Cultivating Christmas at Covered Bridge Farm

Pete Larsen, the owner of Covered Bridge Farm in Forest Lake, has already selected the kind of tree he’ll be cutting down for Christmas. “This year we’re going to have a Blue Colorado,” he said. This particular type of tree is unique in that all of the seedlings appear green, but some of them begin to become blue-tinted at the tips around 5 years of age. This is one of many varieties of fir and spruce grown at Covered Bridge Farm, where Larsen has been selling Christmas trees for 24 years.
The farm has 20 acres of land planted with trees at all stages of development, from 3-year-old saplings to trees that are about 15 years old. Two-and-a-half acres are devoted to blueberries during the summer, and the rest of the land is rented out for hay. Larsen said that the mild weather this year has given the farm a big boost. “It’s been a really good growing season for the trees,” Larsen said. “The late summer had some good rains, and when you’re starting new trees it’s really important for them. And the existing trees got a good drink, too.” The fair weather also bodes well for
customers—Larsen said that he has already had quite a few purchases and predicts that the trees may even be sold out before this weekend “Definitely, milder weather brings more people out,” Larsen said. “Last year never got above 10 degrees, so that has a big impact on whether people are coming out or not.” Larsen said that the farm usually sells 600-700 Christmas trees a year. They grow several varieties of spruce as well as fir trees, although the Frasier firs are not available this year— they were winter-burned in the polar vortex of 2014. According to Larsen,
fir is among the most popular tree species due to its strong, “more Christmas-type” scent. Caring for the trees involves a lot of time-intensive work; besides keeping the grass between rows mowed and clearing the area of weeds, the trees take hours of shearing, or trimming, each summer to give the trees a symmetrical, filled-out appearance. Larsen pointed out that the Forest Lake area has had a long history of tree farms, but he has noticed that not many young people are entering the industry anymore. SEE COVERED BRIDGE, PAGE 10
