endy Robinson had a choice: mountain bike instructor in the new Whistler Mountain Bike Park or an alpine hiking guide. For someone who moved to Whistler for the snowboarding, this was an interesting dilemma — what to do in Whistler in the summertime? “I didn’t want to be a hiking guide,” she shrugs. “By default, I became a mountain bike guide.” Not too many years after that decision, she took first place at the Boneyard Bike Jam (a slopestyle event), securing an invite to the Crankworx Slopestyle the following year. And that pretty much sums up Robinson’s Whistler story to a tee — going for it and finding success. Robinson, who grew up in the Lower Mainland, always had her heart set on Whistler, ever since she first discovered it through the Schools on Snow program in Grade 8. By the time she was in high school, she had a season’s pass and had switched from skiing to snowboarding. She began travelling by bus to Whistler as much as possible, her mom calling the old Shoestring Lodge hostel at the Boot Pub so she had a place to sleep.

“I didn’t have a credit card and I was underage so my mom would have to call and say it was OK,” recalls Robinson. She graduated high school, did the requisite travelling and some university but Whistler was always in the cards. Her first job was as a rental technician at Whistler Blackcomb (WB). It would be the first of many jobs as she’s worked her way up through the company these last 20 years — coaching, guiding, managing snow school and ultimately landing the position of business development manager. The job is all about exploring new opportunities, from working with third party operators who use WB’s tenure to overseeing large-scale projects like the new peak suspension bridge. Whistler has lived up to all her expectations — professional and personally. It doesn’t get much better than those few sublime trifecta days every year — snowboarding in the alpine, mountain biking in the valley, swimming in the lakes. “The lifestyle here is awesome,” says Robinson. “I really think that this place is the fountain of youth.” 15

SKIING/SNOWBOARDING: The winter season never seems to end as skiing kicks off on the glacier on Blackcomb until mid-July. This is a hot-spot for summer camps but it’s open to the public too for anyone who wants to glide on snow in their T-shirts and sunscreen. HIKING: Whistler Blackcomb’s lift system has opened up the alpine for hiking to all. There are so many routes to choose

from whether it’s a fast and easy green loop or a more challenging journey further afield. You’ll hike past alpine lakes and ancient glaciers, through alpine meadows that may be in bloom. Bring a picnic, bring your trail map, bring sturdy footwear.
BEAR VIEWING: Whistler is home to roughly 60 resident black bears who like to feed on the slopes. This is the only population in B.C. that has been studied for more than two decades so we know a lot about them. Get up close (but not too close!). PEAK 2 PEAK: This one doesn’t really need an introduction. It’s a breath-taking gondola ride stretching high over the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. The views from this gondola never get old.

f you asked Matt van der Horst what he was going to do when he got older, there’s no way the Port Moody native would have come up with: general manager and partner of a bungee jump company.
But in the summer of 2002, as he was backpacking around Europe, his dad called to say Whistler Bungee was a go; the bridge was officially open and ready for jumpers. It was time to come home and run the new family business. “It was something that I never expected our family to do,” smiles van der Horst. “It’s just so off the radar.” From the early years when it was really a summertime operation to a year-round business doing up to 18,000 jumps every year—the busiest, by far, in North America—Whistler Bungee has surpassed all expectations. “We’re just lucky we found the perfect setting here,” he adds, of the 91 metre (300 ft.) steel bridge spanning the Cheakamus River, tucked in the forest just south of Whistler. With about 750 jumps to his name, van der Horst is no stranger to the gamut of emotions that comes on the bungee bridge—the paralyzing terror, the determination to stare down fear, the absolute jubilation after the jump. It’s all very raw and primal. “It’s so unique; there’s such a quick transition from being so afraid to being so happy,” says van der Horst. “There are very few places in the world that offer this product and I think Whistler is a perfect place to showcase it.”

Now a married father of two, van der Horst has gone from living in Whistler in the summers to moving here full-time to raising his family here. And while Whistler Bungee is much busier in summer compared to winter, van der Horst says there’s nothing that quite beats a calm bluesky day after a snowstorm when the Cheakamus River takes on a blue/ golden colour and the only sound in the forest is the rushing river. There is one job hazard, however, in the company with the perfect safety record: there’s a perception out there that if you jump naked, it’s free. “We get that question a lot,” admits van der Horst. The answer is a simple: You still pay. But, it’s worth every penny. 19

CONSIDER BEFORE LEAVING: The 18 km round-trip hike to the lake and back takes roughly five to seven hours through moderate hiking terrain with 820 metres of elevation gain. Along the way, you’ll hike through the forest as well as alpine meadows which could be in full bloom, depending on the time of the year. There are campsites at the lake but it’s a good idea to make a reservation.

here are few sites more welcoming than a shining alpine lake at the end of a long hike — an oasis high in the mountains. Such is Garibaldi Lake located in Garibaldi Provincial Park. This is arguably one of the most scenic alpine spots in a place renowned for its alpine beauty so don’t forget your camera.

What causes the turquoise colour of the lake? A:

The colour is caused by “rockflour” or glacial flour. This is sediment from the glacier. The sediment is suspended in the water and it absorbs and scatters the sunlight, which makes the water bright blue. Don’t be fooled by the Caribbean colour. Garibaldi Lake is chilly!
Garibaldi Lake lies 1,500 metres (4,900 ft.) above sea level, approximately 19 km south of Whistler. The massive turquoise waters (the lake is almost 10 square km) are surrounded by mountains, volcanoes and glaciers, most notably Sphinx Glacier. Along the northwestern shore, you’ll find the aptly-named Battleship Islands, a series of lava outcrops, rising out of the water like a naval advance. From Garibaldi Lake there are more hiking trails to Black Tusk and Panorama Ridge, each with unbelievable views and surroundings. The whole area is a pristine backcountry wonderland ready for exploration. Black bears, mountain goats, deer, marmot and pikas all call Garibaldi Provincial Park home as well as bird species such as golden eagles, bald eagles and ptarmigan.

elcome to Whistler’s parks — not to be confused with its terrain parks, skateboard park or the bike parks. Just your average, run-of-the-mill parks. Except in Whistler, there’s nothing run-of-the mill about the local parks. There are 31 parks in town. Yes, that’s correct – 31 parks. That includes the little neighbourhood parks dotted throughout the valley as well as the big destination parks. This is where you’ll find the people of Whistler in the summertime when they’re not on the trails or on the mountains. There are endless things to do at the local parks — canoe, kayak, swim, walk the dog, hit the playgrounds, slackline (use the slackline posts, not the trees), chill, BBQ, picnic, beach volleyball, build a sandcastle, watch the sun rise, bask in the afternoon alpenglow. Like the locals, you’ll have your favourite park before too long. The Valley Trail can get you to most parks, by foot or by bike. The popular food truck program will be back again this summer, setting up at Rainbow Park, Lakeside Park and Lost Lake Park from June 30 to September 3. The local lakes are another hotspot in the summertime. There are five valley lakes: Green Lake, Alta Lake, Lost Lake, Alpha Lake, and Nita Lake. They may be chillier than you’re used to but don’t let that stop you! You’ll find even more lakes further afield. 35

ost people don’t work in a job where they can say everyone is always happy to see them; Robin Jewers can.
Jewers is one of two lead therapists at the Four Seasons Resort Whistler spa. Part of her job as a massage therapist is helping people heal. “I think there’s something super important about human touch,” says Jewers of the work she does with clients from around the world. “Not enough people get enough human touch.” And she gets something in return too: “Helping somebody else heal is super healing for me as well.” Of course, this was never supposed to be a full-time gig. The plan was to do one season in the mountains to learn how to snowboard, says the Halifax native. “I thought I was coming here for six months. The spring came and then the summer came and I thought ‘it’s amazing.’ So I just kept repeating it.” That was 13 years ago. She can still remember looking at the mountains when she first arrived and thinking: What have I gotten myself into? This was far cry from the slopes at Martock, outside Halifax, where she first tried snowboarding. It was, she says, humbling. But that didn’t stop her.

Not long after she arrived she got a volunteer job at Whistler Blackcomb as a mountain host. Pretty soon she was linking turns on her board. And in more recent years, the mountains have become a summer playground on her mountain bike. Humbling, to be sure, but exhilarating and life-affirming too. Admittedly, there have been moments over the years where she has thought about leaving. A few years ago she completed a six-week yoga teacher training course in Bali and she wondered if perhaps she should settle somewhere else, somewhere warm. And then she got on the Sea to Sky highway on her way back to Whistler and it all just fell into place again with a new perspective. “I need to be in the mountains,” she says, of the revelation. “This is where home is.” 51

A
fter his first five years owning and operating a store in one of the prime spots in Whistler Village, Scott Grieve felt like he had gone through the rigours of an MBA program. After another few years, he felt like he had a PhD. There’s nothing quite like doing business in Whistler, no guidebook to prepare for the ebbs and flows of resort retail, the highs and lows of seasonal hiring. So for Grieve, who was 29 years old when he bought the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, the move was a baptism of fire of sorts, learning everything from the ground up, from making fudge and paying the bills to managing staff and ordering product. Nothing in his geography degree from the University of Victoria had really prepared him for it. “I think you’ve got to go with what makes you happy,” says Grieve. “I knew I needed skiing and biking in my life and I knew that Whistler had everything from the lifestyle perspective that I needed.” Grieve had been coming to Whistler since he could walk, learning to ski on Rainbow Mountain in the late 70s. “It seemed like every chance we had we came to Whistler,” he reminisces.
As Whistler gets busier and days are filled catering to resort guests, he remains hands-on in his business in every way. It’s so important, he says, to remember why you choose to live here. “I consider myself lucky that I live in Emerald,” he says, referring to Whistler’s northernmost neighbourhood. “The second I hit Green Lake and I can see alpenglow on the mountains, I can sort of relax and go ‘OK, that’s why I’m here.’” 58

After the unforgettable 1998-99 ski season, one of the snowiest on record, Grieve set his mind to making his life here full-time—skiing in the winter, mountain biking in the summer. His uncle owned a hot tub company and put him to work. After three years, he was ready to put down more permanent roots and the chocolate store at the base of the mountains was quietly up for sale—an interesting choice for the guy without much of a sweet tooth.

rianna Beacom can’t decide: How do you choose a favourite from among almost 200 pieces of renowned B.C. art?
When she first took on the role of associate director of operations at the Audain Art Museum (AAM) more than a year ago, Beacom had a ready answer — one of the Rodney Graham’s, she says, before quickly qualifying her answer to include the work of Jeff Wall and Stan Douglas — all Vancouver photographers featured at the museum. That made sense for the Ryerson University grad who has a degree in fine arts focused on photography. Then, Beacom took a tour with a new docent. “She had me focus on the (Frederick) Varley’s,” she says of the work of the Group of Seven artist. “I hadn’t given the Varley’s the time and attention that they deserved and I left the galleries with my new favourite.” It’s called Dusk — Tantalus Range. “It glows from the inside,” says Beacom, then pauses to consider her answer. “But now the Lawren Harris is back and that’s also a favourite of mine. So to choose one is almost impossible!”

This is perhaps one of the job hazards of working at the AAM but Beacom isn’t complaining. Instead, she feels uniquely fortunate to have found her professional niche in a place where career jobs aren’t that easy to come by. For the last several months she has stepped up to the plate, temporarily filling in the museum’s biggest role as interim acting director. It’s turns out Whistler is the ultimate inspirational place for a smalltown Ontario girl with big city aspirations. A self-described creative “dabbler” in anything from painting to pottery, Beacom’s work in arts and culture began with a job at Arts Whistler, starting as the front of house administrator. After five years, and five job titles, she had worked her way up to the general manager’s role. And then came the opportunity at the AAM that she couldn’t turn down. “It was as beautiful and as mind-blowing as I expected it to be,” she says. Almost like that propitious move to Whistler more than a decade ago. “Whistler’s been good to me,” she says. “I’ve been very fortunate to not only live in a place that I love but actually have a career in the arts and culture sector.” 73

More than just bikes Y
ou could be forgiven for thinking Crankworx — the renowned mountain bike festival born and bred in Whistler and now in three more stops around the world — was all about how fast and high you can go on a bike. It’s not. Far from it. As it has evolved these past 15 years, Crankworx has embraced the storytelling side of mountain biking — the photographers and the filmmakers. The result? Arts and culture have a big presence at the 10-day festival, which takes place this year in Whistler August 10-19.
Not to be outdone by the photographers, the filmmakers and athletes also take centre stage in Dirt Diaries. Teams of riders and videographers showcase their skills and their love of the sport in a short come experience Whistler’s unique history!

Crankworx likely took its cues from its winter predecessor — the World Ski and Snowboard Festival (WSSF), which has always had a major arts and music component reflecting Whistler’s deep-rooted ski culture. Though Whistler may be a ski and bike town at heart, the arts and culture of those sports have always played a significant role in our collective conscience. And it doesn’t end there. The Whistler Film Festival, billed as “the coolest film fest in North America”, has deep roots in the community as does the Whistler Writers Festival. In more recent years, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) has been coming to Whistler to play free outdoor concerts over the Canada Day long weekend. The VSO also offers a summer institute for young musicians. So while summertime visitors may come for the double black trails and the biggest bike park in the world, we like to think they stay a little longer because Whistler is so much more than an awesome place to ride bikes. epe Barajas has big dreams. He envisions a day when his La Cantina taquerias will be in cities and towns across Canada, bringing an authentic taste of Mexico to the North.
He’s off to a good start, with two locations of the urban-style taco joints in Whistler, among his other business ventures, and another La Cantina location in downtown Vancouver. And to think: 10 years ago he had to google “Whistler” before accepting a job at a local hotel. Coming from a bustling career, travelling the world with Princess Cruises, laid-back Whistler wasn’t really his style. “It was slow,” Barajas groans at the memory of his first impression of Whistler. “I’m from Mexico City. I come from a family of entrepreneurs. Everything is fast. Everything needs to happen right away.” And yet, he soon realized that Whistler was a town of untapped business potential; the more he got to know it, the more intrigued he became, especially when he realized there were service gaps in the marketplace. “I’m passionate about business,” he says. “It’s a world that fascinates me.” His first venture was in 2011 with Clean Perfect Services, a cleaning company specializing in luxury properties. The following year he opened The Mexican Corner, his more upscale restaurant offering a little piece of delicious Mexican food in the heart of the resort.

Its success paved the way for La Cantina, the original taqueria, and things have snowballed ever since. He now has 150 employees throughout his various operations. “What I love the most about Whistler is just the sense of belonging, which I never had in Mexico City,” he says. Barajas always brings a little Mexican flare to the table, more often than not dressed in a suit with polished shoes, ready to make deals. Only now… he feels like a local. “I can’t see myself living anywhere else but here.” 79

hen you have a town that boasts more than 170 places to eat or drink, it’s difficult to pick out some highlights. Almost every place in Whistler has something to recommend it; if not the award-winning, locally sourced food, then the ambiance or the views.
But, it’s hard to beat the views from the top of the mountain when you’re dining at 6,000 feet. The Mountain Top Summer Feast takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night throughout the summer. Take the gondola to the top and take in the views from the Roundhouse patio. We would be remiss when speaking about patio dining not to mention some of the amazing Village patios where you can watch the world stroll by as you dine. Or try the patios overlooking the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and soak in the tricks and turns of Whistler’s favourite summer trade. Dinner conversation will not flag! 80

Dobson has a new vantage point to watch over Whistler’s après shenanigans. He is the general manager of Handlebar Café and Après, located in a small hole-in-the-wall in the Upper Village. Dobson has had a hand in creating the unique Handlebar experience with fresh, local craft beer at the heart of the operations. “Handlebar was born with a vision of bringing the booming B.C. craft beer market up to speed in Whistler,” he says.“No one had made the full commitment to craft beer and we thought the time was right.” The timing, in fact, has been perfect. Dobson moved to Whistler from Chilliwack fresh out of high school in 1999. He got a job teaching snowboarding. Not long afterwards, he traded his snowboard for skis and began working in Whistler’s food and beverage industry.
After almost 20 years catering to the partying resort crowd, Dobson says it’s a welcome change to be out of the hustle and bustle of the Village. The Upper Village isn’t like it used to be; empty store fronts are now filled and there’s a new energy in the air with people enjoying the relaxed pace. Handlebar has had a role in that transformation, the aqua blue patio umbrellas drawing people in. “It’s been a bit of a cursed location,” admits Dobson. “But I think it was just missing good beer and the right vibe.” To see what’s pouring on tap today, head to handlebar.beer 94

histler’s après scene is starting to taste a little different these days. Where once nachos and beer were the order of après, our tastes are becoming a little more refined of late. Has après been overrun with craft beer, organic spirits, and high-end charcuterie? Well, we wouldn’t go that far! But one look at HandleBar in the Upper Village (read our Insider Nick Dobson) is a sure sign that things never stay the same, even an age-old tradition like après. There’s no doubt that the craft beer revolution is happening right on our doorstep. As with the rest of the country, the popularity of craft beer is gaining momentum. Whistler, town of 12,000 permanent people, now has three craft breweries to its name — the Brewhouse in the Village, and Whistler Brewing and Coast Mountain Brewing, both in Function Junction. All have great après vibes not to mention the delicious, brewed-in-Whistler beer. While we’re on the subject on homemade beverages, at après or at any other time, half an hour north on the highway is the 10-year-old Pemberton Distillery, a craft distillery turning out Schramm Vodka and Schramm Gin, among other creations. The vodka and gin are produced from Pemberton’s organic potatoes, which is saying something given that Pemberton is also called “Spud Valley,” renowned for its seed potatoes. But whether it’s with nachos or charcuterie, standard suds or craft beer, Whistler’s commitment to the spirit of après remains: Celebrating another great day in the mountains with friends. 96

WB’s history — also include upgrading the Emerald Express chairlift from a four-person lift to a six-person lift; and the Catskinner chair will also be replaced with a high-speed lift.
