PAUL DOLS | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
The older the better Ken Schindeldecker takes a group of passengers for a spin around a snow-covered field in his 1925 Ford Model T — equipped with a snowmobile conversion — during the Stillwater Snowmobile Club “The Older the Better” vintage snowmobile event Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Blacksmith Lounge north of Hugo. The antique winter conversions were used by mail carriers, doctors and utility companies. Find more photos on page 10.
CIRCLE PINES — Everyone in this newly formed group has something in common — they care about Golden Lake and its future. After around 30 residents attended a water quality meeting hosted by the city in December, a steering committee was formed with the task of creating an organization called the Friends of Golden Lake (FOGL). “We are all about inclusiveness and representing voices not just on the lake, but off the lake and beyond. There are 35,000 people that visit Golden Lake every year and obviously that is a lot more than live on the lake … We are doing this for them, we want them to participate,” said steering committee member Andy Dahl, who lives on the lake. “We might be starting it, but we really want them to get involved. Somebody has to get this started so that 10 years from now, the lake is of the quality that you would expect when you come to the beach, go fishing or use the park,” Dahl said. “This really is the beginning of the conversation and now is a great time to launch this new organization because there seems to be an interest level that hasn’t been there in 10 years.” Dahl was interested in being a part of the organization partly because of his background in science. He has an undergraduate degree in microbiology. “I really am interested in the evolution of SEE GOLDEN LAKE, PAGE 14
Centennial addresses top 3 priorities for legislators BY SARAH KNIEFF CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Increasing the funding formula by 3 percent, equalizing levy dollars and controlling the district’s costs of providing special education services were the top three priorities the Centennial School District presented to a few legislators at the annual legislative breakfast Friday, Jan. 27, in the Centennial High School Learning Commons. Sen. Roger Chamberlain (R-Lino Lakes), Rep. Linda Runbeck (R-Circle Pines) and Rep. Nolan
West (R-Blaine) attended the event. Sen. Jerry Newton (D-Coon Rapids) was unable to attend. Superintendent Brian Dietz explained the event was an opportunity for representatives of the district to ask questions of the legislators and identify areas of concern. “I appreciate the support of our community, I appreciate the support of the legislators, although there is still work to be done. Our topics today aren’t shockers; they are the same every year, but this is us,” Dietz said. A surprise to the morning’s
lineup of speakers was the addition of a student representative. Junior Christopher Meng, a member of the National Honor Society and student council, said, “In the audience today are representatives of the district, parents, members of the community and staff. We appreciate the time our legislators are taking today to spend with us listening to the voices of the district and the community.”
