A FUSION WEDDING
Seattle couple fulfills lofty goal of hosting two ceremonies in one celebration
Written by : Brandon Barrett
Initially, Seattleites Amber Amin, 30, and Isaac Prevost, 31, had their eyes set on Whistler for their summer nuptials. The couple first met through student government at the University of Washington, but it was their shared love of the mountains that truly cemented their love for each other.
8 WISHES 2024
“We both loved hiking and we would get off campus and go adventuring when we could,” Amber said. “Between our love of winter sports, backpacking, and hiking, we knew we wanted to be in the mountains for our wedding.”
Amber had the added connection of skiing Whistler growing up, eventually becoming an instructor. In fact, she was the one to teach Isaac how to ski. Given all that, Whistler seemed the perfect place to dedicate the rest of their lives to each other.
“Whistler has always felt like a magical place for us. I grew up skiing and did summer ski camp in Whistler in high school, and that stood out as one of my favourite experiences of being a kid. It quickly became clear to us that Whistler had this really great mountain scene and awesome vendors, from what I could tell online.”
Soon enough, however, Amber and Isaac came to a realization that more and more couples have in recent years: neighbouring Pemberton has got a certain magic of its own, too.
“Whistler is what put Pemberton on the map for us,” Amber relayed. “Pemberton wasn’t on our radar until we started looking around Whistler and realized you could still get these incredible mountain views from the valley.”
The couple eventually settled on Pemberton’s North Arm Farm for ...

their July wedding. The 14-hectare produce farm, with its renowned potatoes, blueberries, beets, carrots, and more, has evolved over the years into one of the Sea to Sky’s most sought-after wedding hosts.
“The farm itself is stunning,” Amber said. “We were both into the idea of being at a farm because we’re both into gardening, and eating the food right from the farm was something we both loved. It felt like the right fit.”
With beautiful weather on the big day, Amber, Isaac and their 145 guests enjoyed their multi-course meal in plein air, the farm’s crop fields mere steps away, the towering majesty of Mount Currie casting its wide shadow in the distance.
“It was unreal,” Amber said. “Of course, the weather cooperating made it so much better.”
The possibility of unruly weather wasn’t the only logistical challenge the couple and their vendors had to worry about. The couple wanted the aesthetic to incorporate Amber’s Indian roots, while still recognizing their shared Western traditions.
“Both of us are American and one of us is also Indian. We didn’t feel like it would be quite right to do an allWestern style ceremony or an all-Indian style, so we thought we’d do our own thing and have a fusion,” Amber explained.
That led to an audacious goal: holding two ceremonies and two cocktail hours in one day.
“We had a non-denominational, Western-style ceremony where we really thought it was important to say our own personal vows,” Amber said. “Afterwards we

also did a Hindu ceremony, and that was important for me because it felt like getting married in the same way my parents did. I thought it was important to carry on that tradition.”
Amber’s two different looks contrasted each other beautifully: one, an elegant, flowy Western-style white dress, the other a vibrantly coloured Indian saree flush with warm hues of pink, gold and red, along with elaborate henna running down her arms.
Even the vendors, from the venue to the florist to the DJ, went out of their way to accommodate the wedding’s two distinct styles.
“All of our vendors, everyone we worked with, and the venue were super willing to be creative with us,” Amber said. “We had a creative vision that took a lot of work, a lot of heavy lifting. We are really grateful that everyone was willing to think big with us.”
While weddings can go by in a blur for the couples involved, there’s one moment Amber and Isaac won’t soon forget from their big day, a reminder of how far they’d come and the exciting future that lay ahead of them.
"It’s hard to describe how magical it feels to be in that setting with everyone you love. I very distinctly remember the moment the clouds cleared and the sun hit Mount Currie and everyone I love is there. I thought, ‘I don’t know how it gets better than this.’ It was my favourite moment of the day,” Amber said. O

TIPS
AND TRENDS TO HELP BRIDES DECIDE ON A STYLE FOR THEIR BIG DAY
Written by : Megan Lalonde
Congratulations! The question was popped, and the answer was yes. After the initial excitement subsides, a seemingly endless list of decisions comes into focus: choosing a date, venue, food, music, photographer and a dress.
It may rank lower on the list in terms of logistical importance, but deciding how to wear your hair on your wedding day can be tough.
After all, you want to feel your best on the big day. And, let’s be real, the photos live forever, even if the trends don’t.
Finding a stylist
The Sea to Sky is a popular wedding destination for couples based near and far. If you count yourself in the non-local camp, don’t stress about flying in your trusted hometown stylist–the locals have you covered.
“Not only do we have amazing, talented hair stylists (and make-up artists) in the Sea to Sky corridor, but this will help save on travel costs as well,” noted Carlee Cindric, the wedding and event specialist behind Pemberton-based Pocketful Productions. “There's no need to look any further!”
Your wedding planner, coordinator or even your venue can likely recommend hairstylists and other vendors who are “wonderful to work with,” Cindric explained.
For couples handling wedding planning on their own, a quick Google search for Whistler or Pemberton wedding hair should do the trick, she added.
Take a good look through an artist’s online portfolio—and, ideally, schedule a trial—to ensure the stylist is comfortable working with your hair texture and can achieve the style you have in mind, said Natacha Trottier, a mobile bridal hair and makeup artist who offers her services across the corridor.
Trottier also suggests hiring a stylist who specializes in weddings, rather than a colourist or salon professional who mainly focuses on cuts.
What if you’re the kind of gal who knows how to wield a curling iron, or you’re wary about leaving your tresses in the hands of a stranger?
Even for professionals, there’s value in handing over the reins for the day, said Trottier.
12 WISHES 2024
“It's an experience,” she explained. “I think it adds to the day. I did my own hair at my wedding and it was really stressful. Things were not working out how I wanted; I had a friend who had to hold a mirror behind my head—[wedding hairstyling] is what I do every day and I was stressed. Having somebody taking care of you and calming you is actually really nice … it’s almost a meditative moment.”
Tracking the trends
There’s multiple factors brides should consider when
selecting a hairstyle (we’ll get to some of those in a minute), but if staying on-trend is important to you, both Trottier and Cindric agree: the clean-girl aesthetic is in.
Think middle-parted, slicked-back buns; soft updos, and sleek Hollywood waves—”hairstyles that portray simplicity,” or “chic elegance,” said Cindric. “Embracing a less-is-more approach is the way to go.”
As for the textured, boho-inspired plaited styles that filled your Pinterest boards throughout the 2010s? “Braids are kind of out,” Trottier admitted.

Brides wanting to add more visual interest to their hairstyle can instead lean into pearls, fresh florals and headbands for an updated look. When it comes to accessories, both Trottier and Cindric also expect to see more exaggerated bow ribbons headed down the aisle in 2024.
Another trend seen more often these days is a mid-event hairstyle switch. Taking hair from down to up is quicker and easier than the reverse, Trottier cautioned, but either way, it’s a fun way to freshen up your look throughout the day.
“If your hairstyle switch-up can be done easily yourself or with the help of your bridesmaids/friends then going this route is a no-brainer,” said Cindric, but “If you're looking for

a more complex hairdo for the second part of your day, you may need to keep your hair stylist around, which will mean additional costs.”
(One workaround? Hire a multi-talented vendor like Trottier, who is also qualified to officiate weddings—in that case, she’ll have to stick around throughout the ceremony anyways!)
Deciding factors
Hair type, dress style, weather, location—for example, a windy mountaintop or climate-controlled museum—are all important factors to think about when deciding on a hairstyle, the experts noted, but most crucial is picking a style you’re confident wearing. “If someone always wears their hair down and they want to do an updo for their wedding, it might sound nice, but they might feel uncomfortable,” said Trottier.
In the same vein, a bride wearing heavy necklaces or a dress with substantial beading around the neckline may want to avoid wearing their hair down, if only to prevent strands from getting “caught in all that detail, making the hair really matted and super knotty,” Trottier explained.
Cindric also suggests “taking into account what side you will be standing on during the ceremony (and for most of your photos),” and steering clear of any styles that would effectively hide your face from your guests and photographers.
If you still don’t know where to start, Trottier recommends scrolling through red carpet photos for inspiration, especially of celebrities wearing dresses with similar necklines to your gown, or with a similar hair length and colour to your own.
Other tips? Be on time for your appointment, come with clean, dry hair (Trottier shudders at the widespread myth that greasy, second-day hair is best for styling) and keep your expectations in check with your hair length and thickness. “Oftentimes people show [me] photos where I'm like, ‘Well, this is just unrealistic,’” said Trottier. “ Like, ‘I can do this, but you need extensions.’” (Which, it should be noted, Trottier has available for her clients to rent.)
She added, “We have combs, not magic wands.”
Finally, said Cindric, “always be sure to bring extra bobby pins and hairspray with you just in case you need to touch-up [or] refresh your hair throughout the day.” O

An ‘anti-wedding’ celebration
Whistler nuptials glean inspiration from scenic venues
Written by: Roisin Cullen
Allyson Sprague never thought a traditional wedding would be her cup of tea when her husband-to-be, Sam Denny, suggested it. However, the pair struck a perfect compromise with a subtle and tasteful celebration filled with family and friends.
Their wedding last March took place in the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre and the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
The resort had always been the couple’s happy place so it made sense for it to be the scenic backdrop for their biggest party yet.
“Both Sam and I grew up skiing here,” said Allyson. “As a family I would come up two times a year usually and always between Boxing Day through New Year’s. We have so many memories as a family up here skiing. It's where I learned and fell in love with the sport. The energy and global sophistication of Whistler and Blackcomb combined with the Canadian friendliness cannot be beat. Sam and I bonded over our mutual love of skiing on our first date and so when my mom suggested Whistler and a winter wedding it was a no brainer.”
For Allyson, an “anti-wedding” wedding was the dream. Her bridesmaids did not wear the same colour, instead
...
Sea to Sky Wedding Magazine 2024 17
opting for complimentary tones that they liked. It was important that guests felt like they had just rocked up for a walk in the forest.
“I wanted the most anti-wedding feel ever. Nothing formulaic or cliche or typically wedding,” Allyson said. “Something fun, cozy, classy, that enveloped the ski and chateau vibe of Whistler, and felt fancy, elegant, sophisticated, but wasn't flashy. We wanted to honour the beauty of the mountain and the snow and the green nature. I have a weird obsession with candles, so I wanted a lot of candles and fresh greenery to sort of welcome spring time into the ski atmosphere. We chose the cultural centre as it was just perfect for the [elegance] … and not a typical wedding venue.”
Allyson’s mom, Krista Sprague, planned the wedding in the family’s “happy place.” She wanted the focus to be the
18 WISHES 2024
surroundings of the venue.
“This was not a downtown wedding in Chicago,” she said. “This was a wedding that needed to be authentic … The focus was on the place, on the fabulous surroundings, it just nailed it for all of us. The Fairmont also did a fabulous job.”
The huge windows in the cultural centre created a special feel during the ceremony. “It was like being outside,” said Krista. “My daughter wanted little candles in the ledges and all along the aisle. I just wanted greenery. I wanted it to look like we had just pulled up and got out for a walk in the forest. I wanted to bring the outdoors in. We brought giant, glossy branches in tall vases around the circumference of the room. There were very muted napkins and tablecloth.”
A massive installation of baby’s breath hanging from the ceiling took guests’ breath away and created the feeling that there was no ceiling at all. “When you go downstairs, it had lower ceilings,” Krista said. “We wanted to raise the roof a bit. I had seen the baby’s breath done before online, but never really in that particular application. I just wanted the whole ceiling to be filled with baby’s breath so that it reflected either clouds or the snow on the mountains.”
This wedding, of course, needed an après ski–and the couple found their party at the Longhorn Saloon. However, popping champagne bottles with old pals paled in comparison to Sam’s favourite moment.
“My favourite moment was seeing Ally walk down the aisle with her dad and seeing her smile,” he said. O

A Canadian outdoor experience
Couple adds element of Mexican culture to quintessential Sea to Sky wedding
Written by: David Song
In the summer of 2016, Diana Valencia met her future husband Daniel Bruning. She was from Mexico, he from the Netherlands, and both had just begun their studies at the Vancouver Film School (VFS). It didn’t take too long for them to discover a mutual connection.
“We were in the same class and sitting next to each other,” Bruning recalled. “So everything was meant to be … from when we got to Canada and started studying.”
The two creatively minded individuals began dating, and their relationship blossomed naturally. Fast forward seven years: Valencia and Bruning tied the knot
20 WISHES 2024
over the August long weekend in 2023. Sunwolf Riverside Resort in Squamish was their location of choice for a variety of reasons.
For one, many of the couple’s friends and family members don’t live in Canada, so they needed a place that wasn’t too difficult to reach. They considered various options across British Columbia, but ended up going for Squamish: roughly an hour-and-a-half’s drive north from Vancouver International Airport.
Being outdoors was also a primary consideration.
“We knew that we wanted to be in nature,” said Valencia. “We also had two dogs, and we knew we wanted to have them in the wedding.”
“We wanted to give everybody the Canadian outdoor
experience, and Sunwolf has that,” added Bruning. “It has cabins so you can stay overnight. It was like the perfect combination: having a wedding there, and giving everybody a place to stay.”
Things didn’t quite go according to plan at first. The duo certainly wanted all of their loved ones in the same place, but the tent accommodations they expected to be available from another company during the August long weekend were not—at least not at first. That left them scrambling to find alternative options for a while.
Roughly two months before the big day, Valencia and Bruning received some good news. The much-needed tents would be available after all, and the wedding was

all systems go.
“We were overflowing with space, and everything was the way we wanted,” Valencia recalled. “Everybody that we invited came and everybody stayed for the whole weekend, so we felt very lucky.”
The festivities kicked off on Friday with a welcome barbecue, followed by the wedding itself on Saturday. Then Sunday functioned as a kind of extended reception, with board games, bingo, karaoke and more delicious barbecue.
Many of the guests didn’t know each other beforehand, but according to Valencia, they bonded over the course of
the long weekend. Most everyone left as friends.
“It was a weekend getaway, like a mini-holiday for everybody,” Bruning commented. “Not your traditional wedding.”
Valencia felt strongly about incorporating one specific part of her heritage into the ceremony: the wedding lasso. Resembling a rope with a bouquet of flowers attached to it, this type of lasso tends to be very popular among Catholic Latinx and Filipino cultures. Normally, the wedding officiant or godparents place the lasso over the couple’s shoulders after vows are exchanged as a sign of togetherness and unification.

“We didn't want to do a religious ceremony, but we wanted to take some of the traditions from it,” said Valencia. “The lasso symbolizes the union that you’re making when you get married, and you’re supposed to get it from a couple that you admire—a couple whose relationship is a strong relationship.”
In this instance, Valencia’s parents helped her make the lasso a few days before the wedding ceremony. Bruning was on board too.
“I don’t think we did anything [from Dutch culture],” he said. “I feel like there's nothing very unique like [the lasso] from Holland. There, it’s not too different from what you have in Canada.”
Overall, Valencia and Bruning couldn’t be more thrilled with how their big day played out. They did their due diligence, booking vendors a year in advance, and were pleased with all of them. O

Making the most of your mini-moon
FROM AN ALPINE GETAWAY TO A LAKESIDE LODGE, HONEYMOONING NEAR THE SEA TO SKY IS ANYTHING BUT BORING.
Written by: Brandon Barrett
If you’re a follower of wedding industry trends, chances are you’ve heard of the recent “mini-moon” phenomenon that has especially gained traction since the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic. Essentially a condensed version of a traditional honeymoon that typically sees newlyweds staying closer to home for their post-nuptial celebration, it allows couples to forgo the planning stress of an extended, far-flung getaway, not to mention avoid a huge hit to the wallet. It’s also common for couples to embark on their honeymoon soon after their wedding, basking in newly wedded bliss, and affording ample time and space to plan a longer, grand honeymoon down the road if they so desire.
The Sea to Sky corridor, with its rustic charms and off-the-beaten-path hideaways, is the perfect destination for the adventurous mini-mooners. Take Whitecap Alpine, a true hidden gem for hikers and backcountry skiers alike, this intimate, alpine getaway is nestled in between the coast and the interior, and, just a short helicopter ride from Pemberton, it is officially the closest all-inclusive backcountry adventure lodge to Vancouver.
“I think Whitecap offers a unique place for couples to escape to,” said marketing manager Jen Girardi. “What’s really nice is it is a private tenure, so we avoid that overtourism aspect of popular hikes like Joffre Lakes. The beautiful thing for the guests is you get full access, if you want it, to the lodge and the space. It’s that really beautiful just-you-and-nature feeling.”
Equipped with an onsite chef and a team of certified mountain guides who lead guests on hikes or ski outings, Whitecap is well situated to cater to guests’ specific needs, creating a tailor-made mini-moon package just for them. Honeymooners can book the entire lodge to themselves, or choose to stay alongside a handful of other guests. (Whitecap has a max capacity of 15 guests.)
“We're always looking to make people's dreams come true. Every inquiry can be as custom as people want it,” Girardi said.
24 WISHES 2024

Sea to Sky Wedding Magazine 2024 25
The wood-burning, alpine sauna, located a 45-minute hike from the lodge on top of a single rock in the middle of a breath-taking mountain lake, is another of Whitecap’s unique draws for the nature-loving couple.
“It’s just stunning,” Girardi said.
Tyax Lodge is another intimate Sea to Sky adventure lodge offering the best in outdoor adventure and luxury for discerning honeymooners. Located in the heart of the South Chilcotins, near Gold Bridge, Tyax is accessible by ground or air, yet still remote enough to get away from it all.
“We often say we're the best kept secret. The valley is still up and coming and people really appreciate it's far away from the hustle and bustle, even compared to Whistler and Pemberton,” said relief lodge manager Malgosia Szajwaj. (Although it has wi-fi, Tyax doesn’t have cell service, giving you all the more reason to unplug.)
Known across the West Coast for its heli-ski offerings, Tyax works with nearby Tyax Adventures to drop off hikers on spectacular alpine trails (there are also easier interpretive trails closer to the lodge), or they can enjoy a scenic helicopter tour overlooking the rugged landscape.
“The scenery changes drastically,” Szajwaj said.
Tyax offers two packages that would be perfect for mini-mooners: The Romance by the Lake package, and the Rejuvenation package. The Romance package includes two nights accommodation, daily breakfast and dinner for two (including a sumptuous, multicourse meal on the second night, along with a romantic turndown), full use of onsite watercraft, unlimited access to The Spa at Tyax, two 60-minute massage treatments, and a gift bag. The spa features dry and infrared saunas, a eucalyptus steam room, and a custommade hot tub that wraps around a large tree stump and offers breathtaking lake views.
The Rejuvenation package is similar, “with more of an emphasis on the health aspect,” Szajwaj relayed, swapping out the romantic multi-course meal for a daily stretch class for two.
“It’s a great place to focus on each other as a couple and reconnect,” Szajwaj added. O
