HEALTHY ISLAND YOUTH INITIATIVE SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Healthy Island Youth Initiative (HIYI) Committee is pleased to announce that it recently received generous donations from Island Thrift, Soroptimist International of Oak Harbor, and Walmart, and an anonymous South Whidbey donor. These donations will support ongoing efforts to keep organized healthy activities affordable for all local youth in Island County.

The HIYI Scholarship Fund addresses these needs by helping cover the cost of registration fees, equipment and/or other expenses so that youth in Island County can participate in organized physical activities, regardless of their family’s economic status.

The South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, has kindly agreed to become the fiscal agent for HIYI, and will now receive, hold and distribute funds upon direction from the HIYI committee.

Donations to this fund may now be tax deductible. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made payable to South Whidbey Parks & Aquatics Foundation, and should be mailed to PO Box 157, Freeland, WA 98249, with a note on the memo line directing it to the “HIYI Scholarship Fund”.

Any Whidbey Island youth may apply for assistance to participate in any organized sport or physical activity. The needs-based scholarships are awarded based on financial criteria and commitment to the activity. Those interested in receiving financial assistance should call Carrie at (360) 221-6788 or visit www.islandcountyahc. org/Page/43 and print off an application.

ACCESSIBILITY & ACCOMODATION Individuals with or without disabilities may register for all programs offered

by South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District provided program safety can be met. The District provides reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. REFUNDS & CREDITS 1. Full refunds will be given for all classes cancelled by SWPRD. 2. Refunds requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be subject to a 10% service fee, with a minimum service fee of $10.

3. SWPRD account credits requested and submitted in writing using the Refund Request Form before the early fee deadline date (or at least 5 business days before start of program if no early fee deadline) will be good for one calendar year from issue date, for the full fee paid and will not be subject to service fee.

4. Refunds or credits will not be issued if cancelled after deadline date or within 5 business days of program start.

5. To request a refund, a Refund Request Form must be submitted to the SWPRD office in writing. Verbal requests will not be honored. Forms are available at the SWPRD office or online. Please be aware that refund requests may take up to 45 days to process.

6. Refunds will not be issued from an account credit.

7. Refunds will not be issued for programs costing $10 or less (unless cancelled by SWPRD).

8. One day classes, trips, or special events are not covered under this policy (no refunds or credits available).

All programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment. We request that you register in advance to ensure class minimums are met. We reserve the right to cancel a program if minimums are not met.

Come to this sampler event to find out what SWPRD has to offer! This is the perfect opportunity for families to sign up for and learn more about activities, events, and programs coming this summer. OYSTER GARDENING Learn to cultivate these seafood gems!

ADULTS & YOUTH AGES 16+ Discover the fun and satisfaction of cultivating your own oyster garden on your beach. You will learn about suitable beaches, gear used, oyster types, and health and environmental considerations. You will assemble gear for your garden and receive oyster seed to begin growing oysters. The 3-day class includes a visit to an oyster garden and classroom time. Gardening experience is very helpful and will help you understand the attention required to maintain your oyster garden.

What to bring: Weather and beach appropriate attire, and pictures of your own beach.

Instructor: Kurt Johnson has spent over 30 years in the shellfish farming industry from owning a mussel and oyster farm to

developing nursery and grow-out systems for mussels, oysters, scallops and geoducks in the US, Mexico and Canada. Materials fee provides oyster bags, oyster seed, and gear for securing bags to the beach.

Participants should have access to a private beach suitable for oyster growing, either through ownership or agreement with the owner. Suitable beaches have a firm gravel or cobble substrate at the 0 to +4 foot tide level and are not exposed to excessive wave action.

Sandy beaches are less suitable but can grow oysters for a gardener determined to put in more work. Many suitable beaches are found in Holmes Harbor and Saratoga Passage.

FIRST AID & CPR YOUTH AGES 14+ AND ADULTS In this course, you will learn and practice how to effectively recognize and respond to medical emergencies in the critical first minutes until emergency medical services arrive. These skills include American Heart Association CPR (for adults, children, and infants), First Aid, and use of an AED. Those who successfully complete the course will earn their AHA CPR/FA card.

Get out of your shell at this informational and hands-on workshop on clamming in our area. Learn about gear, harvesting regulations, where to go, and practical instructions. Sample steamed clams and enjoy the beach at low tide. You’ll take home your clam harvest (health conditions permitting), a clam measuring tool, and yummy recipes for serving up your finds.

Each person will need to bring shoes that can get wet and sandy, a 2+ gallon container that holds water, and a small shovel or hand cultivator for each person wanting to harvest clams.

Beginners are invited to build signing vocabulary, numbers and learn how to fingerspell. Sport signs will be taught, common phrases, and along with facial expressions, it is a lot like acting. Class is also geared toward individual needs and areas of interest. Students may bring in words to class and will be shown how to express it.

INTRO TO ARDUINO Learn to use Arduino micro processors

AGES 10+ OR BY PERMISSION Starting with a simple LED circuit, this class is for those who want to learn Arduino as part of their robotics class or program. Each student will get their own Arduino kit to begin building circuits and learning how to program the Arduino to build your great idea. Classes will cover Arduino hardware, interfacing with wires, resistors, capacitors, sensors, other circuits and how to begin programming your Arduino.

Sniffing out fun on Whidbey

This fast–growing dog sport teaches you how to encourage and develop your dog’s amazing natural scenting ability by using its desire to hunt and its love of food, toys, and exercise. This exciting detection style activity is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed, or physical ability and handlers of all ages and abilities. Each dog works separately, one at a time, so this is a class for dogs unsuited for a group setting. Classes are offered at all levels, from beginning to advanced doghandler teams. Programs are on-going and held Wednesdays and Sundays; dates later in summer will be determined in June.

ADULTS Land Navigation is fun! Orienteering is a fun way to make a sport of learning land navigation using topographical maps of parks and other land. It will be of interest to folks who enjoy maps, reading, jogging, hiking, or just stumbling around in a park (must be able to move on uneven terrain, canes are fine). Class will introduce basics of orienteering, including history and where orienteering fits in local to international organizations. Maps, books, online resources and other orienteering gear will be examined. Students will learn the fundamentals of map-based land navigation, then apply them right away in an Orienteering course at South Whidbey Community Park, either singly or in pairs (students’ choice).

Bring: A compass with clear baseplate if you have one, outdoor shoes, weatherappropriate clothing.

AGES 9-13, YOUNGER OK WITH AN ADULT Learn science by creating and launching your own model rockets! On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will assemble and finish a complete 20–inch model rocket.

Thursday will be launch day, when you are encouraged to bring along a camera and your fan club to document your rocket’s first flight! Rockets will be made from a cardboard tube, with balsa wood fins, and powered by a “B” or “C” Estes model rocket motor. The rockets have parachute recovery, so the student may take the rocket home.

SKIMBOARD PAINTING WORKSHOP AGES 7-17 Paint your own one–of–a–kind skimboard.

Join artists from Jack’d Skimboards to learn the basic techniques for painting with acrylic, watercolor, pencil, pen, airbrush, and screen printing. DIVISIONS FOR AGES 6-17 Whidbey Island Junior Tennis League is the perfect place to learn and play tennis with friends this summer! Players ages 6-10 will do large group warm ups and then be divided according to ability and age for drilling and match play. The focus is on skill development, sportsmanship and fun! Players ages 11+ will be matched up with equal-level opponents for match play.

ADULT COED SOFTBALL LEAGUE ADULTS 18+ Come show us that you still have it! Get exercise and blow off end-of-the-week steam at the best fields around. Get a team together or join the pick-up list. This is a clean, community oriented, alcohol– free league. ASA rules for softball will be followed, with a few exceptions (rules will be posted online). Emphasis is on healthful competition in a recreational atmosphere.

We provide one umpire per game to facilitate fair and spirited games. Teams typically play 2 games per evening, for a minimum of 14 games, plus tournament.

GIRLS IN GRADES 7-8

SESSIONS FOR YOUTH AGES 10+

Girls in grades 7-8 will have the opportunity to form teams with us to join in the S.W.I.S.H. Basketball League. This gives South Whidbey an opportunity for girls who would like a slightly more competitive option to play against teams in the Skagit County SWISH league. It’s also a chance for local kids to play as a team, rather than competing against each other. These are not “select” teams, in that we are not excluding anyone. Anyone who has the skill to play and who signs up in time is able to play. Look for more info in late August.

Learn to sail with South Whidbey Yacht Club! Our priorities are safety, then fun, then learning. Students must be comfortable in and on the water, and demonstrate the ability to stay afloat for 2 minutes without a life jacket.

Registration Deadline: Monday, Oct. 3.

Level 1: Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to learn the basics of sailing!

Each student will be assigned their own boat for the week. The course combines shoreside learning with lots of hands-on, on-the-water sailing experience. Students learn boating safety, basic seamanship, and knot tying.

Schedule: Games begin Saturday, Oct. 22 (Seeding Game). We play 8 regular season games (some double headers) Saturdays Oct. 29-Dec. 3. League Tourney will be either Dec. 10 or Dec. 17. Practices will vary.

Level 2: This class is limited to youth ages 12+ who have attained a Level-2 competency. Youth will sail in two-person boats, further their sailing and seamanship skills, and begin basic competitive sailing.

Other basketball opportunities for other ages and boys will be offered in the Fall Activity Guide, available in early September.

Instructors: Our head instructors are US Sailing certified and will be assisted by experienced dinghy sailors. Sufficient staff

will be on hand to ensure each participant receives personal attention.

Location: On the first morning, students meet at the Honeymoon Lake Clubhouse for swim assessment and orientation; then that afternoon and the rest of the days will be at Lone Lake Public Access class (no transportation provided). ART CAMP Around the World of Art

AGES 6 – 11 Join us for this super fun and creative instructional art camp which will give you the opportunity to explore the arts and crafts from around the world. Participants will create their own art works inspired by many diverse cultures, such as Japan, Australia, Europe and Africa. Children will get to use lots of fun materials such as charcoal, oil pastels, acrylic paints, sumi ink, bamboo calligraphy pens, and paper and canvas.

Projects will include: printmaking, collage, drawing and painting and some crafts such as marbling paper. Bring a bag lunch and drink, sunscreen, and clothing that can be worn working on messy art projects or an art apron.

AGES 10-13 Have fun learning about Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs, also known as underwater robots) in a safe and collaborative work space. Become familiar with buoyancy, thrusters, cameras and manipulators as well as motor control and electrical circuits.

Working in groups, you will assemble an underwater robot then use it to investigate under the surface of SW waters.

AGES 8–13 Under the direction of former professional baseball player and Atlanta Braves scout, Steve Goucher, this camp provides quality instruction in throwing, hitting, and fielding and will include game situations and scrimmaging. Camp is well suited for all players, from aspiring to elite.

No previous kayaking experience is needed for this fun-filled water-orientated camp!

Our experienced guides will introduce participants to basic water safety and sea kayaking skills including: types of craft, outfitting & gear, wet exits, self and assisted rescue, key paddle strokes, and bracing. But it’s not all work - expect to get wet playing games like ‘kayak polo’ and ‘kayak sponge tag.’ Participants must be comfortable with deep, over-your-head water while wearing a personal flotation device. They must also be able to pull oneself up onto the deck of a pool from the deep end without use of steps or ladders. Prerequisites: Swimmers must be able to swim one length of the pool freestyle with side breathing and one length of the pool backstroke. New swimmers must tryout with Coach Kristi Eager prior to registering.

Equipment: Swimmers must have an appropriate swim suit (jammers for boys, one piece for girls), goggles, swim cap and swim training fins. New swimmers will be given a Stingray team cap.
