LIFE, HEALTH & HAPPINESS FOR NORTH WHIDBEY’S 50-PLUS CROWD VOLUME 1 • ISSUE 7 • DECEMBER 2013

Safe In The Sound Disaster Preparedness For Seniors By Seniors - Take responsibility to protect your life! Prepare NOW for a sudden emergency. It’s not a matter of if but when a winter storm will hit Whidbey Island. Emergencies and disasters can strike quickly and without warning and can force you to evacuate your neighborhood or be confined to your home. What would you do if your basic services—water, gas, electricity or communications— were cut off? Learn how to protect yourself and cope with disaster by planning ahead. Even if you have physical limitations, you can still protect and prepare yourself. Local officials and relief workers may not be able to reach everyone right away. You can deal with disasters better by preparing in advance and by working with those in your support network: your family, neighbors and friends as a team. Knowing what to do is your

Vfw Ladies Auxiliary Seniors Christmas Luncheon The VFW’s Annual Seniors Christmas Luncheon, is Wednesday, Dec 18, Noon to 3 pm. All seniors are welcome. responsibility. Join us Monday, December 9 at 1:00 pm for “Safe In The Sound” to learn and discuss the three things you can do to prepare. Whidbey Island is a beautiful place to live but when disasters strike, we are cut off from the mainland and it may take days if not weeks for power to be restored. Living on an island presents unique challenges especially to those living alone and/or dealing with health issues. The presentation is the result of a group of older adults who experienced a two-week power outage when a massive ice storm hit the Greater Rochester, New York, area. They were unprepared. They know now that if they had only taken a few simple steps to prepare themselves, they could have eliminated many of the hardships they had to endure. Some were in good health but not quite as agile as they used to be, some had hearing or vision problems, others used a cane or wheelchair. Whatever the limitations, they still needed to be prepared. You can prepare!!! There will be handouts, displays and other information available specific to our community. Earthquakes, severe wind and snow storms are prevalent to our island. You will be able to register with the OH Fire & Rescue if you have special needs that will make you a prior-

ity to bring to an emergency shelter. Learn how to register yourself on the Red Cross website as “Safe and Well”. After a disaster, letting your family and friends know that you are safe and well can bring your loved ones great peace of mind. This website is designed to help make that communication easier. If you would like a Three Day Emergency Food Kit, sign up with payment of $9 by Friday, December 6.

Hip Or Knee Joint Replacement Patient Education Seminar Are you considering hip or knee joint replacement surgery? Join Dr. Michael Picco, chief of surgery at Whidbey General Hospital, at the Oak Harbor Library on Monday, December 2 at 1:00 pm. Learn who should consider these two surgeries, what each one entails, and the benefits of choosing this approach. The seminar, which is sponsored by Whidbey General Hospital, will be repeated at the Freeland Library on Monday, Dec 9 at 1:00 pm.

Merry Christmas To All And To All A Good Night...

December 2013 When I came home from school crying because some kids called me a baby for still believing in Santa, mom asked what happened. During Story Time, when Mrs. Brown read a Santa story, a couple of the boys kept snickering. When she asked them what was funny, Gordon laughed and said, “Who believes in Santa? It’s just made up.” Some of the girls gasped at Gordon’s sneer. Not me, oh no. I glared at him and said, “I believe in Santa. He is real. Santa called me on the phone when I was little.” He and a few other boys started rolling on the floor laughing and said, “That was your dad on the phone calling from the neighbors.” “No it wasn’t. My daddy was in the Navy, in Japan.” They kept laughing til Mrs. Brown had enough, closed her book and told us Story Time was over. At recess I was cornered and called a baby by the little brutes until the playground lady told them to leave me alone.

The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

THE SANTA TALK Christmas this year is going to be a little sad. The Princess is growing up. I know it is a good thing. It is also a little sad. It is the last year she will really and truly believe in Santa. She probably has some of it figured out. Last year was one of the BIG questions that starts the magic to fade, “How can Santa be in so many places at once?” While out shopping with her mother she noticed Santa was at Wal-mart, K-Mart, the mall and ringing the bell at several other places. Her mother gave her the explanation we had once given her, “Santa can’t be everywhere right now. He’s getting his sled ready so he has a lot of helpers.” For the rest of the season The Princess assured us it was just his helper, whenever she saw Santa. I thought for sure some wise (?) child would bust her bubble. As far as I can tell it didn’t happen. This year she is in first grade. For most of us, this was the year the Truth was revealed. The bubble will burst, but I’m ready.

As I walked home from school, my heart was heavy. It couldn’t be true. Gordon said Santa was really our parents staying up late after we go to bed. He knew because he saw his father putting together his new bike. Besides, if there really was a Santa, how come poor kids don’t get anything? It made me cry more. When I got home I asked mom if it was true. Mom put her arms around me and simply said. “I guess you’re old enough to know the Truth. You know how we told you that Santa has a lot of helpers? Mommies and daddies are his helpers.” Instead of being shocked, it started to make sense to me. Still, another little fear started to raise its ugly head. I had to ask, “Will Santa stop coming?” Mom hugged me and said, “In our house, as long as you believe in Santa, he’ll come.” Mom then told me about the real Santa, he had a different name and he gave toys to the children in his village and it spread from there. He now had several names depending on the country you lived in. I liked Kris Kringle the best. Mom asked me to help her keep the secret and not tell my little sisters. I felt like a big girl now, older, wiser but a little sad. With age comes responsibility. For years I thought I’d done a pretty good job helping my little sisters to believe in Santa until one year Michele got mad at me and said, “Oh for crying out loud, I’ve known about Santa since first grade. Mom just wanted us to keep playing along so you wouldn’t get upset.” Everyone was in on the secret now. Santa kept coming. Later, as an adult, I asked mom who called me that Christmas Eve long ago. She looked at me, smiled and said, “It was Santa.” Riding in the car recently, The Princess said, “Nana, you know the best part about Christmas isn’t just getting presents, it’s about giving presents to others.” I think the Santa Talk will go well.
