Pumpkins blossom into yearly tradition
Commission considers changes to outside storage BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR

CENTERVILLE — For over a year now, the Planning and Zoning Commission has been debating on whether it should recommend some changes to the city code related to outside storage in residential districts. City Administrator Mark Statz explained that the commission had to take a bit of a break from the topic to focus on various developments, but now is the time “to continue to move the process forward,” he said. The commission held a public hearing on the topic previously, but since a full year has passed, City Attorney Kurt Glaser recommended the commission hold another public hearing to make sure the public was aware of the proposed changes and had the opportunity to provide additional input. Statz said it was also important to review the topic again, as some of the current commission members were not involved in the process the last time around. It’s important to note that the changes would apply to singlefamily homes.

Every year, a father and son try to outdo each other in weight — that is, when it comes to growing pumpkins. For the past five years, Hugo
resident Jeff LeClair has tried to grow a pumpkin that not only beats his previous year’s pumpkin, but eventually his father Mark LeClair’s pumpkin. Mark has been honing his pumpkin growing skills for quite some time, but son Jeff said he

Yards may be smaller, but the halfmillion dollar houses still feature four bedrooms and three-stall garages. “They sell,” Bear pointed out, noting that the Planning Commission has been flexible in approving narrower lots. “It does not result in more affordable homes. The market influences the cost of housing.” Housing is expensive in Hugo because developers are required to build the streets and pay for utilities and infrastructure. They also pay the city’s costs for the project. If all the land in Hugo develops, population is estimated to jump to 40,000. The 2020 census

The 15th annual bus tour, an October event for anyone intrigued by the city’s prodigious growth, did not disappoint. City Administrator Bryan Bear narrates the twohour tour by luxury coach that this year listed 19 stops within the 36 square miles that is Hugo. But much is also said during gaps in between. One thing stands out: Hugo is growing at a rapid pace. As Bear described, neighborhoods appear so quickly, it’s like they dropped from the sky. He was talking about housing developments like Oneka Place, which sprouted up in 18 months on 65-footwide lots. More houses per foot appeal to builders,
