We are excited to announce that the Oak Harbor Senior Center will offer a new fitness program, beginning in late fall. Enhance®Fitness is an evidence-based group exercise program developed by Senior Services of Seattle in partnership with the University of Washington and Group Health Cooperative. The program helps older adults at all levels of fitness become more active, energized, and empowered to sustain independent lives. What is an evidence-based program? Simply put, a program is judged to be evidencebased if it meets the following criteria: • Evaluation research shows that the program produces the expected positive results • The results can be attributed to the program itself, rather than to other extraneous factors or events • The evaluation is peer-reviewed by experts in the field • The program is “endorsed” by a federal agency or respected research organization and included in their list of effective programs Enhance®Fitness has been endorsed by the US HHS Administration on Aging and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Arthritis Program. What to Expect You can recognize an Enhance®Fitness class by the relaxed atmosphere and the laughter in the room. A full hour of fun, Enhance®Fitness focuses on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility — everything older adults need to maintain health and function as they age.
• A 20-minute strength training workout with soft ankle and wrist weights (0 up to 20 pounds) • A 10-minute stretching workout to keep the muscles flexible • Balance exercises throughout the class
• Lots of opportunities for participants to make new friends and acquaintances

Wednesday, October 12, 10am or Friday, October 21, 1pm If you are among the 15% of the U.S. population enrolled in Medicare, chances are you are seeing a lot of ads for Medicare Prescription Drug Plans and for Medicare Advantage Plans. The reason? It’s the time of year for Medicare Open Enrollment, which runs October 15th to December 7th. Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Part D or Prescription Drug Plans are plans offered by private insurance companies under contract with Medicare. There are many different plans from which to choose, each can cover different medications. Plans typically have premiums, deductibles, co-pays, and preferred pharmacies. All of these variables can mean a huge difference in your out-of-pocket costs. In addition, plans can and do change every year. So the best plan for you in 2017 may be different from the one you are in this year. The decision you make during open enrollment will dictate your 2017 coverage. For people on Medicare who take prescription drugs, this is important. Many could save hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, by simply doing a little research to identify plans that best meet their needs. Worse yet, someone who fails to enroll in a Part D Plan can face late enrollment penalties down the road. It’s important to know the facts – preferably not from someone who is trying to sell you their product. Please join us for one of two workshops being offered in October at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Bring a complete list of your medications if you would like help in identifying the best plan for you at the lowest cost.

ARE YOU CARING FOR A LOVED ONE?
15 million people in our country provide care for a loved one or a close friend. Sixty percent of those caregivers are working and over the age of 50. Chances are very good you might become one of those who give care to another, but also need care yourself. A support group of like-minded individuals can be invaluable.
When loved ones are in the role of providing care for family members, they are rarely prepared for the stress that can result. You may become overwhelmed and feel underappreciated, demands pile up, and you dwell in self-pity and frustration. Feelings of guilt, depression and anxieties are your constant companions… And that’s on a good day. Hopelessness and helplessness can soon follow. Caregivers pour their energy, heart and soul into the care they are providing, but often times they feel no satisfaction but they do feel empty, and devoid of motivation.
