SARAH GERRITSEN & THE SHADOW CATCHERS The music of Sarah Gerritsen and the Shadow Catchers is written with a stirring narrative quality that speaks of a life well lived, tinged with the depths of mournful grief and colored by the zeal of joyfulness. With vibrant profundity, lush three-part vocal harmonies and powerful soulfulness, they infuse compelling storytelling and take folk/Americana to uncharted territory.

RUST ON THE RAILS Cody Beebe and Blake Noble are no secret to the Pacific Northwest music scene. Beebe, front man of Cody Beebe & the Crooks, has toured extensively–nationally and internationally–with his Northwest rock-influenced, Americana sound. Australian-born Noble is an accomplished touring musician with his distinctive percussive guitar and skilled didgeridoo blended with American folk, blues and funk. What began as a simple collaboration, based on the mutual respect between Beebe and Noble for each other’s unique talents, gave way to Rust on the Rails. Rounding things out, Beebe and Noble are joined by a rock-solid rhythm section with Eric Miller on bass and Chris Lucier on drums. Something new made familiar, something complicated made simple–their sound blends world music and 90s rock behind complexions of blues, folk and funk. The result is uniquely intuitive “American Aussie roots.”

Friday, Sept. 2, 7:45pm • Island Trollers Stage

JANIE CRIBBS AND THE T.RUST BAND From Whidbey Island, Janie Cribbs and the T.Rust Band is a tight outfit with stunning seductive vocals, sizzling slide guitar and a foottappin’ rhythm section. They’ll be playing a mix of originals and some unique blues standards. Feel the groove of “smokin’ hot blues, roots, folk ‘n soul,” all broadcasted on the frequency of love!

L.A. EDWARDS L.A. Edwards is fronted by a young Californian songwriter. L.A. (aka Luke Andrew) was raised on Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles and Cat Stevens. After dropping out of high school at 15, Edwards spent several years on the road with his brother as a folk duo singing love songs and gaining an education from some of America’s best songwriters. The result is encore-ready folk rock with just the right hint of alt-country that is rich in high-baritone-and-tenor harmonies and spare in all other ways, like a perfect next-generation combination of Ryan Adams, Simon & Garfunkel and Tom Petty.

Saturday, Sept. 3, 2:30pm • Island Thrift Stage

BROKEN BANJO Broken Banjo could be described as a folk/ Americana vocal group, but this doesn’t begin to describe the range of what this exciting trio delivers. In the span of a few songs, they can move from a soulful ballad to a jazz standard to classic blues. With Larry Mason on rhythm guitar, Kevin Johnson on lead guitar and Deirdre Fairfax on lead vocals, guitar, harp and penny whistle, these three creatively collaborate from their own perspectives and strengths to put a Broken Banjo stamp on each song. Their name was adopted from Deirdre’s father’s music and coffee house in a small town in Millington, Tennessee, in the mid sixties. It seemed like a perfect namesake for the band that loves to share songs spanning across genres and time.

DODGY MOUNTAIN MEN

Dodgy Mountain Men sling a homebrewed Montana stompgrass that goes down smooth but packs a bite, mixing the rhythms of bluegrass, the soul of the blues and the energy of rock ‘n’ roll with a plethora of other musical traditions to create a unique electro-acoustic experience. The group’s genre-bending experimentation and passion for American-roots traditions weave together to emphasize their lyrical storytelling, creating a musical frontier rife with empty mason jars, outlaws, gypsy women and cold Montana storms. Add three distinct voices, a pension for sonic exploration and live performances that build to a fever pitch, and you’ve got a concoction that will make moonshiners proud and compel dancers to wear out the soles of their shoes.

This year’s performance at the Oak Harbor Music Festival marks fifteen years since their landmark debut record, Row, and a reunion of all five original members: Cynthia Frazzini, Craig Aspen, Dan Tyack, Garey Shelton and Stevie Adamek.

TOO SLIM & THE TAILDRAGGERS If Tim “Too Slim” Langford only played slide guitar, he would slither around most other blues guitarists and put a ferocious bite on their pride. However, as the sole six-string slinger, songwriter and lead singer of the power trio Too Slim and the Taildraggers, he is a total force of nature, leaving musical tracks for others to try and follow. Now with 17 albums and countless gigs, he remains as untamed and menacing as ever.

PENGUIN PRISON

On Lost In New York, the new full-length album from producer/singersongwriter/DJ Penguin Prison (aka Christopher Glover), the hustle and bustle of the city comes alive. From the vintage glam of NYC’s storied disco heyday, all the way through to the bohemian rhapsody of modern Brooklyn, Lost In New York is a cultural time capsule dedicated to the greatest city on the planet, as told via Glover’s intimate storytelling and personal brand of electro pop. Since the beginning of Penguin Prison, Christopher Glover has forged a creative lane all to himself, without genre boundaries holding him back. Penguin Prison plays a unique brew of cerebral club music built on rock fervor and punk independence. It demonstrates the intelligence often hidden in electronic pop, without taking itself too seriously. His stylistic approach to modern pop has garnered Glover accolades from both mainstream and tastemaker media alike, with Rolling Stone praising his “sleek modern production style,” to Spin dubbing him a “dance-pop savant.”

TEEN TALENT WINNERS OCTAVIA PROSSER Octavia loves playing both guitar and drums. She is a member of the orchestral and jazz bands at North Whidbey Middle School and hopes to continue these activities at Oak Harbor High. She is very thankful for both her guitar teacher, Dave Willis, and drum teacher, Scott Small.

BACKYARD BISON Backyard Bison was formed by high school friends Ryan Evans (bass guitar/cajon), Jourdan Wallace (lead guitar), Tyler Grehan (acoustic lead/vocals), Kenyon Sirak (rhythm guitar/ vocals) and Elijah Marth (keys/ vocals). Sam Gibbon was added a week later as a drummer to complete the band’s sound. The group began playing in the upstairs of Gibbon’s house in the summer of 2016. Their main influences include alternative rock groups such as Young the Giant and Two Door Cinema Club, as well as the undefinable Twenty-One Pilots. They will be making the transition from covers to originals soon.

ADAM NELSON & TARYN EVANS Adam Nelson and Taryn Evans are a duo that began singing together while serving on the worship team at Living Word Fellowship. Last year, Adam and Taryn were both part of the Harbor Singers at Oak Harbor High School and were given opportunities to perform together at concerts. Adam is 17 and will be a senior this fall. Taryn graduated in June and will be attending Skagit Valley College. Adam and Taryn are influenced most by the music groups The Civil Wars and Boyce Avenue.

ASHLEY SERNA

SECOND LEFT Since 2015, Second Left has been building their audience and sharing their music with as many people as possible. Consisting of four--Q White on drums, Cayden Cosper on lead guitar, Ethan Cosper on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, and leader Jordan George on bass guitar, these guys will be sure to provide a good serving of energy and rock.

Ashley Serna has always loved music ever since she started taking violin lessons in the second grade. At 17 years old, she has over 10 years of music experience, which were gained mostly through years of band. Growing up listening to whatever music her parents listened to, her tastes and influences range from classic and heavy rock to alternative and pop. She is most influenced by bands and performers like Queen, Christina Perri, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lindsey Stirling. She continues to broaden her horizons and hopes one day to write her own music.

COLE VALDEZ & CHRISTOPHER ROBERTSON Cole has been playing piano for seven years, and Chris has been playing guitar for four years. When Chris and Cole were in fourth grade, they both were leads in a play. One day, in line to go to practice for the play, they heard each other singing the same song, ”Demons,” by Imagine Dragons, so they decided to perform it together in the upcoming school talent show. Three years later, they performed together in the Whidbey Has Talent show and won first place, and it has just grown from there.

OUR VISION

Inspire our community with the power of music.

OUR MISSION

To raise funds to support the needs in our local community, including but not limited to music scholarships for local students.

Along with this musical extravaganza, the Festival has provided: • A community event that encourages tourism and economic growth. • Scholarships for students studying music post high school. The proceeds from the festival will fund scholarships to students representing all three high schools on Whidbey Island: Oak Harbor High School, Coupeville High School and South Whidbey High School. • Good food, friendly people and over 30 acts scheduled throughout the weekend, on two stages, showcasing a variety of musical entertainment in a festival setting, welcoming all ages, every demographic and everyone who loves music.

The rhythm section consists of piano, bass and drums. The fourteen members of the band and over thirty eager subs hail from South Whidbey Island to Bellingham. Dedicated to the swing era music of the 30s, 40s and 50s, the SeaNotes have enjoyed the resurgence of big band music. ORIGINAL JIM

Born in Seattle and raised in the shadows of Mt. Pilchuck, Jim learned he could sing in high school, and he liked it. Jim has been developing his original sound by writing and arranging in a style of music he refers to as beatbox-driven soul rock, or “beatbox soul,” a label he attached to his debut solo recording.

NATHANIEL TALBOT

With influences ranging from prodigious guitar pickers such as Doc Watson, Leo Kotke and Kelly Joe Phelps, to the more soulful folk poetry of Elliott Smith, Gillian Welch and Paul Simon, Nathaniel Talbot’s music represents a unique synthesis of old-time picking and the indie here-and-now. Nathaniel combines masterful finger-style guitar work with thoughtful, melodic vocal lines to create a sonic experience that is truly fresh and impactful.

Singer/songwriter Jess Clemons has traveled some miles in her musical life. A Vermont native, long-time Nantucketer and traveler at heart, she has toured small venues and folk festivals across the U.S., Canada and Baja California, Mexico. Accompanying herself on piano and guitar, her gutsy, luscious vocals are often compared to those of Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones and Patty Griffin. Her songs tell stories of life, love and experiences while traveling. Since moving west to Hood River, Oregon, in 2013, she has created a name for herself in a talented pool of northwest musicians, playing numerous small festivals, house concerts and music series gigs.

THREE FOR SILVER

JELLY BREAD

Three For Silver runs off the friction of opposing forces: thunderous bass and dreamy melody, baritone growl and smooth soprano, new music and timeworn style. The trio has hit the road non-stop since their formation in 2013–playing over 200 shows a year–and has gained an international following by redefining the boundaries of acoustic music.

Jelly Bread’s distinct style is identified by a blend of desert twang meeting urban tones of funk and rock. Exceptional songwriting and storytelling–interlaced with four-part harmonies, intricate drum and bass grooves, swampy-lap steel guitar, dirt-under-the-fingernails guitar licks, tasty talkbox and take-’em-to-church organ– create a downright appetizing sound.

AYRON JONES & THE WAY Seattle guitarist and frontman Ayron (Eh-Rahn) Jones has become one of Seattle’s hottest up-and-comers with his brand of Seattle rock. Jones has taken a hybrid style of guitar playing, in which the chord and solo are played at the same time, and infused the raw energy of punk with the inner-city attitude of hip hop. The result is a soulful reincarnation of that iconic Seattle sound. Think: Stevie Ray Vaughan meets Nirvana.
