Anoka County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Detective Bill Jacobson was one of 25 deputies from (ACSO) who traveled to Washington, D.C. to assist with the inauguration.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) and the Blaine Police Department (BPD) were just some of the 2,500 to 3,000 officers from around the country who traveled to Washington, D.C. to assist with the inauguration.

Bill Jacobson is a detective with the ACSO assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division.

Before starting his job with the sheriff’s office in

2019, he served on the Centennial Lakes Police Department for 14 years.

“Being a part of the detail that helped protect Washington, D.C., was an absolute honor. I am so grateful that ACSO trusted me with such an important mission. It’s an opportunity I never thought I’d have in law enforcement,” Jacobson said.

The selection process for the security detail began more than a year ago. ACSO sent 25 deputies, and BPD sent 14 officers. BPD Captain Mark Boerboom,

Rice Creek Watershed District (RCWD) Board Manager John Waller will continue to serve the remaining 12 months of his term despite RCWD’s request that the Washington County Board of Commissioners remove him from his appointed seat.

Mike Bradley, vice president of the RCWD Board of Managers, appeared before commissioners last month to present a resolution asking that they remove Waller, who serves as the county’s sole representative on the five-member watershed board. The watershed board also has two representatives from Anoka County and two from Ramsey County.

The county board formally considered the resolution at its meeting last week.

The resolution ultimately requests the county, as the appointing authority, convene a hearing pursuant to Minnesota Rules 8410.0040, subpart 1, for the purpose of removing Manager Waller before his term expires for “violation of the code of ethics of the district bylaws or for malfeasance, nonfeasance, or misfeasance.”

Commissioners ultimately declined to schedule a hearing on the matter.

Several representatives from the city of Columbus spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Wheels Up still rolling along 6 years later Six years ago, Lino Lakes resident Karen Calrin set a goal to collect 5,000 manual wheelchairs from all over Minnesota by 2020. Even though she didn’t quite make that goal, she and all her helpers have not given up.

It's all a part of Wheels Up, which collects used wheelchairs to be restored by prisoners and sent to countries who have fewer resources.

“Once we get 250 to 300 chairs, we can get a volunteer semi to come. We have a volunteer day where we all load the chairs into the semi,” Carlin explained.

“Now it’s rolling, and that snowball is growing.”

Carlin is a retired Delta employee. Back in 2015, which marked the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Delta headquarters requested its employees do something in their own communities to recognize and

honor people with disabilities.

Carlin was inspired by Joni and Friends Wheels for the World, an organization that provides “the gift of mobility and hope of the gospel to those affected by disability worldwide.”

Since its inception nearly 30 years ago, Wheels of the World has collected, refurbished and distributed 232,378 chairs. Carlin wanted to start a local effort for the organization (Wheels Up) and came up with the Minnesota SEE WHEELS UP, PAGE 6

Water fees plunge to keep businesses from going off the deep end

CENTERVILLE — The City Council recently voted 4-1 (Council Member Steve King opposed) to authorize a 50% discount on the fees charged to businesses that choose to connect to city water in 2021.

The offer will expire Dec. 31, 2021. “Due to COVID-19 shutdowns, the city is looking for all sorts of ways to help its businesses,� City Administrator/Engineer Mark Statz said at the Jan. 13 council meeting Statz said the city was approached by a couple of

business owners who said they wanted to connect their business to city water but found the cost of connection prohibitive. Businesses pay up to six times the fees to hook up to city water than residential properties pay, he noted.

Homeowners pay a water access charge (WAC) of $1,850 and a lateral benefit fee of $8,000 per parcel.

These figures amount to one residential equivalency unit (REU). Because they use so much more water, businesses are charged multiple REUs, depending on how much water they are expected to use.

A business that uses a lot of water, such as a car wash

or large restaurant, can be charged up to six REUs. That business would then be charged $11,100 for the WAC portion, plus $8,000 for the lateral benefit fee on that parcel of land.

A charge of $19,100 to connect to city water, especially during difficult economic times when business income is reduced, would discourage most businesses.

With the discount, a business with six REUs that would have paid $19,100 will now pay $9,550. Instead of paying $11,000 in WAC fees, a business with six REUs would pay half as much: $5,500.

The $8,000 lateral benefit fee would be halved to $4,000.

Both the city and participating businesses would benefit from the discount, Statz said.

Businesses could take advantage of the discount program and access the city water supply despite the problematic economy.

At the same time, the city could continue to work toward having all businesses and residents ultimately connected to city water and sewer systems, while encouraging ongoing investment in its existing businesses.

“I'm for anything we can do to help businesses out,� Council Member Russ Koski said.

Council Member Steve King disagreed, saying the city is giving away taxpayer money. “The businesses can thank the taxpayer,� he said.

Statz said, “The discount could be considered an incentive program.� He noted that the city’s water fund is healthy and can absorb the impact of discounted rates. “The city has received CARE money to offset costs and to help out our bottom line,� Council Member Michelle Lakso reminded council members.

POLICE REPORTS The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer conducted a traffic stop in the 1000 block of Main Street for a trailer with no license plates in Jan. 12. The trailer may be stolen; the investigation is ongoing. • Officers responded to what was thought to be a motorist assist in the area of Main Street and Lake Drive Jan. 13. It turned out a person was experiencing suicidal ideations. The person was transported to the hospital. • Officers are investigating damage related to a theft of a peace pole from a place of worship in the 100 block of Elm Street Jan. 14. • Police responded to a theft at a business in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Jan. 14. The case is under investigation. • Officers were dispatched to check for a stolen commercial utility vehicle that was being tracked by GPS in the 700 block of Apollo Drive Jan. 15.

The vehicle was located a short time later in a neighboring jurisdiction and was returned to the owner. An adult male was taken into custody for vehicle theft.

• A theft was reported in the 6800 block of 21st Avenue South Jan. 15.

The investigation is ongoing. • An officer responded to a damage to property report in the 300 block of Ravens Court Jan. 15. On arrival, the officer determined a vehicle had been damaged. The incident was documented and is under investigation. • An officer observed a male sleeping in a vehicle on the roadway in the 6300 block of Otter Lake Road Jan. 16. After an investigation, the male driver was cited for drug paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana. • Officers were dispatched to a report of two individuals stuck in an elevator at a hotel in the 500 block of Apollo Drive Jan. 17. Officers were able to open the elevator and the individuals were assisted out. • Officers responded to a call of suspicious activity in the 6300 block of Cripple Creek Court Jan. 18. Officers located some juveniles playing pranks. The juveniles were transported home.

The Centennial Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer observed a vehicle go through a stop sign at the intersection of Main Street and Centerville Road in Centerville Jan. 13 at an excessive speed. The caller advised an unknown suspect stole two cartons of cigarettes from behind the counter and fled in a stolen vehicle. WATERSHED MANAGER: County Board denies watershed district request “I was sickened by how Manager Waller inserted himself into our local election. He used his RCWD position as a political platform to lend credibility to his false allegations,” City Council Member Janet Hegland said.

“He interfered with our city’s elections by spreading misinformation about two candidates running for City Council, just 11 days before our election day, when options for countering his falsehoods were limited. Violence at the Capitol AN. 6 WAS a terrible day when domestic violence broke in our nation’s capital. There were five deaths, property damage, security breaches, and our democracy was threatened.

The insurrection appears organized by people not only angry over the election process and results, but with the misguided belief their violence could change the election results. They stormed the Capitol, which was sparsely guarded and had inadequate security.

Arrests have begun and About the continuing investigations are helping identify groups and Town organizations behind the riot.

The insurrection, the postGene Johnson election false claims of a “stolen election,” as well as this summer’s social unrest, once again demonstrates social media often is not a very reliable source of information.

Social media is different from mainstream media like TV news, national newspapers and community papers like the Press, which operate under libel laws.

However, social media companies like Facebook, Google and Twitter, etc. are not liable for their content. This includes the tweets and posts by users on their platforms. U.S. Code Title 47, Section 230, passed in the 1990s, gave internet platforms this protection so these companies have their own rules and regulations.

The intent of Section 230 is “to preserve the vibrant and competitive free market that presently exists for the internet and other interactive computer services, unfettered by Federal and State regulation” and “to ensure vigorous enforcement of Federal criminal laws to deter and punish trafficking in obscenity, stalking, and harassment by means of computer.” It also provides protection in that, “No provider or user of any interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” Under civil liability it provides that, “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be held liable on account of any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected.”

Congress may need to update Section 230 in light of the increasing amount of messages promoting hatred and violence. Further, faced with the rampant amount of intentional misinformation and spread of irrational conspiracy theories, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, have a critical decision to make. Are they merely platforms that allow people to say anything they wish; no matter how outrageous, hateful, or violent? Or, do they want news and reliable information to be part of their business model.

They can’t be both.

We need to pray to God to assist in healing our country from the violence and selfish motivation of the recent past and act civil to each other.

Congress needs to remember they represent and serve the American people. The people chose not to re-elect Trump and chose Biden.

We now have a new President, Joe Biden, and Vice President, Kamala Harris. They need our prayers and support to bring this nation out of political turmoil and hate. Challenges ahead include: COVID-19 vaccinations, immigration, getting children back into the classrooms, getting people back to active employment, and racial justice.

Dig into trends for 2021

ith 2020 thankfully behind us, the newest gardening trends for 2021 are something both novice and experienced gardeners can look forward to. Here is a sneak peek to stir your interest and get your fingers itching to explore more.

The biggest trend predicted for avid gardeners in the coming year is an uptick in the use of technology.

From automatic mowers and watering systems to enhanced and decorative lighting, there is an endless supply of contemporary Movers & tech solutions for gardening Shakers needs. On a trip to a local garden Kari Martin or hardware store, you might find robotic lawn mowers similar to our household robotic vacuum cleaners. There are WiFi enabled sprinklers and solarpowered gadgets to keep gardens watered and weeded throughout the hot summer. If you have pesky critters to deal with, motionactivated sprinklers can help keep them out of your garden. Do you

want to learn more about a plant or shrub? There are several free smart phone apps available for plant identification.

A second trend taking off for 2021, and on the opposite end of the technology spectrum, is becoming more DIY. From low-maintenance garden designs to upcycling and repurposing, the trend is to make do with what you have and reap the rewards. There are hundreds of great ideas for reinventing old planters and using household items in the garden. Vertical gardening is finding new life with wood pallets, which can be used on decks and in gardens for easier access when growing fresh herbs. Tires are being recycled for seasonal wreaths, and when cleverly transformed with paint and twine they can also be used for low seating. Wind chimes and simple light features can be made from items such as mason jars and spoons. During our surprise early snowfall, I had a blast creating insect houses that will encourage predator bugs to move in and feast on my garden’s insect pests. You can even invite friends and family to get involved with a virtual doit-yourself party; may the most creative idea win!

The final trend for 2021 is about cooking from farm to table. With so many of us currently working from home, we have been stepping up our baking and cooking routines. We have also had more time to plant gardens and enjoy the harvest. A home garden gives you an opportunity to create your own unique recipes with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and beautiful produce. If you are searching for inspiration, look no further than your favorite social media site to find some great ideas. The foodie experience is more than just great food; it’s about taking time to slow down and savor the food and the moment. Imagine making an ice sculpture with cut flowers or a candle infused with your favorite blossoms to enhance your dining experience.

With creativity, curiosity and know-how, the sky is the limit, and these trends will make 2021 an exciting time to dig into more gardening.

IRS WARNS ABOUT NEW WAVE OF SCAMS The Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division (IRS-CI) is warning Minnesota taxpayers about a new wave of COVID-19-related scams as the agency delivers the second round of economic impact payments (EIP). In the last several months, IRS-CI has seen a variety of EIP scams and other fi nancial schemes designed to steal money and personal information from taxpayers.

Gordon “Buzz” Huse

Age 80, a 38-year resident of Buena Park, California, originally from Lexington, Minnesota, passed away on Jan. 13, 2021. A humble and unassuming man with a larger-than-life personality, uncanny wit, extraordinary sense of humor, and superhuman mental and physical strengths, he defeated cancer over 15 years ago and battled Parkinson’s disease courageously for years as it slowly sapped his physical strength and mental sharpness, but never his determination or love for life and family.

After losing his father tragically as a teenager, he stepped up to keep the family businesses thriving. This education in business and life defi ned him and taught him that he could achieve great success while inspiring others and having fun along the way. Forgoing a formal college education, he married at 18 his wife of 62 years, Janet, and followed his love for business and motorsports to an accomplished career, retiring as a Senior Vice President of Yamaha Motor Corporation USA in 2004.

Putting others before self, always, he found joy in providing for his family, fi xing anything in MacGyver-like fashion, caring for countless pets, and supporting the interests of his wife, kids, and grandkids. A car enthusiast, he bought and fi xed far more cars for others than for himself, though he loved to share stories and pictures of cars he owned as a kid, including his custom painted 1957 Corvette “Fuelie”.

His confident, selfless leadership of the family set the gold standard for a strong father and mentor.

His spirit will live on daily in the way his children hope to raise their own families.

He is preceded in death by parents, Gordon S. Huse and Mildred L. Huse and sister, Diane Huse. Survived by wife, Janet L. Huse (Dahler), six children: Kim Meline (Joel), Gordon S. Huse II, Cathy Huse, William D. Huse (Lola), Daniel Huse (Mary) and Jonathan Huse (Shayna), and six grandchildren: Katie Meline, William G. Huse, Calvin Huse, Hana Huse, Lexi Huse, and Hudson Huse.

Private services will be held in California, followed by a private funeral at WashburnMcReavy Hillside Chapel and burial at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Taxpayers who receive unsolicited emails or social media attempts to gather information that appear to be from either the IRS or an organization closely linked to the IRS, should forward the message to phishing@irs.gov.

Taxpayers are encouraged not to engage potential scammers online or on the phone.

Some common COVID-19 scams include: • Text messages asking taxpayers to disclose bank account information under the guise of receiving the $1,200 EIP. • Phishing schemes using email, letters and social media messages with key words such as “coronavirus,” “COVID-19” and “stimulus” in varying ways. These communications are blasted to large numbers of people and aim to access personal information and fi nancial account information (including account numbers and passwords).

• The organized and unofficial sale of fake at-home COVID-19 test kits (as well as offers to sell fake cures, vaccines, pills

I want to voice my opinion on all of the apartments going in. The City Council doesn’t care about Lexington residents. We voice our opinions on the apartments, but those opinions mean nothing to them. It’s easy for them to vote on these apartments since they don’t live next to them.

The fact is that parking will be an issue. Most families have two cars.

There are not enough spots at the Landings of Lexington and there won’t be enough at Ephesians, either.

It’s common sense that low-income apartments mean that homeowners will lose tens of thousands in property value, that’s a fact.

The building owners only care about their rent checks, they don’t care who they piss off. I also love how the city doesn’t fi ne them for parking on the streets. To the city of Lexington, I’m not proud to live here. Thanks for only caring about money and not the people of Lexington.

WHEELS UP: Wheelchair collection effort still going strong FROM PAGE 1

5,000 campaign, which aimed to collect 5,000 chairs by the year 2020.

Carlin’s neighbors Jodi Krinkie (retired Delta employee) and Gail Wells (who now lives in Forest Lake) were happy to join the cause.

When the group first started collecting chairs, Carlin said they were lucky if they were able to fill one semitrailer full of wheelchairs in a year. In 2020, the group collected two semitrailers full of wheelchairs.

They are well on their way to filling a third.

Since 2016, Wheels Up and Joni and Friends Minnesota have collected over 2,500 manual wheelchairs.

The organization also accepts parts of chairs, such as cushions and footrests as well as other items such as canes, walkers and crutches.

The chairs get distributed to 15 federal, state and private correctional facilities in 10 states, and inmates are trained to restore the wheelchairs to like-new condition. Once the wheelchairs are ready, they get sent off to the places that need them most. Some locations have included Mexico, Cuba, Uganda, China, Guatemala, El Salvador, Poland, Philippines, Dominican Republic and more.

“In a some of these countries, some of these people have never walked. They have never been mobile they sit on edge of town and they are not part of community. This doesn’t give them their life back, it gives them their life to begin with,” said airport employee and volunteer Gail West.

West is heading up the effort to decorate the semitrailer that the wheelchairs are stored in at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport.

“We started thinking about how we could incorporate the community with this. We want to have different areas of the community have their voice come through the art,” she said. West is drawing up some designs, and community members will be invited to fill in different colors of the mural.

As is usually the case with any volunteer effort, the group could always use more help. Carlin said, “We want to invite and challenge anyone in the community who is feeling locked in, like this pandemic has shut them down, to jump in. We want all the help we get.” West added, “If people just have a small amount of time … this is not a huge commitment. There are so many possibilities here.”

Goal set high for business donation effort

A Hugo resident is doing all he can to ensure that small businesses in the community stick around once this pandemic is behind us.

Mike Roberts, who is originally from North Carolina, is no stranger to small business. At the young age of 5, he remembers helping out with his parents’ small business.

When Roberts was a senior in high school, his parents’ business of 30 years went under and they had to file for bankruptcy.

“My parents lost everything …

They ended up having to work at a competitor in Atlanta, which was like four to five hours away (from home) during the week. So, my senior year of high school I was living alone for most part,” he recalled. “I’m very infinitely and acutely aware of the sacrifices that go into running a small business.”

Compelled to help area small businesses, Roberts started reaching out to community leaders, business owners and community members. “I was very, very surprised to hear that there was no centralized effort to help

(businesses),” Roberts said.

Flying by the seat of his pants, Roberts sprang into action and set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations for local businesses in need.

“I’m trying to hold people accountable and give people a venue to get involved,” Roberts explained.

Roberts said residents are quick to offer their opinions on what the town needs and doesn’t need on social media, but are not always willing to “put their money where their mouth is.”

“Are you actually going to step up and either help somebody start a business or start a business yourself?

Because if you are not, you kind of don’t have any legs to stand on. You can’t complain and whine about something if you are not going to do anything to help.”

Roberts says 100% of the proceeds will be given to local businesses that need support, but many of the details still need to be worked out. Roberts said small businesses in surrounding communities may also be recipients for the funds.

“The money is going to go to somebody. That’s the whole reason I started it. I want it to go somewhere so

As of press time, the page had raised a total of $1,350 on a goal of $250,000.

One of the very first donors was Victor Shevchuk, owner of MGM Wine & Spirits in Hugo, who donated $1,000.

“As a Hugo resident and business owner, I understand how hard it is for small businesses to deal with COVID closures and I felt obligated to give back to the community,” Shevchuk said. “MGM and all the other liquor stores in Minnesota, were lucky and

worked without interruptions in 2020.

We actually picked up some business as restaurants were closed, so I felt it was my obligation to give back when I saw Mike doing this awesome initiative.”

Hugo Business Association (HBA) President Monica Fry said the HBA is grateful for Roberts’ efforts to help businesses. "I feel that Mike is doing an outstanding job on getting the word out that we need to help our local businesses. Any help to help his cause will be a win-win for everyone.

“We are so grateful for all of our local businesses and hate to see them struggle."

CENTERVILLE TIDBITS The Centerville City Council took the following action at its Jan. 13 meeting: • Administered the ceremonial oath of office to Mayor D. Love and Council Members Steve King, Russ Koski and Darrin Mosher. All four stopped by City Hall earlier to be officially sworn in. King and Koski will serve until Jan. 6, 2025; Mosher will serve until Jan. 2, 2023 and Love will serve until Jan. 6, 2025.

• Adopted the 2021 list of council member liaison appointments. Koski was appointed acting mayor, and Michelle Lakso was appointed alternate. Council Liaisons were also given check signing authority and appointed to the Anoka County Fire Protection Council; the Centennial Fire District Steering Committee; the Centennial Lakes Police Department Governing Board; the North Metro Telecommunications Commission; Economic Development Authority; Parks and Recreation Committee; Planning and Zoning Commission and Personnel Committee.

• Appointed Love as weed inspector, as required by law, and appointed Public Works Director Paul Palzer as deputy weed inspector.

• Approved the list of contractors who serve the city, with few major changes. A notable change includes a new assessor to be determined after the retirement of long-time assessor, Ken Tolzmann in February. The

The city's financial adviser, Northland Securities, informed staff of a possible $86,000 to $88,000 in interest savings by refunding its 2013A Bonds. Financial Adviser George Eilertson forecast a steady decline in bond payments through 2028, saving the city approximately $12,000 a year during that period.

• Set the second annual council half-day retreat for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sat., Feb. 6 at Hugo City Hall to discuss goal setting and other matters pertaining to the running of the city during the upcoming year.

Each year, council holds a meeting in retreat format, which it is allowed to do, according to state law.

• Council will meet in person with safety protocols in place.

Minnesotans 65 and older can start scheduling appointments for vaccines

Some Minnesotans eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine will be able to sign up for appointments at one of the state’s nine community vaccination pilot clinics through a new website and call center launched last week by the state. The clinics will initially serve adults age 65 and older, as well as prekindergarten through grade 12 educators, staff and child care workers.

Because this is a limited pilot program, vaccine demand is certain to outpace available doses at this time, and there will be a limited number of appointments available. Minnesotans are encouraged to remain patient as the state waits for more vaccine doses from the federal government. These initial clinics will set the state on a path for a more extensive network of vaccination clinics in Minnesota communities as the federal government increases vaccine supply.

“Every shot in the arm is another step toward ending this pandemic, and these clinics will help us meet the goal of getting millions of Minnesotans vaccinated as quickly and as safely as possible,” Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm said. “To be clear, we do not have enough vaccine for everyone who wants one. Appointment slots will fill very quickly, and most Minnesotans will need to be patient as we wait for more vaccine to arrive in the state. But we are working hard to build a community vaccination system so we are ready along with pharmacies and clinics and others to get Minnesotans immunized once the federal government provides those doses.”

In addition to the pilot clinics, Minnesota health care systems are providing limited vaccine doses to patients 65 years of age and older. Providers will contact patients with this information — Minnesotans should not contact their health care providers directly right now.

Minnesotans age 65 and older can make appointments by visiting mn.gov/ vaccine or by calling 612-426-7230 or toll free 1-833-431-2053. Minnesotans should attempt to make an appointment online before dialing the call center. Minnesotans who cannot immediately make an appointment may be able to sign up to be placed on a waitlist.

Available appointments will refresh every Tuesday at noon. Educators and child care providers, with few exceptions, will work directly with their employer to receive instructions on how to secure a vaccination appointment and should not try to schedule an appointment unless their employer has contacted them with information about their appointment.

Appointments are required to receive a shot. Minnesotans without an appointment should not visit a community vaccination pilot site. No walk-ins will be accepted, and anyone with the intention of walking in for an appointment will be asked to leave and given information on how to sign up for an appointment. Those on the waitlist will be notified if they should visit a vaccination pilot site for their shot.

Minnesotans who are waitlisted but do not receive their vaccine one week will need to sign up again the following week.

• Approved the quote from T. A. Schifsky and Sons, Inc. in the amount of $23,204.09 to install a parking lot and trail improvements at Acorn Creek Park. Funds would come from Park Dedication Funds. A year ago, staff solicited a quote from the contractor on site doing work for Old Mill Estates Phase II and solicited a second quote after the first quote seemed too high. The Centennial beat Andover 73-37 there. Cummings notched 17 points and five steals, Anderson 15 points, Guyer 15 rebounds and 11 points, and Haley Mulberry eight points.

CENTENNIAL HOCKEY Connor Thompson is a second-year captain on the Centennial hockey team that’s 4-0 with a 28-7 goal advantage. The 5-foot10, 175-pound senior forward is second in scoring with two goals and five assists for seven points. As a junior, he had nine goals and 13 assists. “He is a terrific kid and an unbelievable leader,” coach Ritch Menne assessed. “Connor has worked really hard this off-season to make sure he and the team have a great season. You can really tell when Connor hits the ice he is a player that will be focused on by other teams.”

Harper Searles delivered the game-winner in overtime as the Centennial Cougars beat Champlin Park 4-3 in their first close game of the season at home Saturday night.

The Cougars (4-0) outscored their first three foes 24-4, including Spring Lake Park 8-1 on Thursday evening, also at home.

Searles notched his third goal of the season, assisted by Henry Bartle, at 3:05 of the extra session. The Cougars trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but pulled even each time on goals by Owen Van Tassel, Bartle (power play) and Dominic Hauer as they outshot the Rebels 41-26.

Leo Troje made 23 saves. Scoring for Champlin (0-3) were Ethan Mus, Tanner Thompson (power play) and Jack Bergstrom.

Against Spring Lake Park (0-3), Jordan Newpower pumped in three goals.

The Centennial Cougars achieved both objectives against an aggressive Blaine squad Friday night, winning the game 59-48 while Jodi Anderson notched her 1,000th point.

Anderson needed 14 to reach the milestone. She had just four with six minutes left as Blaine defenders clamped down on her effectively. However, the 5-foot-11 senior guard struck for a 3-point play on a drive and a 3-point shot in quick succession, added a free shot, and, with 33 seconds left, drilled a 3-point shot from the top of the key for the final points of the game, putting her at 1,000th.

“Blaine was playing real well defensively, putting pressure on everybody, not just me, but toward the end I was getting more open looks,” Anderson said.

After getting hugs from teammates she ran to the stands to embrace her parents, with her father lifting her off her feet with a bear hug.

“They didn’t really say anything; they were just proud of me and excited with me,” she said.

Anderson, who has signed with North Dakota, averaged 11 points as a sophomore and 15.8 as a junior. She’s averaging 17 this year.

The Centennial swimmers (11) lost to the Spring Lake Park Panthers 101-94 on Tuesday evening.

Event winners for the Cougars were Hunter Belting (50 free, 22.66, and butterfly, 57.19) and Riley McNamara (diving, 200.55). Placing second were Aidan Gulaid (100 and 200 freestyles), Liam Gulaid (individual medley) and George Atkinson (backstroke).

Get lost in Stillwater’s massive ice maze

For the rest of the winter, Stillwater will be home to what is said to be the largest ice maze in the country.

That may not be an official title, but the organizers of the new Ice Palace Maze are laying claim to it anyway. As far as they know, no one else can rightfully take it away.

The 114-foot by 72-foot ice maze was built using 1,500 blocks of ice (each weighing approximately 260 pounds) in the parking lot of the Zephyr Theatre, located in downtown Stillwater. Together, the various twists and turns of the massive ice maze make up a half-mile of passages.

As visitors wind their way through the maze, they will find plenty of good photo opportunities thanks to the ice sculptures, thrones and colorful lights tower inside. Once they reach the end, the only way out will prove to be down—the exit involves a trip down one of two 36-foot ice slides.

“Visiting our Ice Palace Maze will be a fun, safe, family-focused way to celebrate winter,” Zephyr Theatre Executive Director Calyssa Hall said. “We hope it will bring a lot of joy to Stillwater residents and visitors.”

Last year, when COVID-19 restrictions limited inside access to the Zephyr Theatre, Hall turned the south parking lot into an outdoor entertainment area, where concerts and Shakespeare plays took place during the warmer months. With the threat of COVID-19 still lingering and some restrictions still in place, Hall said, “the Ice Palace Maze allows us to create something artistic outdoors.”

downtown, appropriately titled “Wintertime in Stillwater.” A lights display (including the lighting of Stillwater's historic Lift Bridge), a color-changing LED display set to music on the Chestnut Street Plaza and horse-drawn carriage rides are among the other coldweather attractions.

The Ice Palace Maze will be open 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays into March (weather permitting). Capacity is limited to 100 people at a time for safety reasons. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 5-12. Children 4 and younger get in free.

DNR unveils new pollinator license plate to help preserve critical habitat Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Sarah Strommen unveiled the design of Minnesota’s newest critical habitat license plate Jan. 14, which features native pollinators including a bee and butterflies. The new license plate is available now online at https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/Pages/vehicleregistration.aspx and at deputy registrar and driver’s license offices statewide.

“Many Minnesotans share a commitment to maintaining healthy populations of bees, butterflies and other native pollinators,” Strommen said. “This beautiful new critical habitat license plate is an opportunity to show your support for pollinators while providing important funding to preserve habitats.”

There is no need to wait for current license plate tabs to expire, as the license fee is prorated when a critical habitat license plate is purchased. The $30 annual contribution to the Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM) Critical Habitat Program helps to preserve important wildlife habitat and plant communities such as wetlands, prairies, old growth forests and endangered orchid sites. Contributions over $30 go toward buying and managing important natural habitats, which are preserved as public lands.

These lands are open to compatible public use, like hunting, hiking and wildlife watching.

The winning license plate design by artist Timothy Turenne depicts the monarch butterfly, Minnesota’s state butterfly and rusty patched bumble bee, recently designated as the state bee.

In addition to purchasing the new license plate, Minnesotans can take other steps to help pollinators: • Grow milkweed, the monarch host plant, and other native flowers to provide nectar resources.

• Provide open ground and unmown roadsides as appropriate.

• Reduce pesticide use.

The DNR supports native pollinators by restoring and managing the ecosystems and plant communities they rely on for food. For example, restoration and management activities on DNRadministered lands provide approximately 1.1 million acres of habitat in the northern conservation core for monarch butterflies. who has been with BPD for 13 years, said this was the first time the department has assisted with the inauguration.

In a typical year, one of the days in the nation’s capital would be reserved for on-site training. This year, because of the pandemic most of the training took place ahead of time online.

“We were subjected to additional screening and had to complete training for carrying a firearm on an airplane, what things to look for in the secure area around the capital that should warrant more attention, proper use of force procedures when the presidential motorcade was in the area, and a number of other training items that were specific to our assignment,” Jacobson explained.

Boerboom added, “We were deputized as Metro D.C. special deputies, so we had to follow their policies, know the procedures for a presidential motorcade, and what to expect if the unexpected happens. There is a lot of information, working here in Blaine, that we don't get exposed to. Obviously, we don't have a presidential motorcade coming through our city on a regular basis, so we had to learn about how they operate and what to do if something if does happen.”

Inauguration day was a long day for the officers.

“Our team was up by 2 a.m. to begin getting our uniforms ready. We reported for duty at 3 a.m. at the hotel and we were bused to our assigned post along Pennsylvania Avenue, which was inside the secure zone,” Jacobson recalled. “Our job was to watch for suspicious people, items, or activity in the secure zone. We were also available to be deployed to any concerns in our immediate area.”

Thankfully, the day was “uneventful,” he said.

“Given the events of Jan. 6, there was significant concern for the potential for more violence. We were prepared to address any issues, but we all hoped the day would end up being exactly what it was: a peaceful transition of power,” Jacobson said.

Boerboom added, “We stood along a perimeter fenceline to protect the roadway from any spectators … Even though there weren't spectators, we knew that each of us were there doing a crucial role making sure that nothing happened that day that would hiccup the inauguration.” He said the highlight was when the presidential motorcade traveled by on its way to the Capitol.

Boerboom was impressed with the organization of the Metro D.C. Police.

“My role at BPD is a lot of event planning.

Our biggest event here is the golf tournament, and that in itself is a lot of work; I can't imagine what goes into this.”

Jacobson said he will never forget the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“The presence of 25 uniformed Anoka County deputies standing on Pennsylvania Avenue, halfway across the country, is a testament to our commitment to serve,” Jacobson said.
