Welcome
As your 37th Annual SICBA Home and Garden show committee, we would like to welcome you! We hope that you will find the things you need to get started on your spring projects. We hope to see you on Friday March 24, 2017 when the show kicks off with more than 100 exhibitors sharing what’s new and returning in products for all your home or garden needs. If there is a home improvement or garden project on your list we’re sure you’ll be able to find the information you need from our professionals. On Friday night from 5-7pm, we will have the band, Never Kry, playing and encourage you to make a night of it by visiting the food truck vendors for dinner while at the show. As you wander the exhibitor buildings, rest assured the companies you see are registered, licensed as required and bonded. Make sure you stop by the SICBA booth at the front of the C building to pick up a referral directory for member Contractors in both Skagit and Island Counties and learn more about who SICBA is and what we do. This year, venture in to the Azusa Farm Garden Center in the G Building. Ask questions and get advice from the Master Gardeners and purchase plants & flowers from local vendors. We welcome Ciscoe Morris back to the show on Sunday and new comer, retired Navy Captain and NASA Astronaut, Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, as well as many seminar presenters speaking on subjects relevant for today’s homeowners. All speakers and seminars will be held in the E&E Lumber and Homecenter – A Building for your comfort and convenience. Do you and your family love Playhouse Lane? We’ve changed it up this year! The playhouses will be placed around the fairgrounds for you and your family to explore and enjoy. Make sure you receive your Playhouse Passport (sponsored by Dwayne Lane’s Auto Center) and get your stamp while visiting each one, then vote on your favorite playhouse. The partnership with builders and charities makes this an exciting event for the entire family. Another new adventure this year is our Kids’ Zone area. With the help of Skagit YMCA, kids will be able to paint rocks and hide them around the fairgrounds OR take them home to hide. We will also be holding the first Lego® Build Challenge for adults and kids! Sign up in advance to participate for a chance to win the grand prize! Bring the family and spend the day with us enjoying food, fun, exhibits and entertainment at the 37th Annual SICBA Home and Garden Show.

TESTIMONIALS “Very competent crew. I have used their service for a multitude of varied tasks and have been extremely happy with the results. And I’m picky, just ask my wife.” Jack H., Oak Harbor “We have been using John Hanselman's Tree Service and Lawn Maintenance for about six years. He and his crews have done excellent work in both areas: removing and trimming trees and tall hedges as well as mowing, edging and maintaining our lawn. John is always helpful, cooperative and pleasant. We are happy to recommend him very highly.” Peggy and Patrick Tyson “John and his crew have worked with our Homeowners Association for over 10 years. We have walked through and assessed our (5+ acre) woods, three times. Trees have been pruned where required or removed due to infection. His approach to repair over removal is appreciated. Thanks John for keeping our community, Evergreen!” Jeff S

Environmental Benefits of Using Wood in Construction by: Kym Kelly,
Cedar Country Lumber
GO GREEN……..USE WOOD “One of the best ways to address climate change is to use more wood, not less. Every wood substitute – including steel, plastic and cement – requires far more energy to produce than lumber.” – Dr. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace • Wood is the only 100% renewable resource in the manufacturing of building materials.
• Wood building materials are 400 times better at insulating than steel and 15 times better than concrete.
• Wood is the only naturally recyclable and biodegradable building material.
• Wood products produce less solid waste – both in manufacturing of the products and at construction sites. There is virtually no waste in manufacturing wood products.
• Wood has the lowest environmental impact compared to other building products such as steel, concrete, tile, vinyl siding, fiber cement siding, and stucco.
• Wood products generate less greenhouse gases. Wood reduces carbon emissions while concrete and steel increase carbon emissions.
• Wood products require less embodied energy. This is energy used in the extraction, production and transportation of the resource.
• Wood products have the lowest ecological resource use index. This means that while trees are harvested the effects are only short-term as reforestation follows. Other products have long-term effects as their resources are non-renewable i.e. petroleum for plastic and ore used in steel and aluminum siding. Once these non-renewable resources are gone they cannot be replaced. The trees themselves are produced naturally through solar energy.
• Wood products require little to no fossil fuels (a nonrenewable resource) to produce. • Wood products produce less air pollution. • Wood products produce less water pollution.
• Wood can be re-used and recycled with very little additional energy. Concrete cannot be re-used in the same form but can be down cycled to aggregate with a lot of additional energy expended.
• Wood products generate less greenhouse gases. • Wood reduces carbon emissions while concrete and steel increase carbon emissions.
• No other building product is more environmental than wood as demonstrated in “ATHENA’s life cycle assessment” research and study. From the growing of the tree to the disposal of the wood products, wood has a minimal environmental footprint. Non-renewable products such as steel, aluminum and concrete use up to 250% more fossil fuel energy from the production to the disposal vs. wood.
• Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is considered a contributor to Global Warming – young and mature trees reduce CO2 from the atmosphere. • Wood products are better insulators in homes and buildings which reduces the energy consumption in both heating and cooling making it the most energy-efficient material.

2017 SICBA Home and Garden Show
Show Your Home Some
By Wayne Crider,
Executive Officer, Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association
Your home puts up with a lot. It withstands inclement weather, endures the occasional stained carpet, clogged drain or broken window, and it even tolerates the smell of your burnt popcorn. So it deserves a little love once in a while, and there’s no better time to show it than as Spring approaches. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on new appliances or significant renovations to show your home that you care. There are many simple ways to show your home some love. Here are a few suggestions.
Shed Some of that Extra Weight Do you really need to hold on to all of those 1980s leisure suits you’d hoped would come back in style? You don’t have to wait for spring to roll around to get rid of the junk that may be piling up in your coat closets, basement or garage. Lighten the load throughout your home and it will seem bigger and significantly cleaner. Plus, spring cleaning won’t be nearly as intimidating when that time comes.
Get Some Sun Winter doesn’t have to be dreary. Sure, the trees may be bare, but that just means less foliage is blocking the sun. Do your home and yourself a favor and let the sunlight in. Pull back (or take down) the drapes, wash the windows, and maybe even swap out dark lampshades for brighter ones to make the inside of your home cheerier. 2017 SICBA Home and Garden Show
8
Scrub it Down Your appliances work hard for you every day so it’s time to give them a thorough cleaning, especially if you haven’t done so recently. Refrigerators especially need a little extra attention on a regular basis. Start by taking everything out, then, be selective about what you put back. Also, check to see if any of your appliances might still be under warranty with a service plan to cover any maintenance that will keep them running smoothly.
Spruce it Up One of the most economical updates you can give your home is paint. Whether it’s a bold new color, or just a fresh coat, painting a room or even just an accent wall can breathe new life into any space. Winter months can sometimes limit interior painting opportunities if it’s consistently too cold outside to open windows for ventilation. Plan ahead by checking the weather reports to find a day that might work.
Buy a Bouquet If you’re not doing any gardening on the outside of your home during this time of year, bring some flowers inside. A blooming bouquet instantly warms up a room during cold winter months. Check out the flower section of your local florist to find festive flowers at reasonable prices. 2017 SICBA Home and Garden Show
Purposeful Gardens By Everett Chu, Azusa Farms
Have you ever thought about grouping your garden areas, just like inside your home, into many rooms, each serves a particular purpose? Maybe each even has its own virtual floor, walls, and ceiling? That’s what landscapedesign experts would recommend and how some of the famous gardens around the world are created. To set a solid foundation for purposeful gardens, you will need to make them functional, inviting, and sustainable. The functional aspect of a garden must be considered first, just like the old saying of “Form follows function. Simply speaking, the gardens must support the intended function as influenced by the lifestyle preference. The focus includes suitable access points, effective circulation paths, and appropriate space relative to the activities. Other functional issues, such as drainage, lighting, and safety or security measures, may also come into play. 2017 SICBA Home and Garden Show
Making the gardens inviting is more than making them pretty. A successful landscape offers rewarding engagement through sensory experience (gardens for five senses). It evokes positive emotion and invites visitors to interact with the surroundings, rather than simply moving through it. When the visitors are able to form a closer bond with nature and feel invigorated from it, the experience may

even become therapeutic. To accomplish this, key landscape-design principles must be judiciously applied to harness all garden elements when putting the gardens together. To make the gardens sustainable, it requires careful planning in design, construction, as well as maintenance. Factors contribute to sustainability include soils, vegetation, materials selections, A purposeful sanctuary garden at the Kubota Garden in Seattle Photo by Everett Chu (2013)

hydrology, and human health and wellbeing. In addition to cost and effort, the fourth dimension (time scale) should enter in the equation to ensure long-term success. To apply the purposeful concept, twelve outdoor rooms are introduced herein as broad-brush examples: entryway, edible, fragrance, drought tolerant, shade loving, moisture loving, wildlife habitat, deer resistant, privacy screen, sanctuary, seacoast, and small space. Still, some of these rooms may be combined to serve dual purposes. This purposeful approach is not the same as choosing among garden styles (such as modern, Japanese, cottage, etc.), although the preferred style should still play a role in the actual design. An entryway garden makes a statement about the occupants of the home. It may be part of the front-yard landscape that contributes to the “curb appeal.” A common approach is to make this garden bold, with interesting textures and vibrant color, but at the same time being more refined and less maintenance. An edible garden could be the most exciting part of the landscape because, from our hunter-gather instinct, few things bring more exhilaration than harvesting food to quash the hunger. This garden is usually sited in a sunny, warm spot to increase the yield, but it does not have to be confined in a backyard corner. A fragrance garden evokes a strong sensory response. It is ideally sited near the gathering places, such as a patio or a deck, taking advantage of the prevailing wind, which usually comes from the west. A drought-tolerant garden is typically oriented toward the southwest corner of the yard. It can have a Mediterranean style with Mediterranean plants, because of similar climate. A shade-loving garden may be on the opposite end from the drought-tolerant garden. Depending on the source of the shade (building or tree canopy), the composition may differ. A moisture-loving garden takes advantage of low-lying area or the bottom of a hill with seeping water most of the year. Such wet spots may not need SICBAHomeShow.com

to be “corrected.” Instead, a broader range of suitable planting can increase biodiversity and wildlife activities. A wildlife-habitat garden can be a transition between natural wooded areas in the background and the built landscape closer to the house. It can be designed to attract songbirds, hummingbirds, and other wildlife such as pollinators, contributing to a robust ecosystem. A deer-resistant garden would keep the landscape intact in areas with high deer traffic. Although no plants are totally safe from deer browsing, careful selections from a palette of more-resistant plants could keep the damage to a minimum. A privacy screen would reduce direct line-of-sight from the street or the neighboring properties. It applies the “enclosure” principle to provide a sense of security and comfort, but it does not have to be a solid block of monoculture plants. A sanctuary garden can be located in a quiet corner of the backyard, away from the noise and clutter, and offer relaxation and peaceful escape from
11
the stressful world. It may come with an enclosure, under a tall-tree canopy or a garden structure, to provide the sense of shelter. A small-space garden may require proportionally-smaller (dwarf) plants and may include a form of container garden. A fairy garden of certain scale may offer interesting results. A seacoast garden requires plants and amenities that tolerate salt sprays and soils with high salinity. Decoration with driftwood blends the garden with its surrounds. For non-beachfront homes, a “dry stream bed” may be used to offer similar soothing effect and help alleviate low-level surface-water runoff issues. When a water feature (such as a fountain or waterfall) is added, it further enhances the sensory experience. In summary, grouping your outdoor rooms into purposeful gardens can bring many benefits to your landscape, and it can make your gardening experience more enjoyable and successful. Visit the Azusa Farm Garden Center at the SICBA Home & Garden Show to purchase plants and learn more about a purposeful garden! 2017 SICBA Home and Garden Show

ADRIAN SANTANGELLO Data Security: What Does That Really Mean
JAHR HUBER
Why Quilters ARE Quilters
Adrian Santangelo, Founder of Interpreting Technology, has been in the information technology field his entire adult life. Adrian has almost two decades of computer forensic experience which started with deep roots in information and network security. In February 2012, he was sworn in as a Skagit County Sheriff’s Deputy, commissioned for computer crime and forensics, focusing on the northwest region of Washington State, and continued to be a professional forensics consultant to the public and private sector. He is well known locally for his network security and computer repair talents. Currently Adrian holds certifications as: MCP, MNE, A+, Security+, Network+, MCSE, CEH, CISSP, CFCE, CCE, and CHFI. Adrian and his fellow team of experts work with a wide variety of clients ranging from home users to public and private sector, including small family operations to municipalities, financial institutions, manufacturing facilities, and international corporations. They respect that each client’s needs, industry and budget vary and ensure their needs are met in the most economical way, without hindering safety and security. DATA SECURITY - What does that really mean? Many terms regularly flood current media outlets: Security breach, ransomware, exploit, botnet, PCI DSS compliancy, HIPPA compliancy, IRS compliancy, corporate espionage, malware, spyware, adware, viruses, trojan, keylogger, Rogue website… In fact, there are so many terms that we cannot possibly list them all here. What do these terms mean to you and to your business? How can you navigate the ever changing landscape of computers and security? Join Adrian Santangelo, founder of Interpreting Technology, on Friday, March 24, 2017 from 1:00pm-1:30pm to learn about the key data security issues businesses can face today. Learn what to watch for, how to help prevent malicious individuals from stealing important company and customer data, and learn how to ensure you are meeting compliancy requirements. SUNDAY SEMINARS MARTHA ROSE
CISCOE MORRIS
Radically Reduce Your Utility Bills; The Anatomy of City Cabins™
Must Have Spring Plants
Owner, Martha Rose Construction LLC Martha Rose, known by many as the ‘Queen of Green,‘ is a national leader in the Green Building Movement. Her interest in energy efficiency and sustainable building practices goes all the way back to the 1970‘s and currently is her main focus. Today Martha is striving toward building Zero-Energy spec-homes. Martha started working in the construction industry in 1972 as a laborer and carpenter after realizing she liked working with her hands better than being in an office. Ten years of “nail-pounding“ brought her to several areas of the country on both coasts. The work ranged from production framing to finish carpentry work and from residential foundations to the West Seattle Bridge. While the work was hard, the training was an invaluable foundation. In 1982, Martha went to work for the City of Seattle as a building inspector, where she spent 4 years monitoring all of the commercial and residential projects in her district. During this time, she was taught about related construction topics such as shoreline erosion control, slide area identification and prevention, and techniques to keep water out of buildings. By being in the unique position of looking at both good and bad building styles and techniques, she was able to gain a broad working knowledge of good construction practices. For the next 10 years, Martha worked as a free-lance project manager for other developers. The types of projects she supervised were large and small residential, commercial, and institutional. This period of time added new growth in topics related to the development process. The energy crisis of the 1970‘s sparked her interest in conservation and alternative energy that became intertwined with her career in construction. The necessary learning that goes along with this topic is deep and on-going. Today, Martha is an educator herself, pushing the building industry towards zero-energy-use homes.

8 Considerations of a Hot Tub Purchase
By Northwest Hot Spring Spas
A hot tub is more than a home improvement product — it’s a self-improvement product. A soothing retreat that’s part of your home, an intimate oasis that you share with family and friends. A hot tub serves as a tangible investment in your mental and physical health, as well as your overall happiness. A place where you can unwind and truly feel your very best. Shopping or browsing for a hot tub should be fun. But before you purchase the first hot tub you find, take a moment to find out what you should consider before you even start your search and learn practical tips that will help you find your perfect hot tub.
4. 4 Operating Costs. When you’re searching for a hot tub, look for energy-efficient features like; high-density insulation throughout the entire spa, a high-density spa cover that seals completely and tapers for rain, a silent and energy-efficient water circulation pump, jets and controls designed for ease of use for years to come, and heaters that maximize efficiency and are resilient to corrosion. 5. 5 Test Soaking. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t purchase a car without taking it for a test drive, so don’t buy a hot tub without test soaking in it first. Many certified dealers will let you test soak in different models in their store.
1. Researching. As you begin to shop for your hot tub, knowing the correct questions to ask is vital. Common questions may include: • How do you get the hot tub from your driveway to the final site? • Do you need hydrotherapy to certain parts of your body? • How will you maintain your hot tub? • What’s the best size/# of seats for your family? • What are the electrical needs? • What is your monthly cost to maintain? Find a good dealer to help you answer these questions and get the perfect hot tub for you.
6. 6 Site Consultation. There are a lot of considerations when installing your first hot tub. Many dealerships provide free site visits to help answer all your questions about delivery access, placement, electrical, site prep, etc. 7. 7 Installation. Hot tubs are big, heavy and awkward to move. Unless you’re a trained professional, you probably want to avoid installing your new hot tub yourself. 8. 8 After the Sale. Choosing the right dealership is just as important as choosing the right hot tub model. A good hot tub can last you more than 20 years, so find a good dealership that will continue to serve you many years after the sale. Try to find a dealership that specializes in hot tubs and hot tub service to help provide the absolute best hot tub ownership experience.
2. Water Care. Everyone has different needs and there may be options that are better than traditional chlorine/bromine systems, like ozone systems, and salt water sanitation systems. 3. The Right Amount of Jets. Hot tubs have a plethora of jet options, all targeted to certain muscle groups to help you emerge from your hot tub feeling your best, but remember with hydrotherapy, it is quality over quantity.
