New aerial engine checks off all the boxes

New interest in Commerce Drive BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

Mayor Tom Weidt added, “It is a huge purchase for the city of Hugo and a very expensive purchase, so we have kind of been resistant to it because of the amount of money and, frankly, during the recession we were not in a place to do something like this. We are now, and we think

CENTERVILLE — Another business has come forward expressing interest in building on Commerce Drive. On Jan. 8, the Planning and Zoning Commission was presented with a concept plan and purchase agreement from Midwest Best Water Sales Inc. for the build-out of the city-owned 2.3-acre parcel located at 2021 Commerce Drive. The City Council briefly discussed the topic at its meeting the next day, but City Attorney Kurt Glaser recommended tabling the action until after the city has been able to discuss the purchase agreement/real estate negotiations at a closed session. According to the concept plan, Midwest Best Water Sales would conduct product assembly, warehousing, service and equipment repair on the site and there would only be five semitrucks per month coming and going. Outside storage is not being proposed, and no retail sales are proposed.

The Hugo City Council approved the purchase of an aerial engine, not to exceed $1.1 million at its Dec. 17 meeting. The purchase is two years ahead of schedule, but the slightly used engine became available at a reduced price and the city didn’t want to wait. The engine will replace the city’s 1991 engine. The Hugo Fire Department is expected to have the truck delivered sometime in February. BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
