Lexington mayor running for governor
Sending St. Valentine to seniors
BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR
LEXINGTON — Mayor Mike Murphy has announced that he will run for governor. The next Minnesota gubernatorial election will be Nov. 8, 2022. Murphy was elected to the City Council in 2016. After former Mayor Mark Kurth resigned Mayor Mike Murphy in September 2019, Murphy was appointed by his fellow council members to fill the remainder of Kurth’s term (through December 2020). He then ran unopposed for reelection. His current term runs through Dec. 31, 2024. Last week, Murphy released a nearly 10-minute video announcing his candidacy for governor and launched his campaign website. “The time for action is now. It is time we listen to those who haven't been listened to before, and it is time for fresh leadership. And so today (Feb. 4) with my family, my friends and my community at my side, I'm excited to announce my candidacy for governor of Minnesota,” he said in the video.

Seniors at two local care facilities will not feel alone this Valentine’s Day, thanks to St. Joseph of the Lakes Catholic Church and community members. For the first time, parishioners are busy making Valentine’s Day cards, which will be given to seniors at White Pine Senior Living in Blaine and Lino Lakes Assisted Living. Cards will also be given to parishioners who have been isolated due to personal circumstances amid the pandemic. “People are thirsting for contact and connection and to know that they are not alone,” said Barb Uschold Anderson, director of pastoral care. “Because we have not been able to go out into the care centers (for visits), we are at least able to reach out in this way.” The cards have been made by people of all ages. Uschold Anderson said some community members who do not attend St. Joseph have also made and dropped off cards. Volunteers also made cards for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ham Lake resident Cheri Brausen, a former longtime Lino Lakes resident, has attended the church for over 20 years. Brausen made 25 cards. SHANNON GRANHOLM | PRESS PUBLICATIONS

Area photographer makes subjects feel ‘comfortable in their own skin’ When Grace Magill first got a camera, it was just a way to take photos of her friends dancing. Now, her penchant for photography has transformed into a business. Magill, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), graduated from Centennial in
2019. She was on the Centennial Dance Team for four years, two of those as captain. She was also all-conference; she made seven trips to state and was an honorroll student. She has been taking photos since 2017. “At first I saw this as just a hobby to take dance pictures of my friends. Over time, it developed to senior and family photos,” Magill explained.
In a non-pandemic year, Magill would spend her summers bartending at concerts and events downtown at sports stadiums, but last summer, that wasn’t an option. “I decided to fully open up my hobby to a business. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” she said. Magill has undertaken all types of photography, capturing
