Bayport celebrates the fall season with Harvest Fest BY MADELINE DOLBY STAFF WRITER
People’s Congregational Church in Bayport has hosted Harvest Fest for over 20 years. The event brings different communities together, and it is one that many people look forward to every year. People from Bayport, Stillwater and even Woodbury come to spend time together over all-you-can eat soup and bread followed by all-youcan eat chili. “It’s mostly about the community coming together and sitting around the tables and just catching up,” said Sue Favilla, a Harvest Fest committee member. This year’s Harvest Fest will be at 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. on Nov. 18, with an important change: It will be hosted by United Church, the new congregation recently formalized through the merger of People’s Congregational Church with St. Peter’s United Church of Christ (UCC) in Stillwater. UCC had about 25 to 30 active members, while People’s Church had about 69 active members. Harvest Fest features artisans from around the area. This year, eight artisans will be featured at

the event. The vendors are selected by the church and committee. There will be a bake shoppe and a 50/50 raffle. Last year, Harvest Fest featured six different musicians and 24 artisans. There also was a silent auction, which will be back again this year due to its popularity. “We decided, ‘Okay, where do we want to put our primary energy?’”
Favilla said. “We decided that we would put it into the silent auction this year.” The silent auction will have food, artwork and gift baskets that attendees can bid on. “There are vendors in the area that really love to sell their wares,” Favilla noted. “It is very busy, fun and kind of loud. That’s the fun part.”
There are popular vendors that continue to return to Harvest Fest. Local vendor J. Klasen sells raspberry jam, homemade maple syrup, and honey from her beehives. United Church is located at 309 Third St. N., Bayport.

In Minnesota, volunteerism goes up by almost 50 percent during the months of November and December leading up to the holidays. Volunteering is the easiest way for a community to make a difference. Time spent as a volunteer can align with one’s time, expertise and passions. Forest Lake Lions Club members know this on a personal level. Marc Harshman, the club’s second vice president, has been coordinating a holiday toy drive for the last six years in cooperation with Menards in Forest Lake and Forest Lake Area Schools. The Forest Lake Lions Club is a local community service organization whose members are a part of the International Association of Lions Clubs. The goal of the Lions Club is to work toward bettering the lives and wellbeing of all people in the community through education, research programs and community events. The group focuses on volunteer projects: 100% of proceeds made at these events are given back to the Forest Lake community. Beginning in November, Harshman will coordinate with the counselors in the school district. School counselors work with parents, the schools and a couple of outside contacts to identify families and children in need before the holidays. volunteers and go and get some gifts and gift certificates for older kids.” School counselors then help distribute the toys, gifts and gift certificates to the families in need. The gift wrap is donated by club members, while gifts are sorted and wrapped by older students in the district. Depending on the situation, the gifts can be wrapped by youth volunteers or simply given to needy families, whose identities are kept confidential from student volunteers. “Last year, it took four Chevy pickup truckloads to bring the toys into the counselors’ rooms,” Harshman said. The toy drive will run from November to around the middle of December. Drop-off boxes for the toy drive will be located at Forest Lake Area Schools and Menards in Forest Lake. The Lions ask that only new toys be donated. The club also accepts gift cards. The drop-off box in Menards is located at the exit doors. Harshman also helps coordinate a food drive with Menards in March. Half of the food donated will go to Community Helping Hand Food Shelf; the other half goes to Family Pathways. The Lions will also donate directly to those organizations so they can purchase what is needed. For more information about the Forest Lake Lions Club, one can email forestlakelions.mn@gmail.com.

storage rental facilities. Maybe it’s time to sell something and use the cash to reduce your debt. It’s pretty simple to say spend less than you earn, but that’s a clear way to get out of debt. We buy a monthly Internet service and use TV over the air. Some weekends we don’t get all the football game that we would like. We hear from friends there are some channels we are missing that they enjoy. But we’re getting along. We drive our cars longer than the average and we make sure they get regular service. We don’t let mechanical problems linger. They never get better. I think we have to learn to be content with what we have and not be envious of others. Happiness cannot come from what you own. Too many toys can also consume your time in repairing them, and affect your budget and time. Even the stock market is suffering these days. Maybe it’s time to look at CDs or treasuries. Sometimes it’s better to earn 5% rather than speculating on 8% to 12%. Be a smart shopper. Compare prices and benefits. There are times during the year when prices are reduced on certain types of clothing, furniture and cars. When you buy a new car, it depreciates very quickly. Inflation hurts everyone We hear about a lot of people who are past the age of retirement. With the increase of inflation, they have been returning to part-time jobs, and even some full-time with success. They carry with them experience and a strong work ethic. With inflation doubling the prices of food, energy costs that keep climbing, mortgage rates that are slowing housing growth and increasing living expense, it’s hard to make ends meet. With the auto workers on strike along with other striking workers in healthcare, etc., that will drive up costs even though they are due for adjustment. It becomes like a self-serving merry-go-round. Busy people on the move have demanded more prepared foods compared to home-cooked meals. It’s convenient, but it is driving up the cost of food. There is a strong desire to dine out. Again, it saves time, it’s convenient and provides a multiple of choices. The question is how often is it practical for the family budget? Climbing interest rates affect credit card debt, car payments, and mortgage payments, now at a 15-year high. Maybe there’s a difference between what we want and what we need. Do you need advice on how to reduce your debt? When you borrow, you are a slave to the lender. Having credit card debt with 24% interest doesn’t make it easier. Are you collecting too much stuff? There seems to be a lot of
My first child
y first baby is about to turn 10 Oct. 25. She is about 70 lbs of pure fluff and the sweetest soul you will ever meet. Frosty was my college graduation present to myself. I remember searching online for puppies when I stumbled across an add on Craigslist. She was the cutest little polar bear I had ever seen and I knew I had to have her. At the time, I didn’t even know what kind of dog she was. (She is a white German shepherd.) My fiancé (now husband Patrick) and I brought her home during my college final exams. It wasn’t the best timing, because all I wanted to do was cuddle and play with my new polar bear and not study for my tests. After finals week was over, I remember showing up on my parents’ doorstep with a cute little fluffball in my arms. You should’ve Out and seen their reaction when they opened up the door to find her. It was About priceless. Frosty has been with us through Shannon so much. She was there for me when Granholm it took six months to land my first journalism job. She was there for me when I got married. She was there for me when my father passed away. And she was there for me when I had my first human child. She has seen so many changes, from all of our moves from northern Minnesota, to southern Minnesota to the north metro. I wish time would just slow down. I know I’m running out of time with her and I’m not ready to let her go. Around a year ago, we started to notice Frosty was falling over more and we would catch her dragging a foot every now and then. She has always been a bit clumsy so we thought maybe that was just accelerating as she aged. We brought it up at her annual vet visit, and their best guess was that it was arthritis or degenerative myelopathy (DM). We learned as her condition worsened, that it was DM, which is disease that affects the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. DM is similar to some of the forms of human ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It has been so devastating to watch. It started out with dragging her feet. We purchased booties so she wouldn’t make her paws bleed. Then as time went on, her legs seemed to get weaker and weaker to the point where she couldn’t get up and down the stairs and we purchased a harness to carry her. We also got her wheels, and although that works great for our outdoor time, it doesn’t work well with our split-entry. Now it has gotten to the point where she has trouble making it to her water dish, and often can’t make it outside before she has to go to the bathroom. I’m not ready to say goodbye to the best soul I’ve ever known. I know her 10th birthday will be the last birthday we get to spend with her. I am going to do everything in my power to make sure it is the “best day ever” for her. The day will be filled with outdoor time, puppy lattes, steak dinner and a pupcake for dessert. She will get to open a present, which she can do all by herself. I will shower her with love and make more memories until I can’t anymore.

piraling inflation and the shortage of employees are just two big issues affecting our economy. The other item is the cost of government on local, state and national levels. It starts with the shortage of employees. Some of it started with COVID. Parents stayed home to care for their children and haven’t returned to the workforce. The other is the high cost of day care. A few years ago, government set the minimum wage and it was probably needed. Gene They also set Johnson other standards that made it difficult for a mother to care for two or three children at her home. At this point in time, it doesn’t look like there is any relief in sight for increasing the workforce here in the U.S. We are receiving immigrants crossing the borders illegally, but it will take some time before they learn the language, get a driver’s license, reestablish their family and gain the technical skills that are needed. No doubt there will be a number of jobs they can fill successfully. I don’t know solutions to all of this, but if our Congress could stop all the infighting, maybe they could take time to solve some of these problems.

Wheels start turning, now an adaptive bicycle fleet BY MADELINE DOLBY STAFF WRITER
It started when a kid wanted to give his mother a bicycle. Matthew Stepiak, one of the co-founders of Limitless Cycling, wanted to give his mom the opportunity to go on a bike ride again after she suffered a stroke in 2018. When Stepiak was trying to fit an adaptive bike for his mom, he decided to shift his attention from what she couldn’t do to what she could accomplish. Stepiak and his mother looked into adaptive bicycles. They found an adaptive bicycle and took it for their first bike ride, with an unexpected result. “The first time that we were out with her adaptive bicycle, we didn’t get very far,” said Stepiak, “because it was ‘Who are you?’, ‘What is this bicycle?’, ‘Where do I get one?’ and ‘Where can I rent one?’ It immediately became very apparent to Stepiak that there was a need in the community for a way for others like his mom who could get out on a bike, but just needed some help to do so. At the same time, Darren Dobier was working on a way to make his business, DIRO Outdoors, more accessible to the community. DIRO Outdoors provides rental outdoor equipment to those who may not have the funds or access to equipment. Dobier noticed at the state parks that during family outings, older family members were struggling to get into the kayaks or take a bicycle out. After witnessing this, Dobier also started looking into adaptive bicycles. The two had the same activity director at the same senior living center. The director pointed out that Stepiak and Dobier were working on the same project and should collaborate with one another. “We were looking at the same thing, at different angles, but for the same reason,” said Stepiak. “What we are doing is part of a small spoke in a much larger wheel.” Limitless Cycle was formed in 2019. What started out as a simple act of kindness soon grew into something much larger. It has become a passion project for both Stepiak and Dobier. Limitless Cycling is in partnership with Cycling Without Age, another nonprofit that was started over two decades ago in Denmark. Now, Cycling Without Age has expanded to over 50 countries, helping 1.5 million people worldwide.

From left: Darren Dobier and Matthew Stepiak are co-founders of Limitless Cycling .
The bikes used by Limitless Cycling are created by a company called Van Raam, a bike manufactured that is two hours outside of Amsterdam. Van Raam has been building these unique bikes for decades. “We knew that there was a social isolation and loneliness problem around the world, and this was a way to bring those (people) out, who necessarily couldn’t,” Stepiak said. Limitless Cycling offers six different models and mainly works with senior living centers. The most popular model of their bikes is the Chat. The Chat gives people the opportunity to sit side-by-side, chat and enjoy a comfortable bike ride. The most sought-after model is the Veloplus. The Veloplus allows Limitless Cycling to go into the rooms of participants and, with the help of volunteers and caregivers, help residents into a wheelchair to be able to enjoy a bike ride. The fleet will be growing. Right now, the group has two Chats, one Fun2Go, one Veloplus and a FunTrain on the way. The group has funding to add one more Chat to the fleet. By diversifying the bikes that are available, Limitless Cycling will be able to answer the call of both inclusivity and efficiency. More volunteers and riders will be able to join the group on bike rides.
The individuals to which the organization provides bike rides, the families of those individuals, Dobier, Stepiak and the volunteers of Limitless Cycling all benefit from those bike outings. “Something about the activities of being engaged physically and socially is rewarding on such a level for Darren, myself, for our wives, for our volunteers, that there is benefit for everyone,” Stepiak said. Limitless Cycling works with senior living centers and veterans associations facilities. After the rides, organizations can see that residents have benefited greatly from the activity. One example is of a dementia patient, who 48 hours later was recalling the bike ride and how much fun they’d had. “We make it a point to celebrate our veterans,” Stepiak said. “We always try to take a picture with an American flag in the background for them. You can still see the pride.” Many veterans that go on the bike rides with Limitless Cycling are in the senior living communities that the organization works with. The veterans are always wearing their hats and jackets on the ride. They are proud, Stepiak mentioned. “Not only do we peddle bikes, but we listen,” said Stepiak, “I definitely have learned to become a better listener.” The nonprofit works in multiple different counties across the state. Volunteers bring the bikes to Hudson, the St. Croix area, and locations within Washington Dakota counties. People will see the physical bikes on the trails and stop the riders to ask questions. Limitless Cycling volunteers take the time to answer them. Following ride days, organization members see a definite spike in visits to Limitless Cycling’s website. Stepiak never imagined that this organization would grow just from trying to help his mom. His mother, along with Dobier’s mother, both volunteer. By volunteering, their mothers are able to tell the story of their boys, talk to their peers and participate in the events. Stepiak said that watching his mother get out of the nest, grab a clipboard, and let her do what she can do, is the most important part. “It’s an honor to do this,” said Stepiak, “for something that happened so innocently, it grew very organically and it grew rapidly.” Madeline Dolby can be reached by emailing lowdownews@presspubs.com or by calling 651-407-1226.

NOVEMBER 2023 www.presspubs.com
The Stillwater Police Department has found a new way to build strong community relationships. Stillwater Police is starting a new program called Police at Local Schools (P.A.L.S). The partnership will be with Stillwater public elementary schools: Lily Lake Elementary, Stonebridge Elementary and Rutherford Elementary. Each school will have two Stillwater
police officers assigned as a first line of contact for the school. Some of the ways the officers will interact with the students is through classroom visits, lunch and breakfast buddies, recess visits, question-and-answer sessions and even during a ride to school in a squad car provided to a special student. The chosen officers for each school are: Lily Lake Elementary, Officer Ramirez and Officer McBroom; Stonebridge Elementary, Detective LeMoine and Officer Belisle; and Rutherford Elementary, Officer Papke and Officer Gow.
Name: Elliot Johnson Residency: Stillwater How long have you lived in the Stillwater area? I have lived in Stillwater since I was in third grade. What is your favorite memory from third grade? Cleaning Mr. Nolan’s fish tank after school. What’s your hot take for Thanksgiving? Super underrated. I’m gonna be honest. People always hate on it and they skip over it. After Halloween, everybody is always like ‘Oh Christmas! Oh Christmas!’ but Thanksgiving is sweet. Good food. Lots of family.

National Adoption Month: What to know BY MADELINE DOLBY STAFF WRITER
According to the Minnesota Department of Human Services, in Minnesota alone, 6,750 children and young adults are currently in out-of-home care. Currently, 569 of those children need adoptive homes immediately. In general, Minnesota’s waiting children are school-aged; almost half of them are 12-18 years old. Many children live within the seven-metropolitan area: out of the 1,240 children under state guardianships, 728 reside in the Twin Cities. Foster Adopt Minnesota is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1980. The original name of the program was Citizens Collation on Permanence for Children. There is a heavy emphasis on placing children around Minnesota with permanent, loving families as well as educating the community. “With the founding group, it was a mix of advocacyminded, adoptive and foster parents,” said Kim Sacay, outreach and recruitment manager for Foster Adopt Minnesota. “[T]hey collectively had a concern about trauma experienced by Minnesota foster kids, multiple out-of-home placements that were long. There was no collective goal or advocacy goal system in place for reunification, for kinship placement or adoption.” At the time, the founders had created a book about the kids who needed permanent homes in Minnesota. Families interested in adopting would flip through the pages, read the biographies of each child and decide who would be the best fit for their family. Now, Foster Adopt Minnesota has a webpage where individuals can scroll through children who are in need of a permanent family. “Our vision is still the same,” Sacay said, “but how we do it, and what we do, are a lot different.” The organization has added foster care and a kinship program. There is the belief that kinship only runs in familial relationships. But kinship can go beyond the family unit. It is how you recognize the importance of someone in your life. For example, a neighbor, teacher, or coach all can play an influential role in the level of support in a child’s life. On any given day in Minnesota, there can be around 7,000 kids in care. “The primary goal for the majority of those children is reunification with birth families,” said Kim Young, a foster care specialist at Foster Adopt Minnesota. In Minnesota, after 180 days, if a caregiver is not making progress in their case plan, the conversation of finding a permanent home for the child begins to progress. There are about 500 children in Minnesota who need immediate homes because the unification
The Clyde family expanded through Foster Adopt Minnesota. process has been exhausted. When this happens, the process of fostering with plans to adopt starts to form. “The family has to become foster care licensed for the intention of adoption,” said Young. “When a child is placed in their home, it isn’t the same as an adoption would occur in the state of Minnesota. So those children are still under state care. So, the family becomes a foster care licensed with the purpose of becoming a preadoptive home,” she added. There is a 53% chance that children who are older are placed back into their biological homes. About 81% of children under 1 year of age are reunited with their biological families or legal guardians. There are six adoptive agencies in Minnesota. They are all a part of the public-private adoption initiative. These agencies recruit families for the purpose of adopting. So, they license families for foster care with the purpose of adoption and just general foster care. “But primarily, these six agencies are trying to match families with those children that have already been identified as not being able to return home,” said Young. The state covers all the adoption fees for families who work with these six agencies. The adoption process can take anywhere from months to years. The state of Minnesota requires a home study of an approved family to be done within three to four months. From there, approved families will be matched with a child. Depending on the family’s requests, the process can take anywhere from a week to years. The organization offers education for families and the professionals the family works with through informational webinars, podcasts and online recordings.

Foster Adopt Minnesota also has individual support, guidance and resource sharing through its health and permanence services. “That is super helpful to have families that are successful reach out, and we can help guide them a little bit, give them some resources on how they can strengthen their families,” Sacay said. This November, Foster Adopt Minnesota will host an event Nov. 4 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The 26th annual Circus of the Heart will kick off Minnesota’s adoption awareness month. It will honor families who have grown through foster, adoption and kinship care. “It is for foster, adoptive, kinship families, but it’s also for people who are interested in learning more (about adoption),” Sacay said. More information about Foster Adopt Minnesota can be found online at fosteradoptmn.org.
