Operation No Limits receives new resource room

Operation No Limits isn’t letting COVID-19 limit its impact.

The local nonprofit helps at-risk youth prepare for a successful future by teaching them life skills and helping them engage in volunteer work. Operation No Limits, which began in 2012, partners with Pines School and Anoka County and continues to provide afterschool and summer programming for youth through the pandemic.

Operation No Limits is focusing on career readiness by partnering with Mauer Auto Group to rebuild the program’s resource room, which will be used to develop the students’ resumes.

“The kids range from 9 to 15, and they still need a resume to apply to a place like Cub or Foot Locker. They help us with gardening, cleaning and construction. Everybody wants volunteer experience on a resume,” says Operation No Limits founder and executive director, Lori Kordell.

The once-drab basement now has a fresh coat of paint, new computers and a custom “Operation No Limits” wall sticker in the new digs, thanks to its partnership with Mauer Auto Group.

“We came in to refurbish, and it’s a lot of hard work from employees to provide computers. It’s a complete turnaround,” says Jake Mauer of Mauer Auto Group.

Blaine artist’s passion for art and fellowship flourishes A 16-year-old from Blaine is hoping she can fi ll a void for aspiring artists.

Caydence Arnold, a junior who is distance learning via Centennial High School, wants to establish a weekly community art hangout for teens.

Arnold and her family moved to Minnesota about a year ago from Irondale, Missouri — a town with a population of less than 500. “I moved to Minnesota because I needed more

opportunity to express myself,” she said.

“Since I came to Minnesota, my ideas have been endlessly flowing, therefore I’m always creating something.”

Art has been a passion of Arnold’s. She’s always been interested in anything that stimulates her imagination.

Things you may not know about Martin Luther King Jr.

M

artin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential figures of the 21st century. King's tireless activism during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s improved the lives of millions of people, and his tragic assassination on April 4, 1968, marked one of the darkest days in American history.

King's oratory prowess is welldocumented.

Individuals across the globe are familiar with his "I Have a Dream" speech, which King delivered during the March on Washington less than a year before his death. Less familiar are some other notable facts about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

• If he were alive today, Martin Luther King Jr. would still be years away from his 100th birthday. King was assassinated in 1968, when he was not yet 40 years old. Born in Atlanta in 1929, King could very much still be alive today and would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on January 15, 2022.

• King was an extraordinarily gifted student. At an age when many students were preparing to enter their sophomore or junior year of high school, King began his freshman year of college at Morehouse College.

King enrolled at Morehouse when he was 15 after the school opened enrollment to junior high students in an effort to overcome a dip in enrollment related to World War II. King passed the entrance exam and enrolled in the fall of 1944.

• King was ordained as a minister prior to graduating from Morehouse. The Baptist ministry was something of a family business for the Kings, as Martin Luther King Jr.’s father, grandfather and great grandfather were all Baptist ministers. However, King did not initially intend to follow that path. He ultimately changed course and entered the ministry at age 18, graduating from Morehouse with a degree in sociology a year later.

• King survived a knife attack years before his assassination.

King was stabbed in the chest with a letter opener during a book signing event in Harlem in 1958. His assailant, Izola Curry, was ultimately deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. Though the attack did not kill him, King had to undergo intensive emergency surgery and was hospitalized for several weeks.

• Conspiracy theories surround King’s assassination. King’s assassin, James Earl Ray, was found guilty and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Authorities, including the United States Department of Justice, concluded Ray, a career criminal, acted alone. However, some, including surviving members of King’s family, believed his assassination was part of a conspiracy.

• Despite his tragic assassination in 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. left his mark on the world. That legacy is even METRO CREATIVE | CONTRIBUTED more remarkable when considering the unique twists and turns King’s life took prior to his death.

By fall 2022, a Thrivent Financial will be open to serve customers at the southwest corner of Hodgson Road and Blue Heron Drive in Lino Lakes.

Here are a couple of architect’s renderings of what the Thrivent Financial building will look like in Lino Lakes.

Thrivent Financial could open its doors as soon as next fall if granted the necessary approvals. MTO Properties is seeking approval of a final plat and development agreement to construct a 2,873-square-foot commercial office building on a 1-acre parcel located in the southwest corner of Hodgson Road (CSAH 49) and Blue Heron Drive in Lino Lakes.

City Planner Katie Larsen explained that the outlot was platted in 1985 and zoned for commercial development.

The original commercial concept was a convenience store. In 1996, the council approved a site plan and conditional use permit to build a dentist office on the site, but that project never moved forward.

One resident spoke during the public hearing at the Planning Commission. That individual shared concerns about increased traffic at a location where it is already difficult to make a left turn. Larsen explained that there would be fewer than 10 staff on site at any given time, and on average there would be no more than 15 visitors to the building each day. The Planning Commission unanimously recommended that the City Council approve both the development agreement and final plat.

(The council was expected to vote on the two items at its Jan. 10 meeting, after press deadline.)

Larsen said the developer hopes to begin construction as soon as possible. The building is expected to be fully operational by fall 2022.

Progress continues at the Rookery Activity Center The city of Lino Lakes still plans a “soft” opening of the Rookery Activity Center (RAC), formerly the YMCA building, April 1. Public Services Director Rick DeGardner recently provided some updates, including the news that an aquatics director for the facility would likely be approved by council this month. He also mentioned that the hope is that by March 15, membership signups will be possible via an online platform.

The state testing site is no longer in operation at the site, which allowed for made possible the necessary renovations to transform the former Y into the RAC.

anuary and February are among the greatest times to get outdoors in Minnesota. With the winter solstice behind us there are plenty of things to do with a little extra daylight. Now is the time to try a walk on a snow-covered trail, or break out the cross-country skis or snow shoes.

How about opportunity to try ice fishing is at the 39th annual Centerville Lions Club Ice Fishing contest on Centerville Lake Feb. 19. Sign up for the BEAR’ly Open golf outing Feb. 5, which supports the White Bear Area Food Shelf. Foursomes take to the course on frozen White Bear Lake off of Ramsey County Beach and play 18 holes with a golf club, baseball or whiffle ball bat, hockey stick, tennis racket, or any other tool that can propel a tennis ball into the hole; and sponsors host fun games and activities along the way. It’s a unique event and a good time.

One winter event I will always remember and wish I had my kids was when I was photographing the candlelight ski/hike at William O’Brien State Park when I worked at the Country Messenger newspaper, which served Scandia, Marine on St. Croix and May Township. The park staff lined a trail with luminaries, there were nature demonstrations and kick sleds, and they served hot cocoa with whipped cream. Family events such as this at local parks and nature preserves, along with opportunities for beginners to try snow shoeing, cross country skiing, or kick sledding are plentiful this time of year. Registration fees and equipment rentals are reasonable or sometimes free. At Ramsey County Park’s Tamarack Nature Center ski passes with rental are $10 per person, go to ramseycounty.us/residents/parks-recreation/tamaracknature-center/skiing-snowshoeing. Anoka County Park’s Wargo Nature Center has snow shoe rentals for $5 a pair and cross country skis for $6. Visit the website for updates and the most accurate trail conditions at anokacountyparks.com/things-to-do. Washington County Park’s Afton State Park has snow shoe rentals for $6, but do not rent cross country skis. Visit dnr.state.mn.us/ state_parks/ for more information.

Think about heading to one of the Loppet events coming up, such as the Loppet Winter Festival Feb. 6, the City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival, or the Minnesota Nordic Ski League State meet Feb. 16 and 17 in Biwabik or Wisconsin Nordic Ski League State Meet in Cable, Wisconsin Feb. 12 and 13. Even if you’re not a participant, volunteering or being part of the energy and cheering on the racers as an observer can be a great experience. The volunteer board with the Mora Vasaloppet will Celebrate the 50th year Vasaloppet USA Feb. 12 and 13. This volunteer group has invested countless hours in Vasaloppet Nordic Ski center and now hosts 8 races. From coordination with 100 plus landowners to the latest technology in snow-making equipment, the Mora Vasaloppet offers the best possible race experience. The trails are loaded with a good base and the track is well-manicured.

If it’s your first time back on a snowy trail in a while, take it easy and think of it as a warm up. While you’re out, consider supporting local businesses with a beverage or lunch at one of our local establishments following your winter outing.

Good people Help wanted signs are hard to miss throughout our community. Here at Press Publications we’re thankful for the staff who produce and package the content for our readers. Our team members are dedicated to the community and see the importance on reporting local news you can’t get anywhere else. We filled an open position during the pandemic and have recently filled a vacant part-time position. We have a couple more to go — a multi-media representative and an entry-level graphic designer. Like many businesses in the community, finding candidates has been a challenge. We have posted our positions on sites like Indeed, Facebook, LinkedIn and the print and digital pages of this paper. We were excited to have so many applicants-more than six solid respondents, half of whom learned about the job from this newspaper’s help wanted section. After initially reaching out to each candidate we were able to set up three interviews, one in person and two by Zoom. It has been a while since I have done the initial calls and found the candidates qualifications are amazing. So if your business is in search for good people, remember to keep your job postings in front of the local community in the pages of the Press. ‘Beauty is a fragile gift’

eauty means many different things to people. A hike on a favorite trail in Superior National Forest, holding a baby, time spent in a deer stand, good architecture, good art, or time spent with loved ones and friends.

Modern life is a constant assault on our senses and filled with distractions, but these things and activities connect us with something bigger.

Beauty has an important, necessary, and Legislator foundational role in our lives that we Lingo rarely acSen. Roger knowledge.

The Roman Chamberlain poet Ovid said that “beauty is a fragile gift.” The poet Keats famously wrote, “a thing of beauty is a joy forever.” The transformational nature of beauty necessarily leads to the contemplation of the Divine, the eternal. Emerson wrote, “never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful, for beauty is God’s handwriting.”

He went on to note, that “love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.”

Modern life has, in a way, led us to negate beauty, to deny ourselves the right to it. Look

at “modern” architecture.

Classical buildings have been ignored in favor of extremely utilitarian and tremendously unappealing structures in our major cities. We even have a local television program called “Lost Twin Cities” that documents the lost chapters of our past.

What was lost, exactly?

Specific buildings? Yes of course. But what did they have in common? Transformational beauty. A consequence of modernity is the loss of beauty.

The late English philosopher and writer, Sir Roger Scruton, maintained that beauty is not subjective but objective. He saw it as a universal need.

I agree. Scruton noted that beauty is a remedy for chaos and sorrow; it makes human life worthwhile. Beauty plays an essential role in our mind, body, and soul.

When it comes to design, Scruton suggests that if beauty is considered first, it becomes useful forever. The beautiful is its own endorsement.

A personal matter for people in the White Bear Lake area is the Metropolitan Council’s plan to run 90 busses every day through the heart of the city. While there are many reasons to oppose the bus plan, I believe the primary one is the destruction of beauty. Downtown White Bear is unique, it is personal, it is home. It is designed for people. It is

beautiful. “Change” for its own sake is change that is suspect, if not damaging and deserving of opposition.

Our high-tech, high-speed, instantaneous, commercial, material culture creates massive distractions and noise. It is difficult to extract ourselves from this environment and notice beauty. Indeed, it is often destroyed in the name of “progress.”

Beauty allows us an opportunity to temporarily shut out the noise and connect at a different level with ourselves, each other, and our surroundings.

Reading a good book (on actual paper), holding a baby, gazing at the stars, contemplating art, enjoying a peaceful garden, or sitting at the end of a dock on a secluded lake listening to the wind through the pines: all of these are an encounter with beauty.

Beauty is an essential part of our lives. Beauty is objective.

Beauty is good, it is humanity, it is truth. Roger Scruton suggests perhaps we have lost belief in beauty because we have lost faith in ideas. He believes if we lose beauty, we lose our humanity.

Maybe we simply need to stop and smell the proverbial roses. To allow ourselves to be happy. To be grateful for the beauty around us, seek it and hold on to it.

From no religion to a Master of Sacred Theology

Becoming optimistic during tough times

S

ome days it seems that the tougher the times, the more depressed and scared we become. One thing we may not be appreciating is the impact of outside forces on our attitude, our behavior, and our outlook on life. Maybe it’s time we take control of ourselves and lessen the impact of those trying to manipulate and scare us.

Think about h sources off news and the opinion that are pushing you: pro or anti masks; pro or anti vaccines; pro Biden or pro Trump; the list goes on and on. ‘Like’ a Facebook post or tweet, send a small check, attend a meeting - any activity gets you into their system and the fear marketing starts. Messages and stories supporting what you already believe start showing up, confi rming that you’re right and in the know. And then the worst part starts - they tell you how big a threat the other side is to America, to freedom, to religion, to our way of life. They remind you how mean and stupid

and condescending the other side is, and how they would take our community right down the drain if we let them!

Soon we have neighbor pitted against neighbor, tearing apart a school district or a community. So instead of dealing with the real challenges of education (getting kids ready to compete for jobs in a global economy, dealing with drugs and bullying and other hinderances to a safe and respectful learning environment, etc.) we end up distracted by a political sideshow. That sideshow knows that the more fear they pump into us, the stronger we’ll react to their pleas, vote for ‘their’ candidates, and send money to their cause (and to line their pockets).

Sure, you say, that’s what the ‘other’ side does, but certainly not my side.

Our side is righteous!

Sorry, but each side sees themselves as wellintentioned and secretly knows their success can’t continue without having the other ‘nasty’ side to fight against.

So what should you do in this never-ending and very sad situation? First, take back control of your life. Step out of the spin cycle – skip listening to national news and talk shows, bail out of social media for a while, and avoid the no-win fights over politics and pandemics.

Perhaps most of all, each of us need to give people some grace. Good people are being played on both sides and they have no idea it is happening and that they are actually part of the problem. We all need to be more open and curious, to listen better, to learn the perspective of the other side, and to recognize that ‘our side’ is also being played by the ‘angertainment’ industry.

The path forward out of this mess starts with each one of us. There is no politician or political party that is going to save us, no matter what they say in their marketing materials.

We need to know our neighbors and we need to focus on our communities and schools, not national politics. We need to trust and support the competent staff that manage our public resources in our schools, cities and counties, and we need to get up and walk right out of the room when the elected officials we support start getting partisan and bashing the other side rather than offering reasonable policy solutions.

To say religion wasn’t a part of Meisha Johnson’s fi rst 29 years would be a huge understatement.

Not today. At age 42, the mother of two teenage daughters is closing in on a Master of Sacred Theology on the way to a doctorate — all while employed as the director of Church Mission at St. Joseph of the Lakes in Lino Lakes.

Johnson was raised in Circle Pines and graduated from Centennial High School in 1997. She then spent five years in Sweden before moving back home to the Twin Cities. Later, she moved from the Midwest to the East Coast, where she worked as a television network reporter. She says a spiritual awakening changed her life in a big way: she then gave up her high-salaried position “in order to work for God.” “I just literally was in a blank slate my whole life and wasn’t at all versed in denominational differences,” Johnson recently wrote in “The Catholic Spirit.”

“At that point, I only knew that Jesus Christ was Lord and that I needed him. In hindsight, I was unprepared for how God was about to use my training as a journalist to begin the quest for truth — to begin asking

tougher questions that really mattered. I know I have to do a deep dive into religion.”

This quest led her fi rst to the Bible, which she read cover to cover — it took about six months — then to the front doors of many different churches. Ultimately, it led to her academic “deep dive” of sacred theology.

Her news director in Philadelphia plus friends and family told her she was “crazy,” but that didn’t deter her from her newfound passion.

“But deep in my heart, by the grace of God, not yet understanding the magnitude of the salvific mission, I knew He was up to something great,” she said.

She is looking for a forever family and home. She loves the snow and likes to play outside.

She especially likes to run and play with her black Lab foster sister. There are also two smaller, medium-sized dogs at her foster home that she likes to play with.

Stella, a collie/shepherd mix, is just about a year old and weighs about 54 pounds. She is well behaved, sits nicely for her treats and knows her basic commands.

routine would be really good for her. When she’s not busy running and playing with her foster siblings, she loves to relax and snuggle with her people. She’s housetrained and can even be left alone in the home when her foster family is out.

Saints of Swing to perform Come dance and listen to the Saints of Swing Saturday, Jan. 22, at St. Joseph of the Lakes Catholic Church in Lino Lakes. PUBLIC SAFETY BRIEF Plane crashes in Forest Lake At 3:08 p.m. Jan. 1, the Forest Lake Police Department responded to a report of a small aircraft that had crashed in the swampy area southeast of the I-35 and Highway 8 intersection. Forest Lake Fire also responded.

The pilot and lone occupant of the aircraft was located and was found to be uninjured. The crash is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Centennial picked up league wins over Maple Grove and Anoka last week, ripping the nets for 17 goals, and extended their win streak to four games. The Cougars are 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Northwest Suburban Conference.

“It’s been a huge week for the boys,” acknowledged coach Ritch Menne.

“This group has always been good, and they are just starting to tap their potential. We are getting scoring from a lot of different players, solid defense, and terrific goaltending.”

The Cougars tripped Maple Grove 6-2 at home Thursday, going 2-for-3 on power plays with Peyton Blair and Harper Searles delivering those goals.

Drake Ramirez, Brock Carls, Cade Anderson, and Owen Van Tassel also scored against the Crimson (7-4-1).

Anderson and Brody Pass each made two assists and Jack Fuller notched 18 saves.

In the Cougars’ 11-0 rout at Anoka (5-8) on Saturday, notching two goals each were Pass, Brock Carls, Ramirez and Searles, with one each by Blair, Sam Menne, and Austin Petersen.

The Cougars beat Blake 6-2 on Dec. 30 to fi nish 2-1 in the B.I.G. Tradition in Bloomington. Scoring were Blair (twice), AJ Carls, Searles, Pass and Van Tassel (empty net).

“I’m really excited to see what this group does over the next couple months,” Menne said. “They’re driven to make a return trip to the X.”

ASPIRING ARTISTS: Centennial teen aims to create safe space for local artists FROM PAGE 1

Arnold says she has always had a passion for art and fellowship, but couldn’t quite figure out how to combine those two. A few weeks ago, she started to look for community art groups in Minnesota, but she wasn’t able to fi nd any specific groups for teen artists. She also wasn’t able to fi nd any free options, either.

“I want to create a safe environment where teen aspiring artists can come and express themselves in any way they see fit, and at the same time be able to talk freely and have conversations about what they are creating,” she said. “I’m trying to create a positive, judgement-free group that is open to any teenager in the area who has a love for art.”

In the beginning, the weekly group would meet at Arnold’s home, where she and her mother are turning their large finished basement into

a “hangout lounge.” Down the road, depending on the interest of group members, members could take turns hosting.

Artists should plan to bring whatever project they are working on at the moment, along with all the supplies they need. Arnold said she will provide plenty of snacks, beverages, movies and music.

Get ready for the Winter Olympics with a learn-to-curl session Four Seasons Curling Club will offer four days of an Olympic Learn to Curl Open House in January and February to help people increase their enjoyment of watching the sport during the Winter Olympics in Beijing, Feb. 2-20.

The Olympic Learn to Curl Open House is an introduction to curling that can change how people view the sport, according to John Benton, 2010 Olympian and director of curling operations.

“With every Winter Olympics, we see public interest rise in curling,” Benton said. “Experience curling for yourself at our open house, and you’ll see the Olympic sport and athletes with a whole new appreciation.”

There are eight opportunities over four dates to sign up for one hour of instruction with a small group to learn the basics. Slide, sweeping and an overview on how the game is played will be covered. Included is an appetizer buffet, prepared by Moe’s Ice House.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer took a phone call report regarding missing items in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Dec. 28. It was determined to be a non-criminal situation. The “pirates” involved were given resources.

• An officer took a threat report in the 500 block of Hawthorn Road Dec. 28. The officer determined no crime had occurred, and the complainant wanted a report on fi le.

• A community service officer took a phone call regarding a possible ordinance violation in the 6700 block of East Shadow Lake Drive Dec. 28.

The officer checked the location and determined there wasn’t a violation at that time.

• Officers responded to a report of an unresponsive person in a vehicle on Lake Drive and Apollo Drive Dec. 28. The vehicle was gone when the officers arrived.

• Officers responded to a personal injury accident on Lake Drive and 79th Street Dec. 28. The victims were evaluated by medics.

Two of the three involved vehicles were towed from the scene and one person was issued a citation.

• Officers located a vehicle which had slid off the road in the 800 block of Birch Street Dec. 29. Officers provided emergency lights until the vehicle was moved back onto the road.

• Officers responded to assist an officer from a neighboring agency who was struggling with a suspect in the 4600 block of Rosemary Way North Dec. 29. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

• While on patrol, officers observed a vehicle parked on the side of the road for an extended period of time with its lights on in the 7500 block of Village Drive Dec. 29. Contact was made with the occupants, and it was determined that there were no problems.

• While patrolling on I-35W, an officer saw an occupied vehicle in the center median Dec. 29. State Patrol arrived and arranged for a tow.

The officer collected the marijuana for destruction and documented the incident.

• Officers responded to a local business Dec. 29 in the 400 block of Apollo Drive where a terminated employee was causing a scene and the employer wanted him removed.

The male was trespassed and left the area.

• Officers responded to a snowmobile complaint in the 400 block of Arrowhead Drive Dec. 29. The snowmobile operators were advised of city ordinances.

• Officers responded with the fi re department to a home under construction in the 2100 block of Itasca Circle that caught fi re when a worker accidentally drilled into a wire Dec. 29.

The fi re department extinguished the fi re.

• An officer responded to assist another agency with a traffic stop on Main Street and 21st Avenue North Dec. 29. The officer assisted in detaining the driver and searching the vehicle.

• An officer responded to a 911 open line in the 6700 block of East Shadow Lake Drive which turned into a 911 hang-up with no answer after they called back Dec. 29.

The officer arrived and spoke with the owner of the phone and found they had been having phone problems, and the call was accidental.

• Officers responded to an alarm at a business in the 400 block of Lilac Street Dec. 29.

Officers found there were no problems after checking the building.

A written notice was left.

• While on patrol, officers observed a suspicious occupied vehicle on the side of the road in the 2300 block of Cedar Street Dec. 29. Officers spoke with and identified the occupants. No apparent crime had been committed, and the occupant left.

• An officer responded to a call of a person locked inside a business in the 500 block of Lilac Street Dec. 30. An alternate exit was located and the individual was able to leave the building.

• An officer responded to a 911 open line in the 8200 block of Lake Drive Dec. 30. The officer made contact at a residence and found that one of the occupants had accidentally dialed 911. There were no problems.

• An officer issued a deer permit for a dead deer in the 1100 block of Ash Street Dec. 30.

• An officer responded to a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 600 block of Apollo Drive Dec. 30. The crash was documented, and neither driver appeared to be injured.

The vehicles were driven from the scene.

• A community service officer responded to a complaint of a coyote in a resident’s yard in the 6300 block of Painted Turtle Road Dec. 30. The resident was given resources on how to keep coyotes out of yards.

• An officer responded to a traffic complaint in the 700 block of Apollo Drive. The officer made involved parties aware of the complaint and documented the incident.

• An officer responded to a theft of gas at a local business in the 7000 block of 21st Avenue South Dec. 30. The officer documented the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.

• An officer took a theft report by phone in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Dec. 31. The officer documented the incident and is investigating the situation.

• An officer responded to a fi reworks complaint in the 6600 block of Lacasse Drive Dec. 31. The responsible individuals were located, advised of the multiple complaints and told to stop the fi reworks.

• Officers stopped a vehicle for numerous traffic offenses in the 6200 block of Centerville Road Jan. 1. The driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested and booked at jail for DWI. • An officer responded to a lift assist request in the 7100 block of Ivy Ridge Lane Jan. 1. The officer assisted the male to his feet and confi rmed he was not injured.

• Officers observed a traffic violation near the intersection of County J and Indian Hills Drive in Circle Pines. Verbal warnings were issued.

• Officers investigated a report alleging fraud in the 200 block of Heritage Lane in Circle Pines Dec. 30.

The victim did not want a police report fi led at this time.

• Police were informed of a delayed theft report in the 10 block of East Road in Circle Pines Dec. 30. There are no suspects at this time, and the case is not active.

• Officers were dispatched to the 10 block of Golden Oak Drive in Circle Pines on report of a suspicious vehicle Dec. 30. No issues were found.

• Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Boston Lane in Lexington on a 911 hang-up Dec. 30.

Officers checked the area and did not locate any issues.

Verbal warnings were issued.

• Officers were dispatched to the 6800 block of Mallard Way on an animal complaint in the 1700 block of Dupre Road in Centerville Jan. 1.

a little more than 1,000 kids per year. Numbers are down due to the pandemic, but most of the organization’s outdoor programming like gardening and construction has powered through COVID’s obstacles.

The new space will help bring in more kids, now that there is enough space to safely gather.

“For a while, we couldn’t bring in volunteers, so we decided to bring the projects to the kids. Sure, the program has changed quite a bit, but now we can see more people again, and this space lets us bring in more people,” explained Kordell.
