County presents proposed Birch Street improvements BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Needed improvements to Birch Street have long been a topic of discussion in the city as far back as 2010. The City Council got its fi rst look at preliminary plans for the corridor at its Jan. 7 work session. Anoka County design engineer and right of way specialist Jason Orcutt explained that many of the details have yet to be worked out, but the fi rst phase of the project is proposed
for summer 2019. The second phase will likely follow in summer 2021. “We are in the very beginning stages here,” he said. In 2011, the county completed a corridor study for Birch Street to develop an understanding of the issues, constraints and opportunities along the corridor. The study delved into various technical analyses including safety, access inventory and future traffic operations to identify critical issues and needs. The study

LINO LAKES — City staff and the City Council dreamed up some possibilities for the city’s longawaited recreation complex with the help of WSB & Associates at its fi rst work session in 2019. The city purchased the 67-acre site located near Centerville Road and Birch Street back in 1999 for $1.1 million; the vision was that one day it would become the city’s very own recreational haven. A Master Plan for the site was created back in 2002, but development has been on hold pending funding. The city last discussed the recreation complex at a work session in July, and recently the council agreed to dedicate $375,000 from the general fund toward the fi rst phase of the project. Jason Amberg, of WSB & Associates, presented the updated Master Plan for the site at the Jan. 7 work session. It includes two phases: phase 1A, the area immediately south of the fi re station, and phase 1B, a ballfield area on the southernmost portion of the site. Phase 1A is proposed to include SEE RECREATION COMPLEX, PAGE 19
