Clash of the spatulas: Culinary students compete at fundraiser
BY JULIE KINK CONTRIBUTING WRITER
STILLWATER — Turn up the heat: these chefs are ready to compete. The second annual Feed the Valley Cook’s Challenge, a “Chopped” style cooking competition modeled after the popular Food Network show, is slated for Friday, Oct. 23. The event will take place at the Grand Banquet Hall, Stillwater, hosted once again by KSTP Evening Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl. Pro-
ceeds benefit Valley Outreach. “Last year we had such a great response, people loved the event,” said event coordinator Kristin Kroll. “It’s super high-energy. They loved the entertainment piece of the cooking.” The live competition features culinary arts students from Hennepin Technical College, tasked with creating a dish from mystery ingredients that pleases the judges — with 200 sets of eyes watching. Some are young students looking for the
right vocation, while others are more seasoned cooks embarking on a second career, Kroll said. Three teams of two students each will compete. They’ll have no idea what the ingredients will be until the competition begins. Last year, they worked with items like pork chops, blueberries and fresh spinach. “All the ingredients are secret,” Kroll explained. “Chef Paul Mahoney goes into the food shelf the day of the event, grabs a basket and takes items being offered at the food
shelf that day.” As if that’s not enough pressure, moderator Karl Benson, owner of Cooks of Crocus Hill, will talk to the students, commentator-style, while they’re cooking. “'What do you think of what they’re doing with the pork?' That kind of thing,” Kroll said. Prizes to be awarded to the chefs include a set of knives, a cast iron skillet set and a French cast iron oven. SEE COOK’S CHALLENGE, PAGE 10
