Final stroke for Chomonix Golf Course? BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

The City of Lino Lakes has until Feb. 1 to come up with a proposal to save Chomonix Golf Course. The Anoka County Parks Committee recently discussed the possibility of turning the golf course into a multiuse outdoor recreation area within the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Park

Reserve. Lino Lakes Mayor Jeff Reinert, City Councilman Rob Rafferty and City Administrator Jeff Karlson all attended the Jan. 15 meeting in an effort to get more information and see if there is anything the city can do to protect the course. Reinert said the city was fi rst made aware of the topic on Monday, the day before the Parks Committee met. “To me, it feels like they don't

know what they are going to do with it. They are stuck with no one to run it and somebody at the table probably said, ‘It is losing money anyway, let's shut it down,’” Reinert said. “But after 50 years of development and millions and millions and millions of dollars spent on it, to just make a knee-jerk decision like that to close it down …”

Disabled artist paints her passion BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

CIRCLE PINES — Sara Jane Parsons has always loved creating things. After a horrible car accident that left her unable to use her arms and legs, she had to fi nd a new way to create. Parsons, 55, grew up in Circle Pines and graduated from Centennial in 1981.

“I have always been somebody who likes to create things,” she said. “Even though I was not drawing or painting, I was always sewing and had learned how to knit. As a child of the ’70s, I was pretty darn good at tie-dying. I was always begging my mom to let me do arts and crafts classes.” After high school, Parsons headed to the University of Minnesota to pursue studies

in International Relations and Dutch. Her education was put on hold after she was involved in a car accident the summer of 1984 before her junior year. Parsons and her boyfriend, along with her sister and sister's boyfriend, left in the wee hours of the morning for the Boundary Waters hoping to get their canoes SEE SARA JANE PARSONS, PAGE 9

When students at Centennial Middle School (CMS) found out there was a way they could help one of their own, they jumped right in. The student council organized the Pennies for Patients Challenge, which raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), which supports research, finding cures and ensuring access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Although CMS students had not participated in the challenge for at least 10 years, many of the students participated in the challenge while they were in elementary school and wanted to do so again. “We, as a student council, wanted to have our students think outside themselves and help others,” said Student Council Co-Advisor Tobie Sanvik. “One of our student council members suggested we do the Pennies for Patients Challenge ... This year, with having a student in our building going through leukemia, there is a personal connection to the fundraiser for many of our students.” Sixth-grader Alexander Knutson was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when he was in third grade. ALL is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects white blood cells and is the most common form of childhood leukemia. Although his cancer
