Rodman, CEO/Founder of Right Brain Aerobics programs for a free presentation introducing right brain skills for “Right Brain Mind Power at Any Age!” at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, Monday, August 12 at 1 pm. Is it possible that we can develop “right brain mind power” even as we age? That all of us have a “multidimensional creative intelligence” as seniors or at any age that is untapped and untrained, just waiting for us to access? Learn the 10 Tips to Unleash Creative Mind, Get Healthier, Happier and Gutsier at every Age! With Right Brain Aerobics, learn the techniques that can be applied to anything from a better golf game and better

relaxed sleep at night to better learning/cognition skills, painting, parenting, grand-parenting -- this is used to teach many things! Research shows that just a few minutes of mental focus meditative mind exercise daily can even increase gray matter! (See www.rightbrainaerobics.com/RBA_ Articles.html). RSVP by calling the Front Desk, 279-4580. This presentation is part of a “Right Brain Summer School” series. “Right Brain Aerobics Level I” will be held Mondays, August 19 and 26 from 1–4 pm. a group at the center on an ongoing basis! You will be eligible for the advanced mental skills “Remote Viewing + Intuition” class to be taught later in the year by Sandra. Right Brain Aerobics was created by Sandra Rodman bringing decades as a senior executive in Fortune 500 and non-profit and the arts to this multicomponent program. A national trainer and featured speaker, she has led workshops in right brain aerobics for executives of CNN/Turner, Microsoft, HP, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Stevenson University, the Association of Internal Management Consultants and more.

“I was shocked when I discovered just how powerful the mind really can become with age, and that these kinds of supersensory right brain mental skills aren’t trained in K-12 right into college and business! It opens whole new doors to life. After leaving Fortune 500 companies when I was in my 60’s, I accidentally discovered a surprising, hidden intelligence when I increased my daily right brain exercises to new levels. How could I suddenly tap a kind of ‘inner genius’ creative mind that I had no idea existed!? I thought that if I could start doing this at my age, everyone could! And started developing easy techniques to teach how to do it,” said Sandra. She believes that all of us have a powerful “inner coach” – if we start putting right brain time on the calendar!

The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

STEPPING IT UP! I sits and I sits and I sits. Sometimes I just sits and thinks and sometimes I just sits. I wish it were because I’m writing the next best selling novel or play or reading a really great book with thousands of pages. But I’m not. I just sits. Alots. I needed to get active. I’m not really a Couch Potato more of a Recliner Chair Hostess Cupcake. The city had a walking program last summer but after seeing the thousands of miles everyone was doing, I decided to sits some more. To me, if you’re going to walk, you need to have some place to go otherwise you’re a Forrest Gump walking blindly through life. Pretending to be Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Benet walking with Mr. Darcy might have worked. Alas, there aren’t any moors to walk through as in a good Bronte novel. Not even a good sand dune. Mike started walking to his meetings at City Hall from the Center; I lived in fear that he would ask me to. I would need two days of vacation leave just to walk there and back and another two days of sick leave to recover. Mine is not an athletic body, never has been. It’s good for hugs and sitting on the beach with a good book. In the past, summer walking programs never worked out. People were excited to start but when it came to planning, there was never a good day or time everybody could agree on. Some people wanted trails, some wanted routes with sidewalks, some wanted to bring their four legged friends and some did not want any dogs allowed. The longest a walking program lasted was three weeks. Stumbling across an article about walking and fighting memory loss got me thinking. First, I liked the pedometers Mike and Pat got from the City’s walking program last year and comparing their totals. Second, I came across a website promoting walking but instead of miles, concentrate on the number of steps you take, with a goal of reaching 10,000 steps a day. Their message was, no matter what your level of activity is you can increase it, with daily steps. My “aha” moment arrived. The “Step It Up!” summer walking program was born! Mike liked it. Pat liked it. We put our heads together and got Wal-Mart and Northend Fitness to sponsor us. We hoped we would get 25 people. All I can say is WOW! (Walk On Whidbey!) We have 65 people signed up and logging in their daily steps each week. Each week they log in, people get to put their name in the drawing we’ll have at the Cool Down Party in September. Their names go in for every time they get me out of my office or catch me calling the front desk for a phone number. Lilian makes me circle the tables on my way to the little girl’s room. Taking an extra water pill also increases the number of steps. Even Mr. Volunteer joined. Looking at me he hinted he needed a walking partner. Huh, I don’t think so. We go for a walk and he’s half way down the beach while I’m still getting out of the car. Now he thinks he wants a dog. “If I had a dog, I could take him for walks.” Right. I had to remind him he’s not 10 years old anymore and I’m not stupid. I suggested he take the Princess for walks. He gets his steps in and sleeps a little better each night, The Princess has quality time with Granddad, and I don’t have a dog. Win-Win if I do say so myself. Now, all of you Madagascar Fans sing and dance with me, “I like to move it, move it, move it.” That will put a few extra steps on the daily log sheet.

STEP IT UP! People are really Stepping It Up around the Oak Harbor Senior Center! We had hoped for 25 participants and WOW!!!! We have 65 people registered!! Participants are at different levels of activity. The goal for everyone is to increase their personal level of activity. A sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. For these people adding steps has many health benefits. A reasonable goal for most people is to increase average daily steps each week by 500 per day until you can easily average 10,000 per day. Example: If you currently average 3000 steps each day, your goal for week one is 3500 each day. Your week 2 goal is 4000 each day. Continue to increase each week and you should be averaging 10,000 steps by the end of September. You may have less or more. Continue to track your daily steps and keep notes on how you feel, how your body is improving, or other changes you are making to improve your health. At any point you feel that you are progressing too rapidly slow down a bit and try smaller increases.

Weekly Tips will be at the Front Desk and you can also check them out on the Oak Harbor Senior Center Face-

book page. Each time you check in with your weekly step total, pick up a bottle of water and your name will also be entered for one of the Door Prizes at our Cool Down Party Monday, September 16 at 1:00 pm. Several people have had their names entered for getting Roxann out of her office. A BIG Thank-you to Walmart, Northend Fitness, Barb Spence and Tom Piper for their support. And remember, “Move It, Move It, Move It, I love to Move It, Move It, Move It!”

Walking – An Easy Way To Fight Memory Loss

New research indicates that walking six miles to nine miles every week can prevent brain shrinkage and memory loss. According to the American Academy of Neurology, elderly adults who walked between 6 and 9 miles per week had more gray matter in their brains nines years after the start of the study than people who didn’t walk as much . Researchers say that those who walked the most cut their rise of developing memory loss in half.

What Senior Information & Assistance Provides You won’t have to go it alone; a support group can help. Simply put, what happens in a Support Group is something that each of us already knows to be good “medicine;” It just helps to talk with other people who are in the same boat. As a caregiver for your senior parents, spouse or partner, you may be feeling alone. You don’t have as much time to socialize now that you have to care for your elderly relative, and even your own family, and friends may not understand what you are going through. If this sounds like you, you might consider joining our support group. During times of Illness, relationship problems or major life changes, support groups can be a big help. Support Groups bring together people facing similar issues, create a network of caring and supportive people, become a safe place to express yourself, help you understand you are not alone and help you discover how others have handled similar situations. While not everyone wants or needs

support beyond that offered by family and friends, many find it helpful to turn to others outside a person’s immediate circle. A support group is not a therapy group. Its aim is to help you cope better and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. Sometimes we feel that our loads are too much of a burden to others so we keep things inside. In a support group everyone is sharing the load. A bit about sharing….

If you are interested, or would like more information, Please contact Nadine Joy, Certified Family Caregiver Support Program Coordinator at Senior Services of Island County. Her office is located in the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Feel free to send a note or email, visit the office or call.

Yes, sharing is part of being in a support group. But if that part sounds scary or unfamiliar, that’s normal. Just showing up and listening is a big part of being in a group too. In the fall we will be starting a support group for family caregivers. This will be a support group aimed to assist individuals caring for a parent, spouse, or partner. We are presently looking for feedback regarding interest in the group, and which day (and what time of day) works for those of you who wish to see the group take off.

FUN WITH THE SENIOR CENTER Boots were Scootin’ at the Boogie!

A BIG Thank-you to DJ Charlie Moore & Regency on Whidbey for sponsoring the 2nd Annual Boot Scootin’ Boogie.

was a beautiful Pacific Northwest Day on the Rosario ▲ ItResort & Orcus Island Trip.

Correction In the July issue of the Second Wind, a picture of members of the Oak Harbor Senior Center enjoying a day at the PBY Memorial was incorrect. The aircraft pictured is the first production EA-6B produced by Grumman. It was taken in front of the EA-6B Memorial for Fallen Prowler Aviators & Crew on Ault Field (the second part of the tour) instead of the PBY located on the Seaplane Base. A Big Thank you to Skip Johnson for correctly identifying the plane. Another Big Thank you to the PBY Foundation for a coordinating a great trip that included Ault Field and lunch at the Officer’s Club. It was a fun day!

It’s Mariners Day for the Oak Harbor Senior Center. at Safeco Field on Wednesday, August 28. Grab your peanuts and crackerjacks! Let’s root, root, root for the home team. Everyone can celebrate by wearing your Mariner T-shirt and/or ball cap. It’s Sodo Mojo!!
