A Look Into the 8th-Grade Projects For those of you who don’t know, in the center of the Chinook Woods in Clinton stands “Whidbey Island Waldorf School” a pre-8 year Rudolf Steiner school. Every year the graduating class (the 8th grade) spends 6 months of the year focusing on their individual ‘8th grade projects.’ The 8th grade projects are a favorite tradition of many, students look forward to and plan their own from even before 1st grade. Each student of the graduating class will create, build, research, or learn about their chosen topic. With help from their agreed mentors they will each work towards their chosen goals. This year the graduating class of eight students have taken on eight ambitious topics for discovery. Caelan Boyd - ‘Costumery’ Slater Canright -Underwater Robotics Sophie Dudley - Physical Training: Trainee and Trainer *Ada Faith-Feyma - Newspaper Production, Creating The Whidbey Current Kelvin Jenkins -Making a Go-Cart Ravi Neumeyer - Designing RaviGami.com Gabriella Toombs - Portiarture Dalton Verellen -Kindergarten Teaching The projects will conclude with one night of presentations on February 28. The 8th grade projects, though looked forward to, can cause some angst among students, whether it is indecisiveness or deadlines, they can be a stressful endeavour.
“My project is designing and building an underwater robot that can fly around, and film, and pick up stuff.” -Slater Canright, 8th grade “I am costuming 'Twelfth Night' and 'James and the Giant Peach.' It helps me relax. I am always stressed out about about my school work because I am behind a lot and costuming helps me relax and not worry about homework.” - Caelan Boyd, 8th grade “I did Raku pottery. It honestly gave me a lot of joy doing it and made me a happier person. But, it also taught me patience and how to focus” - Megan Fickel, Alumni “My project is portrait art and I’ve learned a lot about the techniques of perfecting a portrait and making it look like the subject” - Gabi Toombs, 8th grade Who is/was your mentor and how did you find them?
“Yes I was, because I really wanted to start building my bot” -Slater Canright, 8th grade “Yes, it’s always fun to see what the 8th graders pick” -Amber Fickel, 7th grade “Not really, at the beginning it was a bother because of trying to find a mentor and a project. But, now that I have a project it is a nice relaxing thing to do” -Caelan Boyd, 8th grade
“I found Karin Bolstad’s (my mentor’s) website online” - Gabi Toombs, 8th grade
Gabi Toombs, Portraiture
How did you choose your topic? What stood out to you the most about your topic and why did you choose it?
Caelan Boyd, ‘Costumery’
What was/still is your biggest fear about the 8th grade projects? Please be specific. “Probably the presentation because I have to fit a lot of info into a short amount of time. Also, finishing on time because I want to show my completed bot at the presentation” - Slater Canright, 8th grade “Yes, I’m worried that I won’t find a mentor” - Amber Fickel, 7th grade

“That I won’t accomplish all I set out to do. Or, that my project will be uninteresting” - Gabi Toombs, 8th grade
“I was excited to get a more in depth and technical knowledge of how an artist draws/paints portraits. I wanted to know the tricks” - Gabi Toombs, 8th grade
“My mentor is Nicole Keith. Her family has been friends of my family for a long time and she has costumed a lot of plays, which I thought would be fun.” - Caelan Boyd, 8th grade “Joan Govedare was my mentor. Her and her family are very good friends of my family” - Megan Fickel, Alumni
“Mostly speaking in front of so many people, but also not getting my project done. There was a lot to do and not a bunch of time” - Megan Fickel, Alumni
“Yes I was. I was excited for it because my project looked challenging but fun. I was looking forward for a challenge” -Megan Fickel, Alumni
“My mentor is Ashley McConnaughey and I found her when I did a camp with her a couple years ago” - Slater Canright, 8th grade
I have interviewed five students: three current 8th graders, Gabi Toombs, Slater Canright, and Caelan Boyd; one seventh grader, Amber Fickel; and one alumni, Megan Fickel, about their personal experiences with the 8th grade projects. Much to my delight, each student have vastly different views on the questions asked. What is/was your 8th grade project and how did/is it affecting your life?

than most people, I feel like it will be harder to get 12 meetings before February and complete all the costumes by opening night” - Caelan Boyd, 8th grade
“Probably my biggest fear is getting the 12 meetings and all costumes done with time to prepare for the presentation because I started later
“Iwas originally going to do woodworking or metal working but one day I was like building an underwater robot! That’s what I want to do for my project! I chose my project because I want to be a robotic engineer later in life” -Slater Canright, 8th grade “I was trying a lot of different things and mentors would respond in the negative or send me on to someone else. Nicole offered to mentor me in costuming. I hadn’t thought about it and knew I would enjoy it” - Caelan Boyd, 8th grade “I definitely knew I wanted to do something with my hands and that I had to do art. I was between pottery and graphic design. I didn’t know anyone who did graphic design, and the more I looked into Raku, the cooler it looked.” -Megan Fickel, Alumni

My reasoning behind a Q&A? As a student, I always have my own opinions on every event that I’m apart of, whether I’m in the audience or “in the band,” yet, no one asks. It’s a time old problem for teens, so, I wanted to get, and to give, an exclusive look into the opinions of my classmates and close friends. On the other hand, we as students don’t always know the exact reasoning behind certain events and traditions, so, I have asked Frances Kenney, a beloved teacher at my school, to give us a peek deeper into the tradition. Eighth grade projects are a tradition among many Waldorf schools around the world. From the teacher’s perspective, these projects provide a unique opportunity for students to dive deeply into a new or treasured interest, experience the rewards of working one on one with an adult mentor, and step out into a world of self-directed learning beyond the classroom walls. For the student, the 8th grade project involves moving out of comfort zones, sustaining a commitment and schedule, keeping a weekly journal, and then synthesizing, outlining and presenting their experience to an audience. In some ways, theses projects highlight a momentous transition for the student, almost like a rite of passage, where they begin to take on a new level of responsibility for their own learning and life path. Witnessing these students share their experiences at the final presentation, I am always moved by their unique perspectives and ideals, awed by their confidence and energy, and full of hope for the future they hold in their hands.” -Frances Kenney These projects are a construct of learning, both emotionally and mentally. As students, we have so little time to really learn about the world we will be stepping into when we graduate, so, we are grateful for this chance, because it is not guaranteed that we will get another like it. -Ada Faith-Feyma

“I once believed that I possessed creative talent, but I have given up this idea; A woman must not desire to compose -- there has never yet been one able to do it. Should I expect to be the one?”

Thank You from the Editor My name is Ada Faith-Feyma, I’m 14, and I’m in the graduating 8th grade class at Whidbey Island Waldorf School. Even if this sounds like a biography, that’s not what I’m going for. This newspaper, The Whidbey Current, is my 8th grade project. With the help of Eric Marshall, the editor of Whidbey Weekly, and his great team, I was able to take my first expectations of this project (I wanted to make a 2 sheet “example” of a newspaper) and turn it into the full-blown newspaper that you have before you. I’m not going to lie, it was really hard. A great deal harder than it may look, from writing to ad sales, I had to do it all, and, if you didn’t already realize, that’s a lot of work (see pgs. 1-all of them). For the past six months I’ve been working on this in airports, in Target (I’m not joking), and in the ferry lane. In that span of time my stress levels have doubled, and then tripled in the past 2 weeks. The thing is, I didn’t do it alone, and thank goodness because there would be no Whidbey Current if I had attempted to do so. I want to thank Eric, for mentoring me, and the Whidbey Weekly team for even agreeing to putting out two newspapers in one week, when it took me 6 months to put out one. These people are so good at what they do.
