LIFE, HEALTH & HAPPINESS FOR NORTH WHIDBEY’S 50-PLUS CROWD VOLUME 1 • ISSUE 8 • JANUARY 2014
Caregiver Education And Support Group Support Group provides support and education for caregivers When loved ones are placed into the role of providing care for family or friends, they are often unprepared for the stress that can result. Feelings of guilt, depression, and anxiety are common among caregivers. Often caregivers pour their energy into caring for loved ones at the expense of their own health. Caregivers deserve care of their own. Senior Services of Island County and the Oak Harbor Senior Center, is proud to announce the “Caregiver Education and Support Group” led by Caregiver Specialists, Nadine Joy and Julie Fontaine of Senior Services of Island County. Topics and discussion will focus on maximizing resources, enhancing coping skills, building relationships with peers, and increasing care giving competence. The group will meet the third Wednesday of every month from 1:30-3 pm, beginning Wednesday, February 19th. To register, please call the Oak Harbor Senior Information and Assistance office at 360-675-0311. The meetings will take place at Summer Hill in Oak Harbor (165 SW 6th Avenue). The group is open to any adult caring for a family member or friend.
Bad Weather Closure The Oak Harbor Senior Center will follow the Oak Harbor School District closure policies. Activities, meals, trips, and classes at the Oak Harbor Senior Center will be cancelled when the Oak Harbor School District is closed because of inclement weather. If the South Whidbey School District is closed, the Meals On Wheels and Site Meals programs will be closed. BRIEFS continued on page 2

Have you heard of Reiki and wondered what it is – or how to pronounce it? Or questioned if acupuncture could help that low back pain? The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry
“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
Words Of Wisdom Out of the mouths of babes… When my children were little and said something out of the ordinary, I just thought they were being cute. Little kids saying cute things. For instance, when my son was in second grade he drew a picture of Abraham Lincoln reading in front of a fireplace with logs burning. Pretty sophisticated for a second grader I thought. It was illustrating a poem their teacher had them write out (practicing printing). I asked him where he got the idea for the picture (thinking he must have seen it in a book). He looked at me like I was from another planet then said, “I looked it up in my mind.” We got quite a chuckle from that. Cute. Years later I realize how profound that was for describing the ability to create – I looked it up in my mind. Another time I got a call from the school to bring clean pants for my daughter. She had an accident at school and needed clean pants and underwear. When I got there, she was sniffling and I asked her what happened. She looked up at me, started crying again and said, “Oh mommy, my bottom threw up.” Once again, cute. Later I realized, Wow, that is the most accurate description I have ever heard for diarrhea. I have the great privilege of helping to raise my granddaughter, The Princess. This time around I better appreciate the wonders of childhood, slow down and enjoy it like I never did as a parent. One draw back is I can’t spoil her or indulge her and then send her home for someone else to deal with it. I never believed in doing that anyway. I’ve always felt we do the children in our lives a great disservice by not helping them to have good manners, a helping attitude, thinking of others before oneself, be a good citizen and always say their prayers. I believe in children having routines, chores, responsibilities and consequences. Parents and Grandparents need unconditional love and lots of patience. Through The Princess’s eyes, I see the wonderful world we live, in different ways. She reminds me of the important things such as feeding the bunnies that live under the rhodie bush, do not mow down the fairies circles, collect abandoned bird nests, leave no seashells alone on the beach. We shouldn’t talk naughty or hurt peoples feelings by telling them to go to their room. Make sure everybody has a cookie. If Charlie Brown is your friend you should give him a valentine. Be nice. Instead of cute, I recognize them as words of wisdom from the mouths of babes. My favorite was after she and Granddad went Christmas shopping together. The Princess was bubbling over with excitement over the gifts she bought for mama and Nana. After describing mama’s gifts and swearing granddad to secrecy, she looked at me and said, “I’m going to stop talking now, it’s too easy for secrets to slip out.” Wow, I thought. The tongue is in a slippery place. When we talk too much, a lot of things can slip out. Words of Wisdom from a little child. Side note: As I write this we are only 10 days away from Christmas. The Princess has made rubber band bracelets for 24 children and teacher in her first grade class, 14 bracelets for children and teacher at Sunday School, another 20 for family and friends. The bracelets are in Christmas colors; rainbow colors, primary colors and a few that are favorite colors of the receiver. Last night she asked me, “Nana, is Santa Clause going to visit me this year?” I asked her, “Do you believe in Santa?” “Oh yes.” “Of course he’s coming, as long as you believe in Santa, he will always come.” “Oh I believe Nana, I believe.” “Good” I replied, “Because when people quit believing in Santa, all they get for Christmas is underwear.” Happy New Year! May you have Peace and Joy this coming year.
