HSS Valedictorian Speech 2020 WRITTEN AND PRESENTED BY CLASS VALEDICTORIANS, ALEXANDRA LAVIOLETTE AND JON GILL This speech is dedicated to Steffanie Lawrence. She will always be a part of the 2020 Graduating Class of Howe Sound Secondary and Sea to Sky Alternate School.

G

ood evening students and a virtual hello to the families and friends watching this Live Stream. We welcome you to the Commencement Ceremony for the 2020 graduates of Howe Sound Secondary School.

My name is Jon Gill, and I am Alexandra Laviolette, but most of you know me as Alex. To start off this monumental evening, we need to address the elephant in the room. The Coronavirus or COVID-19 – if you want to be scientific – has changed the idea of what we thought a traditional graduation looks like. As we sit here, 40 of us waiting to walk across the stage, we do not have the opportunity to watch some of our best friends graduate. Yet Jon and I are grateful that our custodians have meticulously taken care of our school so we can hold our ceremony here, and that parents, faculty, and administration found a solution for the ceremony, giving us the opportunity to throw our caps and welcome new beginnings. To begin on a positive note, we are going to share with you a few lines from Grease , this year’s musical theatre production: - “Oh I just love the first day of school, don’t you?” - “It’s the biggest thrill of my life.” Imagine it: the first day of school all over again. For some (like Rizzo), it may not be so exciting, but we can all agree that the first day of Grade 12 was sentimental. This was the beginning of the end of our childhood, but also the prologue to our adolescence. Memories, such as the school musical, are something we can not take for granted. When we were little, we played dress-up, learned the drums, tried out for sports teams, and played with Hot Wheels or LEGO in our childhood homes. As we grew and matured into young adults, we carried these passions with us and pursued opportunities, such as acting in the school musical, rocking out in Band class, joining the basketball team, or participating in the Physics Olympics. The interests and successes we chased at such a young age truly shaped us into the individuals that we are today. So let us go back six years, remembering and reminiscing about our childhood: we were in Grade 7, all meeting for the first time with new expectations at a new school.

faut beaucoup du travail et dévouement pour apprendre une autre langue, alors nous vous félicitons pour votre réussite! It takes a lot of work and dedication to learn another language, so we congratulate you on your success! These are only some of the classes that influenced us, groomed us, and are passing us on to the lectures, seminars, and labs of the world. We thank all the teachers, staff, and administration for these moments – we also especially thank our families – you have helped us uncover our passions and have always celebrated our successes with us. Outside of class, we have been involved in endless opportunities in our school and the greater community. In the seats in front of us today, we have members of school clubs, dedicated volunteers to the West Coast Railway Heritage Museum (do you all remember the Hot Chocolate song?), and talented athletes (including the Sea-toSky District Senior Boys Basketball champions)! We have the future leaders of tomorrow in front of us today: Senior Leadership, Athletic Leadership, and Aboriginal Leadership students. We, as young adults, have spent hours helping our community through volunteerism, campaigns, projects, and fundraisers that not only aid our school, but aid the entire Sea-to-Sky community. No matter what each of us is involved in, whether in our personal or educational lives, we all share one thing in common: we are groundbreakers. Throughout our scholastic journey, we have contributed to the growth of our education system by being the first to engage in the new curriculum, the first to move to middle school in Grade 7, and the first to take part in widespread digital learning when adaptivity was crucial. We have never been afraid to take on the unknown. For example, we must not forget that our grade IS the driving force behind climate action. The activism that has been ignited within us will not be forgotten as we have proven to the world that youth are fully capable of inspiring and leading change for our Earth’s future. Do not just be immensely satisfied with your grades, be impressed with who you have become as involved citizens. That is the makeup of who we are. We are the youth who made a difference. You have shown utmost kindness and empathy to your loved ones during this time.

A new relationship that was created in our middle school years was Jolex: two similar individuals waltzing into the seventh grade, one wanting to be the female version of Steve Jobs, and the other wanting to be a pilot.

The world understands the disappointment you must be feeling for not having the graduation you have always dreamed of, but they thank you: you have helped flatten the curve. You are saving lives. That is something we can all be proud to say.

From there I wanted to be an author and I found many of my teachers becoming my mentors. These same teachers inspired my evolving dreams, and I then found myself wanting to be a translator.

Take this graduation as your moment to hold your head up as high as you can – to show the world that you are ready for whatever is in store.

We are not quite following these goals we once had but that is the beauty of it: we get to change our minds and change them again.

So here we are. You are about to be on stage with a cap on your head and a diploma in hand. Congratulations to yourselves: for achieving success and for making it this far. Thank you for the six years of memories, intelligent memories or not. The time has come to say goodbye and venture off to wherever your path is leading you. You shall not know if you’re making the right decisions and you’ll question yourself multiple times, but just remember, you will always have friends to call from home.

All of our teachers have guided us: they let us grow as activists and historians within the Social Studies classes, writers in English, and trades experts in Skills Exploration. Mousetrap-car champions in Science class, Desmos-extraordinaires in Math, and seasoned performers in Band, Drama, and Theatre. All of us are graduating with our English classes under our belt, but the select few French Immersion students will also graduate avec un diplôme de fin d’études secondaires en Colombie-Britannique. (For anyone who does not know, this is a Double Dogwood in English). ll

To the graduating class of 2020: who put others before themselves.

Thank you.
