FRESH LOOK How does Pat Shelley spend his summer vacations? For the last nine years he has spent his summers painting city buildings, including city hall, the windmill, public restrooms and 105 storage doors at the marina. This summer one of his projects was the senior center. After twenty-seven years we got a fresh look. No, those are not new doors that greet you. It’s four coats of stain and polish and new handles. A BIG THANK-YOU to Pat for his hard work and our fresh look.

We did have turkey. What we didn’t have was turkey leftovers, but we still think of it as the Year Without Turkey. It was the first year of the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Mom just got out of the hospital a few days earlier recovering from minor surgery, and being good daughters, we thought attending the Community Dinner would relieve mom of the pressure of fixing a big dinner, give her a little rest. If you knew my mom, you knew you couldn’t keep her out of the kitchen, hers or yours. For the past couple of years she would hint how it would be so nice if she could go to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving dinner and not worry about cooking a turkey or cleaning up. With four grown daughters you would think someone could cook dinner. Wrong. When it came to Thanksgiving Dinner, it was mom’s way or the highway. We were allowed to bring a side dish only because we made it just the way she taught us. (I always got to do the apple/banana salad. (The one-year I used Cool Whip instead of mayonnaise, well, let’s just say it was quite awhile before I was asked to bring it again.) Mom loved cooking for her family and Thanksgiving Dinner was her culinary highlight. When one of us offered to host the family for Thanksgiving, she was greatly offended. “What, you think I’m too old to cook a turkey? I can still cook circles around any of you.” One year as everyone arrived, she asked, “Can you smell the turkey?” It was getting to be afternoon and no one could smell the turkey. Funny. Mom always had the turkey on by 6 am and dinner was at 1 pm. Finally, my nephew Scott went out to check the roaster to see how much longer till dinner. He came back and announced, “Nana, the roaster isn’t turned on.” Dinner was later than usual and mom kept muttering all day, “Well I never….” It became a family tradition the next few years to ask as we arrived, “Is the turkey on?” Mom got her wish. Someone else fixed Thanksgiving Dinner. We went to the Community Dinner and had a great time. All mom had to do was come and enjoy it. No dishes, no cleaning the house, no setting the table, no leftovers… You know the scene from The Christmas Story when the Bumpass Hounds break in and steal the turkey? It wasn’t quite that bad back at mom’s house but the awful realization that there would be no turkey leftovers, no turkey sandwiches with cranberry, no turkey dressing casserole, no turkey salad and worst, no turkey and dumpling soup was devastating!!!!! We weren’t such good daughters after all. One of the brother-in-laws ran to the store for pumpkin pie and we found a can of cranberry sauce in the pantry. Still, no turkey leftovers. A very sad day indeed. Mom has been gone for several years. Sisters have moved away. We still like to go to the Community Harvest Dinner to see friends and join together in giving thanks for our many blessings. An important lesson was learned. Turkey leftovers are as important as the original Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. I get up at 6 am to put the turkey on (just like mom did), we go to the Community Dinner to visit with friends, and while everyone else is out doing their Black Friday shopping, we have a turkey dinner, complete with leftovers to last a few days. Nobody goes without his or her turkey and dumpling soup. Nobody.

November 2013
Medicare Fraud/Scams With the roll out of the new health care reform programs which began in October and Medicare’s open enrollment (October 15, 2013 – December 7, 2013), the scammers are back. This is an opportunity for con artists to prey on consumers. There have been many reports from local seniors, which are serious. The calls (mail and visits) are confusing and downright dangerous. Beware of bogus emails, phony website links, phone calls, and people who come to the door asking for your personal information who say it’s because of the new law. Some important tips to avoid scams for people with Medicare and for those without: Tips for people with Medicare • If you have Medicare, you do not need to purchase any coverage through our state’s insurance marketplace, called the Washington Healthcare Exchange. Your Medicare benefits satisfy the requirement to have health care coverage; you do not need to do anything. (It is actually illegal for someone who knows you have Medicare, to sell you a plan through the Exchange.) • You do not need a new Medicare card, Social Security card, or any other new identity card.
• You do not need to verify any of your current information. • No one from the government will contact you by phone or in person about the new health benefits. • When in doubt call the Insurance Consumer Hotline at 800-562-6900 8 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Tips for people who don’t have Medicare • Remember that there is no “Obamacare” card or new national health care card. No one will go to jail or be in trouble with the law if they don’t have this phony card (as there is no card). • You can’t get a special low monthly rate for signing up early, and your income will determine your pre-
mium and your subsidy or tax credit to reduce the premium when you get your coverage through the Washington Healthcare Exchange. • You do not have to pay for help or for information about the new law. Help will be available from agents, health care providers, and from the Exchange to assist people signing up for the new benefits. • Don’t give anyone cash for health care coverage, or to anyone who says they are from the government. • Don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and get a second opinion from someone you trust. • Don’t give out your personal information to anyone you don’t know, especially over the phone. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Scam artists want your information to commit identity theft, charge
your existing credit cards, debit your checking account, open new credit cards, checking, or savings accounts, write fraudulent checks, or take out loans in your name.” For the best information go to www. wahealthplanfinder.org for information on Washington’s insurance marketplace. Be sure you are on one of these official websites and not a bogus site. Do not use a search engine to find the site, as many fake websites can show up. Instead, type in the web address directly. If you would prefer to call: 800-562-3022. Nadine Joy is the Senior Information and Assistance Specialist for North Whidbey Island. Her office is in the Oak Harbor Senior Center. For assistance of this topic or matters concerning seniors, you can reach her at 360-675-0311 M-TH 9-4:30. Call Chasity Smith for Assistance on South Whidbey Island 360 321-1600 x27.
