Round two for Forest Lake Schools Median tax bump big drop from 2014 proposal

FOREST LAKE — Voters in the Forest Lake School District are asked for the second consecutive year to upgrade school buildings, this time via a two-tiered request totaling $161 million. The two bond questions Nov. 3 separate arts and athletics-related improvements from structural and safety upgrades, all together asking voters for
$27 million less than the $188 million proposal defeated in May of 2014. This time around, the annual tax impact on the owner of a median-valued house is significantly less than the jump proposed last year. District Finance Director Larry Martini explained that's partly because existing bonds have already been refinanced and partly due to the elimination of several items requested last year. Those include a new swimming pool, the move of
district offices and features including exterior site work, parking lot projects, a Lino Lakes Elementary classroom addition, improvements to the high school media center, skylights, lockers, a pole shed and auditorium dividers. District officials regrouped last spring after residents voted “No” on the $188 million by a 60 percent margin. The district then asked a task force of parents, residents and staffers to devise a feasible Plan B. The force
advised against expanding Century Junior High and FLAHS in favor of focusing on overall safety, security, ADA compliance, air quality and building integrity. It recommended a much lesser second question addressing arts and athletics improvements. According to the district, facilities are still in dire need of repair and renovation due to years of deferred maintenance from lack of taxpayer support. SEE TAX BUMP, PAGE 10
