HUGO—The Hugo Fire Department (HFD) couldn’t be more thankful to the businesses and residents who have made their dangerous job a bit safer. As a result of the community’s generosity, HFD has been able to purchase new equipment/gear to insure its fi refighters are protected against carcinogens. Firefighting is a dangerous profession in more ways than one. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recently undertook two large studies focused on cancer in firefighters and concluded that firefighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses, and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths, compared to the general population in the United States. The Fire Relief Association’s primary purpose is to manage fi refighter’s pensions, but it also tries to raise funds for equipment/gear that is needed in the industry, but not covered in the city’s budget. The main fundraiser is the HFD calendar, now in its 17th edition. Businesses can choose to purchase ad space or donate, and residents can also donate. SEE FIRE EQUIPMENT, PAGE 17
Retired engineer has trains in his blood BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
After a 43-year career driving trains, a local engineer says trains “are in his blood.” Bruce Lemay, a longtime resident of Hugo, made his fi nal trip with Amtrak and retired on July 10. Lemay is a third-generation “train guy.” His grandpa was a traveling storekeeper and his father was a floorman in the car department for Milwaukee Railroad. “It gets in your blood. I really enjoyed operating the trains and

having the opportunity to train people and make a difference in their lives,” he said. Despite the fact both his grandfather and father worked in the industry, Lemay was not always convinced his career would involve trains. He started working for Burlington Northern doing section work in the summer of 1973 and began working with his dad at Milwaukee Railroad in the summer of 1974. In 1975, he attended St. Cloud Technical College to pursue a two-year degree in business

administration. “Once I realized I could have a long-lasting career with the railroad, I was all in,” Lemay said. He became a brakeman/conductor for Milwaukee Railroad and four years later became an engineer, driving from St. Paul to Duluth. In 1987 he switched over to Amtrak, where he worked until he retired. In the beginning of his career, he did trips from St. Cloud to Milwaukee and in his later years he travelled from St. Cloud to Winona and from SEE ENGINEER, PAGE 23
