HOW TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR

You’ve now reached a mature, well adjusted, semiretired age and your Doctor looks like he’s about fourteen. You both speak English, but he wouldn’t know what you meant if you said, our medicine cabinet looks like “Fibber McGee and Molly’s closet”. So how do the two of you have a practical conversation about your health needs? How do you get past the phone receptionist that answers “Can you Hold Please”, of course you can’t hold………….you didn’t call to hold………you called to speak to person… ……..a real person, not that infernal machine that keeps repeating “listen carefully to the following options as our menu selection has recently changed”. Drat’s……. welcome to the new generation. Join Sande Mulkey, of Regency on Whidbey, on Monday, October 14 at 1 pm at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, as she shares information and tips on talking with your doctor, how to choose a doctor and other questions and concerns about your care. The best time to ask those questions is when you’re relatively healthy. RSVP by calling 279-4580.

Are You A Veteran Or Surviving Spouse? Congress has directed the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs to establish a program for eligible veterans and their surviving spouse to help pay for Assisted Living, Nursing Home Care, and Home Health Care. Mahala MurphyMartin, an associate of the nonprofit organization, Veteran Support Center/NASV, will be at the Oak Harbor Senior Center on Monday, October 28 at 1:00 pm to present this little known VA Aid and Attendance Benefit. She will discuss the rules, regulations, and criteria required to attain the Aid and Attendance Benefit. The Aid and Attendance pension is a benefit for Veterans and /or surviving spouses who are at least 65 years of age to

help assist with the cost of Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, and Home Health. It is a non-service related disability benefit, meaning the disability does not have to be a result of service. It is available for those veterans and/or surviving spouse if the veteran served at least 1 day during wartime (did not have to be in combat), and who qualify. Tracie L. Wall, an elder law attorney, will present information on estate planning and how to protect assets with estate planning. Estate planning eliminates uncertainties over the administration of a probate and maximizes the value of the estate by reducing taxes and other expenses. It makes wishes clear and avoids family disputes. She’ll discuss

last wills and testaments, trusts, and medical directives. She can answer general practice questions. With proper planning your life savings can be protected and you can obtain the Medicaid/Nursing Home Benefits desired. RSVP by calling 279-4583.

DISABLED VETERANS SWIM FREE

The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

STICK A NEEDLE IN MY EYE I do not like needles. Getting my blood drawn is torture, unless you can do a good stick. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you are not getting near me. I am not a pincushion to practice on. As a child, the worst day at school was ‘shot day’. Even though I had a last name that would put me in the front of the line, that wasn’t good enough. My mother told my teacher I pass out when I get a shot so I was always the first or second in line. Guess they thought it would be too traumatic for me to watch everyone get shots first. I use to wish my last name started with a ‘Z’, but I would probably still get put first in line. At least I didn’t scream and throw a fit like some kids. I just went white and woke up looking at the ceiling. The Terrors of the Neighborhood – Ray and Roy, identical twins, intensified my fear. They were rascals. If towels hanging from the clothesline were dirty, Ray and Roy must have been playing in the creek and used the towels to dry off. If sheets were missing, you could find them as part of a tent. One summer all of us kids were in the tent telling ghost stories. After a few goodies like ‘It Floats’ and ‘The Haunted House’, Ray and Roy told theirs – ‘Cross My Heart, Hope To Die, Stick A Needle In My Eye’. A story about what would happen if you ever broke your promise to Ray and Roy and snitched on them. Ray and Roy’s grandpa had eye surgery in the war. They went into great detail and explained how the doctors stick a needle (guess where) and you have to lie very, very, very still or you will go blind – FOREVER! Now they knew exactly how to get even with anyone who snitched. Tie them down, stick the needle in the eye and with all the squirming, pain, yelling and blood (did I mention they were 10 years old?) their enemies would be blind FOREVER. My mom always said I had too big of an imagination. She was certainly

right about this one. I got so scared of what Ray and Roy would do if I ever snitched, the needle, the pain, the blindness…..I passed out. My sisters went running to get mom and Ray and Roy went running in the other direction. (A few months earlier when they said the ‘F’ word to my little sister Myrna, my dad threatened to break their dam legs if they ever came into our yard again.) After that, we were never allowed to say ‘stick a needle’ in anything. We were suppose to say ‘Cross my heart, hope to die, look the Devil in the eye’. Why do I share this? Some fond childhood memory? Oh no. I just want people to understand why at the age of sixty, I kept putting off cataract surgery. I never did outgrow my imagination when it comes to the eyes. It got to the point where I finally had to see my ophthalmologist. Yep, cataract surgery, both eyes. I wanted to ask if he ever knew a set of twins called Ray and Roy. When I asked people about their cataract surgery, most people couldn’t even remember it. Piece of cake. Yeah, right. I bet my mom had talked to them. My good friend Lora (RN), assured me I would do fine. She even gave me socks to wear during surgery. “I can’t be there to hold your hand, but think of me holding your foot.” On the day of the first surgery, I said a little prayer. I knew I would survive. No one I knew had died of cataract surgery or gone blind FOREVER. Wow, the surgery was a pleasant surprise, no needle in the eye, no head or body bands strapping me to the operating table. Just one little poke for the IV (and she was good.) What was I so afraid of? Ray and Roy. Now when I see you in the distance and smile, it’s because I can really see you. I don’t have to guess who you are.

Wii Bowling

Love sports? You don’t need a spot on the world’s sports stage, you only need a spot on your living room floor. With Nintendo Wii, the interactive video-game system, you can exercise regularly, doing everything from yoga to boxing. While video games are traditionally considered an accomplice to promoting a couch-potato lifestyle, new types of games and new studies Join Bob, Les, John and Jim for Wii Bowling. suggest they may offer some healthy benefits. Wii promotes physical activity and games for everyone from ages 5 to 95 to enjoy. Seniors typically aren’t thought of as “gamers.” Amber McCollom, a senior manager in Nintendo USA’s Entertainment & Trend Marketing, said the people on the upper end of that range are joining in. About 26 percent of video game players are 55 or older,” Prior to Wii, the number of video game-playing seniors was about zero. More of the 60-plus crowd is having fun with it. It’s perfect for older people because the Wii can improve mobility, reflexes and hand-eye coordination and stretch out muscles. It’s a low-impact way to get you off the couch. More interactive, more active. It’s better than people just sitting on the couch and moving their thumbs. With Wii Bowling, players stand in front of the television holding controls that sense when and how they move. When bowling, players mimic real bowling techniques. The system reacts to their movements by rolling the ball on the screen according to what the players do. Join Bob, Les, John, Jim and others for Wii Bowling at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. Wii Bowling is held Mondays, most Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 am. No shoe rentals, heavy bowling balls to carry just a lot of fun and laughs. Wii Bowling is a great way to stay in shape. Then go challenge the grandkids. Great family activity.
