July 2013

The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

THE BIG 60 When I turned the Big 40, several of the volunteers celebrated by draping my office in black, gifts of Old Age pills, a black beret, and sympathy cards for loosing my youth. The reality check came when one of the ladies said to another, “Life didn’t start for me until I turned 40. What’s she going to do when she turns 50?” When the Big 50 came around I became an official member of the Senior Center, no longer just staff, and decided to throw a potluck picnic for everybody. My theme was “Screw The Golden Years - I may be getting older but I don’t have to grow up”. I was now half a century old. Sobering. I didn’t get too much sympathy then either since most of the guests were in their 70’s and 80’s. Well the Big 60 washes up on beach this month and Mr. Volunteer has been over thinking this one. The man loves to come up with surprises. The problem is (in this case, it’s a good problem) he wants to tell you ahead of time what he’s going to do or give. Sublte is not his middle name. Case in point. A couple of weeks ago he comes into the kitchen and announces he knows my 6oth is coming up. Surprise, surprise, like I was going forget. (Remember he is the Family History guy and the only data he doesn’t have on my family group sheet is my death date.) “I know what I’m going to get you for your birthday!” “A roll of quarters?” That’s what he gave me one year. “No, better than that. I’m going to take you sky diving!!!!! Something you’ve never done, to celebrate your 60th birthday!” “Really? There’s a very good reason why I’ve never done that.” (I think he’s trying to fill in that blank on the family group sheet.) “It’ll be fun.” “For who?” He just wants to watch me scream like a little girl and wet myself. “I thought you would enjoy soaring through the sky like a bird.” “Do I look like Super Girl?” “It’s something you can tell the grandkids.” “I think I prefer telling Valerie why Granddad doesn’t live here anymore.” “Well how about Bungie Jumping?”

“What?!?! Are you trying to kill me?” “No I just wanted you to do something fun for your birthday.” “That’s not my idea of having fun.” “Well, what would you like to do?” “I was thinking of a trip.” Valerie got excited and said, “I know Nana, Disneyland!” I was thinking a Mexican Carribean Cruise would be a nice way to celebrate. Mr. Volunteer thinks I’m considering a Hot Air Balloon ride. To divert his attention I invited him to join me on the Cracked Crab Cruise. Now that’s the perfect day, crab feast on a boat. Life doesn’t get any better.

TAKING OUT THE TRASH 101 BY Linda Thom, WSU Waste Wise Volunteer We used to give little thought to taking out the trash. Some of us remember just burning the trash in the backyard. Today we know that papers, plastics and cans are resources to recover. We know that chemicals around the house can cause personal injury, start fires and pollute our bays and aquifers when disposed of improperly. The curbside recycling programs in Oak Harbor and Coupeville help residents divert recycles from the trash but some of our trash should not go in either the trash or recycle bins. They are called household hazardous waste (HHW) and include among other things: fluorescent bulbs, electronics, automotive products, flares, pool and spa supplies, oil-based paints and solvents, aerosols, batter-

ies, household cleaners and garden products. This list does not cover all hazardous waste items. Other important disposal information includes taping battery terminals to prevent any residual charge from starting fires such as those that have ignited both structures and vehicles. Also, empty containers which contained hazardous materials such as bleach or motor oil should go into the trash and not into the recycle bins. Disposing of most hazardous waste is free and convenient. On north and central Whidbey Island, residents can take most of these items to the North Whidbey Transfer Station at 3151, Oak Harbor Rd. Phone: 675-6161 or they can go to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the Transfer

Station south of Coupeville at 20018 SR 20. The Oak Harbor facility is open 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. Coupeville hours are: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday or Friday or by appointment. Call: 679-7386. Workers at county transfer stations are friendly. Ask and they will help. Another great place for household hazardous waste (HHW) disposal information is the Coupeville facility

listed above, 679-7386. They can answer any questions you have about recycling and tell you where and how to dispose of household appliances, medications, ammunition and hypodermic needles. Always remember to read the label. CAUTION, WARNING or DANGER, indicates a potential for harm. Know that you have a free place to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste.

What Senior Information & Assistance Provides Protecting yourself against scams I am called several times a week by a Senior reporting a scam or suspecting that they may have been victimized. These are very smart and savvy folks, your friends and neighbors who, in all honesty, are often surprised at how “intelligent” scams have become. Seniors, their loved ones – as well as caregivers – need to be aware of the importance of being vigilant in regard to scams. Seniors are being targeted by fraudsters and con artists. By following some basic steps such as taking time to consider all offers carefully, seniors can avoid becoming a victim. The following six scams that commonly target senior citizens: Grandparent scam — Victims receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member stranded far from home. They usually beg to have the matter kept private and say they are being held in jail, need car repairs or other assistance and money has to be wired to them immediately. Sweepstakes and Lottery Scams –Typically, the victim receives a letter in the mail stating they have won a lottery or sweepstakes. The letter instructs the victim to deposit an enclosed check and then wire a portion back to cover taxes, insurance or administrative fees. While these checks clear initially, the money will be removed when the bank discovers the check is phony.

of seniors who have recently lost a loved one, such as a spouse. They call the widow or widower and claim that their spouse had outstanding debts that need to be paid immediately. Deceptive Professionals – While many scams targeting senior citizens are “faceless,” some scammers knock on the front door, claiming to be experts in their fields. These so-called professionals will lie about the extent of problems with your home or furnace, and then inflate prices in an attempt to profit off trusting seniors. Investment Opportunities - These schemes promise big returns but offer few details. We’d like to think things happen to “somebody else” but, I have been working at the Senior Information and Referral office for four months now, and have talked to people in the community that have experienced each of these scams. Please contact Nadine Joy at the North Whidbey office in Oak Harbor, (360)675-0311, joyna@dshs.wa.gov or Chasitiy Smith for South Whidbey at Bayview, (360)321-1600.

PBY Memorial Tour

Medicare Scams – Scammers often claim to be with Medicare and ask for personal information such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, credit card or bank account numbers. Potential victims might be given any number of excuses to provide this information including that an error needs to be fixed, that he or she is part of a survey or eligible to receive free products or can sign up for a new prescription drug plan. Bereavement Scams – Scammers will go so far as to try to take advantage

Members of the Oak Harbor Senior Center enjoy a day at the PBY Memorial.

SUMMERTIME TIP Get rid of pesky flies by pinning zip lock bags filled with water and four pennies by windows, porches, wherever flies are a problem. Check it out on Google. It is believed the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it’s like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. Flies are prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc. they simply won’t take the risk of being around that much perceived action. You may see an occasional fly but it won’t hang around for long.
