The Shortest Distance BY Roxann Dunn-Terry “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES It all started one summer, when the kids were little. Beth won a goldfish at the county fair and Danny wanted one too. I thought it would be nice to let them each have a goldfish in their bedroom. Danny’s fish bowl soon became a home for some baby catfish he found in a pond at a local park and several goldfish he bought at the dime store. Danny’s smaller goldfish soon became bait for the larger catfish. He convinced Mr. Volunteer (dad) that he wanted a ‘science corner’ on his dresser. Like a good dad, they went and got a small aquarium for Tinker, Danny’s snapping turtle he had found. Beth’s little Bubbles died but daddy replaced it during naptime so she
never knew that Bubbles One was really Bubbles Two until later. Life was good……..until. One morning Danny decided to change the catfish water all by himself. Did a pretty good job until he turned on the water, filled the bowl, and dropped the catfish in. Suddenly the catfish were bottoms up. Danny was upset; dad investigated the noise and broke the sad news, that the catfish had just been cooked. Hot water from the tap and little fish don’t mix. Beth woke up and went to feed Bubbles Two. Oh no, Bubbles was bottom up. Now the noise level in the apartment was at an all time high. Burials at sea complete with prayer, song and testimonials of how

special those little lives had been, completed by eight o’clock am. During breakfast and sniffles, it was decided that Danny and dad would go back to the pond and Beth and mom would go to the dime store. Danny brought home tadpoles and Beth brought home Tarter Sauce and Fish Fry. Life was good………until.
ered that Guppy was a nibbler. Cleo did not have a burial at sea; she was bagged, taken back to the pet store for the autopsy-cannibalism and promptly buried next to her partner in life. Complete with an American flag. Guppy was in time out for bad behavior. We don’t eat our little friends.
One day after school, Danny came home and discovered several of his tadpoles missing. He accused me of taking them. While explaining my whereabouts during the supposed kidnapping, Mr. Volunteer arrived home from work. We all went to the bedroom to investigate, just in time to witness the culprit, Tinker, with the last tadpole going down his throat. A discussion about the Food Chain followed. Life was good … until Tarter Sauce and Fish Fry’s burials at sea……..
The summer event – Island Pet Store’s Annual Sidewalk Sale came. After consulting desktopgoldfish. com, Beth and the Princess were ready for Guppy’s new bowl mate. I should never, ever, have let them go un-supervised. What was I thinking; they would come home with a bigger desk top bowl and new fish??????? Wrong. First warning was the excited voice of the Princess, on the phone, telling me all about how Guppy was going to be sooooooo happy. Second warning, that almost sent me to my grave next to Goldie and Cleo, was coming home to the Shed’s Aquarium. ‘Mom, it was on sale!’ ‘Nana, we can have LOTS of friends for Guppy!’ There sitting in the Moose Room was a major piece of furniture that would not fit in the Princess’s little bedroom. (Unless we moved her out.) Two hours later I was finally able to speak. Beth offered to take it back. Princess was crying and Mr. Volunteer kept muttering, ‘Where are we suppose to put it?’
Did I learn anything? Apparently not. This summer I thought it would be nice for the Princess to have a little goldfish, in a little bowl, in her little room…….. Beth felt one little fish would get too lonely so a bigger bowl was bought and Goldie and Cleo came to live with the Princess. Life was good… until Goldie developed a swim bladder infection. Goldie never had a burial at sea two weeks later. No, Goldie was buried in the flower garden, complete with a funeral procession, wailing, gnashing of teeth and a tombstone drawn with her picture inscribed with I love you Goldie. After a respectful period of mourning (five minutes) it was off to the pet store so Cleo wouldn’t be lonely. Guppy came to live with us. Life was good….. until it was discov-
Suffice it to say, we now have a lovely aquarium in our entryway for everyone to enjoy, (suppose to lower blood pressure). The Princesses’ are bonding nicely. Bubbles III, Gilly, Sinbad and Mulan are playing nicely with Guppy. Life is good………. until…….

Contnued from Page 3 theme is Preventing Falls – One Step at a Time, Every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an Emergency Department for a fall-related injury. Nationally, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for those aged 65 and over. Moreover, the chances of falling and being seriously injured in a fall increase with age. Michele Renninger and Robert May, of Whidbey General Hospital, will present a SAIL class in October which promotes fall prevention and overall health of adults. Nadine Joy, Senior Information and Assistance Specialist located at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, shares safety tips for your home. “Slipping and Sliding….We’ve all done it…taken that step out of the tub or
shower and wooooosh! If you just take a few steps, you can live much more safely and independently in your home.” Floors: Remove or cover slick flooring with floors that provide a gripping texture such as textured vinyl sheets or tiles. Remove area rugs that could be a hazard for tripping. In the shower/bath: Bars are in order. Equip showers and surrounding walls with sturdy grab bars that are anchored to wall studs to support an Adult’s full weight. Consider installing non-skid tape or secure bath mats on the floor of the shower or bathtub. Consider a bath seat or a hand-held shower. (they even make waterproof medical alert buttons to keep in your shower) Lighting: Sparkly clean bathrooms offer all kinds of lighting hurdles to eyes challenged by glare and shadows. Try using some task lighting on the counter or under the cabinets, which may help you see better for grooming and eliminate some of the glare. If you have a window in your bathroom try replacing curtains or shades with frosted vinyl. You will get nice natural light which is easy on the eyes and does not create, or add to the glare. Seating: There are many choices available to raise-up your seat! Home improvement stores and mail order catalogs are great places to find risers for your toilet. Using a higher seat enables you to get on and off easier with little chance of a bad fall. Water: Make sure your water heater is no hotter than 120 degrees to reduce risk of scalding. Most of these changes cost little and truly reduce the risk of falling. It is really about staying safe, and most of all staying in your home as long as you like. A little change here or there in that one little room can help ensure it. Nadine Joy can be reached at the Oak Harbor Senior Center by calling (360) 675-0311. Her hours are Monday – Thursday, 9:00am – 4:30pm.
