HEALTHY AND COMFORTABLE: A Guide to Enhance Your Home Ventilate Right: Okay, along with tightening up the home, a plan for bringing in fresh air in a controlled way is in order. If you are building a new home, the easy answer is a heat recovery ventilation system that runs 24/7. Think of it as the “lungs of the home”. This machine brings in fresh air that is warmed up by the outgoing air and is indeed a game changer in the level of comfort for new homes. But I’m not building new, you say! That’s okay; there are other strategies to freshen air in the home. They won’t be as energy efficient but will allow for improved health. A bath fan on a timer with a corresponding fresh-air port through the wall that opens when the fan comes on, will allow you to control when and how the air comes into your home. Healthy Building Materials: One of the biggest culprits causing poor health is the use of formaldehyde in many building products. The best way to avoid it is to purchase real materials with few ingredients, just like one might shop for food. Examples of products that usually contain formaldehyde are interior grade plywood (it’s in the glue) and particle board. Fortunately, today, one can look almost anything up online. Just Google MSDS Sheet for whatever product you are considering. Opt for No or Low VOC’s: Volatile Organic Compounds are vapors that are released from many products including paints and other finishes. They cause eye, nose, and throat irritation. The construction industry has really progressed in offering high quality alternatives that are water based and have almost no fumes. Even plumber’s glue is offered in a low VOC variety. But also be wary of bringing home furniture and other items into the home that may “smell like new”. Those are also VOC’s! And skip the air fresheners. They too, emit harmful chemicals. Summary: When homeowners are surveyed about what is most important to them in a home, two things rise to the surface: health and energy efficiency. Taking charge and implementing a strategy for air sealing and proper ventilation will literally make you feel better. These are two of the pillars of Built Green homes, a voluntary program that certifies homes that are built in a more environmentally friendly way. For more information go to www.builtgreen.net

By Martha Rose, president, Martha Rose Construction www.MarthaRoseConstruction.com Do you ever walk around your home in the winter and wish that it wasn’t so drafty? Or maybe long to have your windows open year round because the air feels stale? Maybe your kids constantly have runny noses or you now have allergies that you didn’t used to have. According to the National Institute of Health, poor indoor air quality is the cause of many ailments. Let’s look at some ways you can improve the atmosphere inside your home. Air Sealing: Did you know that up to half of your need to heat your home is from air leakage? But wait! You may say. Doesn’t air leaking in help with fresh air? Well, no. The reason is, it is seeping in through walls and around windows and it is too humid and carrying mold spores and dust from the wall cavities. Controlling how the air comes in is step one. Most insulation contractors are good at finding the leaks and fixing them. Some energy companies offer incentives to hire an energy auditor to help with this. While doing an analysis, they can also advise on the viability of adding more insulation.

Your Spring Home Maintenance Checklist By Jay Roberts, President, Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association For home owners, warmer weather means it’s time to get organized and tackle your spring home maintenance jobs early so you – and your home – can enjoy the change of seasons with minimal stress. It can be daunting to take on a long list of chores and repairs, but remember that putting in a little effort now will save you time and money in the long run. Following this list will help you get started.

home owner’s nightmare: pests. Seal any cracks along baseboards, behind sinks, and around pipes and windows. Mend any holes in window screens to keep pests outside your home where they belong. Termites are one of the most harmful household pests. Here in the Northwest, we are blessed with large black Carpenter Ants that will damage your home just as bad as termites.

Windows Make sure all your windows are securely in place and operating properly. If you like having your windows open in the spring, install screens in your windows and storm doors. First make sure the screens are clean by gently washing them with soapy water. Next, clean the window tracks and take a close look at all of the weatherstripping. First, take a walk around the entire perimeter of your home and check the condition of glazing compound, caulk, and exterior paint. Replace or touch up wherever need. You’ll also want to give some time and attention to your landscaping earlier rather than later. Seed and feed the lawn, plant annuals, and cut back any perennials that need pre-growth pruning. Check your roof for any signs of winter damage, whether from heavy snowfall or fallen debris. While you’re up there, go ahead and clean out your gutters, even if you already did it in the fall. Ladders Ladders can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. Accidents most often occur if ladders are improperly placed or secured, or if you’re using the wrong size ladder for the job at hand. Follow these tips to stay safe: • Read all warning labels and follow directions closely. • Only use ladders on a stable, level surface. • Keep your body centered on the ladder. Never lean over either side rail. • Never stand on the top two rungs. • Only use a step ladder when fully opened and in locked position. Never use a it when closed or partially open and leaning against a structure. • Don’t work within 10 feet of overhead power lines. They can pose a serious electrical hazard.

Yard Tools Doing yard work can mean you’re working with some serious pieces of machinery. If you’re determined to do it all yourself, make sure to wear appropriate eye, body, and hearing protection for the entire project. Never remove any guards or safety devices. And remember to always service your lawnmowers yearly. Looking for some help with your home maintenance tasks? Contact the Skagit/ Island Counties Builders Association (SICBA) at 360 757-6916 or www.sicba.org for a list of professionals who can help you tackle your to-do list. SICBAHomeShow.com

ZEN AND THE ART OF A MEDITATION GARDEN: Create Your Own Peaceful Sanctuary By Everett Chu, Azusa Farm & Gardens Ask the Master Gardener column – original publication June 8, 2018 in Skagit Valley Herald) Zen is a school of Buddhism originated in China and strongly influenced by Taoism. The word translates to motionless meditation and a mental state of peacefulness and relaxation. Such enlightenment is obtained through a process of inward search and reckoning of one’s true nature. A Zen garden, therefore, is a sacred and meditative place for thought. It is appropriately defined as “a special spiritual place where the mind dwells.” In today’s increasingly-chaotic life, such place allows us to reconnect with nature and experience the wholeness of self. The foundation of Japanese garden is nature, and the four seasons, to capture nature’s changing mood. Also, a spatial relationship, when every element in the garden expresses inherent “force” that must be recognized and harmonized. There are five different types of Japanese gardens, each offers different hints for creating our meditation garden: 2019 SICBA Home and Garden Show

ɶɶ The Dry Garden is the idyllic Zen garden made of stone arrangements, white sand, moss, and pruned low trees are used to mimic natural landscape. As its name implies, no pond, stream, or real water is included. Raked sand symbolically represents rippled seawater, stone groupings are islands. Contemplation is from adjacent space, rather than physically entering. ɶɶ The Courtyard Garden is an enclosed inner garden surrounded by buildings or garden structures. It brings a detailed representation of the natural world into a very small space. The sheltered enclosure would easily offer the ambience for a meditation garden. ɶɶ The Tea Garden is an open space between an entrance and teahouse. Usually including a stone path in a forest-like setting, for slow movement, settling the mind before reaching the teahouse. Often a roofed bench is provided to wait for the summon from the host, before entering the pure inner world. Avoid distracting the meditative state, by

leaving out bright, showy plants or ornaments. A water basin may be provided to cleanse before entering. ɶɶ The Stroll Garden connects different parts of the overall garden and offers additional experience. One important design consideration is different views offered at different points and in certain sequence. It can create a destination feel and add to the meaning of a meditation garden. ɶɶ The Hill-and-Pond Garden is a large-scale garden, dating back over 2,000 years, the oldest of the other four. It combines manmade hills and ponds, represents coastlines and islands. This garden can add depth for meditation. The hill a backdrop, and the pond a lake or ocean view farther away. Create your unique sanctuary, locate space for tranquility, free from noise and distractions. The following are some design ideas: ɶɶ Make it a destination, to give a sense of arrival through a designed journey. Tea garden or a stroll garden. ɶɶ Provide a gate and enclosure, to SICBAHomeShow.com

create a separation from the rest of the world. Consider having a distinct ground surface. Courtyard garden. ɶɶ Connect the garden to woodland, to immerse into or to look out of. A shaded site is better than an open site, contributing to a sheltered and restful feel. ɶɶ Choose colors that are more commonly found in nature, such as greens, browns, and blues. Avoid bright and stimulating colors. ɶɶ Add water features to mask traffic noise, increase calming effects, and bring greater focus. If the terrain allows, apply a small-scale hill-and-pond garden (above), or a self-contained, pond-less bubbler or fountain. ɶɶ Add other garden features, such as sculptural ornaments (stone lantern or stupa), bridges (symbolizing passage to nature) and steep stairs (helping in reaching of Zen). Although the components do matter, it is the meanings that are important. ɶɶ Provide seating space within or overlooking the garden. A comfortable chair or a simple beach towel on the ground. A Zen-influenced meditation garden is nature permeated with spirit. It fosters a sense of peace, tranquility, and comfort. Through the reconnection to nature, we find mindful awareness of the present moment, release from daily stress, and reach a more balanced way to our everyday life. IS IT A TREND? OR IS IT TRENDY? By Dave Paules

RUHLR LLC and NKBA Member

I am always asked what I think about a particular trend or style when it comes to residential remodeling products or design elements. What are the trends? Are they here to last? Will we be talking and writing about them a couple of years from now? Today, inspiration comes from every direction. Whether it is Houzz, HGTV, Pinterest, magazines, etc., customers are eager to incorporate the latest into their project for fear of missing out. So what are the remodeling trends for 2019 that will be around for a while? Which trends of the past have proven to be trendy and are not being incorporated into today’s projects?

Design Good design is here to stay. “I hate working in my kitchen!” is a common theme that is easily repeated without purposeful and thoughtful design. For kitchen and bath remodels, I suggest reaching out to a NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) design professional for help. They know and understand the importance of integrated work areas and how to incorporate and sort through the seemingly endless products available. You want your project to be a reflection of you and they can help.

Lighting and Home Automation

Pot Racks

Simply, it is here to stay! From modern integrated LED in cabinets and under cabinet lighting, to smart, heated and lighting systems controls, these trends are more affordable than ever before.

I hate dusting! With today’s cabinet storage solutions, your favorite pots and pans can be stored out of sight and be at the ready.

Multiple Small Fridges

Do you think anyone will really use this space??

Think point of use and you can be adding cool to where ever you need it.

Touch Activated Faucets These water saving faucets are great when you have kitchen prep hands and don’t fell like turning the water off and on. They can also save on your water bills, while spending no more than for a conventional kitchen or lav faucet.

REMODELING TRENDS I NEVER WANT TO SEE AGAIN Open Shelving In The Kitchen Having space just to stack up stuff, especially in the kitchen, just isn’t good designing and use of space.

Built-in Kitchen Desks Microwaves Over the Range Think universal design and this feature should be scrapped.

Subway Tile Patterns This design style has moved beyond being tired. The style is everywhere! Go beyond to a world of unexpected tile offerings. (NOTE: My wife believes the subway tile as a design is a classic and here to stay! We agree to disagree on this one.)

Conclusion Let these ideas serve as a design idea for your upcoming home or kitchen remodel. Combining functionality with aesthetics, universal design elements, and your project goals, it will result in a well executed project. Happy remodeling!
