STILLWATER — After spending most of her adult life working for St. Paul family business Linder’s Garden Center, Lill Linder wasn’t sure about her next step when the iconic 102-year-old store closed in 2013. For a while the Lake Elmo resident felt a bit conflicted living next door to the former Linder greenhouses that now belong to Gerten’s Greenhouses. But within months she found a new adventure: co-owning and operating the about-togo-out-of-business Tamarack Gallery in downtown Stillwater. Now the 59-yearold entrepreneur and her artist daughter Megan Henderson, 27, are putting their own spin on the gallery, keeping many former exhibitors, recruiting new ones, adding merchandise with lower price points and revving up the marketing plan.
Who knows — they may even add plants, greenery or flower arrangements to the mix. “It’s kind of in my blood — contemplating and toying with containers,” she joked. “I’m toying with container gardening in the spring … or with Christmas pots and spruce.” Linder grew up in St. Paul across the street from the Linder Garden Center, which had been founded by her grandfather Albert Linder in 1910. The Swiss immigrant, a vegetable farmer, started by selling celery from a horse-drawn wagon. As the business expanded into greenhouses and cut flowers and bedding plants, he passed it on to his sons Peter and Walter Linder. When it closed, the business was selling at 53 sites across the metro and encompassed 11 acres on Larpenteur Avenue and a 52-acre site for greenhouses in Lake Elmo.

Lill remembers running across the street as a kid to wait on customers; her dad let her keep half the sales she could make on slower days. After high school she worked locally as a cake decorator before opting to join the family business at age 21. She began to take over administrative and marketing functions, and she her three brothers bought the business in about 1986. Twenty-nine years ago she bought enough acreage in Lake Elmo to house both Linder greenhouses and the 16-acre hobby farm on which she still sustains several horses, a miniature donkey and two goats. But by 2013 the family had decided to shut down Linder, displacing more than 50 regular and 1,000 seasonal employees. Many had worked there for years and “were just like family,” she said.
