“Opposites attract,” sang Paula Abdul in 1989. While she was referring to binary personality traits, my husband and I are, quite literally, polar opposites: he’s from Tasmania, the southernmost tip of Australia, and I grew up in Nunavut, about 3,000 kilometres from the North Pole. He had never seen snow before he showed up in Whistler on a working tourist visa, and I had never experienced a year without at least 30 consecutive days of darkness! Or a summer without a month of “midnight sun,” for that matter. It was always my dream to work in Whistler, and I’m a classic case of arriving for a season and then never leaving (for a reason!).
I met my husband shortly after he arrived in Canada in the late ’90s. Garfinkel’s had just moved to its current location, and when we met at the bar the music was too loud to sustain any sort of conversation. I didn’t think any more of it until he happened to turn up in the same gondola as me the following weekend. What a coincidence! We spent the half-an-hour ride up to the Roundhouse teaching each other local slang (I can now differentiate a doona from a dunny, and he can order a double double and Timbits wearing a toque). My abdomen hurt from laughing so hard, and at that point I knew this was going to be a long-term relationship. I described him as “mamaqtuq” (pronounced ma-makh-too), translating to “delicious.”
We’ve now been together for 24 years and have two kids together. If we ever divorce, it’s because he insists on making a dad joke about not moving the family to my hometown because he’s “having Nunavut” (which doesn’t even make sense when you pronounce it correctly!).

Six years ago, sparks flew as a skier and a snowboarder found a mutual love for beer pong. The number of planks they rode down the mountain was not the only difference to become apparent in the following days, but alas, the damage was already done and the hearts… they had become one.
From the immediately obvious difference in hair volume, that being him with none… The countries in which their mothers released them to the world just so happened to be on opposite sides of the planet. Maybe this has something to do with him being in love with the long winters and she suffering through for the long, warmer days. He eats meat so loudly the neighbours can hear, whilst she prefers to chew on plants eaten in what can only be described as table mannerly in comparison. While his body produces noise at a higher volume day to day, she certainly levels up the octaves when a dance floor gets involved. He likes sports, she likes musicals; he likes saving, she likes spending; he likes winging it, she likes planning.
But opposite, shmopposite. Although different in so many ways, he loves her, she loves him, and at the end of the day that’s all that bloody matters :)
