F
rom the Pyrenees Mountains of Andorra to the Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua, New Zealand, Finn Iles has biked it all. At 19 years old, mountain biking has taken him around the world, dominating the downhill World Cup circuit as a junior before moving into the men’s division last year. Still, nothing beats riding in Whistler. “I wish I was at home riding right now,” he admits, as the season begins to change in the Sea to Sky corridor from ski season to bike season and the trails start to shed their snow. Iles is now based in Victoria for part of the year, where he is in his first year at the University of Victoria, but “home” remains Whistler. When Iles was in Grade 4, a young ski racer and biker with a lot of promise much like his older brother, the Iles family decided to move to Whistler to take advantage of the mountains and all Whistler had to offer. It was a decision that has shaped the course of Iles’ life. “I don’t know if there’s much of a secret,” says Iles of his success, which ultimately led him to hang up his race skis at 15 to focus on biking. “Everything was available to me to make the most of my sport.”
In 2016 and ‘17 Iles was the Junior DH Overall World Champion. He compares the move from junior to men’s elite much like the move from junior hockey to stepping onto NHL ice—bigger, faster, more experienced players and inevitably the stakes are higher. “I think it’ll take a couple of years to get really used to racing all these guys,” he says of the 19-35-year-old elite division. Last year he finished 15th. As the season sets up this summer with the first World Cup in the mountains above Maribor in Slovenia, Iles has got his eye on the Top 10 or a Top 5 overall finish this year. Whistler will be home base between races. “I don’t want to live anywhere else,” he says. “I just can’t see anywhere being better.” 14

Whistler, with its extensive trail network and the biggest bike park in the world, was his backyard. Iles rode as much as he could, worked hard, and honed his mental game. It remains his mantra today.

The bike park caters to all levels from beginners to pros. CLOUDRAKER SKYBRIDGE: This is the suspension bridge everyone’s been talking about. The 130-metre bridge spans from the top of the Peak Chair to the West Ridge, high over Whistler Bowl. At the end of the bridge is the Raven’s Eye Cliff Walk, a cantilevered walkway that extends more than 12 m.

MAY-JUNE SNOW WALLS: For a limited period of time giant snow walls command the way at Pika’s Traverse on Whistler Mountain. The walls are carved out of winter snowfall providing a white labyrinth to guide you to the alpine. Don’t be fooled though; these snow walls, giant as they may be, do not last forever!
JUNE-JULY SUMMER SKIING/RIDING: One of the reasons Whistler Blackcomb can boast about its epically long season is its summer snow. The Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb Mountain is the place to be for skiers and riders from June 8-July 14. There are summer camps taking place on the glacier but it’s open to the public too for anyone who wants to slide on snow in a T-shirt. Do not forget your sunscreen.

AUGUST WILDFLOWERS: Just like the giant snow walls, there is a limited window of opportunity to experience the kaleidoscope of colour from the alpine wildflowers in all their glory. Stay tuned to the weather to ensure you don’t miss the summer weeks when the alpine turns purple, crimson and yellow. CRANKWORX: The biggest mountain bike festival in the world is something to behold. Follow the crowds to Whistler Mountain and find a spot where you can take in all the action. 17

The Ascent Trails take hikers on an uphill climb from the base of the mountain to the Rendezvous, clocking in at more than 6 kilometres. The path winds through the rainforest to open meadows with wooden bridges and stairs to guide you along the way. With the trailhead in the heart of the 18

ancouver has the iconic Grouse Grind and now Whistler has the Blackcomb Ascent Trails. This series of three connected trails—Little Burn, Big Burn and Heart Burn—is open again this summer after a one-year hiatus during the construction of the multi-million Blackcomb Gondola and Whistlerites can’t wait to get back to the climb.

Upper Village, at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, many locals tackle the ascent Trails multiple times throughout the summer, trying to best their previous times. It can be an unrelenting climb at times but the view from the deck of the Rendezvous is worth it. Perhaps one of the best things of all, aside from the wildflowers, the whistling marmots and the exercise, is the return journey to the base via the gondola, saving those knees from the long walk down to the valley. This is a must-do experience. If the hike gets too hard along the way, you can always hop on the gondola at mid-station and ride the rest of the way to the top.

ndrew Bradley knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life as soon as he took his first helicopter ride at 15 years old. He was going to fly helicopters.
Flight school followed, then jobs in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes, doing scenic tours, moving gold drills for mining companies and working for forestry companies. The mountains, however, were calling. “I knew I wanted to come west,” says Bradley. It’s where he ultimately met his wife Helen, started a family, and made his home in Whistler. In 2005 he landed a job at Blackcomb Helicopters where he is now operations manager for the company with a stellar safety and customer service reputation. After 30 years in the business, Bradley has this to say of flying machines: “It never gets old.” That much is obvious as he describes Blackcomb Heli’s BC Experience Tour, flying over Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, seeing the black bears grazing on the slopes, heading south to the iconic Black Tusk rising up from the Coast Mountains in stark contrast to the dazzling snow of the Cheakamus Glacier. The tour lands on Rainbow Mountain with breathtaking views across the valley.

“Tourism is growing at probably of rate of 15 to 20 per cent a year for us as we start to develop products and fine-tune them,” says Bradley of the growing appeal of exploring far-flung places and seeing the world from on high. His job is nothing if varied. On any given day, Bradley and the drivers at Blackcomb Heli could be fighting fires (sometimes as far away as Ontario) or flying machines for utility and mining companies; they guide tourists on scenic tours; they fly for blockbuster movies (Bradley filled in as Christian Grey, filming the crash scene in 50 Shades Darker.) His favourite job, however, is flying heliskiers to fresh powder in the backcountry—the snow, the sun, the adrenalin. It doesn’t get much better than that. Most people, says Bradley, change their job several times over the course of their life. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”He’s flown in every province, save one. He has safely landed a machine in Yellowknife after the engine failed in the air. He’s travelled the world from the high Arctic to South America to South Africa. He pauses and smiles: “It’s been quite a ride.” 21

t’s one thing if you’re our Activities Insider Andrew Bradley (see page 20) and can fly a helicopter to the top of Rainbow Mountain in style, without breaking a sweat. It’s quite another thing when you have to get there on your own steam, steadily tackling the uphill climb one step at a time. Whatever your method of travel, it’s worth the journey to the top.

DID YOU KNOW? For more than a decade (1969-1981), Rainbow Mountain had its own lift-accessed skiing—a 422-metre tow-lift. Hard to compete with the brandnew lifts going in on Whistler Mountain at the time but with reasonable rates and a small local crowd, Rainbow quickly became a good place to learn how to ski and have fun.
perspective of the valley below. For many, the hike ends at Rainbow Lake, a pristine alpine lake, sprinkled with wildflowers if you happen to visit at the right time (typically for a few weeks every year in August). There is also the option of exploring further afield too.
• 5-8 hours on the trail, depending on speed/ fitness
The trailhead is easy to spot on Alta Lake Road with a big wooden sign and parking. The hike begins through the West Coast rainforest on the way to Rainbow Falls. From there, follow the steep watershed forest service road, passing the Flank Trail along the way. This section is guaranteed to get the blood pumping. Once you get back into the forest, the trail begins to even out about one-third of the way along, with the forest gradually opening up to the alpine as you knock off vertical metres. The trail is typically wellmaintained with raised wooden bridges along the way. Once you get to the lake, don’t be tempted to go for a dip; this lake is in Whistler’s watershed and swimming is not permitted. There is also no camping here and no dogs allowed. From the lake, you can explore a little further afield to Madeley, Beverley and Hanging lakes or turn around and head back down to the valley.
• Moderate hike but keep in mind the long distance and the steady elevation gain
The Rainbow Lake trail is a good workout, a beautiful hike in the West Coast backcountry and a great way to see Whistler from another vantage point.

histler is often accused of being too hardcore, too double black, too gnarly for regular folk but take heart: There are pockets of green trails leading to blues, havens for families and begintermediates, who just want to get out there and feel a part of the scene.

TRAILFORKS TRAILMAPPS Interpretive Forest, running alongside the rushing waters of the Cheakamus River. Take the north side of the river (Farside Trail), for the rolling climb, rated green. The trail leads to the MacLaurin’s Crossing suspension bridge where you can cross to the other side of the river and follow the trail (Riverside Trail) back down. These trails are multi-use and trail users can go in either direction. The Riverside trails are also the first step to more biking and hiking trails in the area— like climbing the Westside Main Road to get to LSD, another green downhill, or taking on some more challenging routes like HIHI and High Side and the aptly-named See Colours and Puke. even years ago Chris Pelz was so convinced in the potential of medical marijuana that he was ready to go “all-in” and take a risk when others remained skeptical. And so, Pelz, along with his wife Angela, sold their Whistler home, borrowed money, and got a license from Health Canada to produce medical marijuana, one of the first in the country to do so. Whistler Medical Marijuana was born with one distinct detail that set it apart from other medical marijuana producers.
“At (Angela’s) insistence we decided that Whistler Medical Marijuana would be a certified organic producer,” recalls Pelz, a decision which dovetailed nicely with their new Whistler organic grocery store, Olives.
Every gram produced at Whistler Medical Marijuana is sold, with demand far surpassing its limited production. “It commands a premium price but that’s because everything is done by hand,” says Pelz. It wasn’t long before others took note. Late last year, Aurora Cannabis, one of the world’s largest cannabis companies, made a multi-million-dollar offer they couldn’t refuse. Pelz is confident the move will catapult Whistler Medical Marijuana to a global medical brand. He will remain at the helm for the next two to five years. “I have a fundamental belief that cannabis-based medicine will become extremely important in the medical field over the next 20 years,” says Pelz. Pelz’s early career in Whistler wasn’t entrepreneurial. He arrived from Toronto in 1993 and worked his way up to become project manager for the real estate development arm of Intrawest (owner of Whistler Blackcomb at the time) while the company was in its hey-day developing projects in Whistler. When it was sold in 2007, Pelz was on the lookout for new opportunities. As for going “all-in” Pelz says: “This town is filled with all-in people, whether that’s in sports or in seeking adventure or in business. That’s who we are by nature—risk takers.” 52

It was a bumpy beginning, with police escorts to the dump to throw out a lot of weed. But by 2015 Pelz’s team had managed to consistently produce organic crops that were successful through the rigorous testing process. The company expanded its Function Junction base to a 63,000 square foot purpose-built facility in Pemberton.

even years ago, Australian transplant Liz Caruso attended an empowerment conference that changed the course of her life. It forced her to really think about creating the kind of life she wanted to live in Whistler. So she asked herself this: What does Whistler need? What is something that no one else is doing or something that exists but that she could do better? The answer was staring her in the face: a fashion shoe store. Who better to deliver that than someone who knew the shoe business intimately after working at Footlocker for 14 years? Eight months after that fateful conference, Soles of Whistler was born. It’s still going strong six years later. It was a daunting path at first but Caruso kept this one thought in mind: “To lose fear, gain knowledge.” She got to work and made it happen. “Suddenly this cloudy thing, like opening a business, becomes so clear,” she says.
With seven years’ experience at Footlocker in Australia, she applied to work at the Village location and within two months she was managing the store. Little did she know it then but she was laying the groundwork for Soles: learning how to train and manage people, how to create and read financial reports, how to sell shoes. Caruso’s entrepreneurial spirit remains strong: she is a nail tech with a full-time roster of appointments for sculptured gel and acrylic nails. She is also a part-time fitness instructor and personal trainer at Meadow Park Sports Centre. Soles of Whistler, however, is her passion. “This is the thing that I’m most proud of,” she says. “If you really want to create a life in Whistler you need to look for opportunities.” Soles of Whistler is located in the Westin Resort & Spa. 60

arah Sladen is just as at home trawling through busy flea markets in Paris as she is in the peaceful mountains of Whistler. There, she’s on the hunt for tarnished old war medals or longforgotten sporting medals or 17th century skeleton keys. She calls them “treasures,” beautiful keepsakes she can breathe new life into as part of necklaces or bracelets when she returns home. “That whole process of looking and finding things is what I love,” she says, pulling back the door in her home studio and revealing her beloved collections of heart rocks and skeletons and other treasures she’s collected from beaches and forests and mountains since she was a girl. It took a while, however, before she realized she could make her living from doing what she loved. First came a career in nursing, a corporate job in clinical research, then a family. And then a pivotal move to Whistler 15 years ago.

Whistler had always been a home away from home for Sladen, spending winter weekends and holidays here since Whistler Mountain opened for skiing in 1965. So it was an easy choice when she and her husband were trying to get off the treadmill of a busy city life. The couple quickly realized: “Whistler is what life is about.” The jewellery business, Sass Designs, was a natural evolution to that new and unexpected life trajectory. “Things happen when you’re open to accept them,” Sladen says with a smile. “I love the creative side of it. It’s so much more flexible than my other life and it’s refreshing to be using the creative side of my brain again.” Sass Designs began with beaded wraparound bracelets that were an instant hit among friends. It has grown now to earrings and necklaces and sales have stretched across the globe. The process was slow-going and expensive at first. Take her popular Sami bracelets. The materials are shipped from a tiny town on the edge of the Arctic Circle in Sweden—reindeer leather, antler and silver pewter thread, which is then braided, and sewn together with invisible thread. The process is all hand done. “Sewing leather is not easy. You get faster and you figure it out,” she says of the intricate process. “It’s a labour of love.” 77

eat pies are to Australians what poutine is to Canadians—a little taste of home, even tastier perhaps when you’re far from home. That’s why when Kerri Jones arrived here 10 years ago for a ski season, she wasn’t only shocked by the number of Australians living in Whistler, she was also surprised there was no pie shop to feed them. “They’re an Australian staple,” says the Newcastle native. “That’s what everyone grew up on—that plain meat pie.” Her winter season turned into a summer season and not long after, she met her husband Alex. More seasons in Whistler ensued. So, to satisfy Kerri’s meat pie cravings, Alex found recipes online and starting making them at home. One thing led to another—a dream to put down more permanent roots in Whistler morphed into a business plan. Next they signed a lease for a small shop in Village and spent countless hours preparing for the opening day of Peaked Pies.

They had no staff, Jones recalls. Their plan was that she would work the front, Alex would work the back. Who could have predicted there would be a line up out the door that first day? That was five years ago and they haven’t looked back since. Two years ago a second Peaked Pies opened in Vancouver and now they have their sights set on another location. Meanwhile, their family has grown too, with a new baby part of the mix and those Whistler roots taking an even firmer hold. Through the whirlwind five years, they’ve stayed focused on the task at hand—delivering hand-made pies with quality ingredients such as imported grass-fed butter and AA Alberta steak. That traditional plain meat pie—meat, gravy and onions—remains a staple on the menu with a sophisticated Whistler twist: mashed potatoes standing in for snowy mountain peaks with the option of mushy peas and gravy. “Every single pie is individually hand-pressed, hand-filled,” says Jones. “So there is a lot of labour and a lot of love that goes into our pies.” Grab Peaked Pies, and a little taste of Australia, at Creekside Market and at Nesters in the deli sections and, of course, where it all began at its home base on Main Street in the Village. 81

“It was meant to be a special for a couple of months to make people talk but everyone loved it so much…we’ve had to bring it back permanently,” says Jones. When you think of the number of Aussies who call Whistler home for a season or two, or for life, it makes sense that you can grab a kangaroo pie on the go here. 82

Whistler still has what we call “shoulder seasons,” that period of time in between our two main seasons—ski season and bike season. Shoulder seasons come with great deals at the local restaurants. oast Mountain Brewing can barely keep up with the demand for its craft beer, brewed in Whistler. The company, not yet three years old, is at capacity, selling out every day. Keep in mind, the beer is only sold in Whistler. It’s admittedly not a bad problem to have, says owner Kevin Winter, as he works to ensure he keeps thirsty and discerning customers happy. Winter has no interest in manufacturing the beer in a far-off factory; that’s not what Coast Mountain Brewing’s story is all about. “I’m a chef of beer,” he says from the offices of the Function Junction tap house. “I want to see, touch, taste, handle and brew our own recipes. I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to let that go. “We’ll expand when the company allows it to.” Winter grew up in North Vancouver, spending many weekends skiing in Whistler, and moved here full-time when he was 20. “Whistler always had a certain feeling of existing in the moment—the here and now—and I was really drawn to that,” he says.
“Our focus has always been….as long as the beer is good, everything else will fall into place,” he says. As it turns out, the beer is good. You may not like all of the varying beers on tap but Winter wants you to open your mind to colour and flavour and to the experience of it all. Coast Mountain Brewing’s tap house is a 3,000 square foot facility in Function Junction, a gathering place for locals and summer mountain bikers and tourists alike. “We’re thankful the community has embraced us and we feel we have created a strong brand that connects us with the community,” says Winter. “Whistler is a large part of our success story.” 94

He worked his way up through Whistler’s hospitality sector, managing pubs and bars by night and skiing by day. After meeting his wife, the couple began to hone their passion for beer, home brewing and watching closely as the craft beer revolution began to gain steam south of the border. They set the stage for Coast Mountain Brewing with Winter going to school and working in the commercial brewing industry outside of Whistler to gain experience.

f you want to know more about Whistler—the best restaurants, the best hikes, the best deals—all you have to do is ask! The locals are a friendly bunch and we’ve been asked every conceivable question over the years so don’t be shy. Here are a few answers to some things you may be wondering about.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: WHAT’S NEW THIS SUMMER? A: We’re still recovering from all
the new adventures that opened last summer. Whistler Blackcomb opened its Cloudraker Skybridge over the peak of Whistler Mountain last summer. It’s a 130-metre suspension bridge overlooking the white-capped Coast Mountains and has been known to sway in the wind! Meanwhile, in the valley, Vallea Lumina transformed the night forest into a kaleidoscope of light and music at Cougar Mountain, a multi-media experience in the trees unlike anything ever seen before in Whistler.

Q: ARE THE BLACKCOMB ASCENT TRAILS OPEN AGAIN THIS YEAR? A: Yes! Temporarily closed last year
for the construction of the new multi-million Blackcomb Gondola, the Ascent Trails are open again this year for those willing to make the trek up the mountain. The Ascent Trails are Whistler’s answer to the Grouse Grind with the starting point at the base of Blackcomb Mountain in the Upper Village. Read more in the On the Mountains section.
Q: WHERE CAN I GO FOR A SWIM? A: You can swim in all five valley
lakes—Green, Alta, Alpha, Nita and Lost. A few things to consider: Green Lake is chilly! Lost Lake is home to a nudie dock, located away from the main beach area. Nudity is not mandatory but don’t be surprised to see swimmers jumping au naturel! Alta Lake is perhaps the most popular swimming lake with beaches and docks at several parks including Rainbow Park and Lakeside Park.

hile Whistler Village is the hub of resort life, there are places to explore beyond. Function Junction is an eclectic mix of shops and services and worth the trip to the south end of town to browse the art gallery, pick up groceries at the organic store, stop in for a sweet bakery treat, or quench your thirst with a locally made brew. Between the Village and Function is Creekside. This is Whistler’s original ski base, the spot where the first chairlift began moving skiers up the mountain in 1965.
