Hydros for Heroes is meant to serve two purposes. First and foremost, this event is to honor and recognize the men and women who work tirelessly every single day for our country, state, and local community. Secondly, this event is to raise money for charity. The event is sponsored by The Craig McKenzie Team Foundation. The Rotary Club of Oak Harbor will receive 100% of the net proceeds from Hydros for Heroes for their charitable causes. Among those causes is the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. As a fellow Rotarian, my Team and I take great pride in our ability to help fund the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program in their mission to feed hungry children and fund our Future Leaders’ college scholarships and other various programs our great club supports. Welcome to Race Day If it’s your first time attending a race as a spectator, there’s a lot to learn and even more to be excited about. Here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know when attending your first APBA Race
What to Bring to a Race Probably the most important item, umbrellas will help shade you from the blazing sun and if it happens to rain you’ll be covered. Races will continue to run during light rain showers, as long as the conditions aren’t deemed too severe. Remember, comfort is key. Even on an overcast day you can’t hide from the sun; and being on a waterfront means the sun will be even stronger reflecting off of the surface of the water. Sunglasses are also a good thing to have to help reflect the sun. Remember sunscreen unless you want to leave the race extra crispy. Ice cold refreshments are always good – especially on race day. Some races do not allow coolers; while others will allow you to bring drinks in with you…it’s best to check beforehand with the race site. We also encourage you to support the local food & beverage vendors at races that have them. Comfortable folding chairs with four separate legs are best – these will prevent rocking on uneven ground. If you’re looking to take some good action shots of boats during the race, you’re going to need a good camera. Sorry folks, iPhones aren’t the best at capturing boats flying past at top speed. A high speed camera with at least 1/1000 second shutter speed is recommended.
The Race Course Just like other motorsports, the inside lane is the best position in powerboat racing. It provides the shortest distance around the course and gives an advantage to any racer. The overall length of the race is five miles, but depending on the size of the course, the number of laps may vary from 3-5 total laps for a complete race. All buoys must be passed on the drivers left side – If a driver passes to the right, they must go back and pass the buoy on the correct side. Drivers can touch a buoy and continue racing as long as no damage is done. However, if a buoy is dislodged, deflated, or otherwise damaged, the boat will be disqualified.
Drivers who jump the gun on a start won’t know until the end of the race, at which point they will not receive a checkered flag at the five mile mark and are required to take an extra lap.
Race Formats & Watching the Race THE FLYING START 5 Min. Gun The Flying Start is unlike any start in any other motor sport. This format has boats cross the starting line at full speed, which means timing the start is absolutely essential. The starting line is marked with two 1 Min. Gun checkered buoys on either end, and drivers must time their approach to cross this line at the exact Start time the start clock has counted down to zero. The lane or poll position established at this point must be maintained down the front straightaway to the exit of turn one during the start. Because of this, the Finish first turn is where most action is likely to occur – be sure you have a good view.
Signals & Start Times In a flying start format there will be a five minute gun to signal that it is time for boats to leave the pits. During this five minute period, drivers will make a timing run or two, while giving their engine the time to get up to temperature for the race. Just prior to the one minute gun, drivers will be jockeying for poll positions. When the one minute gun goes off, drivers have to maintain their respective lanes and should be just around the exit of turn one in the final lap prior to the start – any further and they will likely have to slow down to keep from jumping the gun and crossing the starting line too early. The goal is to reach the starting line exactly when the clock counts down to zero and to be at full speed. Once the race has started, the clock will switch from counting down to counting up.

Get Ready to Fly When you hear the roar of automotive engines and catch a glimpse of giant roostertails, chances are pretty good that inboards are on the water. As the largest category in the APBA, Inboard racing classes include both runabouts and hydroplanes that are fast, fun and LOUD. Classes span from wild Jersey Speed Skiffs (70 MPH) to supercharged 1,500 horsepower Grand Prix Hydroplanes (170 MPH). The minimum age for racing in this exciting category ranges from 14 to 21. Inboard racing requires an unmatched level of teamwork and professionalism, as well as a family atmosphere with life long bonds between owners, drivers and crew members; and that is exactly what powerboat racing is all about.
Classes Inboard racing classes consist of both Runabout and Hydroplane classes. You can tell a boat’s class by the letter(s) next to the boat number. All inboard drivers are required to wear a racing helmet and lifejacket as well as other protective gear such as fire-resistant Nomex and cut resistant Kevlar. Drivers who race inboards with an enclosed cockpit (capsule) are required to pass APBA capsule training and certification every two years. Nobody plans to flip, but it does happen from time to time…and when it does happen, the training pays off. Inboard Runabouts, or flatbottoms, come in both the open cockpit and capsule variety. Flatbottoms are known for their long lean shape, which allows the boat to slice through water as they move at speeds of 100+ MPH. Got a friend? Some runabouts run with two racers on board – a driver and a mechanic. Hydroplanes glide over the water on a cushion of air, with only the propeller and sponsons on each side touching the water while air rushes under the hull, giving the boat the “lift” it needs to skim across the water. These bad boys are fast, with some classes running at speeds in excess of 150 MPH - Inboard hydroplane classes range from 1 liters (T-Boats) to the 1500hp supercharged Big Block Chevrolet V8 Grand Prix (GP). All inboard hydros utilize a capsule safety cell as well as racing lap and shoulder belts. Controls are similar to those of an automobile – steering wheel, accelerator pedal, rear view mirrors – but no brakes! WATCH OUT for roostertails! If an inboard hydro is in front of you, chances are you’re about to get blasted with a wall of water from the giant roostertail of the boat in front of you. Racing into a turn favors the leader, with those behind having to deal with roostertail fallout!
1 LITRE 1 Litre (“Y” class) hydroplanes are small, light and lightning quick, racing to speeds over 105 MPH. While supercharging is not allowed, other modifications are encouraged. Engines are automotive or marine based, 2 or 4-cycle style. Maximum limit of 2-cycle is 1160 cc and maximum limit of 4-cycle is 1315 cc. The most common engines are from 2-cycle personal water crafts boats!
1.5 LITRE STOCK 1.5 Litre Stock (“T” class) hydroplanes race at 90+ MPH. These small, light and racy hydros are a great starting point for young drivers or for budget teams. They generate all the competitive excitement of the bigger classes, but their smaller size, virtually stock components, and dependable 4 cylinder Toyota engine add a degree of economy to following the boat racing trail.
2.5 LITRE MODIFIED The 2.5 Litre Modified (“A” class) hydroplane races at speeds over 130 MPH - creatively. Few engine restrictions apply beyond prohibiting superchargers and setting a displacement limit of 166 cubic inches; engine modifications are limited only by the racer’s imagination.
2.5 LITRE STOCK 2.5 Litre Stock hydroplanes (“S” class) race to 100+ MPH, using 145 horsepower marine-based 2000 and 2300 Ford engines. S-boats offer very exciting side-by-side racing at a reasonable cost. Driving skill is paramount here, and driver development is inevitable, making this class an excellent stepping stone to bigger, higher-powered classes.
5 LITRE 5 Litre hydroplanes (“E” boats) race to speeds of 115 MPH, powered by mildly modified marine-based stock 305 Chevrolet and 302 Ford V-8 engines (285 horsepower). Engine modifications are limited, putting a premium on driver skill, with great competition at every event. These guys and gals duke it out every time!
CRACKERBOX Crackerbox (“P”) is one of the oldest Inboard Runabout classes, distingushed by the 2-person team of driver and rider seated side by side at the rear of the hull. A powerful modified engine, mounted amidships, powers these sprinting flatbottom hulls in impressively competitive races.
GRAND PRIX HYDROPLANES Grand Prix Hydroplane – supercharged competition! This professional level GP class provides all the noise and excitement you can handle. The 1500 horsepower blown V-8s, based on big block Chevrolet design, make the most noise and throw the biggest roostertails this side of anywhere! Limitations are few; beyond the 468-cubic inch engine displacement, it’s Hot Rod City and up to the ingenuity of the builder. Grand Prix hydros are the biggest and baddest of the bad!

August 19-20, 2017 K RACING RUNABOUT K Racing Runabouts (K-Boats) are a professional class of propellerdriven Inboard Racing Runabouts, using virtually unlimited engines and fuel. Basically, anything goes. Drivers must be 21 years old and qualified, as these boats are extremely fast (competition speeds over 100 MPH, and a Kilo record of 147.265 MPH).
NATIONAL MODIFIED HYDROPLANE The National Modified hydroplane (NM) offers speeds of 140 MPH to the serious competitor, utilizing automotive and marine non-supercharged engines ranging from 4-cylinder and V-6 up to 368 cubic inch V-8 engines, carbureted and fuel injected.
PRO STOCK Pro Stock Runabouts (PS) are a professional class of propeller-driven Inboard Racing Runabouts. The high speeds (120+ MPH) make Pro Stock an exciting class to drive or to watch. These flatbottom boats use non-supercharged, 500 cubic inch engines, mounted rear of
Hydros For Heroes amidships and driving forward through a V-drive; carburetion or fuel injection may be used. The same hull may be run in Super Stock, so you may see boats with SS/PS next to the number.
SPORTSMAN ENTRY (SE) Sportsman Entry is a fun, affordable entry level runabout class with a maximum speed of 85 MPH using only GM cast iron small block and cast iron heads derived from passenger or truck model vehicles, and abiding by inboard Runabout and safety rules.
SUPER STOCK Super Stock (SS) is a powerful, fast (100+ MPH) Inboard runabout class. These exciting flatbottom hulled boats are powered by highwinding, 427 cubic inch big block Chevrolet engines, based on the venerable L88 design, which must be mounted rear of amidships and drive forward through a V-drive. Drivers often run both Super Stock and Pro Stock, so you may see boats with SS/PS next to the number.

About: Chris Grant started attending hydroplane races when he was a young boy running around in the pits as his father David worked as a Seafair Security guard and as a mechanic with one of the hydroplane teams. After their grandparents’ death in 2000, Chris and David, along with Jean and Randy, used the inheritance to buy their first hydroplane. In their first year of racing, the Grants finished in 8th place in the nation, out of 48 teams that year in The National Modified Class of the APBA. Since then the family has raced as an Unlimited Lights Team and have moved up to the Grand Prix Class in 2012. GP3 finished in fifth place in the nation in the 2014 Grand Prix Class, with Chris Grant driving. The team is based in Grays Harbor, WA.

He started racing 1200cc inboards at age 14 and won his first race and placed second in the nation. This was the beginning of a long racing career. In 1995, Greg began driving Unlimited Lights and worked his way up through the ranks to the unlimited class 1998. He was the first rookie unlimited driver in history to earn over 10,000 points in one season, earning him rookie of the year honors in 1999. In 2000, Greg replaced the retiring Chip Hanauer in Fred Leland’s U-100 while also sharing driving duties with his dad Jerry in the UL-15. This was the start of a dominating presence in the UL/GP classes, garnering numerous heat and race wins, world records and national championships. Greg began driving exclusively for Renton, WA based Bob Schellhase in 2011.

HOPP RACING Driver: Jerry Hopp Owners: Jerry Hopp and Gregg Hopp Home Town: Snohomish, WA Class: Grand Prix Crew Chief: PJ Millenbach/Brett Holloway Crew: Lori Santillo, Dave Penz, Bob and Lisa Donelly, Daryl Marincovich, Luke and Matt Zastrow About: Jerry Hopp started racing A Stock Hydros in 1969 after returning from a tour in Vietnam with the US Army, and began in 145 Inboard Hydro in 1975. He was the 1983 High Point champ and 1980-83 Region 10 145 hydro champ. Set 1 1/4 mile course record. Started racing Unlimited Hydroplanes in 1981 thru 2007 and received an Outstanding Achievement Award in 1984 for starting and finishing every heat started that year. Al Thoreson and Jerry owned and ran the U-7 Turbo-Allison powered Unlimited from 1986-92, which ran as Jackpot Foodmart for 4 years, with their best finish happening in 1988, placing 2nd in San Diego. In his Unlimited racing career, Jerry also drove many other boats and gained a reputation as a strong and steady competitor. Jerry became one of the first owners of an Unlimited Light Hydroplane in 1995 and later acquired one of the top boats in the class, Ned Allen’s former Alamo. Converting to a supercharged engine in 2003, Hopp won his first race at Seafair in Seattle that year. The UL-15 became the GP-15 and moved up to the Grand Prix Class in 2007. Hopp set Straightaway records in the UL class and currently holds the UIM APBA Grand Prix record at 169.081 mph. Jerry drives school bus for Snohomish School district and the kids call him the “World’s Fastest Grandpa”. Jerry and his wife Dorothy live in Snohomish, WA.

ECKENBERG RACING Driver: David Warren Owner: Tom Eckenberg – Five Star Racin Home Town: Lake Stevens, WA Class: Grand Prix Crew Chief: Allan Revel About: David Warren is in his 12th year as a driver, but began his contact with boat racing on the Region 10 rescue team. He was on the rescue team for the Tri-Cities and Seattle Unlimited races for 11 years. Following a day of work on the rescue team at Tastin’ & Racin’, he was walking around the pits and noticed there was a UL team working on the bottom of the boat and asked if they needed help. The next day, on the rescue boat, Dave remembered the huge sense of accomplishment he had when the boat went out to race and came back to the dock. After that race, he became more involved with the team for the rest of that year and then, the following year, he stopped doing rescue and became a full team member on the UL-929. The following year, David became “crew chief” of the team. Eventually, he got the opportunity to take the boat out for a “test drive” at Black Lake and Port Angeles and instantly fell in love with driving. After that season, Warren purchased the silver and green GP-329 and became and owner/driver and a regular in Grand Prix West. He drove Gordy Gilmer’s GP-60 for two seasons and has spent the past five seasons in the cockpit of Tom Eckenberg’s GP-19. David Warren lives in Lake Stevens, WA.

BLOWN INCOME RACING Driver: Ed Preston Owner: Blown Income Racing LLC Home Town: Olympia, WA Class: Grand Prix About: Ed Preston has always had an interest in going fast, especially in boats. It probably comes from growing up camping with his family and watching his father, Don Preston, drive the Little Huck (136), Hot Stuff (280) which later became the Miss Heidelberg (280); and the U-Bet (blown 7 liter). Ed bought his first 100 mph flat bottom boat at the age of 16 running it up and down the Puget Sound for fun! He then built a pickle fork jet boat, again for fun! At the end of his teen years he turned to racing his own rally car as an amateur for 3 years and then on the professional circuit for another 3 years pitting his “homemade” car against factory teams several times cracking the top 10! After the rally cars he turned back to the water selling yachts for his family and being hired out as a skipper transporting million dollar yachts up and down the coast from southern California to Alaska. He then transitioned into repairing boats and years later spent four plus years working with Ron Jones, JR where he helped build GP-20 among other watercraft. He is now back doing work in the composite field where he owns and operates Black Lake Fiberglass, a high-end fiberglass/composite fabrication shop in Olympia, Washington. Starting in 2015 he began his Rookie year and realized his childhood dream of driving a hydroplane, even more amazing, one that he helped build. The GP-20 first hit the water in June 2015. The new design required some R&D and the team made rapid progress with the boat showing a lot of promise. By the end of July and the running of the Columbia Cup in the Tri-Cities, Hall and the boat were qualifying and racing with the GPW front runners. A blow over accident on the long, windy backstretch brought development to a stop and badly damaged the boat, requiring extensive rebuilding to the left side. The boat returned to action in San Diego in September. Hall founded the Marine Dream Racing Team in 2005 and - prior to building the new boat in 2015 - was the 2.5 Liter Modified National High Points Champion, Babcock Award Winner and Western Divisional Champion in 2007 and 2008. Rob and his wife Mary live in Sandpoint, ID and have a daughter, Nicholia Clark, and a grandson,Colton Clark.

Randy Christianson Racers For Christ Randy has been a race fan and gearhead since he was a young boy. His father was a cabinet maker and had the perfect tools for building hydroplanes. In high school he became a member of the crew for a Drag Racing Team and raced motorcycles, but hydroplanes were always his favorite. Randy has been married for 35 years, has 3 adult children and one grandson nicknamed “Hotrod”. In 2009 he reached a point in his life where he asked God what his purpose was here on earth. He connected with the organization Racers For Christ that provides Chaplains for all types of motorsport events. Once Randy became a full Chaplain in 2010 he found his permanent home in Region 10 as their Chaplain. Classes Most OPC classes use the water-skimming tunnel boat design, with an air space under the boat between the sponsons. These range from open-cockpit Sport C boats to fast, powerful Formula 1 rockets. However, there’s room for v-bottom and flatbottom boats as well in some classes. You can start with a class that uses off-the-shelf production engines and pleasure boats and move up to highly modified racing engines and built-for-speed composite hulls. Many racers move from Stock, Modified or PRO racing to the Sport C or SST 45 class. Once they find they like tunnel boats, they can keep moving up in speed, size and budget. Sportsman classes like Tri-Hulls (in the Texas-Louisiana area), Mini GT and GT Pro get the whole family out on the water, racing together. (Kids as young as 12 can start in Mini GT).
FORMULA 150 Gaining popularity across the country, the Formula 150 class was originally developed to keep older equipment viable on the race course. A variety of engines can be raced in the Formula 150 class, ranging from 100 to 158 cubic inches. If you own an older Suzuki, Yamaha, OMC, or Mercury, this class may be able to get you out on the race course. In recent years, Mercury has added the 200XS OptiMax to the market, which is also legal in this class. If you like to tinker with your engine, Formula 150 allows you to modify smaller engines. Larger model engines are run “stock” (as manufactured), allowing racers with a variety of engines to remain competitive.
SPORT C Sport C is an entry-level tunnel boat class that is very popular on the West Coast and in the Midwest. These affordable 12-foot boats average 50-55 MPH and are powered by 35 cubic inch engines mounted on true tunnel race hulls. A variety of legal hulls (vee, flatbottom, modified vee, or tunnel design), the boat must be at least 48.0 inches wide. Sport C is a great class to hone driving skills, due to the high level of competition. Sport C marathon races are popular in some regions too, testing a driver’s endurance as well as skill.
