National Senior Center Month

Experts At Living Well The theme for National Senior Center Month September 2013 is Senior Centers: Experts at Living Well. The Oak Harbor Senior Center has resources and tools to empower older adults to make choices that will enhance their lives and help them become Experts at Living Well. Senior centers, offer a variety of valuable programs, activities, and services for health and fitness, lifelong learning opportunities, travel, recreation and encourage involvement in the center and the community. Whether it’s trying Tai Chi, attending a watercolor class, or Wii bowling, these activities add richness to the lives of older adults in our community. This September, and every month, take advantage of the various programs, events and services offered at the Oak Harbor Senior Center that will enable you to Live Well.

Cool Down Party!

WOW! (Walk On Whidbey!) It’s been a great summer to Step It Up! The twelve-week summer walking program ends with a Cool Down Party on Monday, September 16 at 1:00 pm. join us for Madagascar’s “I Like To Move It!” We will have door prizes and refreshments. For twelve weeks people have been keeping track of their daily steps and reporting in weekly. There were a few glitches with pedometers. Some were lost. Some were accidently dropped in the toilet. A bat-

tery or two didn’t work. More were ordered. Everybody did a great job increasing his or her steps and getting America Moving here at the Oak Harbor Senior Center. A BIG Thank-you to Wal-Mart & North End Fitness, for sponsorship. Big Thankyou’s to Barb Spence and Tom Piper as Team Leaders.

Join us in celebrating the Oak Harbor Senior Center’s 27th Anniversary and Volunteers on Tuesday, September 17 from 2:00-4:00 pm at Regency On Whidbey. Members & Volunteers, of the Oak Harbor Senior Center, are invited to join us for a Dessert & Fruit Buffet, Entertainment, Door Prizes and fun as we honor 27 Years of Service to our community. We are encouraging car-pooling. You may park at the Center and ride our bus. Sign up at the Front Desk if you would like a ride. Bus will REGENCY leave the center at 1:45 pm. Harvest Moon Dance / Hunger Action Month Celebrate National Senior Center Month with Harbor Tower Village and join us for an “Ol’ Time Country Gathering” at Harbor Tower Village on Friday, September 20 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm at the Harvest Moon Dance. Grab your boots, hats and

favorite pair of jeans. No dance skill or experience is necessary to have a foot-stompin’ good time. DJ’s Unlimited, with Charlie Moore, will provide the boot scootin’ music. Cool your boots with delicious refreshments provided by Annie Webb

AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS

The Trade Winds Insurance will sponsor an AARP Driver Safety Class at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, Saturday September 28 from 9 am – 4 pm. They will provide coffee, donuts and water. Instructor is Karen Bishop. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Bring a sack lunch. Class is limited to 22 students. RSVP by calling the Oak Harbor Senior Center at 2794580.

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT PRESENTATION

The Oak Harbor Senior Center in partnership with the SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) program invites you to a free community presentation on the 2013 Medicare Open Enrollment Period on September 30, at 1:00 pm. Topics include changes to the 2014 Medicare Part D benefits, Extra Help program for the Part D benefits, how to choose a Prescription Drug Plan and a Medicare Advantage plan, and what to watch out for. Representatives from the SHIBA program will be presenting at this workshop. SHIBA is a free, unbiased service of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner. LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE with CHRONIC CONDITIONS

“Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions” is a six-week class for those who want to take charge of the life they are living and live with a higher quality of life! The program was developed by Stanford University Education Department so that people could learn to self manage some of the obstacles that can get in the way of living well. The class will review nutrition, symptoms, relief, and stress management including meditation, exercise for fun & fitness, and planning for the future. There will be those who are experiencing some of the same problems who are supportive and understanding. The class includes a comprehensive book and CD that accommodate the lessons learned in class. It’s a fun way to learn new lifestyles that will enhance your life. Class will be held Thursdays, Oct 3 – Nov. 7 and cost $12.00. RSVP by calling 2794580.
