Welcome Welcome to the 38th Annual SICBA Home & Garden Show! We hope that you will find the things you need to get started on your home & garden projects! The show kicks off Friday, March 23rd at noon with more than 120 exhibitors. If there is a home improvement or garden project on your list, we are sure you’ll be able to find the information you need from our professionals. As you wander the exhibitor buildings, rest assured the companies you see are registered, licensed as required and bonded. Make sure you stop by the SICBA booth at the front of the C Building to pick up a referral directory for contractors in both Skagit and Island counties and learn more about who SICBA is and what we do. We welcome Ciscoe Morris back to the show on Sunday at noon; we also have seminars all three days with presenters speaking on subjects relevant for today’s homeowners. All speakers and seminars will be held in the B Building this year. Be sure to explore the Pavilion to view the five Playhouses for Charity. Make sure you receive your Dwayne Lane’s Auto Family Playhouse Passport and get your stamp while visiting each one, then vote on your favorite playhouse. Winners will be drawn on Sunday at 2pm. The partnership between builders and charities makes this an exciting event for the entire family.

EFFICIENCY IN THE HOME, SAVINGS IN THE BILL by Jake Bassett, Communications & Advertising | DeWaard & Bode

Becoming an Energy Star® partner is voluntary for product manufacturers, but the popularity of the program with retailers and consumers alike, has virtually made it mandatory for appliance manufacturers. The industry has been steadily transitioning to the use of materials that lessen the environmental footprint of home appliances both in the use and at the end of life. This includes the more environmentally friendly refrigerants and recyclable materials in both appliances and appliance packaging. The combination of innovation in efficiency and more sustainable practices have contributed to setting a standard in home appliance design that values the impact on the lives of everyday consumers and the life of our environment. DeWaard & Bode proudly participates and expands on rebatedriven programs that encourage consumers to consider energy efficient appliances for their home. DeWaard & Bode continues its commitment to sustainable operations and practices including an established recycling program, the reconditioning and re-use of equipment/parts, and the use of energy efficient light bulbs and materials within their buildings. Learn more & shop Energy Star® certified appliances at dewaardandbode.com.

Major home appliances have undergone some dramatic changes in recent history. From innovation in design, style, and function, we have seen home appliances become some of the most energy-efficient products available. Many of today’s models use much less energy than those from a decade ago. In response to tighter federal efficiency standards, appliance manufacturers have made strides in development of products that perform at a high level while using minimal energy. The home appliance industry has achieved significant efficiency gains that have dramatically reduced the energy and water use of products. According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, clothes washers now hold 20 percent more volume than they did in 2000 while using less water. The average amount of water used in a dishwashing cycle is down more than 41 percent since 2005. Many of today’s refrigerators use less than half of the energy of models sold 25 years ago. The rapidly growing home appliance industry continues to innovate and integrate technologies that improve efficiency and sustainability in the products that are a part of our everyday lives. The blue Energy Star® label, is given to appliances and other products that meet certain energy use requirements, and is becoming more commonplace on products across the board.

Best Bets for Happy Pets By Jay Roberts, President | Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association

Eating a good meal, taking a nap or playing outdoors are just a few of the simple pleasures in life that most pets and humans both appreciate. There are several ways you can show your pet how much they mean to you by incorporating certain design elements into your home. Many features will not only cater to your pet’s lifestyle, but they also can enhance your home’s appearance and add to its value. Whether you’re looking to buy a new home, remodel your existing home or just need some inspiration for how to use your current space, here are a few ideas to get started.

Improving Comfort and Convenience Designing areas within your home where your pet can eat, sleep and bathe tells them that they are just as much a member of the family as everyone else. And having these dedicated locations can also help reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning up after your pet. • Built-in eating areas are among the most popular designs concepts for homeowners with pets. Beneath the kitchen counter, under an island or within a pull-out drawer are all great options to help save space and minimize spills. • Custom nooks provide your pet with a quiet retreat to nap or play. Look for opportunities to incorporate these nooks beneath bay windows, or convert a cluttered crawl space beneath stairs into your pet’s private refuge. • Pet-washing stations in laundry/mud rooms can significantly improve the cleanliness of your home. An enclosed tiled area with an extended faucet can be used to give your pet a full bath or simply to clean paws after a romp in the outdoors.

Selecting the Right Flooring With the appropriate flooring, both you and your pet can live amicably without pointing fingers (or paws) at one another whenever a new scratch or a spill is discovered. Flooring options today are seemingly endless, and each type comes with varying levels of durability, so you’ll want to do your research as well as consult with a professional before making the investment. • Bamboo flooring is becoming increasingly popular, especially among pet owners, for its hardness and resistance to stains. And for those who are trying to be green, both bamboo and cork flooring are also good for the environment. • Hardwood floors have long been among the most desirable options, though many different types of wood and finishes are highly prone to showing wear over time. • Laminate, stone and tile floors might not be your best option if your pet’s comfort is a top priority. While they are much more durable and typically resist scratches better than other flooring, some pets will find them to be uncomfortably hard and exceedingly slippery. To find a home builder, remodeler or designer that can help you make the best home design choices for your pets, contact the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) at www.sicba.org for Find a Pro or call (360) 757-6916. 2018 SICBA Home and Garden Show

INVITING LANDSCAPE Creating a sense of order By Everett Chu

Color and texture contrast in an inviting wedding garden Photo by Everett Chu | WSU Skagit County Master Gardeners

An inviting landscape maximizes and optimizes our sensory experience when we enter the outdoor space and interact with its surroundings. It evokes positive emotion and makes us feel invigorated from the experience. This is the portion of the landscape design that focuses on aesthetic values. To make the landscape inviting, we need to address landscape elements and apply design principles. The landscape elements include line/ form, texture/color, light/noise and view/ privacy. These elements are organized and appointed according to needs and design principles. The important design principles include contrast/similarity, scale/proportion, rhythm/repetition, space/enclosure, layering/sequencing, dominance/emphasis, balance/harmony and order/unity. An inviting landscape will have few strong lines. Curvilinear lines are more natural; they allow the eye to slow down to enjoy the landscape in a more relaxed and inviting way. 2018 SICBA Home and Garden Show

Most man-made landscape-design themes are strongly related to two fundamental forms: circle and square. Repetition of similar forms in the landscape can make it more harmonious and inviting. Texture refers to how fine, coarse, bold or rough a surface is. It adds interest and varieties. Coarse texture dominates and attracts the eye, while fine texture unifies and exaggerates the distance. A combination of coarse and fine texture in close sequence can be inviting. Color is the reflection of light waves from an object. There are twelve basic colors on the color wheel. Three are primary colors: yellow, red and blue. Mixing any two primary colors creates three secondary colors: green, orange and violet. Complimentary colors are on opposite sides of the color wheel, such as yellow and violet, blue and orange and red and green. When the complementary colors are placed next to each other, they intensify each other and the contrast is pleasing to the eye. On the other hand, analogous colors are within 3-to-5 adjacent hues on the

10

color wheel; they share a common color. Combinations like red, red-orange, orangered and orange create similarity and harmony. A monochromatic color scheme offers a soothing effect by employing only one hue and combining tints, shade and tones of that color. Light quality is a landscape element that affects the plant health as well as the overall aesthetic results. Degree of shade, time of day, and season all come into play in a design. The noise from a nearby highway is typically an unfavorable landscape element to address, whereas the sound of water from a stream or water feature is usually more desirable and inviting. The view is what a person sees or doesn’t see from a particular point within a space. The most significant views, from the vantage points, should be the focus in design, including panoramic, concentrated, and blocked view. On the opposite spectrum, a sense of privacy and security from blocked views contributes significantly SICBAHomeShow.com

to the positive experience and should be addressed with a higher priority. Proportion is the size relationship between the features of the landscape, vertically and horizontally. Scale is the absolute proportion in relation to an object. In an inviting landscape, few things should be out of proportion. Every well-designed landscape area should have a prominent, dominant element in its composition. Such strong emphasis (focal points of sculpture, furniture, planter or plants) contrasts with adjacent elements, draws the viewer’s eye first and establishes a sense of unity by common subordination. Repetition is a good technique to simplify and unify the landscape. When landscape features, including planting, repeat enough times with certain interval between repetitions, a rhythm is established within the user’s experience. This experience can be further strengthened when time and movement are involved, such as when walking a trail or driving on a long driveway. Landscape space should be developed as gardens of many rooms. Enclosure for the rooms would confine the eyesight and promote a sense of shelter, making the space more inviting. Landscape planting can be more appealing when it is done in layers, both vertically and horizontally. The gradual transition in heights and widths provides a better spatial connection for the eye. When the planting is sequenced according to the texture and color preferences (fine over

Repetition and rhythm in an inviting entryway garden Photo by Everett Chu | WSU Skagit County Master Gardeners

coarse and with contrasts), the layering will be even more effective. An inviting landscape is balanced in many ways, to bring comfort from a sense of harmony. A spatial balance can be achieved with symmetry, when elements are equally arranged around one or more axis and various portions of the design are in equilibrium with each other. It provides a formal character and is a very powerful design theme. Its fallacy is that the symmetry usually ends at some points, creating visual chaos in the transition. A more relaxed and inviting approach to

attain informal balance is through asymmetry, by applying equal visual weight from nonequivalent elements on either side of an axis. This option has the potential of being more visually interesting, because there are two sides to explore and observe. And the longer-term risk of not being able to maintain the symmetry is much reduced. When the landscape is built according to the above principles, visual and physical balance will be achieved, and everything will appear in its rightful place. It will bring an internal feeling of oneness and overall unity, and the spatial layout and organization will create a sense of order in the landscape. That is the ultimate accomplishment in creating an inviting landscape. RESOURCES: Landscaping Principles and Practices. 5th edition. Jack E. TOP DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2018 By Jay Roberts President | Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association At the start of each year, the Best in American Living Awards (BALA) recognizes dozens of new projects from this past year featuring the most innovative layouts and eye-catching design elements. Whether you’re looking to buy a new home, thinking about renovating your current one, or you’re just interested in what’s new in home design, here are some of the biggest trends you’ll see dominating in 2018.

Open but defined floor plans Instead of one large, undefined space, open floor plans will evolve to include more definition in 2018, whether it’s by shifting materials, adding columns, or changing the ceiling height. This way, you can still get the airiness of an open floor plan while giving each section its own definition and style.

More developed regional styles In both single-family and multifamily projects, strong regional styles have emerged all over the country. For example, in Michigan, expect to see lots of familiar peaked roofs, layered facades, and sturdy columns.

Restored and repurposed Historic preservation and restoration, as well as adaptive reuse projects, are becoming increasingly popular with multifamily designers and developers. Adaptive reuse projects are particularly sought-after by millennials who love the story behind a repurposed building and want to live somewhere stylish, unique and chic.

Right-sized kitchens Leave massive kitchen islands in 2017. You’ll be seeing far fewer double islands appearing in 2018, and even single islands are being designed to be smaller and more proportionally sized with the kitchen and adjoining rooms.

Spa-like baths Who doesn’t want to feel like they’re stepping into a spa every day? Bath design is trending toward refinement and sophistication, with home baths becoming more and more reminiscent of upscale hotels and spas. Tasteful and luxurious are the two words that will define baths in 2018. Floating vanities and stand-alone tubs will also be more popular this year.

Clean details You’ll notice clean, simple lines and detailing in homes everywhere. Forget about overly-ornate decor and shift toward thinking more minimally. It will make your home feel fresh, new, and uncluttered for the year ahead.

Metal and wood exterior details You’ll be seeing this trend a lot this year, particularly on singlefamily homes. There will be an increased use of metal and wood in exterior details, with the two materials often combined to create interesting, two-tone facades for both traditional and contemporarystyle homes. It gives the impression of bringing the past and future together into one cohesive idea, making homes seem modern and sleek without sacrificing a warm, natural feel.

Whites, grays and charcoal paints Gray is still a strong trend with home buyers, and it looks like white is here to stay. You’ll see more monochromatic designs that add variety by incorporating multiple textures instead of pops of color. For example, think about a white kitchen with quartzite countertops, a white shiplap ceiling, white cabinets, and airy white window coverings. This creates a clean and multi-layer look that is guaranteed to compliment itself and please a wide variety of buyers. For more information about the latest designs that could be incorporated in your home, or to find a builder in your area that can create the new home of your dreams, contact the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) at sicba.org or call (360) 757-6916. 2018 SICBA Home and Garden Show

becoming just another place where you go to zone out and stare at the TV. Instead, opt for a dedicated reading space. You can go with a classic window nook, or get a stylish day bed and cover it in throw pillows. Who knows, you might even use it as a place to sneak in an afternoon nap. Finish it off with a free-standing bookcase or mount some quick and easy shelves on the wall to hold all those books you’ve been wanting to read.

Exercise or Office Space

Create the Perfect Getaway with a She Shed By Kim Piazza Treasurer | Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association

We’ve all heard about the growing prevalence of man caves for years, but get ready for a lot more buzz about “she sheds.” A she shed is a free standing building in your home’s backyard - a space where a woman can go to invest time in her hobbies, get some work done, or just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the home. Sound like a great project to take on? Here are some of the most popular uses for she sheds:

Art and Crafting Studio The she shed gives you a great opportunity to invest more time and intention in your passions. If you’re an artist, whether professionally or as a hobby, create a space dedicated to your craft. To make the space work, invest in some storage solutions to organize all of your crafting supplies, or finally get that easel you’ve been wanting but didn’t have space

for in the main house. If you’re a photographer, you can even look into turning your she shed into a darkroom or photography studio.

Outdoor Seating Think about adding a bench or a small table and a couple of chairs in front of your she shed so you can sit with a friend and enjoy some beautiful weather with your favorite beverage. It’ll feel like you’re at a chic cafe but in the comfort of your own backyard. Don’t forget to make sure the furniture and fabrics are weatherproof so you won’t have to worry about dragging it inside whenever it rains or snows.

If your passion is yoga, pilates, or weight lifting, you can turn your she shed into a space where you can blast your favorite music in a dedicated work-out space. Or, if you’re looking for a place to hunker down and focus on work, your she shed could become an office where you can go to write, brainstorm, make phone calls, or whatever else your professional life requires. At the end of the day, your special space should be a reflection of you – a place where you love to spend time, whether it’s relaxing, creating, or getting work done. Have fun with it and make it into something that enhances your life. To find a professional who can help you create your perfect she shed, contact the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) at sicba.org or call (360) 7576916.

Reading Nook Consider making your she shed a screen-free space. You don’t want to risk it

Growing List of Green Products and Practices Now Common in New Homes By Martha Rose

Chair | SICBA Built Green®

As the home building industry celebrates New Homes Month in April, recent research shows single-family builders use an average of 10 different green products or practices with each new home they build. That’s good news for the wave of consumers taking advantage of the spring home buying season to find a home that’s perfect for their lifestyle. And that makes it even more important to understand the many advantages of owning a newly constructed home.

2018 SICBA Home and Garden Show

24

SICBAHomeShow.com

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) asked builders in January about the green products and practices they use with homes they built during the past year. Among the most popular green products: low-e windows, high efficiency HVAC systems, programmable thermostats, ENERGY STAR appliances and energyefficient duct systems. The most common green practices include improving the home’s thermal envelope, using moisture-control measures to enhance durability and using efficient construction techniques to minimize material usage. The survey also revealed 22 percent of single-family builders always or almost always have their homes certified to a green standard. Home buyers rank energy efficiency features among the most desirable things they want in a new home. But they also want the ability to select their favorite appliances, flooring, paint colors and other design elements to give their home a personal touch from the day they move in. Indeed, those characteristics are just some of the countless advantages of buying a new home. There are many other benefits of owning a new home that might be less obvious, but are often found to be just as valuable.

Strong Sense of Community One of the built-in benefits of many new homes is the new neighborhood. When families move into a new community at the same time, lasting bonds of friendship and neighborliness often form right away. Many home builders will host community

block parties in these developments to help neighbors of all ages meet and connect.

Ability to Entertain Older homes are often smaller and therefore more challenging in which to host gatherings with friends and family. Today’s home builders are creating more open spaces with higher ceilings, larger windows and expansive great rooms for added convenience and modern living.

A Clean Slate When moving into a new home, you won’t have to spend hours stripping dated wallpaper or painting over an ugly wall color. There are no oil stains to remove in the

garage, no windows to replace, no walls to be torn down. Everything is already just the way you want it.

Peace of Mind Building standards have changed a great deal over the decades, almost as fast as technology has evolved. New homes can accommodate today’s advanced technology and be customized to meet the individual home owner’s needs. And knowing the home was built to the latest safety codes gives the owner added assurance. For more information on the benefits of a new home, contact the Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) at sicba.org or (360) 757-7916 or visit NAHB at nahb.org.
