, family caregiver support and patient choice for care setting and providers.

“I recognize the challenges that families and caregivers face, having cared for an aging

www.whidbeyweekly.com LOCALLY OPERATED. parent myself, and was so glad in 2013 to help create our committee on aging and disability issues,” said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. “I’ve also proposed policies to help health-care professionals identify and respond to patient needs and expand protections and options for aging and disabled adults.”

AARP recently recognized Bailey’s legislative efforts related to aging-related issues, bestowing its Capitol Caregiver award on her this year. She sponsored the CARE Act in 2016, which expanded support for lay caregivers, and introduced four bills in the 2017 legislative session aimed at aging issues and hearing-loss intervention. Bailey also pushed for legislation that is now law to stiffen penalties for crimes against vulnerable adults. ·Senate Bill 5691 requires a court to consider less-restrictive alternatives to guardianship – such as power of attorney or a trust – to provide for the needs of impaired individuals. ·Senate Bill 5180 establishes a legislative advisory committee on aging to review issues of importance to the state’s aging community. ·Senate Bill 5177 requires long-term care workers be trained to recognize hearing loss in their patients.

“It is heartening to see that I’ve been able to play some role in helping our state’s aging population,” said Bailey. “AARP’s recognition of our hard work will hopefully help other states take similar actions to improve the lives of aging citizens.”

Local Business News Garry Oak Gallery Presents Art Remix Each artist at Garry Oak Gallery was asked to do an artistically different piece then they have ever shown in the gallery before and the results have created a very interesting show. Abstract Art Quilt Show at Penn Cove Pottery Against the Wall, an exhibition of textile wall hangings by the members of Fiber Optix, is on view this summer at Penn Cove Pottery, 26184 State Route 20, Coupeville, from now until Labor Day. Everyone is invited to meet the artists at the reception on Saturday, July 15 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.

Fiber Optix is a group of nationally and internationally recognized Pacific Northwest artists who make abstract art quilts. The work is built upon the foundation of traditional, utilitarian quilt making, but these contemporary artists use the tools of that tradition in order to achieve the same goals as all artists: self expression and the creation of meaningful works of art. The striking, colorful pieces in Against the Wall vary in size, but all are meant to be hung on the wall.

Work by local Whidbey Island artists Liz Axford, Marcia Derse, and Janet Steadman will be included in the exhibit, along with other regional Fiber Optix members Sandy Altenberg, Cher Cartwright, Nancy Cordry, Louise Harris, Janet Kurjan, Melisse Laing, Ellin Larimer and Barb Nepom. Sitting still, although still vibrating with that road feeling, somewhere between a bodily tinnitus and a plucked rubber band, seemed like a superb idea.

Two hours later, I was finally on the boat. Like John Lennon said regarding success, “getting there is better than being there.” A brief summary of my two hour wait follows. For those of you who enjoy Island 911, the first page to start reading each week, we shall employ a comparative time sequencing feature.

2:20pm-entered ferry line at elementary school using no parking zone 2:45pm-at Begin Ferry Line sign 2:55pm-at mile marker 8 sign 3:00pm-almost in shade but for line cutter who was just yelled at by woman in Acura RDX ahead of me 3:14pm-am now the designated third vehicle, in lane 24, by the fence for extended parking, near the porta-potties 3:15pm-Acura driver ahead of me off to ice cream, bathroom, or ferry person 3:48pm-windows down on truck due to excessive outdoor heat are now being rolled up due to some guy's too-close-to-my-big-nose cigar smoke 3:50pm-Acura lady opens trunk to show passer-by friend her new bag and basket from Ross 3:52pm-initiating prayer as ferry worker approaches 3:55pm-announcement about Clinton run and to return to landing 3:56pm-northbound train horn sounds 3:57pm-overhear man with poodle-like dog, talking to passengers in car, “We almost can't take a vacation because of the dog. You folks live on the island?”

When she breathes warm air and drools on my thigh while I am typing at a clean dining room table, do I say anything?

Dogs are like friends and family. When ignored, they will leave the room. Of course, like friends and family, when she does leave the room, I feel like I have done something wrong.

Last week, my niece Maddie said I evidence my insecurities by using heavy weight on my legs while I sleep. All this time, I just thought I was using those extra heavy blankets to keep from kicking over the boombox at the end of the bed.

While our nation's first amendment freedoms guarantee many wonderful freedoms, as individuals and unique creations, we are guaranteed the greatest freedom of all, the freedom of thought.

All attempts at global unity can never unify global thought. There is no one page with all of us page turners. Some of us folks even have glowing rectangles that turn their own pages. Not there yet, although the idea of enlarging my font size has some attraction if I can get past the feel of an electronic device with no pages.

One Christmas holiday, I received a phone message on my old cassette tape answering machine from a guy who said but six words–”I don't talk on them devices.” Click. Wonder if he has a smart phone today.

I love the fact I was blessed to be birthed by great parents, in a great country, in a great city, in a great neighborhood, at a great time. I love the fact I was taught great ideas by great teachers. I love even more the fact I can continue to learn new and greater ideas from even greater teachers.

In celebration of our independence, both as a nation, and as individuals, in our neighborhoods, within our communities, within our cities, and within our states, I am hopeful. I am thankful, and like you, I am trying.

Ferry Cross Returning from last week's glorious road trip, after enjoying light trafficked two lane back roads in Washington, I entered the ferry line at 2:20pm Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately, the line for the pre-Boeing packed Mukilteo-Clinton run was already up the hill to the elementary school.

Does she need anything? Do I dump out her green colored water bowl for cleaning, or is that liquid some chemical for the tomato plants?

8 oz. cream cheese 2 large dill pickles, chopped 2 tablespoons onion, chopped 2 tablespoons pickle juice 1 dash salt 1 teaspoon dried dill weed

Good things come to those who wait, and wait, and wait.

Mix all ingredients well, and chill for one hour before serving.

In dependence Our last four days of celebratory reminders of our nation's independence got me to thinking about my own. What else does a guy do while house and dog sitting but think? Think about it.

Apparently, dried dill is still the only legal weed in Mississippi for cooking and smoking.

New location for Cool Bayview Nights Car Show

By Kathy Reed Whidbey Weekly It’s the same great show, just a new location for the 12th annual Cool Bayview Nights Car Show, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8 at the Island County Fairgrounds in Langley.

Organizers say the car show and parts swap meet has grown enough to merit the move.

“The move was just at the right time,” said founder and event chairman Brian Grimm.

“The farmers market in Bayview has gotten so popular that there was not room to have both events on Saturday. The Port of South Whidbey was very inviting and the car show committee figured it might draw more entries and spectators.”

This family friendly event has added motorcycles and tractors to this year’s categories, along with all the cool classics people have come to expect. There will be more than 20 trophy categories, the winners all chosen by those attending the show.

The cost to enter a vehicle in the show is $20 in advance, $25 the day of the event. Active duty military and veterans get a $5 discount on their entries.

“This is the second annual street dance by the Langley Main Street Association,” said Lorinda Kay, LMSA program manager. “The street dance was part of the Choochokam music and arts festival for more than 40 years, and when they cancelled Choochokam last year, we brought it back.”

Admission to those who just want to attend the show is a suggested donation of canned food for the local food bank. As always, the proceeds from entries in the car show will benefit local nonprofit groups.

Folks will literally be dancing in the street Saturday, July 8 as they take part in the annual Langley Street Dance.

This will either be the 43rd or second annual Langley Street Dance, depending upon how you look at it.

Kay said the street dance, which will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on the 2nd Street plaza in front of Callahan’s Firehouse, is a beloved summer tradition in the City by the Sea.

“I love giving back to the community I grew up in,” said Grimm.

“There’s very much a sense of community wrapped up in it,” she said. “It’s free, you get to hear local musicians and it’s a chance to dance in the street. You don’t get to do that very often.”

This year’s poster for the dance was done by local artist Moe Jerome. Kay is hoping to get more people involved in working on the poster for next year.

“This might be the one time a year when everybody is out in the street. You’re bound to see someone you know,” she said. “It’s a great time to have fun together and enjoy our great local musicians.”

“I’ve been dancing to their (Western Heroes) music for 40 years,” said Kay. “I remember dancing to the Licastro brothers’ music. So we’re bringing back our local history, too. I’m real excited.”

As mentioned, the event is free. Organizers expect the crowd to grow well beyond the plaza, so much of 2nd Street will be closed off. Kay said there is plenty of room for parking. There will not be concessions at the dance, but not to worry.

“Useless Bay Coffee Company will be open late with their beer garden, and there will be barbecue available for people at South Whidbey Commons,” Kay said. “There will be plenty of places to get food and refreshments and enjoy the music.”

The street dance is a joint effort between Langley Main Street, the Langley Arts Commission and the City of Langley.

“We’re all about working cooperatively,” said Kay. “You know high tide floats all boats. Everything just falls into place. The city and the arts commission select the bands and pick the poster artist. We just host it and do the promotion.

“This is one of those wonderful, non-controversial events,” she continued. “There’s nothing to fight about, just an opportunity to come together.”

South Whidbey looks to be named “Nicest Place in America”

By Kathy Reed Whidbey Weekly Time has nearly run out to vote on making South Whidbey the official “Nicest Place in America.”

South Whidbey is one of ten finalists in the Reader’s Digest magazine contest, and is the only western location in the competition.

Longtime South Whidbey resident Susan Knickerbocker nominated the area for the contest.

“We noticed South Whidbey is a special place because of its caring, giving people,” she said. “When I saw many months ago that Readers Digest, which has a huge circulation and is almost 100 years old, had a 'Nicest town in America contest,' I entered us all.”

The contest typically will only allow a single community to be nominated, so the whole of Whidbey couldn’t be included, but Knickerbocker was able to do at least the south end of the island.

“The contest was supposed to be just one town and one zip code,” she said. “But Reader’s Digest agreed to do the south half of Whidbey. I didn’t want to push it.”

South or north really makes no difference to the lure and appeal of Whidbey Island and those of us who call it home are proud to do so. There are two readily identifiable reasons it is one of the nicest places to live: Its sense of community and its people.

“It is safe, lovely and filled with exceedingly talented people,” said Sherrye Wyatt, executive director of Island County Tourism. “I think living on an island just naturally makes you a better person, perhaps the kind of person we all should be. You notice it in little things like how people return a misplaced phone, say hello on the street, return their grocery cart in the parking lot, or go out of their way to find the owner of a lost dog. That does not happen everywhere.”

“I believe what makes South Whidbey the nicest place is that most people here are not apathetic but are generous, care and help others,” Knickerbocker said.

There is also another obvious factor that makes Whidbey Island so special – its beauty.

“Whidbey Island is absolutely stunning. The natural beauty, mild climate, abundant wildlife and slow easy pace make it very special,” Wyatt said. “Every day I discover something new and endearing.

another cool product that someone is creating here,” she continued. “Beyond the obvious physical attributes, the island has something else, an intangible inner beauty because of the people who live here.”

Knickerbocker said personnel from the magazine have been impressed with what they’ve seen so far.

“Reader’s Digest is really happy with their own investigating of South Whidbey,” she said. “They think we are a unique community everyone can learn from.”

Should South Whidbey win, it will be featured in the November

issue of Reader’s Digest. Knickerbocker said she feels that would be good for the Island in general, for its chambers, tourism and for business.

“If South Whidbey wins, Reader’s Digest will send people out and do an article and front cover spread as well as an inside article,” Knickerbocker said. “Then everyone in South Whidbey can get involved and share their photos and stories. I would like this to be a community effort.”

As of this writing, it may be a bit of an uphill climb to capture the top spot. South Whidbey was in eighth place overall and the town of Gallatin, Tenn., was in the lead. Those interested in casting a vote can go to www.rd.com/nicest-places-contest/ once a day, but voting will close Friday, July 7, which doesn’t leave much time.

But whether South Whidbey wins or loses, the people who live here already know Whidbey Island is special, something visitors discover every day, with or without a “Nicest Place in America” title.

“People are naturally drawn to the unspoiled beauty and mystery of a Pacific Northwest island,” said Wyatt. “It is fun to see the enthusiasm visitors have for simple things we may take for granted. They get excited to see bald eagles, deer, low tide, or to go glass blowing. It is a real treat to meet artists, farmers or winemakers or to catch and eat fresh crab. I understand why they love to return again and again.”

Those interested in helping South Whidbey win can vote once daily and can encourage everyone they know to vote as well.

Grimm said he has never tired of planning this event.

“I love cars and people. I love the challenge and working with my brother and my team of friends,” he said. “Making this event is great for me. How many times in your 60s can you play cars with your brother?”

One of the things many of those attending enjoy, according to Grimm, is the opportunity to talk with the vehicles’ owners.

And not only is there a coloring contest for kids, there’s one for grandmothers, too.

“We will have a ‘69 Camaro there from the Everett Rotary Club that they will be selling raffle tickets to,” Grimm said. “It will have a coloring book with pictures of the Camaro in it. The grandmothers color the car and the one who wins will get a car show shirt or hat.”

“I love everything about it,” Grimm said, giving this year’s event a ringing endorsement. “We will have the best car show we have ever put on on South Whidbey.”

and you sort of cut out the middle man – the carhop. Now don’t get me wrong, there are still some great drive-in restaurants out there (with the added option of a drive-thru window) and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a fantastic one in Mount Vernon close to the freeway. I have nothing but good things to say about the food I ate there! I am lucky I get to experience my notion of America, pluck it straight from my mind, put it on my plate and savor each bite.

I would love to find all the little diners and driveins there are and try each one out, but alas, I don’t always have the time to make lengthy road trips! So what might be a good idea instead, is to bring the drive-in home, recreate it and, who knows, maybe even have a drive-in movie night in the back yard or driveway!

DRIVE-IN DINERS, THEIR DENIZENS AND THE DELICIOUS FOOD! So I was thinking, with the Fourth of July celebrated and all the pomp, reverie and patriotism lived thoroughly to mark the special occasion, what things conjure up images of ‘America’?

Truly, what is ‘American’? Moreover, what is American Food?

I can speak from two different perspectives about this matter and when I first used to think of the United States, screen reels would flash through my mind of baseball games, vendors loudly coaxing spectators to spend their money on hotdogs, steaming hot and dripping with ketchup and mustard. I imagined diners, just like the ones you see on T.V. and I found out those are, in fact, some of the best places to eat.

But what ‘America’ means in a person’s mind is like everything else, subjective, and like everything else food related, open to interpretation.

In all honesty, it's hard to think that other people might have a different idea of what American fare is, in comparison to my own thoughts, purely because more screen reels play through my mind and I’m watching Grease with the Pink Ladies strutting their stuff and showing their style. I’m watching kids jiving and swing dancing all over diners and cars. This brings me to another thought that crosses the mind from time to time.

What about Drive-ins? The idea is still kind of a novelty to a certain degree perhaps, but imagine when it was first introduced! Eating your meal (which was often brought to you by someone on roller skates) in your car. Where did this all begin?

Research suggests an enterprising man by the name of Walter Scott made some adaptations to a horse drawn cart in 1872 so it would better facilitate the transportation and serving of food to shift workers and people out and about in the high hours of the night or wee hours of the morning. It’s said the people Scott served were a rather ferocious crowd and he would appropriate their hats as collateral, should they skip town, stomach full and conveniently not exchanging

money with Scott for his fare. In fact, he was also known to use a club to demand payment of the food he sold to the late night street occupants.

Thankfully, this is no longer an acceptable style for business transactions and we can enjoy food truck fare without the threat of being clubbed over the head or turning in items of clothing to be held, just in case we make a run for it. Better yet – don’t make a run for it. Just pay first and then enjoy your food!

By the early 1900s, street food or lunch carts/ wagons were a staple and their popularity was on the rise. Many of these lunch wagons became permanent street fixtures and due to their similarity to a train’s dining car, they were aptly called ‘diners.’ While lunch cars or diners were springing up everywhere, so were cars thanks to Henry Ford wanting each and every American family to become proud owners of an automobile. Couple this with the need for roads, highways and all the infrastructure to go along with it, and you have yourself a wonderful opportunity if you were in the food business. Hungry road workers constantly on the move needed to eat, and this allowed small food shacks to appear in order to feed these masses. To make it more convenient for these famished workers to eat on the go, drive-up curbside service was offered and ‘Drive-ins’ became a big thing.

What foods were found at Drive-ins? This is where information becomes so diverse and a little bit sparse. I think perhaps it was dependent on the area in which your taste buds found themselves. When I was young, we used to eat drive-in food from a small sea front shop in my mother’s home town. They served burgers, sandwiches, hotdogs and French fries. It was so delicious and outside of the norm to eat in the car and potentially mess everywhere. It added to the entire experience, the excitement of it all, and the food was different to what we ate traditionally. What a novelty!

With the exponential increase in fast food restaurants, diners and drive-ins have sadly taken a back seat because at a fast food drive-thru the concept is very much the same but you cut down on the time it takes to get your food

I’d serve whatever feels right, whatever my thoughts take me to that slip my mind back in gastronomic time and then I’ll get creative. Dear Readers, maybe you too might like to recreate a drive-in menu in your own home? Chili Dogs Done a little Different 8 oz. block of cream cheese 1 can good quality chili mix or you could use fresh homemade chili ½ onion chopped 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 6-8 beef hot dog links, fully cooked In a medium saucepan over medium heat, mix the cream cheese and canned or homemade chili. Stir constantly until the cream cheese has melted completely and been incorporated very well into the chili. Allow the mixture to cook for another 4 or 5 minutes until it is hot, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and prepare your hotdogs as per your personal predilection or as per package instructions. Place the hot dog on a bun, top with chopped onion, and spoon over about a quarter cup of chili. Add some of the shredded cheddar, serve and enjoy! Life Tributes William Frank Morgan William Frank Morgan was born March 28, 1930 in Cora, KS to Carl and Estie Morgan. He passed away at Skagit Valley Hospital June 22, 2017.

Bill grew up working on his family’s farm in Kansas. He joined the Navy in his teens, where he spent 30 years of his life serving his country before he retired from the service. After he retired, he earned two Associate degrees from Skagit Valley Community College; one in Marine Technology and the other in Auto Mechanics.

He also earned his real estate license and eventually retired from selling homes. In his spare time Bill loved to go camping and hiking in the mountains. A true lover of water, he also liked to go swimming and fishing. He also loved to cook all kinds of foods for his much-loved family and friends. All in all, the farm boy from Kansas grew up to lead a wonderful, interesting and enriching life, and was a wonderful, loving husband.

Bill is survived by his wife, Michiko Morgan, his brother Morg (89), sister Tony (91), and sister Inez (82), all located in Idaho.
