The Birds Of Whidbey Island Important Things To Remember 2015 SPRING TRAVEL SIGN- UPS THURSDAY, APRIL 2 8:30am-3:00pm
By Barb Spence
You may not be aware of this fact, but our Director, Mike McIntyre, picks a new theme for his OHSC office decor at the beginning of each new year. Two years ago, his theme was OHSC World War II Vets. Last year, the theme was about all the programs offered at OHSC. This year, Mike has chosen as his theme, the birds of Whidbey Island. He is gathering a collection of different birds, from photos to sculptures to paintings to ceramic statues. Please do not hesitate to stop in and take a look as he gathers his collection for 2015.
Mike’s choice of themes for 2015 has caused me to contemplate the reason we love birds. But perhaps a better question is, when it comes to birds, what’s not to love!
Birds instill a sense of wonder and excitement when we see them soaring high in the sky. We love waking up to a beautiful symphony of songbirds. We enjoy seeing the hair we brushed off our beloved dog or cat has now become the soft lining of a wren’s nest built on our fencepost. The hooting of owls in the dark of the night touches our inner soul like few other sounds can. The sound of a large flock of geese overhead migrating to faraway places can captivate our imagination.
Sometimes birds make us face the realities of nature in a way that we have largely lost in modern society. We may visit a lake in a park and see an eagle hungry for lunch relentlessly circling some ducks. In this situation, we struggle to know who to root for and it can tear us apart emotionally and intellectually. Nature often makes us face the harsh realities of life and birds seem to do this often.
W.I.G.S “A Beginner’s Guide To Your Family History” will be presented Wednesdays, March 11, 18, and 25 at 6:30pm. The Whidbey Island Genealogical Searchers (WIGS) and members of the Genealogical Society of South Whidbey will host the classes. Basic genealogical research principles and strategies needed to find the pieces of your family history puzzle will be introduced. The focus will be on sources for basic family history documents, how and where to find them, including the use of digital resources. There is no fee for these classes, but preregistration is required by Friday, March 6. Please call the Oak Harbor Senior Center at 2794580 or come in to sign-up. The classes will be limited to 15 people. WIGS is a non profit organization, located in the city of Oak Harbor. The society was established in 1993 by Janet Enzmann, Jim Terry, and mentor, Laura Sparr, to promote interest in family history, educate its members in research techniques, and assist anyone in their quest of their family tree. Membership is open to everyone.
We are very pleased to announce that representatives from Costco will be visiting the OHSAC Wednesday, March 18 1pm to talk to members about services provided by our local (Burlington) Costco. We are looking forward to this very special day.

PATHWAYS COUNSELING Presents Good Grief: 12 Strategies for Coping with Grief and Loss By Barb Spence
Mark Lucero, LMHC, is bringing Good Grief: 12 Strategies for Coping with Grief and Loss with an open group discussion period, to the Oak Harbor Senior Activity Center March 9 at 1:00pm. Located in historic downtown Coupeville, Mark offers coaching and support for life transitions. He explains that every person experiences periods of major transition in life. A transitional phase may begin with some kind of loss: death, divorce, change in health, or any circumstances that life presents. As a Life Transitions Coach, Mark helps with a primary focus on providing support and guidance to people who are navigating major life transitions. A Life Transitions Coach serves as the “in-between space” for people who want structure, professionalism, and confidentiality but have no need for formal psychotherapy.
Mark offers a fresh, caring, and supportive way to help us smoothly move through the transitions of loss, through the stages of grief, and how to nurture ourselves through the process.
Everyone can benefit from this one-hour presentation and group discussion. Please sign up today at OHSC Front Desk.

New ways to navigate, Icons to hide or show. Why do things have to change? What’s wrong with status quo? I can’t find the spellcheck. BCCs list no more. Why can’t I insert pics From email as before?” I’m ill from all this change. There just must be a cure. It seems the more I learn, The less I know for sure.

Attitude change, that’s it. I’ll try and try and try. A two-year old can do this, So tell me – why can’t I?
Birds can somehow make us stop taking things for granted. They defy all rules of the mammal kingdom. They have bills and beaks for mouths, feathers for hair and some extraordinarily superhuman abilities - telescopic vision, an ability to traverse continents, remember maps, weave pieces of art, molt into a different suit every season. They are a reminder that mystery will always prevail. We can spend hours watching their natural grace and being in awe of their beauty and form. Birds provide the perfect point of entry to the natural world. They’re ambassadors to places we would not necessarily adventure to and nature does not begin or end at national park boundaries. We can see some amazing birds outside our own windows. Even in modern times, birds keep us connected to nature in a way few other creatures have been able to do. Even if we live in the heart of a densely populated city, there always seems to be some bird species that are living right along beside us, constantly reminding us that we are still part of the natural world no matter how many concrete jungles we build. Peter Doherty, a Nobel Prize-winning immunologist and author of Their Fate Is Our Fate: How Birds Foretell Threats to Our Health and Our World, views birds as prophets of a sort, as “sentinels, sampling the health of the air, seas, forests and grasslands we share with them.” Birds can teach us about the health of the planet. The birds in Doherty’s book serve as a valuable reminder that the natural world doesn’t exist in isolation. Wings permit birds to be

the last wild intrusions on our lives, their physiology force us to remember that we’re connected to a much larger world.
Birds inspire us to be introspective about our own lives. Every bird, like every person, has their own unique beauty, strengths and weaknesses. Birds are smart enough to migrate and find better conditions when food becomes scarce in the winter and conditions get harsh. Birds fly in flocks because flocks help them elude predators. Things look different when viewed from up high. Birds soar and look for prey because it is easier to spot from up above. Birds are able to keep their balance in strong winds and can often stand for great lengths of time on one foot. Birds don’t care if people are watching. They just go about their business. Birds are not quitters. Even when they are chased away, they will often return over and over again to the same spot to try and get what they want. Nature is wise and birds are just one example of how much nature has to teach us about life.
It would please Mike very much if you had a photo, a painting, a mosaic, a statue or a carving of a bird of Whidbey Island that you would be willing to loan to Mike’s collection for this year.

Allan Swan By Barb Spence
I have known Allan Swan for several years as a student in the Yoga class that is taught at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. To my great surprise and delight, I have learned that there are many facets to this jewel of a man who contributes a great deal of his time to the Whidbey Island community. Allan and his family moved to Whidbey Island in 1997 after retir-
These days Allan is quite active in both the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and the Whidbey Presbyterian Church. He served as the President of the Oak Harbor Senior Center Advisory Board for awhile and is now a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and has been delivering meals to shut-ins for over 13 years.
Allan’s favorite companion these days is his 8 year old Maltese/Minature Amerian Eskimo dog, Peiko. It is such a pleasure to introduce Allan as Volunteer of the Month. People like Allan are the glue that keeps entire communities together.
