You may also know that Whistler got its name from the hoary marmots who live among the rocks on the mountains, and who whistle when people approach, alerting the colony to potential danger. They hibernate during the winter, along with the black bears, so you won’t see them this winter visit. But you may be skiing over them while they snooze! You may also know that Whistler always had aspirations of being a host city for the Winter Olympics, a dream that was finally realized in 2010. Those, however, are some just of the highlights. ike most of his high school graduating class in Whistler, Drew Hetherington couldn’t wait to hit the road for “bigger and better things.”

Whistler can be a pretty small town, especially when you’re one of the few who have spent your whole life here. So, he set off for university to pursue a degree in computer engineering. After six months, he was back home. That first uncertain day back in Whistler, Drew took his Level 2 ski instructor’s course, quickly followed by his Level 3 and his Coach’s Level 1, all in the same season. It turns out those “bigger and better things” were right here in Whistler all along. “I had one of my dream jobs by the time I was 22,” he says, of working as a guide for Extremely Canadian, skiing every day in Whistler with the added perks of ski trips around the world. Then, in 2009, Drew got a job offer that would change his course — coaching skier cross for the Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WMSC), a club with almost five decades under its belt developing top ski racers. Think Marielle Thompson, Robbie Dixon, Britt and Michael Janyk. He couldn’t resist, partly because he loved coaching kids but also because this was his chance to see what ski racing was all about first-hand — not every Whistler kid grows up as a ski racer, and Drew spent more time on skates than on skis as a kid.

His decision hasn’t disappointed. “It’s hard to live here if you don’t find something that can help you be here,” he says, of watching people come and go from Whistler over the years, put off by the cost of living and the limited job market. “Often people leave for greener pastures. Through coaching, I’ve been able to find a way to live and work here.” He is now the U12 Lead Coach at the WMSC with 52 kids in his program this year. “I think the most rewarding thing overall is just getting to know the kids on a personal level, being able to work with them, seeing them improve on and off the hill, and then being a part of their lives and watching them grow up as they get older.” The club’s vision is: “Developing Champions in Life and Sport.” What that means exactly, Drew still isn’t sure. But when he sees the success of some of his past students — on skis and in life — he can’t help but smile. “It’s nice to look back and say I was a small part of that cog of making that kid into a full-fledged person.”  15

housands of seasonal employees descend on Whistler every winter to see if North America’s No. 1 ski resort lives up to all the hype.

They arrive fresh-faced and bright-eyed, ready to live like a local for a while — ski 20 cm days, work just to get by, live on Whistler-time. Just imagine, however, if you had just one day, or just one week to see what Whistler Blackcomb (WB) is all about. That’s more than 8,100 acres of in-bounds terrain to explore, more than 200 marked runs, 37 lifts, a recordbreaking gondola. So… where to begin?

Who is Dave Murray and why is the downhill named after him? A:

on the mountains That’s a start — a little hint to whet your appetite. The real trick is just to get out there and explore for yourself. Chat up a local on the chairlift; find a Mountain Host; quiz your server/bartender/bus driver/concierge. These people are the backbone of the community. They know more than anyone else, have had more epic days here than anyone else, and can give you more insight than any guidebook. If you’re looking for an easy way to remember just how much is out there, think of this: Blackcomb Mountain is one vertical mile high. Exactly one mile. That’s 1,609 m (or 5,280 ft) from the top of the mountain to the bottom. And that’s a long way down. Whistler Mountain is marginally smaller, standing at 1,530 m (or 5,020 ft). Whistler opened more than 50 years ago in 1966; Blackcomb is a little younger, opening in 1980. They are connected by one amazing PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, which ferries guests from the alpine of one mountain to the alpine of the other, breaking some world records while it’s at it. So, go forth and find your own “wonder route.” No matter which direction you choose, prepare to be amazed. 

ordic skiing changed Munny Munro’s life. “My goal was to always ski,” he says of his passion for being outdoors on two planks on snow.

“I didn’t know how it was going to evolve but it was this organic, growing process and I really fell in love with the freedom and the movement of being outside, especially out in the Callaghan Valley.” Whistler has always been Munny’s second home; growing up in Vancouver, his parents had a cabin in Creekside and being outdoors was always a part of his life. Twenty years ago he moved to Whistler full-time. In 2007, as the fledging multi-million cross country facility was coming to life in the Callaghan Valley for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Munny was one of a handful of people hired as patrol. He was hooked. “I was the first guy in the Callaghan and the last guy to leave every day. And I loved it so much,” he says, thinking back to the beginning with the Britco trailers and the handful of trails carved in and around the forest. Ten years later, his passion has only deepened and Whistler Olympic Park has evolved into a world-class cross country destination with a beautiful day lodge and a host of activities on offer such as fat biking, toboganning and snowshoeing. Munny’s role has evolved too from patroller to wax tech for the national biathlon team, travelling the world. He now coaches a masters’ class for the local biathlon club as well as kids’ club.

“I’m a Nordic nerd,” he jokes. “I go home and watch Nordic races at night. I study it. I’m a tactician when it comes to technique and style.” Meanwhile, he’s raising a young family in Whistler, and working as a paid on-call firefighter for the fire department. During the winter he skis eight to 10 times a week, on skate skis or classic, depending on the conditions. And the Callaghan keeps him coming back for more — that feeling of the effortless glide on snow, more than 130 km of trails to choose from, the views of the Brandywine, the solitary pursuit, the tired and sore muscles at the end of the day. It comes down to technique, technique, technique, says Munny, and once you hone those skills, it’s smooth and graceful. “Almost like dancing on snow. It’s just amazing. I can’t get enough of it.” 

WHISTLER LIKES TO THINK OF ITSELF as a laidback ski town, a place where you can wear Gore-Tex to dinner, where après is a noun and a verb, where you can sport a goggle tan throughout the spring and still look cool, and where the weather is a constant topic of conversation. While all of that still holds true, it’s been a while since Whistler was “just” a ski town. As the resort has evolved over the last five decades since the first ski lifts started running, so too have the all the things to do around town. You can spend the whole day in the valley and pack it full of adventure: dogsledding and snowshoeing, snowmobiling and bungee jumping, biathlon and ziptrekking, to name just a few.

That’s just Whistler. LOST LAKE PARK Find Lost Lake this winter. The park is located just beyond Whistler Village. Its proximity to the heart of the action means Whistler has a special connection to this forested oasis. There are roughly 30 km of crosscountry trails for all abilities, groomed and maintained throughout the winter. The tracks are set for cross-country but there is ample room for skate skiing too. INSIDER TIP: Check out the Lost Lake trails under the banner of the starry night sky. If possible, the park becomes even more magical skiing at night. There is a 4-km route with lighting.

SKI CALLAGHAN If Lost Lake offers close convenience, a little haven amid the bustle of Whistler life, Ski Callaghan is a vast wilderness destination of stunning proportions. It combines the cachet of Whistler Olympic Park, the Nordic venue during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the wildness and remoteness of Callaghan Country Wilderness Adventures. It is a match made in Nordic skiing heaven. Together the two facilities make up 130 km of Nordic trails. There are loops close to the day lodge for those not wanting to venture too far afield. It takes a bird’s eye view to really appreciate what’s out there — hundreds of thousands of acres of untracked snow. It seems so endless and inaccessible. And yet, it’s all within your reach. It’s just a helicopter ride away. There’s a reason why an estimated 90 per cent of the world’s heli-skiing takes place in British Columbia. And though we could tell you why that is, there simply aren’t enough superlatives in the English language to convey what the heli-skiing experience is all about. This is something that needs to be experienced first-hand to be believed. If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to stand on a mountain all to yourself, wonder no more. If you’ve ever dreamed of first line down a mountain with only your friends in view, dream no more.

Even for seasoned guides, heli-skiing never gets old. In fact, heli-skiing in Whistler is just one of those things: the more you do it, the more you want to do it. There is a simple and perfect pleasure in being part of a small club of skiers and riders, knowing you’re getting whisked to the good stuff. When the in-bounds powder is tracked out, you know you’ll be floating waist-deep over fresh stuff. ou need look no further than the efforts to build three overnight backcountry huts close to Whistler to realize how much skiing has changed beyond the boundaries. In the last decade, the ski industry, relatively flat for the most part, has exploded in the area of backcountry skiing and riding. No longer the domain of the hard-core and elite, the backcountry is now a place for so many. And when you get out there, you soon see why. The beautiful thing about the backcountry in Whistler is that it’s not some far off, fabled land. The backcountry is right on our doorstep, bordering Whistler Blackcomb’s edges and the rest of the resort town, and beckoning to all skiers and riders. While that pristine proximity offers incredible opportunity, it also presents some challenges. Pause for a minute and consider: Do you have a transceiver, a shovel, a probe, and perhaps more importantly, do you know how to use them? Do you have a partner? Do you understand this winter’s snowpack layers? Have you checked the current avalanche conditions for the area? Are you prepared to spend the night outdoors?

These are just some of the things you need to think about when it comes to ducking the ropes and following tracks into the great beyond. Travellers and locals alike have done just that, lured into powder promises by tempting tracks. Many, too, have spent the night outdoors, shivering under the stars, waiting for first light and the chance at rescue from the volunteers in Whistler Search and Rescue. And still others have not been so lucky. This is not an attempt to dissuade people from using the backcountry. Only to say, it’s a massive area, unknown to most, and therein lies its draw and its danger. Consider hiring a guide to take you there. There’s a wealth of knowledge in Whistler’s backcountry community. Consider taking a backcountry clinic or an avalanche training course. And then, get out there and discover a whole new way of enjoying this sport. The journey to the backcountry is a jaw-dropping, experience waiting to be unravelled one skin up at a time. This is an ongoing project that will see a series of three backcountry huts along the popular Spearhead Traverse in Garibaldi Provincial Park on the edge of Whistler’s ski area boundary. This project will offer the first hut-to-hut touring experience on the West Coast and will be open for ski touring in winter and hiking in summer. The first hut has broken ground and work continues.

something a little more civilized, head to Whistler Olympic Plaza in the village where you can rent skates for $6 ($5 for children) and skate for free on the outdoor rink. There’s a roaring fire and the village shops are close by for a coffee or hot chocolate. For those who are willing to walk on the wild side, think about something extraordinary, such as ice climbing. Even beginners can try their hand at this on frozen blue waterfalls and icefalls with experienced guides to lead the way. You can get the feel for climbing high by hitting the indoor gym, The Core, and trying the climbing wall there first. Then again, if looking at chilly water is more your scene than scaling it, you can try a drive to Alexander Falls in the Callaghan Valley to see a spectacular 43 metre waterfall. It’s one of several awesome falls in the area. And for something really off the hook there’s the amazing chance to check out ice caves in the Pemberton Ice Cap. Head north via helicopter onto one of the largest ice fields in the area and explore the natural wonders of the ancient ice caves. The Ice Cap interpretative tour is fully-guided and will leave you wanting more. From dogsledding to tours in ice caves, there is endless choice for deep exploration into the natural world. f you look back in Fern von der Porten’s Grade 10 outdoor education TREK journal, it’s clear this was a teenager on a mission.

“I want to be a doctor in Whistler,” wrote the 15-year-old. “I want to be a ski patrol doctor. I want to work with the national ski team.” And that’s exactly what she did. Spending almost every weekend in Whistler as a kid, and most of the time skiing, Fern knew she wanted a life here, something more than the “weekend warrior” fix. “As a weekender, I always hated leaving on Sundays,” she says. In order to meet her Grade 10 goals, however, Fern had some work to do — 13 years of university to be specific, with an emergency speciality from McMaster University and a sports medicine speciality from the University of British Columbia. In 2007 she was offered her dream job — one of nine full-time doctors in the emergency room at the Whistler Health Care Centre. It was what she had been preparing for her whole life, and, though she had just given birth to her first child, she couldn’t turn it down. “The opportunity to get that job doesn’t come up,” she says. “That’s the job I wanted.” As it turns out, it’s the best job in the world.

“Whenever I get these job recruitment letters in the mail, I don’t even open them because I can’t imagine a better job.” It’s not just the variety of work that comes through the door that makes the job rewarding— the mountain trauma and the front-line, cutting-edge orthopedic work, as well as the regular care of a small town community. It’s also the people she works with — kind, compassionate, hardworking people who care about their patients and their community, many of whom have sacrificed other things to make their lives in Whistler. “People have given up other opportunities and a more affordable lifestyle for what this community has to offer,” she says. Her role as a doctor also extends to the mountains where she volunteers as a patrol doctor on Blackcomb Mountain, an “invaluable program” that fosters strong bonds between the mountain and the health centre. “I feel like it’s a privilege to be involved in so many different lives in intense times” Her home in Whistler, where she and her husband are raising their children, is just a few doors down from her old family cabin. Best of all… she never has to leave on Sundays.  51

THE MEDICAL STAFF at Whistler’s emergency room never know what to exect on any given shift. That’s because while Whistler may be a small town of 11,000 people, there’s nothing really typical about the town or about life here. It’s simply a fact: people play hard in Whistler and, as such, our collective health is an ongoing concern. That’s apparent by the sheer number of health professionals who call Whistler home. After all, this is a place that hosts the longest GS ski race in the world — the annual Peak to Valley Race. Last year, long-time Whistler weekender Owen Owens raced at 91 years old. The Peak to Valley has been a staple in his winter season for three decades. This is what he told Pique Newsmagazine following that race: “That’s what I find so satisfying in the Peak to Valley. It’s always been my attitude that I just want to ski better, to improve my technique, and striving to improve your technique keeps your enthusiasm up.” Whistler knows exactly what he’s talking about — going for it, getting out there, getting better, having fun.

You really don’t have to be hard-core to get that healthy glow. Follow in the footsteps of the Japanese for example, for some Shinrin-yoku which means “forest bathing.” This form of relaxation therapy was developed in the 1980s with the idea that being among the trees has immense health benefits. What is the Peak to Valley Race? A:

CREEKSIDE — where it all began. This is the original ski base. When Whistler Mountain first opened in 1966, Creekside was it. There’s no denying it, there’s still a little old-school charm in this ever-evolving neighbourhood. Creekside is an awesome place to après old-school style, with the added bonus of avoiding the village exodus on the highway as hordes of day skiers hit the road south to Vancouver. This is also a central hub for all your amenities — groceries, booze, coffee, ski rentals, a quick lunch. histler was always a weekend retreat for Heidi Denessen — the place where she grew up skiing as a kid, the place that spoke to her soul as an artist, and her haven from the hustle and bustle of city life as an adult.

Four years ago, however, Heidi, her husband Ron Denessen (a fellow artist) and her two young children, were faced with a decision. Should they buy the family cabin that her parents were selling and set down roots permanently in Whistler and see where the art would take them? They decided to go for it and they haven’t looked back since. Since then, Whistler has played a major role in the evolution of Heidi’s art. “I don’t think that my business would have grown the way it has if I didn’t live in Whistler,” she admits. It’s not just that this is where she draws her inspiration for her fabric prints that she transforms into “wearable art” — yoga pants detailing the Horstman Glacier, or a silk scarf with a local fall trail pattern, or a skirt with a snowy Inukshuk. Whistler is also host to a revolving door of international guests, hoping to take home a little piece of the mountains. “Not everybody is buying original art but they might buy a scarf or a pair of leggings,” Heidi explains. “It’s just a fun way to get the art out there.”

“It’s a steady stream of tourists who want to take something home that’s unique and that’s not made in China,” she says. “That exposure has really boosted my online sales.” Heidi has fallen in love with the entire creative process — of painting, photographing her original artwork, designing it and turning it into something else. She may have honed her art skills at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she met her husband, but the rest is all self-taught. “It’s a really supportive community,” she says of Whistler. “It’s a community of a lot of people who do work for themselves so… they get it.” To get your unique Whistler clothing and art, with free delivery to local hotels and homes, check out the latest autumn/winter collection online at www.heiditheartist. ca. THIS FALL Whistler locals and guests are in for a treat at the Audain Art Musuem. It’s called “Stone and Sky: Canada’s Mountain Landscape.” It’s a special exhibition with more than 100 pieces of art, exploring the beauty and power and richness of Canada’s alpine landscapes. That’s a topic near and dear to the heart of all Whistlerites — capturing, defining and reflecting the unique relationship between man and mountain. This passion for the mountains and mountainlife is reflected throughout town in the art of its people who continually find new and creative ways to illustrate it. It’s there in the colourful canvases hanging in local galleries, in the ski films premiering at the start of the winter season, in the handcrafted local jewellery for sale, in the photography of our nighttime sky. Whistler’s arts scene has come a long way over the years. Today’s vibrant scene is reflected in our winter calendar of events: The Whistler Film Festival, the State of Art exhibit during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, the revolving acts that come to the Maury Young Arts Centre and the comedy acts in the local clubs. Hard to imagine five decades ago that Whistler would one day be home to a beautiful First Nations cultural centre — The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre — or that it would have its own museum and library. Or that it would be the spot for a multi-million art museum, the private collection of philanthropist Michael Audain, reflecting the art of British Columbia over the years. The Audain’s Stone and Sky exhibit opens on Nov. 11 and closes Feb. 26, 2018. The Audain’s permanent exhibit is open year-round — 200 works of art from the 18th century to today. For 17 years Prior has been making handcrafted snowboards from his factory in Function Junction, Whistler’s industrial hub. Whistler proved to be the best testing ground for his product — custom race boards, powder boards, splitboards, and later skis — as Prior constantly refined and perfected the ride. He embraced the local artistic community too calling on artists to submit their original art for his annual TOPSHEET COMPETITION . This year there were 48 entries. In an interview this year with Pique Newsmagazine, Prior said of the topsheet competition: “Every year, we are pleasantly pleased by running it. It’s one of these events that has become a staple in the community. And it’s a lot of fun.” In 2014, Prior Skis and Snowboards won Innovative Business of the Year at the Whistler Chamber of Commerce Excellence Awards. Chris Prior passed away unexpectedly on Sunday Oct. 15 before we had the chance to interview him for his FAQ Insider profile. t’s a long way from Seoul, South Korea to the bucolic Pemberton Valley. And it’s a big change from the cutting-edge world of IT to a small Whistler bakery with a focus on sustainability.

Such is Jen Park’s story. Jen moved to Canada when she was 28 years old. She came from Seoul by way of Tokyo where she had been establishing a career in IT. It wasn’t meant to be. She landed in Vancouver with no friends, no family, one of the oldest and the only international student at cooking school. That didn’t stop her. After graduating and working in the city for a few years, Jen was offered a job at the Bearfoot Bistro. For five years she cut her teeth with the best in Whistler, in a demanding, fast-paced, fine-dining environment. “I think what I learned the best is not actually the recipes or the techniques,” she says. “I learned it’s the way of thinking, the attitude… You never repeat yourself. You always move on, always try something new. That attitude, to keep changing, to never stay where you are, it’s the best thing I ever learned.” A year and a half ago she decided to open her own small bakery in Function Junction. She called it 200 Degrees Bakery, Business has been heating up ever since she opened her doors.

To be fair, Jen is by nature someone who thrives off the precise and the technical. That’s what drew her to the world of pastry and bread making in the first place. She knows, for example, that you need to start with good ingredients like the organic, milled-in-B.C. flour she uses. And she knows that the bread has to reach an internal temperature of 200 F before it’s ready. “But there’s always room to express yourself,” says Jen. So she does. People are paying attention too, especially her captive market in Function Junction looking for her soups and sandwiches and treats. The steep learning curve of payroll and taxes and business licences has tapered off after a year and a half in business. The hours aren’t quite as long, the early mornings not quite as early anymore. Still, there are new challenges and opportunities around every corner like her recent partnership with Root Down Farms in Pemberton and her new location at Nesters Plaza, opening this winter. “There’s something beautiful and different about the small things,” Jen says. “I want to be that small thing.” It’s also nice to know you are finally where you are meant to be — living in Pemberton, working in Whistler, living her dream. 

he way Tim Koshul tells it, he was sitting in a bar in Whistler 10 years ago when his thengirlfriend told him about the famed aprés-ski scene in Sweden. It’s not like Whistler, she said; the Swedes take their après to a whole new level. The comment got Tim thinking: how could he create a scene in Whistler where you could “party like a Swede”? Four years ago, in the seeminglysedate Hilton Whistler Resort, Swedish Afterski was born and once a week throughout the winter season, Whistler parties the afternoon away, the way the Swedes do it. And it goes off, with local band Red Chair (or Röd Stol, to be authentic) setting the scene to their retro tunes — Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones. “It’s the best kept secret in town and I like it that way,” laughs Koshul. “I don’t know where I’d put everybody!” Indeed. There are line-ups out the door every Tuesday afternoon. Tim has a knack for making a good party. He was a standing fixture in the Winnipeg nightclub scene for years before going to Miami and ultimately running the bars for Celebrity Cruises, travelling throughout Europe and the Caribbean.

Then, about 11 years ago, he was in Barcelona and happened to catch a TV show about the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, featuring Whistler, a place he really knew nothing about. He had made his decision by the following morning. He arrived in spring 2006, quickly landed a job as the food and beverage manager at the Hilton, a place that has embraced his après dream. As for that that Swedish girlfriend who planted the seed, she is now his wife and together they are raising their two young girls. No better place to do that than Whistler, he says “That passion that I had to get here… I see it on the faces of kids every season,” Tim says. “Every October I tell the tourists ‘I’m an old guy but I feel like I’m in my twenties again when this youthful excitement shows up again.” Swedish Afterski will kick off every Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Whistler Resort beginning Nov. 21. Expect more this year: more lights, more smoke from the smoke machine, more food, and perhaps a Viking photo booth. Need we say more?  95

FAQ APRÈS INSIDER, Tim Koshul, has been to every après in Whistler. That's part of his job. “There are some amazing après events in this town and I’ve been to them all — The Longhorn, the GLC, the Dubh Linn Gate,” he says. “Everybody has their niche and I think we found ours.”

Afterski is just one part of a whole Whistler après experience that is rated among the best in North America by readers of SKI Magazine. So, what’s the secret to a good après scene? Great music helps. Sustenance is a key ingredient too to keep you going as the sun dips down past the mountains — think beer and nachos. It always helps to throw down the odd glass of water. But perhaps the biggest secret to a killer après is what happens before après — adventure and fun on the mountains. Après is where you get to relive it all over again. Here are a few local tips to get your started: • Head straight to the bar from the mountains — don’t change out of your ski gear • Beware those ski boots when you’re dancing. Ski boots were made for snow, not bar floors. Use caution. • Start early and go as long as you can. But remember — you still want to ski/ride tomorrow. • Sure, “party like a Swede,” as Tim suggests. A: The first commercial fishing lodge opened more than 100 years ago but the skiing didn’t start until 51 years ago, in the winter of 1966. Equally, no one is giving up the goods on their secret pow stashes. We will, however, say this: With more than 8,100 inbounds acres, you’ll get your powder… and then some!

faqs Q: OK. If not where to ski on a powder day, then at least give up the goods on which one is better: Whistler Mountain or Blackcomb Mountain? A: Well, everyone has their favourite. It’s hard to argue Spanky’s Ladder on Blackcomb or first turns down the wide-open Blackcomb Glacier. Then again, what about some of those tree runs off the peak on Whistler and the leg-burning, wholly-satisfying Peak to Creek run from top to bottom. Suffice to say, you’ll have to decide for yourself, and the only way to do that is to get out there and ski both.

Q: Can we skate on the lakes? A: There are five lakes in Whistler — Nita, Alpha, Alta, Lost and Green. Typically, they all freeze over and you’ll see people cross country skiing, playing shinny and walking their dogs across the frozen surface. Make sure conditions are safe before getting on the ice! Every year, it seems, there are stories of people who fall in, even if just up to their knees. You can always play it safe and skate outdoors on the man-made rink at Whistler Olympic Plaza. And it’s free too!

Q: What is the 20 cms rule? A: For diehard locals, this is the only rule to live by in town. If it snows more than 20 cms, that’s carte blanche to go skiing or riding, deadlines be damned! There’s a reason people choose to live in Whistler, they say. This is it!  /faqwhistler

Q: Where are the Inukshuks and what do they mean? A: An Inukshuk is a landmark or a cairn used by the Inuit and other peoples of the Arctic region. In Whistler, the Inukshuk was a symbol of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the image, and the welcome it represents, has endured. There is a big Inukshuk at the entrance of the village. It lights up at night, providing a great backdrop for a photo. There are also a few Inukshuks on the mountains — more great photo opps!

Q: Is WB building a suspension bridge on the peak of Whistler Mountain? A: A suspension bridge is one of the major capital projects in 2017/18. The suspension bridge will run from the top of the Peak Chair, across Whistler Bowl to a rocky outcrop known as the West Ridge. It will be more than 130 m long and could be higher than any other suspension bridge in North America, given that the peak of Whistler Mountain is at 2,182 m (7,160 ft). The suspension bridge is set to open in the spring of 2018.

Q: Do skiers/riders ahead always have the right-of-way? A: They do. It’s written right into the Alpine Responsibility Code that everyone signs before getting a pass. It is your responsibility to avoid the person ahead. Know the 10-point code. 103

faqs Q: Speaking of safety, do you have to wear a helmet while on the mountains? A: No. It’s not mandatory. But WB recommends it for skiing and riding. Plus, everyone else is wearing them. It’s like using a seatbelt here; you just do it.

Q: What if we don’t want to ski or ride? A: Over the last 50 years Whistler has come to terms with the fact that not everyone in the world wants to ski or ride. We may not fully understand it but we accept it. There is so much more to this ski town than skiing. Think snowmobiling, ziptrekking, bungee jumping, yoga, snowshoeing, dogsledding, getting out into nature and soaking up the forest and the fresh air. And let’s not forget… fully relaxing at the spa, eating and drinking just to top off the full experience.

Q: What is the Renaissance project? A: Whistler Blackcomb’s Renaissance

an indoor water adventure centre. It also includes the Blackcomb Adventure Park which has non-skiing outdoor attractions like ziplines. Renaissance is still in the planning stages and has not yet been approved.

Q: How do I find out what’s going on around town while I’m here? A: There are usually friendly Village Hosts out and about in the village, ready to answer your questions. But perhaps the best source of info for what’s going on is picking up free copies of Pique Newsmagazine and The Question, our sister publications.

Q: Is it really true that Whistler, the No. 1 ski resort in North America, is busier in the summer? A: Yes. And you’ll have to come back in the summertime to find out why. Let’s give you a little teaser though. Whistler has the best bike park in the world, not to mention some of the best cross-country mountain bike trails; there are the pristine lakes for swimming and sailing and fishing; there’s hiking over the mountain peaks; and, if that’s not enough, there’s also a full calendar of events and activities to keep everyone entertained.
