Meet the

Whimsy Illustrators Criss Armstrong Crissy Armstrong is living the dream of her youth; creating art every day. Whether that art takes the form of drawing, coloring, painting or creating a card, she is never more relaxed and content than when she is in the process of creating. She took some drawing courses at the high school level as well as painting courses through her local college and art clubs, and has kept her skills sharp by constant practice. Most days find her in her bright, spacious studio that has a beautiful view of the surrounding Northern Ontario forest and the lake near her house. She loves to take her dog for walks in the bush where she often sees wildlife. She has always loved observing and interacting with animals; their cute and often humorous antics serve as great inspiration for her drawings. In 2009, Crissy started drawing images for Whimsy Stamps, and has been illustrating for them ever since. “Drawing for Whimsy is one of my greatest joys. I get to reach into that endless well of childlike wonder again and again. I really enjoy adding humor to my images too, and sometimes I find myself laughing even as I draw. I think, if it makes me laugh to draw it, perhaps it will make other people laugh to use the image on a hand made card, and then perhaps also make the recipient of the card laugh too. If I think of it that way, the joy gets multiplied many times over.” She considers it a high compliment when crafters purchase her images to use on their own creations, and she loves to see the end result, which she feels is a “collaboration” between her and the Whimsy customer. “I can’t pick a single favorite image that I’ve drawn,” she says, “but I can say that I generally favor my horse, dog, cat, and penguin images, and anything to do with the Christmas theme. Crissy feels so blessed to say she has been very happily married to Mike for over 30 years. Together they raised four children who are now fully grown and on their own. They are so proud of their kids and their two grandchildren, whom they visit as often as they can. “I have so much to be thankful for, I cannot begin to tell you. Every day I get to do what I was made to do; create art. And all the while Mike spoils me rotten too. I am a lucky girl, and I know it.” She hopes that joy and gratitude comes across in her drawings because she would like nothing more than to spread that joy to others. www.whimsystamps.com

Elisabet Bell Childhood is a magical moment in life. A child is a wonderful person. She is free. She is unapologetically HER, vibrant, adventurous, inquisitive, fun loving, happy, fearless. A child has no inhibitions. She believes in herself. She is loved for who she is. Her heart is as big as the world. She loves to learn new things, and has a million questions and seeks to find all the answers. She is authentic, filled with love, and a love for discovery. When we shine like a child, we are our Best selves. We are strong, beautifully charismatic and absolutely irresistible. We are not soft, or weak. We are happy, and subconsciously learn to adapt to our strengths. Childhood is an enriching, magical moment of our lives, and today is no exception. By honoring the child within you, you tap into the REAL you. You begin to discover who you truly are today. You understand your journey so far, where you want to continue it, and how amazing you are in the process. We each have what it takes to fulfill our dreams, to reach out, to make a positive difference. To be successful. To be happy. A child can teach us so much about ourselves. This is why my mantra is, "Honor Your Inner Child." This is why so much of my art focuses on children, and the beauty, the innocence, the fearlessness, the "Peter Pan," even the magic, that lies within this part of ourselves. Because childhood is ageless. It is timeless. And it lives within each of us right now. Childhood is the foundation of my art. And the art of being YOU. So BE You. Be Unapologetically You. Be your Best Self. Be your own kind of Magic. And Honor your inner child™, and all your possibilities. Because You make the Difference. Lots of love, xo Elisabeth www.whimsystamps.com

Kristďż˝ Heij-Barber

I Love to Draw. That about sums it up. It is all I've ever wanted to do. I was lucky enough to live that dream and work in Animation for over 15 years. Almost a decade of which, was as an Animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. I had the pleasure to work on such films as, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, Atlantis, Lilo and Stitch and Brother Bear. After the studio closed in 2004, my husband and I relocated to the mid-west. Since then I have concentrated on raising my 2 beautifully spirited children, while making a new career in Illustration and Design. From my body of work, you can see I love drawing fun, happy animals and children and food. There is no object safe from me! When I hear my drawings made you smile, it just makes my day!

Lee Holland Hi my name is Lee Holland and I am a children's book illustrator who has a passion for cute illustrations and character design. I love spending days out in the woods with my family and this is where I get a lot of my inspiration from when coming up with new characters and images. I've enjoyed being part of the crafting world and designing images for Whimsy Stamps. It's great to see crafters using my images and bringing them to life in their own unique way.

M Ra Jung Hello I am Mi Ran artist of Art by MiRan. I was born in Seoul, South Korea. I grew up with Korean and Japanese Manga. In my childhood, I loved drawing and making my own little stories. I moved to Canada in my late 20s, where I reside with my husband. My hobby is drawing and reading a lot of manga and novels. Also, I love making cards. I found my new hobby of making cards after I start drawing stamp images. Now I’m totally addicted to playing with stamps and collecting paper crafting supplies. I love sharing my art and creating new images. I receive so much joy seeing others make them into beautiful works of art.

Nina-Marie Trapani Hi there, I’m Nina-Marie! I am a fun, quirky artist in my mid-twenties; illustrating and designing is my job and I love everything about it. I grew up my whole life by the ocean, along the coast of the Mid Atlantic and New England; to this day, I still enjoy spending my spare time looking for sea glass and seashells while listening to the sound of the waves hit the shoreline. I hold a special love in my heart for both cats and horses alike, and my favorite colors are turquoise and purple. I have been making cards since 2007, perfecting my skills and techniques every day; no matter how new or advanced an artist is, you discover new things all the time. Whenever I'm asked to define my style, I simply say "eclectic". I do not follow a set design style; rather, I simply design whatever my mind feels like creating at that time... which can be quite varied depending on the day! If you asked what my favorite types of cards to make are though, I would have to say critter cards... I cannot resist the cuteness! :) What I enjoy most from my artistry is sharing my love of life through my creativity; bringing joy and smiles to people's faces, and spreading laughter amongst those I interact with. Life becomes dull without love and laughter.

Tutorial I often get asked what do I do with all my scraps of card and paper. One idea is to make card toppers. These are quick and easy to make and will definitely come in handy some time when you need a quick card.

Turn to page 32 for supplies

www.whimsystamps.com

27

Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 1 Pick some cardstock and papers that mix and match. You dont have to use big pieces, you can have small strips. As you can see in photo 1 and 2, I have used all sorts of sizes. I tried to keep them rectangle or square as these are easy shapes to work with. You can make them what ever size you want, my sizes for the base matts are, green card 13cm x11cm, black card 13.5 x 11.5 cm, grey card 14x11.5 cm.

www.whimsystamps.com

28

Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 2 Once you have your base card, then you can just add bits of paper that will fit onto the card. Again, you dont have to use full sizes, use several layers to cover your base matte. This is the idea behind using all the scraps. You can also distress the edges or use some white paint to add a bit of texture. Another idea would be to add stitching before you stick everything together, but you dont have to, they look great without any added details.

www.whimsystamps.com

29

Whimsy Stamps, LLC

step 3 Once you have all your papers sorted, you can stamp a simple message or use an odd stamped image you have colored but have not used yet. This is a perfect project for something like this. Simply matte it onto another bit of card either matching or a different shade. Final step should you want to, you can add embellishments such as ribbons and bows, die cuts or flowers. As a tip: I kept mine plain until I was ready to mount them onto a card, this way they store flat until i use them. Hope you enjoyed this little tutorial f or using up scrap papers. hugs Tracy x

Whimsy Stamps Products: Clearly Whimsy Stamps set Feeling Fruity; Materials used: Circle paper punch 1 3/4" (or die, depending what kind of stamped label you'll be using), Vellum paper, Cardstock, white, yellow and black stamp pads (or whatever colors you prefer), Acrylic block

Step 1: I used the circle label from the 'Feeling Fruity' stamp set and stamped it with black ink onto my piece of white cardstock.

Step 2: Now onto our first mask. I punched out a circle from the vellum paper. Keeping the rest of the vellum paper, you'll need it later as your second mask! The punched out circle should cover the stamped circle completely. In my case I had to use a 1 3/4" inch circle punch. I adhered it using repositionable tape.

www.whimsystamps.com

34

Whimsy Stamps, LLC

Step 3: Using yellow ink I stamped a row of lemons onto my white cardstock; also right over my vellum covered circle

Step 4: Removing the vellum circle and making sure there's no tape residue left. Any sticky leftovers are best removed using an eraser

Step 5: The leftover piece of vellum paper is our second mask. It's kept in place again with repositionable tape.

www.whimsystamps.com

35

Whimsy Stamps, LLC

Step 6: Using the lemon stamp again I stamp the two wedges connecting with the circle again. After inking my stamp I remove most of the ink by stamping on a piece of scrap paper first. This way the color is much softer. Thanks to the clear stamps and the acrylic block aligning the image is easy.

Step 7: Removing the vellum paper mask and any tape residue. Now you have a softer colored image shining through your label.

Step 8: Which gives a little bit the effect of looking through a frosted glass. Stamping the sentiment with black into right into the label over the soft image.

Supplies Need for tutorials: Copic Markers: V20, BV31, C01, C00, BV20, B0000, B00, B01 and a Colorless blender pen; good quality blending cardstock such as Make it Crafty blending card or Express-It.

Creating a Cloudy Sky by Bridget Curnow Staring with the small wispy clouds at the bottom of the image, use the C00, then you have to hold the pen very lightly and very lightly touch the paper, with what is best described as a shaky movement, and map out the outline of your clouds Repeat for as many clouds as you want in your sky, then take the C01 and starting underneath each cloud, use the shaking movement to trace along the previous outline. Then using BV31, trace your outlines to give more depth to the bottoms of the clouds. Continue with the light shaking movements using BV20 and V20 to complete each cloud and blend into the sky. Adding these colors will create some texture and additional depth.

Card by Bridget Curnow Whimsy Stamps Products: Spring Chick and When it Rains from our Krista HeijBarber collection; Materials Used: card stock, ink, Copic Markers

Creating a Blue Sky by Bridget Curnow Using B01, underline your clouds to give a darker blue, then once this is done, go to your next shade down, which is B00 and use this to fill some of the sky, working away from the B01 and the clouds. Then lastly for your sky use B0000, which you can then blend with B01 to tone it down a shade, almost using it as a blender, then go ahead and fill in the rest of the sky with this color. The final step is to use the Colorless Blender to go over the clouds to remove some of the color and give them their light fluffy appearance. Small circular motions with the blender help to create the fluffy finish. Try and make it so the clouds get progressively larger as you move toward the top of the image and always put in half clouds as well to give the impression of a little movement. And just remember to use light touches, you can always build the colors up gradually, which is better than laying too much color down to begin with.
