The Whidbey Walkers have been walking along Whidbey Island trails since 1969. The group was originally started by Eileen Criscolua, Ethel Libbey and Margaret Walgren as a fun way to spend time together, exercise, and explore the many hiking and walking opportunities Whidbey has to offer. Although the membership of this group is constantly evolving the commitment to the cause remains strong. The Whidbey Island Walkers have covered trails from Anacortes to the south end of the Island. They usually walk about 2 hours and stop for a snack or lunch break. At the end of each walk, the group decides where they will go the following week. Walkers are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a walking stick if desired. They are also encouraged to bring a snack/lunch, water, and extra layer on a cool day and something to sit on if desired. This group is currently looking for new members and would love to have you join the fun! This invitation is extended to anyone who might be interested. The group meets

every Wednesday at 9:15AM in the Rite Aid parking lot. From there everyone will carpool to the designated walking trail to enjoy a few hours of hiking and socializing. Each hike can cover distances of 2-3 miles depending on terrain, elevation and weather conditions.

If you have any questions or are interested in joining the group for one of their walks please don’t hesitate to contact the group facilitator Marie at (360) 675-7744. Marie is an extremely inviting individual and would love to hear from you!

Volunteers needed! Do you have free time? Would you like to make new friends and be a part of a supportive community? Then come join us at the Oak Harbor Senior Center! The Senior Center is in need of volunteers. We have many different opportunities for every type of interest or skill. There are two areas in which we have the highest need.

Are you a full-time caregiver needing respite? Time Together Adult Day Services has openings for Oak Harbor Residents! Time Together has been a valued service of Senior Services of Island County for almost 20 years, and is Whidbey Islands only Adult Day Program. We are hoping to work with Island Transit to create a direct Para-Transit Route from Oak Harbor to Bayview Senior Center enabling participants to travel safely from door to door. This new service will enable caregivers to receive five and a half hours of respite! Senior adults with physical or cognitive impairments associated with stroke, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s and other physical conditions face challenges that can lead to social isolation and depression. Participants in this adult day program enjoy a unified, uplifting community that is uniquely theirs. They are among friends who are happy to hear their stories, learn about their lives and reminisce. When at Time Together, they form a cohesive “family” where differences are accepted, where laughter, tears and precious moments are shared. Enriching activities enjoyed by Time Together participants

include music, dancing, exercise for the body and mind, hands-on creative projects, outings, gardening, lively discussions, and games. If you are a 24-hour caregiver, you need to stay physically and emotionally healthy, and to do that you need time and space from your role as caregiver. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity for social engagement for your loved one who might otherwise be isolated at home. Time Together meets five days a week at the Bayview Senior Center and offers respite to caregivers and meaningful engagement for participants.

1.) Receptionist/Greeter: This is a great opportunity for someone with a positive, outgoing attitude and a willingness to learn simple secretarial skills. No skills necessary, we provide all training and support! 2.) Travel: We have two needs in our travel program. First, easy-going individuals interested in sitting at our travel desk who will answer questions and help members sign up for trips. Second, creative and responsible individuals interested in organizing and leading a group on a unique adventure as an escort! If you are at all interested and want to learn more please contact Mary Anderson at (360) 279-4581 or come see us at the Oak Harbor Senior Center! These are incredible opportunities to not only support the Oak Harbor Senior Center but will lead to an array of personal benefits.

Word Search

Passports, Photos and More! The year 2015 was the third busiest year for passport applications behind 2007 and 2008. There were over 15 million passports processed and issued! Of that number 265,450 were processed in Seattle. The U.S. Department of State anticipates processing 16 million applications in 2016 and over 20 million in 2017! One of the major driving forces behind this upswing in applications is the 10 year anniversary of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The WHTI first went into effect in 2007 requiring U.S. citizens to have passports to travel to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. An adult passport is valid for 10 years which means there will be a large wave of renewals in 2016 and 2017. This will most likely slow down the application process for both renews and first time applicants. The Oak Harbor Senior Center is here to help! We currently take appointments Monday-Friday from 10:00AM-2:30PM for applications that require Acceptance Agency processing. We understand these times can be limiting and are currently looking into options for expanding our passport office hours. Feel free to call any time to set up your appointment. Slots can fill up fast so please plan accordingly based on your travel plans.

Two recent books-to-movies, Wild, and A Walk in the Woods, are based on true-life experiences. But what do they NOT tell you about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail or Appalachian Trail? Talk with a panel of thru-hikers and learn about the many ways to go about a long distance hike. Find out how to prepare, learn about equipment options and common medical issues, and ask the panel about life on the trail. Vin Sherman has nearly completed the PCT, hiking it in sections on his annual vacation. Teresa and Tom Ellis hiked the AT and then started on the PCT. Maribeth Crandell hiked the AT as a Flip-Flop, hiking half the trail going north in the spring, and the other half going south in the fall.
