THE SMALL GLORIES

Roots powerhouse duo The Small Glories are Cara Luft and JD Edwards, a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies. Thrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate. Striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear and audiences feel as though they are right there on stage with the band. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing, dancing, crying, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along. “We’re folk singers; we try to write stuff people can relate to,” says the multi-instrumentalist Edwards. The Small Glories concerts are welcoming in terms of subject–songs of love, loss, thesmallglories.com and environment, delivered with soaring, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo, guitar, and harmonica. However, their performance is really about what happens in between the songs. “The feedback we get from a lot of audiences is it’s not just about the music for them,” Luft says. “It’s the whole package.”

GYPSY TEMPLE

www.orcanetwork.org

Gypsy Temple has a singular mission: grab alt-rock by the collar and drag it into the waiting arms of a new generation. The Seattle group’s debut album, King Youngblood, is a bold declawww.gypsytemple.com ration that unironic, melodic rock’ n’ roll continues to stand tall as a vibrant medium of self-expression. All classically trained musicians that came up through public school music programs, Lavi-Jones and bandmates Cory Cavazos (electric cello), Kai Hill (drums), Hamoon “Moon” Milaninia (bass), and Martin Creed (guitar) teamed up with Maurice Jones, Jr. (Neville Brothers, Peter Gabriel) and multiplatinum producer Phillip Peterson (A$AP Rocky, Portugal the Man, Pink) to craft an undeniable, arresting debut LP.

THE LONESOME TOWN PAINTERS

www.lonesometownpainters.com

The Lonesome Town Painters are a tried-and-true, bona fide bluegrass band hailing from the Pacific Northwest. These fellas have a look, style, and sound that harkens back to the raw and ragged edge of the genre. And while they draw deeply from the masters of the golden era, it’s their original songs that demonstrate just how far these fellas have come. Their songwriting is grounded in tradition, anchored by soaring harmonies, melodic instrumentation, and pushing drive that have come to define their spirited and highly entertaining performances.

BROKEN BANJO

Broken Banjo could be described as a folk/Americana vocal group, but it would not begin to describe the range of what this exciting trio delivers. In the span of a few songs, they can move from a soulful ballad to a jazz standard to classic blues. With Larry Mason on rhythm guitar, Kevin Johnson on lead guitar, and Deirdre Fairfax on lead vocals, guitar, harp, and penny whistle, these three creatively collaborate from their own perspectives and strengths to put a Broken Banjo stamp on each song. Their name was adopted from Deirdre’s father’s music and coffee house in a small town in Millington, TN, in the mid-60s. It seemed like a perfect namesake for the band that loves to share songs spanning across genres and time.

NATHANIEL TALBOT TRIO

Raised in the wooded foothills southeast of Portland, OR, the big firs and wide farmscapes of childhood made a lifelong impression on Talbot’s songwriting. He began learning piano at age seven, started a punk rock band at 13, and quickly thereafter began steeping himself in guitar-driven sounds of Kelly Joe Phelps, Elliott Smith, Bill Frisell, and other Pacific Northwest heroes. Over the next 15 years, Talbot honed an approach to songwriting and storytelling, driven by his complex, yet delicate, fingerstyle guitar work, earning him a distinct place in the northwest folk scene. His latest incarnation goes full-electric, featuring island locals Keegan Harshman on bass and Andrew Dorsett on drums, fusing Talbot’s folk-roots approach to storytelling with more contemporary elements of R&B and indie rock.

HARPDOG BROWN & THE UPTOWN BLUES BAND

“Music can heal people if they pay attention to the messages in these songs.” Harpdog Brown delivers these messages using vintage sound, whether it be with his lowdown classic blues band, the Travelin’ Blues Show, or with his new Uptown Blues Band. Harpdog says, “Blues has a healing power. It’s a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives. We www.harpdogbrown.com help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they realize we all have our issues, and that’s OK.” Vancouver-based Harpdog Brown was born in Edmonton in 1962; he was an adopted child who felt somewhat detached his whole life–it was “a lifelong battle of not feeling like I belonged. I feel like I was born for the circus, you know, born to travel. The blues tapped me on the shoulder years ago and said ‘this is where you belong, son’.”

MAURICE AND THE STIFF SISTERS

Maurice and the Stiff Sisters play energetic rock ’n’ roll with singable hooks and no shortage of showmanship. Think Elvis Costello, Jonathan Richman, mauriceandthestiffsisters.bandcamp.com and Nick Lowe’s Stiff Records (no relation) paired with gritty Stax Records horn stabs and Bob Pollard’s high kicks. The songs range widely from catchy pop and cheeky sambas to 6/8 soul ballads and jet-takeoff psych-rock. Audiences are treated to a showcase of airtight, danceable rhythms, the crack horn duo of Bryant Byers (trombone) and Aaron Mattison (tenor saxophone), and a heavy dose of wailing 12-string guitars and flying hair provided by Maurice himself.

OUR VISION

Inspire our community with the power of music.

OUR MISSION

Raise funds to support the needs in our local community, including but not limited to music scholarships for local students.

2019 SCHOLARSHIPS ED BRIDGES MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is given in honor of Ed Bridges, who was the Oak Harbor High School music director in the 1970s. He was an inspiration to many young musicians who have gone on to make music their careers. We awarded scholarships in his name to two music students on Whidbey Island.

OHMF Fully funded by donations and grants and brought to you by a remarkable team of volunteers, Oak Harbor Music Festival has hosted a weekend of free musical entertainment for the last seven years–every Labor Day weekend. We are so pleased that you’ve joined us for this extraordinary community event, where you’ll find good food, friendly people, and over 30 acts performing throughout the weekend on two stages. We are confident that everyone who loves music–all ages and every demographic–will find something to love about our event.

DONATE In addition to organizing a musical extravaganza for all to enjoy, one of the Festival’s overriding goals is to provide Island County music students with scholarships, and we are always grateful for donations toward this cause and toward the festival overall. As a 501(c)(3), Oak Harbor Music Festival is a nonprofit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. We are sincerely thankful for any amount you are able to share. Donations may be sent to: Oak Harbor Music Festival P.O. Box 987 Oak Harbor, WA 98277 Or visit www.oakharborfestival.com

TEEN TALENT WINNERS KEELIE PARTRIDGE Keelie is a passionate human being. She works hard to do good in the world through music, discourse, and understanding. Music has been a part of her life since she first picked up a guitar at the age of three. Ever since, she has been writing songs, playing instruments, and learning as much as she can about the art of music. Through her original compositions, she hopes to influence the way people view their surroundings and shed light on how much emotion is present in everything we do.

R0SAHLEE VON KAPPEL Rosahlee is a 16-year-old singer and songwriter from Washington who plays piano, ukulele, guitar, and bass. At age 13, she wrote her first original composition on ukulele called “Can’t Tell Me No,” which she performed at her first annual Oak Harbor Music Festival in 2017. It has recently been released and is now available on all major music platforms.

CELINA ZARATE Celina is a 15-year-old sophomore at Oak Harbor High School. She’s involved with the worship team for Family Bible Church and also for the youth group there. She absolutely loves choir and is involved in Treble Choir at school. Her favorite things to do are to go on long walks at sunset, go on crazy adventures with her friends, and sing to her heart’s content.

MAJOR MINORS Major Minors is an acapella group made up of six OHHS students. They have been performing since the fall of 2018. Even though they love to participate in normal high school activities, there isn’t a day when they aren’t practicing their music! Together, they inspire each other to become better musicians.

KYLE HUANG Thirteen-year-old Kyle has been studying piano with teacher Anna Vavilova for seven years. Kyle has received multiple awards from many music festivals in Canada and the US. Kyle also plays clarinet. To advance in his piano playing, Kyle participated in WMA Advanced Piano Camp in France in 2016 and was among the World of Music and Arts students who travelled to Italy last summer to study and play with an orchestra.

ROBBIE WALDEN BAND

www.robbiewaldenband.com

When The Rooster Crows is Robbie Walden Band’s third full-length album, released Feb. 15. Over the years, speculations have been made about the band’s strong similarities to Texas/red dirt music, something Robbie himself considers a great compliment; Randy Rogers, Jason Eady, and Jason Boland are among his biggest influences. The recipe of this five-piece band, however, is four parts Washington and one part Idaho, lives cultivated in the big sky country under the constant influence of the working man. And while their combined mental chemistry is the very definition of the American West, their story-driven and harmonic-soaked sound is the absolute definition of Americana.
