STILLWATER — As St. Croix Ballet prepares for its 25th Nutcracker presentation Thanksgiving weekend, director Susan Hovey is looking to the future while celebrating the past. “There are so many families and dancers that have been a part of this Nutcracker throughout the last 25 years—a highlight of their years growing up,” Hovey said. The family-friendly narrated pro-

duction follows Clara and her Nutcracker as they journey to the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The two-act Russian ballet debuted in 1892 with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This will be Hovey’s 13th Stillwater Nutcracker; she took over as artistic director of the studio after founder Karla Sweeney retired in 2012. Sweeney passed away in February after a courageous 15-year battle with breast cancer. “Ms. Karla left an incredible

legacy,” Hovey said. “Every year the show is new for me because of the excitement of the dancers for this beloved ballet. They learn the parts as they grow up, they have roles they aspire to, and they form lasting friendships.” Rehearsals started in September for the production’s 120 dancers, ranging in age from 5 to adult. Hovey said the lead roles are split cast, with the role of Clara performed by Sofia Miller, a junior at St. Croix

Preparatory Academy, and Elizabeth Kleiber, a ninth-grader at Hudson High; the Nutcracker Prince danced by Jeremy Baxter, a senior at Roseville High School, and Sam Kratz, a junior who is home-schooled; the Sugar Plum Fairy danced by Stillwater Area High School senior Ava Wichser and SAHS junior McKenzie Brady; and Joseph Roesler and Will Kratz as the Sugar Plum’s Cavaliers.
