Isolation is a good time for nature appreciation

There's been a lot of confusion about whether it is safe to spend time outdoors during the spread of COVID-19, but many agree that nature is a needed balm when people are going stir-crazy inside their homes.

Isolation is the rule of thumb, but experts have told us it's OK to take a solo jog or a hike in a park as long as people avoid physical contact and do not congregate in large groups.

If you do venture out of your house to enjoy the outdoors, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Any time you stop for gas or for food, your risk of spreading germs is higher. Try to bring your own food, or eat before you go, and make sure your gas tank is full before you leave. If your destination lies in a small community far away from urban centers with access to medical supplies, try not to stop at all. Many communities, such as Moab, Utah, have been overwhelmed by visitors seeking solace in the great outdoors with little awareness of the risk they present to nearby small towns.

Try to use your time outdoors as a solo adventure: avoid gathering in groups.

Don't use public restrooms in the park or in communities along the way; try to take care of business before you go.

Stick to trails and routes that no one else is using and adjust the timing of your outing to avoid peak hours.

Take trash with you when you go; although parks are open, it may be a while before staff are able to empty trash cans in the area.

Follow the general Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and be certain to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds when you return to your home.

Start a nature journal When working from home becomes difficult, art can provide a much-needed break. Self-isolation has brought out the artist in many people in the last few weeks. This can be a fun activity for whole families who are home together. You don't have to have natural artistic talent to begin a nature journal. A guide, such as the free PDF download of "How to Teach Nature Journaling" from johnmuirlaws.com can help you get started. Nature journaling is all about making observations and paying close attention to the details. It can be a good opportunity to hone artistic skill and get your eyes off the screen.

Start a list of yard birds Birders sometimes keep a "life list" of all the bird species they have seen in their lifetime. Many of them also keep a "yard list" while trying to attract the greatest diversity of birds into their yards with attractive fea-

tures such as feeders, bird baths and native plantings for perches and shelter. The free app eBird can help you keep track of and report the birds you observe in your yard, or this may be a good opportunity to create a handwritten bird journal of your own design.

You could also work on increasing the diversity of wildlife in your yard by building a birdbath, a birdhouse or creating a brush pile for habitat.

Learn birdsongs by ear Many people are taking solace in the comfort of birdsong outside their windows as migratory birds begin returning from the south and singing their best tunes to attract mates. Active listening can train your brain to pick out unusual sounds, even if you live in an urban or suburban area. Birds to listen for: sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, red-tailed hawks, Eastern bluebirds, white-throated sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and mourning doves. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's All About Birds website (allaboutbirds.org) has hundreds of audio records of birdsong anyone can access for free. Apps such as Song Sleuth can record and help identify birdsong.

I

’m getting a lot of calls and questions of late regarding "When?"

Sticking to outdoor themes, these “when questions” are annual things that revolve around not being too late.

You never want to hear that age-old response of, “You should have been here yesterday.” Every spring the first when questions I hear are about crappies coming into the shallows.

These are usually followed by when certain fish spawn.

This year with an Wild River earlier spring caused by the lack of March Trails snowstorms I’m getting questions Jim Bennett about when it's time to start planting the garden. Can I plant seeds yet? My specific question is: When is the pair of wood ducks that just walked through my yard going to nest? Hopefully right here in my yard!

Ice-out crappies are always on my list. Every spring when black bottom shallow bays get hit by that warm spring sun, crappies make pre-spawn runs. Minnows and early insect hatches will draw those crappies in shallows to feed and warm up. So, what are the water temperatures of those bays right now? We stuck a thermometer into a small lake across from my house that holds perch, pike and crappies. We found that the shallow water temp was a balmy 28 degrees. I wondered how that could be possible and not freeze.

"Earth Science" reports that special circumstances come into play for that to happen without ice forming. Evidently, when you have snow or ice melt occurring when night temperatures are below freezing, it can happen. Add upwellings from underground, moving springs below freezing, similar to rivers that can have water temperatures below freezing but not freeze,

ice doesn’t form. Add a wind factor, sleet, snow and cold rain to get a water temperature of 28 degrees. I’m watching all of that happen from my window, Friday, April 3, after we took that water temperature.

Crappies will move into the shallows when the bays warm to a temperature above the mean lake temp, but spawning is an entirely different question.

Walleye spawn first at 38 degrees, sauger 40, perch 44, northern pike 48, muskie 49, paddlefish 50, smallmouth bass 59, striped bass 60, crappie 62 with largemouth bass and sunfish above 62 degrees. Right now lakes in our region are around 40 degrees according to the USGS. When it comes to gardening, I try to get in root crops where I live in St. Croix County by April 15 and the rest of my garden by May 1, weather permitting. Onion sets can go into the ground when night lows are above 30 degrees. Potato cuttings should not be planted until the ground reaches 40 degrees. I checked both my garden and raised garden soil temperatures April Fools Day and found both at 50 degrees.

The hardiest seeds that will germinate in soil temps in the 30s are leeks, endive, garlic, lettuce, mustard, spinach and radishes. Soil temps in the 40s will germinate seeds of beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, kale, peas, Swiss chard and turnips.

Seeds that need a 50-degree soil temperature include asparagus, sweet corn and tomatoes. A 60-degree soil temperature is what you need to grow beans, eggplants, cucumbers, muskmelon, peppers, pumpkins, squash and watermelon from seed. You don’t want that water to freeze!

The Forest Lake Police Department is increasing its crime-fighting arsenal with a new app to help residents connect with the department to find information, view alerts, and submit anonymous tips from their smartphone.

Developed by tip411, the app is available for download for free via the Google Play Store, iTunes App Store, or by visiting the Forest Lake Police Department website at www.flpd.com.

“Our department has a strong partnership with the citizens in our community,” said Richard R. Peterson, Director of Public Safety. “I have found that the more information we can provide to the citizens, the more they help us keep Forest Lake a safe and good place to live, and that’s why I believe the new Forest Lake PD app from tip411 will help enhance our ability to engage our community.”

The app enables the public to share an anonymous tip with police and lets officers respond to create an anonymous two-way conversation.

“We’ve listened to feedback from partners like Forest Lake Police and have built a more advanced and innovative product to help departments better engage their communities,” said tip411 President Terry Halsch. “The Forest Lake PD app powered by tip411 will greatly improve the public’s access to agency alerts, social media channels, important information, and more to help fight crime.”

The app and tip411 anonymous text a tip system are 100% anonymous, as the technology removes all identifying information before police see the tips and there is no way to identify the sender.

Residents in Forest Lake without a smartphone can share information with police by sending an anonymous text tip via their cell phone to police by texting keyword FLPD and their message/tip to 847411 (tip411). Anonymous web tips can also be submitted through the department’s website at flpd.com.

don’t think anyone would have ever imagine our community, state, country and world would be where we are today. We are certainly traveling in unchartered territory trying hard to fi nd answers. But one thing is certain— when a crisis strikes, our community comes together. The bridge between business and community has never been more vital or prevalent then during this time of fluctuation and resilience.

At the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, we champion our businesses Chamber who enrich the lives of our community. We are very Chat concerned for the health and Robin Anthony wealth of our businesses and organizations during this unknown time. Our role at the Chamber is more important now, than ever, as we continue to serve, advocate and promote our business community. We also continue to partner with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and their message is simple and we concur. “The business community is doing its part to mitigate the health risk of this crisis and protect our economy for the short and long term. Balancing the health impact with the economic impact must be part of the equation,” as Doug Loon, President of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, said.

Several businesses have made extensive adjustments to their operations trying to make payroll, pay their bills, and keep their doors open by flexible and creative changes and modifications. Some are unable to be open due to the Governor’s current order. However, we can all do our part to help. We also have an operations list of businesses that are open and how they have modified their services on our website. Many of us have more time now, and we ask that you take that time to make a purposeful decision to shop local (lots of local retailers have online shopping), buy a gift certificate now that you can use later, order takeout food, and donate to your local non-profit if you can. A phrase we all have heard a lot of—“we are all in this together”—is true.

The Chamber is a non-profit organization and we need support from our community in order to support our community. Due to COVID-19 we responsibility but unfortunately postponed three of our community fundraising events, however, sponsorships for these events are still available and is a wonderful opportunity for advertisement, marketing and show of support!

Local newsrooms hit hard by COVID-19

OVID-19 may be a global pandemic, but it’s highlighting the importance of community news outlets like ours. Readers are seeking accurate and thorough reporting that comes to them without fear-mongering or sensationalizing. Now, more than ever, they are turning to local media sources to keep them informed.

The U.S. newspaper industry was already in a precarious spot, but the COVID-19 crisis has put additional pressure on it. Throughout the country, newsrooms have been hit hard by shrinking advertising revenue.

Many have been forced to temporarily or permanently lay off Between staff, suspend publications and, in some cases, shut down entirely. the Lines Fortunately, that is not the Elizabeth Callen case at Press Publications. We are thankful for our dedicated readership, most of whom likely did not need a global health crisis to realize that strong local journalism is crucial to a strong community. State parks can ward off 'stir-crazy' feelings in quarantine

Minnesota may be under a stay-athome order for the time being, but its state parks remain open.

That's good news for nature enthusiasts who may be feeling a bit stir-crazy due to their coronavirus-induced confi nement. But officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) still want Minnesotans to remain careful when venturing outdoors.

In the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, DNR officials are neither prohibiting nor discouraging Minnesotans to visit state parks, waters and public lands, but they are urging visitors to practice responsible recreation and to abide by social distancing guidelines.

“Now is a great time to get outdoors,” DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen said in a statement.

“Parks are a great place to do some social distancing and enjoy the health benefits of nature.”

The current stay-at-home order, which Gov. Tim Walz has extended through May 10, still permits people to be outdoors and engage in activities like walking, running and fi shing. Likewise, the majority of Minnesota's state parks are open— but only for day-time use.

Camping and overnight stays at the state's nature parks, forests and recreation areas are banned as campgrounds and lodging facilities have been temporarily closed, as

have visitor centers, contact stations and other buildings.

Several nearby parks—such as Afton in Hastings and William O'Brien in Marine-on-St.-Croix— have experienced significantly higher-than-average usage in recent weeks. damage may also be a sign of an infestation, as woodpeckers like to feed on the larvae. An EAB larva can also be identified by the pair of brown, pincer-like appendages on its tail end.

You should not waste your time searching for the adult beetles or the D-shaped exit holes, as they are difficult to find. “The (D-shaped exit holes) are only about 1/8-inch big, and a lot of native species make similar-shaped holes on trees,” Osthus explained. “The beetles are not social creatures and typically stay up in the canopy of the tree. In 10 years, I have only spotted one adult beetle sitting on a trunk.”

On average, it takes EAB about five or six years to kill a tree. During the first two years of infestation, you will likely not see any signs that EAB is present. In the third and fourth years, however, the infestation will be identifiable if you know what to look for. In the fourth

Methods of treatment Typically, if the infestation is caught within the first three years, the tree should be healthy enough to save through treatment. For treatment to be effective, the tree must still have at least 70% of its canopy left. The most common type of treatment is trunk injections, Osthus said. The MDA recommends having the injections done by a professional tree removal company.

The treatments are effective for 2-3 years and must be reapplied.

It should be noted that some of the chemicals used could affect native species and pollinators. If a tree is too far gone, there is always the option of removing/ replacing the tree. MDA encourages people to not remove ash trees or do pruning work from May to September during EAB flight season to avoid further spread.

s emerald ash borer (EAB) flight season approaches, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is educating residents about EAB, the importance of early detection and what to do if it is found.

DA is in the process of hosting a series of free, The MDA field hourlong EAB fi eld workshops throughout the state to provide people a firsthand look at EAB-infested trees and assist communities in becoming familiar with early detection. The workshops, which are provided free of charge through support from the U.S. Forest Service, cover general EAB biology, distribution, management, regulation and treatment.

“We want people to know how to correctly identify EAB in their own yard, or if they are visiting a location, and to know how to properly report infested trees that they may find,” said presenter Jonathan Osthus of MDA. “The more eyes we have out there that can see this, properly detect it and report it through the proper channels, better management outcomes happen. That can reduce the rate of spread in a given area and give communities more time ... It is not a matter of if, but when.”

EAB was first discovered in the U.S. in Detroit, Michigan, in 2002. In 2009, it was discovered in St. Paul about a mile away from the state fairgrounds. Agrilus planipennis, more commonly called EAB, is a serious invasive tree pest. Consequently, it is regulated by the MDA Plant Protection Division in an effort to slow the spread of the insect to other areas of the state yet to be impacted. According to the MDA, EAB has now been confirmed in 22 counties in Minnesota, 35 states and five Canadian provinces.

Adult EAB beetles are active from May through September and typically emerge around the end of May/ early June, or when the lilacs start to bloom. Damage to trees is caused by the beetle larvae, not the adult beetles.
