welcome We run. We run for selfish reasons. We run to feel good. To get fit. We run to socialize. We run to have introspective moments. Running enables us to see new places and explore sights, sounds, and seasons. We run to leave all the chaos of our everyday challenges behind. Running provides us with achievements in speed and distance. We also run for selfless reasons. We run to raise awareness of great causes. We run to raise funds. Running creates community. This event is about community. It's about bringing runners together. Uniting the running community and local community, this race raises funds and awareness for a great cause, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada. As runners, we realize that race day is a magic moment. It's a single day where all of the benefits of running join together to make something memorable. Race day validates that the sum is much greater than the parts. The magic of this event is evident in the swelling numbers, the mad dash to register on time, and the addition of the 10 km course this year. This demand is a testament to the Whistler community's embrace of this event, the tireless work of the event organizers and volunteers, and the passion of the runners who keep returning year after year. So whether you walk the course, aim for a podium finish, target a PR, or just look to cross the finish line, on behalf of The North Face, I welcome you and thank you for being a part of this magic. We run together.

Corey Stecker, The North Face (Canada)

On behalf of the Board of Directors and Organizing Committee for The North Face Whistler Half Marathon, we welcome you to Canada’s hottest half marathon and to the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. I look forward to seeing you at the start (and finish) line on race day.

Dave Clark, Race Director

volunteers I athlete gear drop | contest Over 100 volunteers have devoted their personal time to helping The North Face Whistler Half Marathon be the event it is today. Please take a moment to thank a volunteer or two, as without them this event simply would not happen. You will see volunteers at the start and finish lines, on course, at package pick up, the carbo load dinner, and awards ceremony. Race Management is very thankful for the dedicated volunteers and wishes them as much fun and excitement as each of the athletes.

THANK YOU!

course safety Runner safety is of the utmost importance. Please note that this is NOT a closed course. Certain lanes on municipal roads are closed in the early kilometres of the race, however much of the course travels on open road and paved trail systems. Traffic of all kinds could be present at anytime and thus runners need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Other runners, pedestrians, cars, buses, and animals could be encountered at any point along the race course. As such we make the following recommendations for your safety: Always be aware of your surroundings Do not run with earphones; if you do, keep volume low so you can hear traffic Baby strollers/joggers are not permitted on the race course Do not pass other runners outside of marked lanes Be aware of buses near bus stops Watch for vehicles pulling out of private driveways Share the road and trail with cyclists and pedestrians Black bears are very much a part of life in Whistler, and are very active in the valley during the month of June as they have recently just exited their winter dens. Be aware of cubs and yearlings - where there is a young bear there is likely a momma bear too! For more information on bears and what you should do if you encounter a bear, please visit www.bearsmart.com.

timing I photography I race merchandise Timing — Partnering with Race Day Timing we are using Chronotracks’ latest technology - the “B” tag timing system which allows for race timing down to 1/1000 of a second. The timing chip is embedded in a label on your race bib, and stays there, removing the additional step of securing it to your shoe like other timing systems. Live results are posted online so your friends and family can get up to the minute results of your half-way split and overall finish time. The link will be live on race day. Please note that prize money for overall results and awards for age groups will be awarded on gun time, not chip time.

Photography— Photography Coast Mountain Photography is the official photography service for The North Face Whistler Half Marathon. Professional photographers will be located at the start and finish line as well as along the race course. Be sure to smile for the camera! Coast Mountain Photography will endeavour to get at least one image of each athlete which will be available for download and purchase following the race. Official race day photography should be available within 48 hours of the race finish. A link to the online store will be sent out once all of the images are available.

Race Merchandise— Merchandise The North Face has produced a collection of official race merchandise items available for purchase from The North Face booth at package pick up. In addition, race merchandise will be available at The North Face Store in Whistler Village in the weeks leading up to the event. For those who missed out on the pre-sale, a limited number of 2013 custom running socks are available for purchase at package pick up. These socks are $12 (including tax - cash only).
