Recreation complex to be placed on ballot? BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Whether the proposed recreation complex at Birch Street and Centerville Road should be placed on the ballot or not was up for discussion at the City Council’s work session on Feb. 4. The city last discussed the recreation complex at a work session in July. Recently, the council agreed to dedicate $ 375,000 from the city’s general fund toward the first phase of the project. Jason Amberg, of WSB & Associates, presented the updated master plan for the site, located behind the city’s Fire Station at the corner of Birch Street and Centerville Road, at the council’s Jan. 7 work session. As presented, the project includes two phases: phase 1A, the area immediately south of the station, and phase 1B, a ballfield area on the southernmost portion of the site. Phase 1A was proposed to include a small parking lot, trails, four pickleball courts, two tennis courts and a picnic shelter. Public Services Director Rick DeGardner explained since the last meeting, the plan was updated to reflect some of the council’s comments including the addition of two pickleball courts as well as a full-size basketball court and sand volleyball courts at the south end of the property. The total estimated cost for Phase 1A base development is $ 592,233, which does not include the park shelter ($45,000) and basketball court ($25,000). Mayor Jeff Reinert said he had been in communication with resident Mary Ann

County swings into action on golf course strategic plan BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR
LINO LAKES — Chomonix Golf Course has avoided “sudden death” in the golf playoffs after all. At its well-attended Feb. 5 meeting at the Bunker Hills Activities Center, the Anoka County Parks Committee approved a proposal to continue operating the golf course for at least three more years. County Commissioners Rhonda Sivarajah, Julie Braastad and Mandy Meisner attended the meeting. “My proposal for Chomonix would be to continue keeping it operating for at least the next three years,” Sivarajah said, addressing committee members. “Part of that process would be bringing in new management with professional golf management experience so we can ensure that

we give Chomonix the best possibility of being successful. “In addition, I would ask that you consider looking at bringing in a professional entity to really review operations ... I would also ask that, as part of this process, on a quarterly basis we receive information as to how we are progressing, what are the things that are being done and actions being taken so that we can continue to monitor and ensure that we are on the right track.” County Commissioner and Parks Committee Chair Mike Gamache explained that closing the course was simply one of the options committee members had discussed. “We were not moving forward with anything at the time,” he noted. “I apologize if it came across that way with some of the things we SEE CHOMONIX , PAGE 3
