Proactive ordinances

A

s we witness events unfolding throughout our world, it’s human nature to have compassion for people dealing with conflict, tragedy, and security issues; but at the same time we may take comfort in knowing that our neighborhoods here are safe. In fact, we often don’t worry or even think about bad things that could happen in our neighborhoods until they do. Proactive ordinances can protect us.

A week ago last Saturday we received a letter from the Washington County Sheriff informing us that a Level 3 sex offender will be moving into our neighborhood - and we were invited to attend a notification meeting three Publisher’s public days later.

The November 11th issue of the View White Bear Press published this Carter Johnson individual’s photo and details from the public conviction records. The details about this individual’s history can be found in our news pages and online searches.

This situation is happening at the end of my street, and it has been eye-opening. Upon receiving the notification letter our thoughts focused on the implications for our family and our kids to be safe and enjoy a carefree childhood – to play driveway basketball or walk down to the park.

Sex offenders classified as Level 3 are deemed the highest risk to reoffend. Many people have asked if we are scared; of course, this is highly concerning for us and the majority of our neighbors.

We went to the notification meeting, where it was standing-room only. It might be the largest turnout in history at the Birchwood Village Hall. As representatives from the Department of Corrections presented the facts about sex offender laws and classifications, they went into detail about the unregistered sex offenders who live in every neighborhood, rates of recidivism and other statistics. They shared measures we can take to protect our families and how this individual will be under a structured intensive form of supervision, electronic monitoring and both regular and random checks.

The main problem is not the loving family wanting to help a relative; it’s not even the law that requires the DOC to release someone after completing their sentence whether or not they have been rehabilitated; rather it is the DOC’s process and evaluation of where they are placing these Level 3 sex offenders. How can the DOC allow a sex offender-who within the last 90 days was evaluated by them and deemed to be the “highest risk” to public safety and who requires the most intense level of supervision-to live in a residence that is across the street from a community park and a bus stop, and within close proximity to dozens of young girls and a vulnerable adult. It may be legal, but it makes absolutely no sense for high-risk, Level 3 sex offenders to live in this type of setting – whether it’s in our neighborhood or the north side of Minneapolis.

Wyoming is the closest community that has enacted an ordinance to restrict Level 3 sex offenders from residing within a certain distance from schools, parks and bus stops. The Birchwood city council swiftly set a meeting last Sunday night to consider a similar ordinance. I am guessing this will become a common ordinance added to cities throughout our readership area. If this is an important issue for you and your neighborhood, take action. Reach out to your city council members. I have learned that the League of Minnesota Cities reports increased interest from cities with regard to implementation of sex offender restriction ordinances. Further, reforms and laws regarding sex offenders will be addressed in the next legislative session. Contact your state representatives and senators and urge them to enact reforms and laws that make sense and protect our state’s greatest asset – children.

Thanksgiving – easier said than done This is the time of year when we take a break from our regular routines to be grateful for all we have in our lives. For some the hassle of preparing for the holiday makes it hard to stop and be grateful. Others, caught up in the Christmas buying spree hype, loose focus on the intent. Even the added pressure to feel grateful can be distracting.

While gratitude is good for us, it sometimes seems like Brussels sprouts on the Thanksgiving table.

We take a taste because we know we should, but we don’t plan on making it a daily activity.

So why aren’t we more grateful?

Overloaded schedules, conflicts at home, at work, in our community, and in the world don’t help. Access to a 24/7 news and social media network that often thrives on negativity can drive out

any grateful feelings. A natural response is a need to take cover, protect ourselves and our resources, and shut others out so we can protect our own. That’s not what Thanksgiving is about and it’s not how we should lead our lives throughout the rest of the year.

Turn off the screens. Taking a break from television and social media can boost your mood and divert your attention to your friends and family. Face-to-face connections with loved ones are usually much more emotionally satisfying and sustaining than online ones.

Count your blessings – literally.

The simple practice of writing down ten things to be grateful for can be a quick way to refocus your mind on the positive when it feels overloaded by the negative.

While having a year-round attitude of thankfulness doesn’t negate the painful realities of the world around us, it does give us more energy to do something about those problems we can affect and shield our selves from those we can’t. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude as a daily feast rather than a once a year “ought to” experience, takes work but it is worth it.

Q: What do you think will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? Feel free to mention overall strengths and/ or talented individuals.

A: This year’s gymnastics team has a lot of spirit and a lot of heart. Lead by captains Zoey Torgerson and Allison Edwards, the girls have been coming to practice with smiles on their faces, ready to work. Beam and floor are events to watch this season, with many girls performing high level skills. This year’s team is fairly young, but full of talent that should develop over the next several years. Returning varsity gymnasts will be competing along with newcomers Gabby Walrath and Hailey Nenn, and overall we have a very strong group of girls.

Q: Who are your captains?

A: Zoey Torgerson and Allison Edwards Q: What competition are you most looking forward to, and why?

A: In terms of competitions, this is my first year with the team, so I do not have a specific competition I’m looking forward to.

Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about?

A: The girls are currently hosting a Mini-Gym, gymnastics clinic on Monday nights, November 16-December 7. On our first night, we had 35 girls show up to learn new skills. The girls and the young gymnasts had a great time!

A: I believe our team’s greatest strengths will be our athleticism and ability to play in the open floor. We have many players who are very talented, quick and have great length. Our strengths will be pushing tempo and running in transition and looking to press and trap on the defensive end. We also have an extremely hard working, disciplined group of girls who understand the importance of team.

Q: What do you think will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? Feel free to mention overall strengths and/or talented individuals.

A: Our Teams strength this year is going to be the ability to rely and on the hard work they have put in over the past few seasons. We also have a good number of guys out this year averaging 40 wrestlers at practice each day. The willingness to work hard and learn from mistakes is another strength of this team and goes along way in wrestling. I am looking for great performances this year out of several of our guys with multiple years of experience. Leading the way will be Nic Norem. He is in his second year as captain and has done everything needed to have a very successful senior campaign. I believe he is going to turn heads this year across the State.

This is his team and his teammates trust and look up to him. Pat Kasl is our heavyweight and another one of our guys who is bound for success this season after making a big splash in his first year wrestling last season. Everyone is well aware of Pat’s success on the football field. We believe he will make his mark in wrestling this season as well. Leo Janssen is another senior who has paid his dues in the sport and is going to have a breakout year. Jason Delgado is also a senior and will be successful if he fully commits and applies himself. A few underclassmen with experience who are looking to have a great year are: Hunter Nolan, Remy Brisbois, Max Amman, Troy Pleski, Grant Yearling, Grant Parrish, Ben Niemczyk, Chase Carlson, Mathias Waskey and Tanner Wiese.

A: The competitions we are looking forward to the most include opening our conference schedule at home vs. Stillwater on December 3 and going to Fargo for the Rumble on the Red tournament with J.V. and Varsity.

A: We have Alumni Night on December 3 beginning @ 6:00pm

FOREST LAKE - RANGERS NORDIC SKI DENO JOHNSON SCHEDULE TO BE DETERMINED Q: What do you think will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? Feel free to mention overall strengths and/or talented individuals.

A: The Nordic program this year will have a few older kids with State experience guiding a fleet of younger excellent athletes.

As is the program tradition the hard work ethic has been passed on to the younger skiers and success should follow.

Both teams are ranked amongst the best in the State per the usual. The boys are defending State back-to-back champs.

Most of the girls team is back that took 5th last year. Experience will be key.

Q: Who are your captains?

A: We have 4 Captain-Elect. Davis Long. Madi Anderson , Lexis Wedell , Kate Schaaf.

Q: What competition are you most looking forward to, and why?

A: State Championship is the top race on the calendar every year.

Q: What do you think will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? Feel free to mention overall strengths and/ or talented individuals.

A: 9th grader Gretchen Sharp finished the season last year as a member of the All State Elite team, which is composed of the five gymnasts in classes A and AA with the top All Around average scores. She was also a State meet participant on Vault, Beam and Floor. 10th grader Danielle Keran is also a returning varsity All Around gymnast. Danielle nearly missed a spot to the State Meet on Beam last year, placing 5th in our section. She has worked hard in the off season, increasing her difficulty on her events, especially on beam. Senior Alex Holmberg returns as one of our strongest Vaulters and on Floor. We also have returning 10th grader Lauren Thole from last year’s varsity team. Lauren has also worked to upgrade her difficulty and score potential, especially on bars. We also have several talented new gymnasts. Junior Linnea Rustad, Sophomore Maria Landheer and 9th grader Sami Chang all come with high-level competitive club experience and will factor into our Varsity team.

Q: Who are your captains?

A: Our captains are Senior Alex Holmberg and Juniors Haley Tholen and Annie Seiler.

Q: What competition are you most looking forward to, and why?

A: We have a very strong conference, so our conference dual meets are always challenging and exciting. One of the high lights of our season is an invitational at Gustavus Adolphus College, which involves high school teams who have Gustavus alumni coaches (I graduated from GAC). We stay over night in Mankato, so it is a fun competition and a team-bonding weekend. The Lakeville Invitational is always one of the highest-level meets in the State, and, of course, we build through the season to the Section Meet where we hope to contend.

Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about?

A: We are again participating in a fundraiser in partnership with Rose Floral of Stillwater. We are selling gift cards for $20 that are good for 1 free floral bouquet each month for a year, or $10 off a $30 purchase once a month for a year. The Forest Lake FFA was also given a two star ranking in the 2015 National Chapter Award Program. The program recognizes outstanding FFA chapters from throughout the country that successfully complete an annual set of required activities that encourage members to grow as individuals, work as a team and serve others in their communities.

Forest Lake graduate Mariah Daninger, now the Minnesota FFA State Secretary, served as an official delegate at this year’s annual meeting. In this role, Daninger participated in important conversations during business meetings that will direct the work of the National FFA Organization during the next year.

Ten members of the Forest Lake FFA Chapter joined a record breaking crowd at this year’s convention which welcomed more than 65,000 student members, teachers, alumni and guests. Attendees participated in motivational sessions, personal development workshops, and career success activities. The chapter was prominently recognized with several members earning national honors.

Ben Plautz (2014 graduate) earned his American FFA Degree. The American FFA Degree is bestowed upon a select group of students in recognition of their years of academic and professional excellence.

Former tennis star hopes to be film star 1.

How might locals and fellow MHS grads remember you?

The people of Mahtomedi (Go Zephyrs!), when they hear my name, will immediately think: “that girl who was good at tennis and sang a lot.” I actually didn’t do much acting in high school. Our tennis team was really good and I made the high school team in seventh grade, so I made sure I was training yearround. My whole family is really into tennis, so we spent most of our time traveling around so my brother and I could compete in tournaments all over the country.

I’ve been singing since I could walk, so high school was the time that I really started to plug myself in to the performance aspect of it. I was singing everywhere ... weddings, funerals, in the band at church, fundraisers for the school, the State Fair ... anywhere I could. I even recorded an album my senior year (which limited people have gotten their hands on and it will remain that way).

2. How did you start in acting?

KELLY STADUM Age: 26 Hometown: Mahtomedi Education: 2007 graduate of Mahtomedi High School Current location: Los Angeles Quick bio: Kelly had a deep love for performing as a child and did whatever she could to be on stage, whether it was to act or sing. She attended college at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and focused her attention on theatrical performance and playing competitive tennis. She majored in broadcasting and minored in theater performance. Kelly also won two Division III intercollegiate state titles in tennis.

She was seen in several performances including “Shakespeare in Hollywood,” “Dog Sees God” and “Impassioned Embraces.” After graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film. She landed roles in several films, including the lead role of Becky in “Breaking and Entering.” She also co- created and starred in a short film titled “89,” and is attached to an hourlong family drama pilot, “True Colors,” set to shoot in 2016. She will play the role of Mandy Kowalcyzk, a sweet and popular high school cheerleader who is dealing with a lot more in her home life than what meets the eye.

Was there a local experience that had the most influence on your motivation and/or career?

My pediatrician determined I would be an actress by the time I was a year old. He had never seen such an intensely dramatic scene trying to give a toddler a shot, so he nicknamed me “Scarlett O’Hara” and alerted my parents that my future would probably involve the dramatic arts. In all seriousness, I knew I wanted to act since the age of 7, and it was an experience in my fi rst year of middle school that sealed the deal.

My best friend at the time had convinced me to audition for the school play “Annie.” It was the fi rst time I had ever auditioned for anything and I was super intimidated by the whole experience. I was surrounded by girls two years older than me who could sing like nobody’s business. But I went in there and gave it my all, and ended up snagging the lead role. My fi rst experience on that stage, horrifically-dyed curly wig and all, was mesmerizing. Every performance was like being electrocuted with the most extreme joy.

3. What are your overall career goals?

My overall career goal is to win an Oscar or a Golden Globe, mainly so I can rap the lyrics to my acceptance speech on national television.

Either one will do! But right now I’m focused on building and maintaining a career that centers around integrity and passion. I already feel that what I get to do is such a gift, so my main concern is coming together with the wonderfully talented people around me to tell stories and give people out in the world something to relate to.

4. What is the highlight of your career thus far?

I’ve had so many moments where I’ve stopped dead in my tracks and wondered how I got so lucky to be doing this, like being able to be in a small dinner scene with Michelle Rodriguez in “1%ers” (coolest chick on the face of the earth, by the way) but the highlight of my career so far has to be a short fi lm I recently wrapped titled “89.”

talented local cinematographer, and he enlisted the help of producer Alex Kohnstamm ... and we put our heads together and came up with an idea for a dramatic short. I flew back to Minnesota and we fi lmed it, and it was the most incredible experience.

We shot most of the fi lm in my childhood home, and the other bits were shot in my brother’s car. Friends of ours came and stayed for hours to play extras in a party scene. Every person involved with “89,” from the camera crew to the make-up people to the sound-guy, gave 100 percent of their attention and effort to the fi lm and never complained. It was this experience that made me realize that everything we ever do is about relationships. It’s about working with people to create something great. It’s a team effort to make a fi lm truly magical, and there are so many people behind the scenes who work so much harder than they ever get credit for. The story becomes everyone’s baby. The fact that I have small fi lm festivals contacting me in Los Angeles already to get ahold of the fi lm is just the icing on the cake.

5. What has been most rewarding about your career path to date and what has been most challenging?

There’s no doubt that being an actress requires a warriorlike mentality. It has challenged every cell

of my character. And with that, it’s forced me to discover who I truly am as a person and the role I want to play on this earth. The greatest reward has been my own self-discovery and the newfound ability to appreciate the small things. When you spend so much time researching a character ... her general emotions, fears, behavior patterns, relationships with others ... you start to gain new perspective on the world and begin to understand that there are different angles to every human experience. I’ve grown to have richer relationships and a heightened awareness because of being an actress, and I have a greater empathy and respect for people in general. I also have a more substantial regard for emotions. I used to get frustrated with myself for being so sensitive, but I’ve learned that emotions are the very essence of our being and we’re meant to feel things deeply. I deal with rejection more now than I’ve ever dealt with it in my life, but I allow myself to live through all of it fully. It’s essential for my work and personal growth.

As for the challenges, those present themselves frequently. Like I said, the rejection is overwhelming, but I made a choice early on to be stronger than that. Quitting is not an option SEE KELLY STADUM, PAGE 15

for me. I always get back on my feet, get myself an iced coffee with cinnamon from Starbucks, and get back to work. L.A. is where the opportunity is, and you have to be a boss. Every actor who has an amazing career started from ground zero and kept going. The greatest struggle for me has been on the more personal side — missing out on important things at home because I’m fi lming or auditioning.

Not being able to attend weddings, funerals, or events that are important to my friends and family ... that’s been rough.

6. What might surprise readers about the acting profession or what is it like to be you?

What may surprise people about the acting profession is that it’s largely based off of how you market yourself. It’s a business. I got the opportunity to hang around publicists and producers in my early days in L.A., and they pushed over and over again that industry professionals like to hire those whom they know, like, and trust ... so it’s your job as the artist to make sure that they know, like and trust you. It’s all a balancing act, because being an artist is so incredibly personal, and you have to combine that with the objectivity of business.

7. Are you making a living in acting — it's highly competitive after all — or do you have to supplement with a part-time job?

I’m not completely supporting myself with acting just yet. I have a side job and I’m also working at my acting school to pay for my training. The percentage of actors in the industry actually working is only about 4 percent. I intend to be within that 4 percent, but it’s a work in progress. I’m fortunate that my bosses are amazing and quite flexible with my schedule. Not a lot of jobs are happy with you taking a month off to go shoot a fi lm, but I got lucky.

8. What's in your five-year plan careerwise?

I defi nitely have certain milestones I’m gunning to achieve in the next five years. I’ve always been someone to expect a lot of myself, and this is no exception. My fi rst goal is to guest star on “Grey’s Anatomy” (I set that goal 12 years ago when it began), “Once Upon a Time,” and “Bones.” I am a longtime fan of all three of them, so I would very much enjoy being in them. I would like to be traveling around the world fi lming so frequently that I don’t live in a particular time zone. I want to work with the greats ... actors and directors who are so talented that I feel like I’ll pass out in their presence. That overwhelming feeling of being unable to measure up is what will propel me to do my best work.

9. Do you have advice for area students considering a career in acting?

I have such a soft spot for young actors. Here is what I would say: You have enough people telling you it’s going to be tough, but just know that you are more than capable. Your potential is truly remarkable. The possibilities are endless for you.

blue. Be the person that would much rather build from the bottom up, learning as you go. Stay humble and help each other.

And I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to surround yourself with people who cheer you on and make a point to celebrate your dreams and successes with you.

The best thing you can ever do for yourself is ridding your life of people who darken your outlook or refuse to acknowledge your greatness. You have to make your dream and your success more important than people who feel threatened by it.

Acting is about the art. If you make it about something else ... money, fame, or recognition, it’s going to be an empty experience for you. But if you make it about the work and about the adventure, amazing things will present themselves right in front of you.

10. What do you like to do when you're not working? Where do you live? Do your parents still live in Mahtomedi? What are their names? How often do you come home?

My mom’s name is Cathy and she’s an O.R. nurse at Regions Hospital, as well as a fulltime personal therapist to me. She still lives in Mahtomedi with our two dogs Stewart and Bentley. My dad’s name is Kent and he’s the regional vice president for Transamerica/tennis fanatic.

He lives in White Bear Lake and is a celebrity in his own right in the WBL tennis community.

My younger brother Peter just graduated from college. He has no interest in acting whatsoever.

He’s actually very logical and extremely talented at math.

I will say this about my parents ... I was extremely fortunate to have such a strong support system growing up. They always made sure my brother and I were playing sports and involved in group activities so that we learned how to work as a part of a team. The reason I was able to so fearlessly jump into this career was because they never stopped believing in me. They never stopped telling me that I could achieve whatever I wanted to.

I live in Studio City, California. It’s hard to talk about what I do when I’m not “working” because I feel like I’m always “working” somehow. When you get into the “entertainment industry groove,” you’re always thinking about something pertaining to your career. It’s hard to tear yourself away when you love what you’re doing so much and you’re always looking to push to the next level.

I do love to hike. Fryman Canyon in Studio City is my favorite. Oftentimes you’ll fi nd me in Malibu, walking up and down the beach with my iced coffee and taking in the waves. It’s my escape zone. I have a small, select group of friends whom I love to meet for coffee in Hollywood and go on little adventures.

I love to write, and I’m hoping to get up to Big Bear for the fi rst time this year so I can snowboard (an-

other one of my many passions).

I love coming home to Minnesota whenever I can to see my family. I am a smiling geek from the minute I step off the airplane because Minnesota Nice is really a thing, and it’s something I truly cherish.

Minnesota will always be my fi rst love.

11. Do you miss anything about Mahtomedi or Minnesota?

California has its perks, but Minnesota is where my heart will always be. I miss the seasons (especially fall), the clear air and the people. Without fail, I am able to start a friendly conversation wherever I go in Minnesota. In L.A., it’s quite different.

People are always in a frantic rush and fear the eye contact. It’s a little game I play. As I pass by a stranger in L.A., I like to look them in the eye and smile. It really freaks them out.

I’m convinced that Minnesota is home to the best, hardest-working people in the country. My neighbor mows my mom’s lawn and plows our driveway in the winter, just because. People in front of you at Dunn Brothers will anonymously pay for your coffee. Teachers that I had growing up will reach out just to see how I’m doing. I couldn’t be happier or prouder that I was raised in this state.

12. When did you move to L.A.? Do you like sunny California?

I moved to Los Angeles in 2012. I’ve moved around the city about four times, but now I’ve found a nice spot in Studio City and I don’t think I’m going to budge for a while.

I compare my relationship with L.A. to a relationship with a human being. It’s very love/hate.

The sun is always out, there are palm trees everywhere, being a health nut is encouraged (fabulous for someone who has a hefty combo of food allergies, like me), and there’s a Starbucks every square mile. I’ve been able to converse one-onone with some of my favorite actors and actresses because they’re just around, and the ocean is only a half-an-hour away. The opportunities here are endless, and this city is where the magic happens.

That being said, we have our off days. The traffic is nauseating all-day, every day, and I fi nd that a majority of the people are quite impatient and not as friendly. Multiply that by 10 when they get in their cars ... But I try to consider that everyone is facing a battle that I know nothing about. I have mad respect for anyone who has moved here for their dream and is sticking it out.

L.A. has built me into so much stronger of a person than I was three years ago. It has beat me down, dragged me, and taught me some tough lessons. But when I pull myself back up and get on my feet, it has presented me with amazing opportunities and introduced me to people and places I will be forever grateful for. I owe a lot to this city.

My projects coming up: I recently secured the role of Mandy in an upcoming family drama pilot titled “True Colors.” We’re working on securing funding, but the storyline is so rich and is already hitting people.

It’s a story about a group of LGBT teens in the suburbs of NYC living in the ’90s struggling with their sexuality. It’s the fi rst hourlong drama to focus exclusively on LGBT teens and the struggles they faced during a time when it wasn’t so socially accepted. We’re gearing up a campaign to get this project on its feet in the upcoming months.

I’ll also be returning to Minnesota in December to shoot another short fi lm, “Frank,” created by the talented Alex Kohnstamm. I’ll be working with the same amazing team that shot “89.”
