LINO LAKES — Rehbein Black Dirt, currently located at 6921 21st Ave. S in Centerville, is planning to move to Lino Lakes.

Gerald Rehbein submitted a land use application for a conditional use permit (CUP) to relocate the earthmoving/black dirt stockpile business.

It’s not a long move: the distance between the two sites is approximately 0.5 mile.

The new site located between 21st Avenue S and I-35E, totals approximately 18.36 acres. The proposed stockpile will be approximately 2.7 acres in area and have a maximum height of 40 feet. It will contain approximately 100,000 cubic yards of earth, according to Jon Rausch, of Cushman & Wakefield, explained that the operation needs to relocate because they have a large e-commerce deal that’s going to happen on the 40-acre site in Centerville. Plans are also in works for the site in Lino Lakes.

Lino Lakes woman spreads kindness via rocks LINO LAKES — Cheryl Heilman was waiting at a bus stop when she looked down and saw a strangely colorful rock. It piqued her interest, so she turned the rock over to discover a label with information to a community she didn’t know existed.

It’s all a part of an effort to make people smile by leaving behind

decorated rocks, often called kindness rocks, in random locations for people to stumble upon.

Since discovering the community three years ago, Heilman estimates she has decorated and hidden approximately 500 rocks. “I didn’t even know that I had artistic talent,” Heilman said, explaining that artistic abilities are not a necessity

for this project, as anyone with any skill level can join in the fun.

Heilman quickly got plugged into a couple of kindness rock groups on Facebook, specifically Rocks Sharing Smiles Across Miles and Anoka Kindness Rock Garden.

The social media communities taught her how to decorate the rocks and, before she knew it, Heilman became a

moderator of one of the groups.

“It’s all about spreading kindness and surprising joy in a world where things aren’t so kind…,” Heilman explained. “It really caught on with me. It is fun, it’s relaxing, and you get focused on what you are doing and forget about the world around you.”

Lions host 39th annual Centerville Ice Fishing Contest

Several fire departments respond to Fleet Farm fire in Blaine BLAINE — At 11:39 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, the Spring Lake Park – Blaine – Mounds View Fire Department (SBM) along with response partners from Centennial Fire District (CFD), Lexington Fire Department and Lino Lakes Public Safety Fire Division, were dispatched to a report of a structure fi re in the yard at Fleet Farm, located at 10250 Lexington Ave. NE in Blaine.

SBM/CFD Chief Charlie Smith says crews observed a very large column of black smoke coming from the area of Fleet Farm. Upon their arrival, crews found a fast-moving fi re in a large amount of palletized fertilizer, patio furniture, deer stands and other plastic/wood combustibles.

Flame heights reached more than 50 feet high.

Due to the size of the fi re, a second alarm assignment was requested, which brought crews from Coon Rapids, Ham Lake and a second crew from CFD. “First alarm crews attacked the large fi re with multiple heavy caliber streams from two sides, cutting the fi re off from further spread through palletized storage as well as bringing the main body fi re under control in approximately 25 minutes,” Smith explained. “Total estimated water flow to bring the fi re under control was 4,000 gallons per minute.”

Because of the amount of work required to overhaul the fi re area in below-zero temperatures and the damaged area with significant collapse potential, a third alarm assignment was requested, which brought crews from Andover, Fridley and Lake Johanna. Crews remained on scene for approximately four hours. Smith said one fi refighter was injured and treated at the scene by Allina EMS. The main Fleet Farm building was protected from the fi re and continues to operate normally.

The cause of the fi re is under investigation; a damage estimate was not available as of press time.

This fi re successfully used the Anoka County Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), which was fully implemented in 2021. The MABAS, which Smith said worked flawlessly, improves the dispatching of critical resources to expanding incidents.

In addition to all of the fi re crews, the Blaine Police Department and Allina EMS also responded to the scene.

“Approximately 50 fi refighters and 12 support personnel operated at this fi re,” Smith said.

• The city of Lino Lakes has reached a settlement agreement with St. Clair Land Company. The city and St. Clair Land Company are parties to a civil action, St. Clair Land Company v. City of Lino Lakes (Anoka County Court File No. 02-CV-20-4137), relating to St. Clair’s breach of contract claims against the city. A court trial was held in October 2021 and the court issued findings of fact, conclusions of law and an order for judgment Feb. 3, 2022.

Both parties wish to resolve all claims by entering into a settlement agreement and release. As a part of the agreement, both parties agree: St. Clair will dismiss its $2,645 claim related to the driveway repair at 6575 Enid Trail; St. Clair will waive its appeal rights to any and all claims asserted in the action; the city will not petition the court for its attorney’s fees and costs as allowed by the development agreement and the court’s Feb. 3 order for judgment; and both parties waive their right to pursue any statutorily available fees or costs.

• Blakely LaCroix has been appointed to the Economic Development Advisory Committee for a three-year term.

• Chanel Littleton has applied for and received an individual massage license to work at Allure Salon, located at 6511 Ware Road (suite 190).

Allure Salon currently holds an enterprise massage license and has other massage therapists on staff. Per city policy, applicants applying for a massage license are required to undergo a background investigation.

• The city will spend no more than $75,000 for renovations to the administrative department within City Hall. The project will include carpet and other office furnishings as a continuation of the renovations the city made to City Hall in 2020 as part of COVID-19 related upgrades.

• The city is in compliance with the Local Government Pay Equity Act. The act (M.S. 471.991-471.999) and Minnesota Rules, Chapter 3920, require local government jurisdictions to submit a pay equity report to the state every three years. The city was required to report in 2022 for wages in place as of Dec. 31, 2021.

• The city has a new community service officer (CSO) and police officer. Amanda Ulvenes’ fi rst day as a CSO will be March 1. Her hourly rate of pay will be $23.02, the starting rate of the AFSCME labor contract. Matthew Reineke will start as the newest police officer Feb. 28. His hourly rate of pay will be $36.66, the starting wage of the union wage schedule.

• The city received three bids for the water tower No. 2 project. Water tower No. 2 is located at 7001 Otter Lake Road and was constructed in 1996.

An inspection identified several structural and coating issues that need to be addressed. In addition, the exterior and interior dry coatings are over 24 years old and have surpassed their life expectancy. The low bid of $1,188,857 was submitted by Classic Protective Coatings Inc. The project will take 14 to 16 weeks, and will be completed by the fall.

• The City Council has given its approval to the planned unit development final plan/final plat

and development agreement for NorthPointe 8th Addition (NorthPointe Garden Estates). Lino Lakes 72 LLC is final platting a 4.5-acre parcel for the purpose of constructing a 72-unit, 55plus age restricted independent senior housing building.

• The two-wing building is proposed for the southeast corner of the NorthPointe development, which is located near 20th Avenue and I-35E, south of West Cedar Street and north of Birch Street. NorthPointe currently has 216 single-family detached homes. The preliminary plat for the multifamily apartment building was approved with the development back in 2014. At the time, the developer proposed 88 units.

• Several streets within the city will see improvements in 2022. The City Council has awarded a construction contract to T.A. Schifsky & Sons Inc. for $1,213,104 for the base bid and two bid alternates ($211,188 and $239,490).

Mill and overlay, spot curb and gutter replacement and storm sewer and water system repairs are planned for: West Shadow Lake Drive from Birch Street to Fox Road; Fox Road from West Shadow Lake Drive to the cul-desac; Fox Circle from Fox Road to the cul-de-sac; White Owl Drive from Fox Road to West Shadow Lake Drive; River Birch Place from West Shadow Lake Drive to the cul-de-sac; Ironwood Circle from West Shadow Lake Drive to the culde-sac; Hickory Place from West Shadow Lake Drive to the cul-de-sac; Painted Turtle Road from West Shadow Lake Drive to Hawthorn Road; and Hawthorn Road from Ware Road to Painted Turtle Road.

The bid alternates are for bituminous overlays on Rondeau Lake Road W and 81st Street W and Rondeau Lake Road E. WSB will provide construction services for the project for $62,000.

The project is scheduled for completion by Oct. 31.

• The city will soon accept bids for the 2022 East Shadow Lake Drive utility project. The proposed improvements will include replacement of sagging sanitary pipes, manholes, water system replacement, roadway reconstruction and restoration of adjacent property at and near the intersection of East Shadow Lake Drive and Lantern Lane. City Engineer Diane Hankee explained that the project will result in reduced inflow and infi ltration of groundwater into the sanitary sewer system. The estimated total project cost is $510,000.

The city will likely award a contract at its March 28 meeting so construction can begin in May or April; final completion will likely be in October.

The city will also consider bids for an alternate project, which would include the East Shadow Lake Drive cul-de-sac.

The next City Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 28, at City Hall. A work session is also scheduled for immediately beforehand.

He is kennel-trained and is working on his basic commands. That said, he is very treatmotivated and eager to learn and to please, so his training is going very well. Skarsgard does well with all people and with other dogs his size. He may not do well in a home with smaller dogs or cats, however.

COVID-19 BRIEF The Minnesota Department Health (MDH) is expanding its successful program to provide Minnesotans with free COVID-19 at-home rapid testing through community-based organizations around the state.

MDH is providing 347,000 rapid antigen test kits to local public health agencies, tribal health, food shelves, and MDH COVID-19 Community Coordinators (CCCs) to provide for free to the communities they serve throughout February and March. Each kit contains two tests.

Providing free at-home rapid testing through local public health and community groups will help reduce barriers and expand testing access for Minnesotans who are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. This disbursement comes after an initial distribution of 150,000 test kits to community groups in January. Groups receiving tests will communicate to their communities about how to pick them up.

“Rapid testing is a key tool Minnesotans can use to lower the risk of spreading COVID-19 to their

families and their communities.

Even as transmission rates go down, it’s important that Minnesotans use resources like rapid testing if they feel sick,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm.

“By partnering with community groups and local health agencies, we’re making it easier for vulnerable Minnesotans to get the resources they need to continue staying safe and preventing the spread of COVID-19.

In addition to this community partnership, Minnesota has secured 3.6 million rapid tests for schools to provide to students, staff and teachers to monitor symptoms at home and stay safe in the classroom. The state has also secured 550,000 rapid tests to distribute through child care facilities.

Minnesota also offers free rapid testing at many of the state’s two dozen community testing sites.

URING THE PANDEMIC, volunteers have become more important than ever. They have bridged the gap for transportation, groceries, medical care, child care and overcoming loneliness.

Food shelves and food banks have been used more by families in need and volunteers have been there to sort, bag and assist in many ways.

Loss of work days due to illness, child care, and schools going to remote learning have seriously affected incomes.

Government subsidies have been cut back and the increase in inflation directly affects household incomes. The affect is greater for those with low incomes as food, fuel and medical costs take a larger chunk.

Be sure to thank those who volunteer and give yourself a pat on the back if you are About the one.

EVERY FALL AND winter pesky rodents like mice and rats like to find a warm place to reside for the winter. Little red squirrels can also be trouble. Traps and bait are varied by types and sizes. We have found peanut butter and cheese are good bait.

Last week I heard a new trapping idea from a longtime friend who lives in Dellwood, Minnesota. He uses a five-gallon pail with a quarter inch of cooking oil in the bottom. The rodents climb in, get oiled, can’t get out and die.

NATIONAL NEWS HAS brought attention to the record low 30 degree temperatures in Florida. One of the warnings posted is about the iguanas falling out of the trees. Don’t laugh. Living winters in Fort Myers, this is a reality.

When temperatures drop into the 40s, the bodies of the cold-blooded iguanas slow down and become immobile. However, most of them survive this and as the day warms up, so do the iguanas.

GREEN IGUANAS ARE not native to Florida, but were accidentally introduced as stowaways in cargo ships. They are considered an invasive species. They come from Central and South American countries close to the equator.

Our favorite cruising in the Caribbean is the Exuma islands, southeast of Nassau.

A large group of iguanas live on the small island of Bitter Guana Cay. They are studied by science students who anchor near the island and come ashore by tender.

We dinghy in from anchor and feed the iguanas fresh vegetables. They also live on several other islands in the Exumas. The world population has dwindled to 5,000.

NFL FOOTBALL WILL not be the same without Tom Brady. He is retiring after 22 seasons and seven Super Bowls. A disciplined and committed player who ends a remarkable career on top.

Get the garden party started by starting seeds indoors

L

iving in Minnesota has its perks; unfortunately, the length of our growing season is not one of them. You can overcome this challenge and extend your growing season by starting seeds indoors.

Many vegetables and flowers should be started inside, and most seed packets provide instructions. Before you begin, it’s important to know the length of your growing season, first and last frost dates, and basic growing condition information specific to your plant.

Here are some important tips for seedGardener’s starting success.

Grapevine

Selecting seed: You can find seeds at several types of brickand-mortar retailers, although they are typically limited to more common varieties. Online retailers offer a wider array of seed options including rare and unique varieties. It is best to use seed packaged for the current growing season, but many seeds remain viable for several years if stored properly. A simple germination test (instructions can be found online) can help determine seed viability.

Seed-starting mix: There are many seed-starting

mixes available for purchase, or you can make your own using materials like vermiculite, peat, and coco coir. You can even find recipes online. Do not use regular potting soil, as it is typically too heavy for seeds and may lead to mold, root rot or other seedling failure.

Containers: The options for seed-starting containers and trays are practically endless, with hardware stores and garden centers carrying many alternatives. Some choices include reusable plastic containers or one-timeuse biodegradable pots. You can also repurpose common household items such as plastic drinking cups, egg cartons, and newspaper. Whatever container you choose, it is essential that you provide good drainage.

Planting and Growing: • Follow the package directions for planting depth. The general rule is to sow the seed approximately four times as deep as its width.

• Keep the soil mix thoroughly moist by using a spray bottle or bottom-watering method. Do not leave excess water in the container or tray.

• Label containers with the variety name and planting date.

• Follow requirements for light, moisture level, and temperature. A heat mat might be necessary.

• Cover the container with a plastic dome or plastic wrap until the seeds germinate.

• Consider planting extra seeds

in case of low germination rates. To remove extra seedlings, cut off the weaker ones at the soil line rather than pulling them out.

• Use a fan at the lowest setting to improve airflow and help reduce the risk of mold. Some gardeners also use cinnamon to prevent damping-off disease, and while there are no scientific studies to prove it works, it won’t harm your plants to try.

• Apply a weekly all-purpose, water-soluble fertilizer mixed at one-fourth strength once the seedlings have several sets of true leaves.

• Transplant seedlings if they outgrow their container, but do not handle them by the stem.

What does Black History Month mean to me? Growing up as a minority, I was often made to feel as though my background and history was unimportant, Student given my school environment. I was Voices educated about the U.S presidents Sumaya and why they were Ahmed memorable, but couldn’t understand the importance of Black history.

Students were able to learn about topics such as slavery and Jim Crow laws, but they were unconnected to influential people who spurred many movements. People such as W.E.B Dubois, an early civil rights activist, established education opportunities and equal rights for African Americans.

Through reading on the legacy of W.E.B Dubois and other prominent Black figures, I learned that there is more to Black history than the horrific reality of slavery and oppression that has haunted our community and is often focused on in history courses. That is of course, if there is any attention paid to Black history at all.

In relation, several students within the community have expressed and discussed their experiences at Centennial. Galjer Yangwaue, a junior at Centennial High School, states, “Black History Month is important for me to remember and learn more about impactful and memorable black people in history.

It’s important to remember and bring awareness to BIPOC influence in history because we are often

silenced in the media.‘’ Yangwaue is referring to how social media today is used for many reasons, whether it’s spreading awareness or sharing lifestyles.

Nowadays, we are able to use social media as a form of educating the public.

While February is used as a month to represent influential Black people, this topic should still be actively discussed outside of the month.

With more students connecting and talking about important figures, some are able to express certain goals they’d like to achieve in the community.

Yangwaue states, “I wish I could see more representation of BIPOC in the media, government, and student leadership positions.” While many BIPOC students at Centennial strive to attain student leadership positions, other schools share similar problems. Schools in urban areas have a small black population compared to the white population.

One similar problem for schools in urban areas with a smaller black population, is their unfulfi llment of core classes that cover historical topics. Classes such as history and English aren’t taught to the fullest extent, and lack the education that is needed to fully educate it’s white and BIPOC students. Students aren’t able to recognize this, which leads to them being undereducated about American history.

You might wonder how this problem even relates to you, but it’s important to understand how we came to where we are today. What we do now impacts our future, so how can we educate our youth about this? What steps can we take to address this problem? I leave the answer up to you.

CITY BRIEF Council approves membership rates, hours for Rookery

LINO LAKES — Membership rates for 2022 as well as the hours of operation for the Rookery Activity Center (RAC) have now been approved by the City Council.

Once the RAC opens up this spring, the hours of operation will be 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

For membership, there will be rates for residents and nonresidents, as well as options for an annual or monthly membership. Memberships fall into several categories, including adult, dual, senior, youth and family. There are also options for visitor passes. Annual memberships for residents range from $605 up to $1,1100 a year or $55 to $100 per month. For updates

New positions continue to be hired for the RAC. Lisa Lamey has already started as the activity center manager. Final interviews for the aquatics supervisor took place last week. In addition to full-time positions like activity center coordinators, admin/ accounting/human resources, building maintenance/operations supervisor and custodial workers, there will also be part-time positions. These include front desk, child watch lead and workers, recreation programming, custodial/ maintenance, lifeguards and swim instructors.

Provide input on deer populations, observations

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input via an online survey regarding 2021 deer populations and observations. The survey includes questions about experiences hunters had during the deer hunting season; issues related to damage deer might do to crops, landscaping or gardens; and other deer-related issues. Light goose conservation action begins Feb. 18 Hunters can help reduce the population of light geese through a federally authorized spring conservation harvest that runs Feb. 18 through April 30. Light geese are snow geese, blue-phased snow geese and the smaller Ross’s goose.

Harvest regulations can be found online at mndnr.gov/hunting/ waterfowl/lightgoose/index.html.

The conservation action aims to reduce damage from these geese to fragile ecosystems in Arctic coastal areas and around Hudson Bay.

• Officers were dispatched to a suspicious activity call in the 7000 block of Centerville Road in Centerville Feb. 9.

• An officer was dispatched to the 3500 block of Restwood Road in Lexington for a theft report Feb. 9.

• An officer was dispatched to the 7200 block of Unity Avenue in Centerville for a mail theft report Feb. 9. The night shift officer conducted a follow-up and arrested an adult female for mail theft.

• A vehicle was stolen from the 7200 block of Unity Avenue in Centerville Feb. 9.

• An officer observed a traffic violation near the intersection of County Road J and Indian Hills Drive in Circle Pines Feb. 9. A citation was issued.

The Lino Lakes Police Department reported the following incidents: • An officer was requested to assist another agency on a warrant arrest on Main Street and 20th Avenue Feb. 8. The officer stood by while the arrest was made.

• An officer responded to a phone call report of suspicious activity on Main Street and Lake Drive Feb. 8. The incident was documented.

• An officer was dispatched on a phone call report regarding a civil dispute in the 1200 block of Main Street Feb. 8. The officer spoke with both parties, and they were able to reach an agreement.

• An officer handled a report of suspected fraud in the 800 block of Fox Road Feb. 8. No suspects were identified, and another state agency is handling the investigation.

• An officer responded to a suspicious activity report in the 400 block of Arrowhead Drive Feb. 8.

The officer documented the information.

• While on patrol, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 7600 block of Lake Drive Feb. 9. After an investigation, the driver was arrested for driving while impaired and was later booked at jail.

• An officer was dispatched to a residential burglary alarm in the 6300 block of Mineral Point Feb. 9. The officer arrived and found the house to be secure.

• An officer was dispatched to a phone call report regarding a citation in the 800 block of Birch Street Feb. 9. The officer provided the caller with information for the citation.

• Officers responded to an alarm at a business in the 6800 block of 21st Avenue South Feb. 9. The building was checked and all appeared to be secure.

Officers responded to alarms sounding in a home in the 6200 block of Hollow Lane Feb. 10. The alarms sounding were smoke alarms, and fi re personnel took over the incident. There were no signs of smoke or fi re.

An officer received a civil report involving a dispute over an item one person sold to another in the 6700 block of 21st Avenue South Feb. 10. The parties agreed on a solution.

An officer received a report of a single-vehicle rollover in the 6800 block of Otter Lake Road Feb. 10. The officer responded, checked on the involved party and found they were not injured. The officer investigated and a state crash report was completed.

Officers responded to a delayed package theft report in the 6600 block of Lacasse Drive Feb. 10.

The officer collected information and checked the area for the suspect vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle that had been parked running in the street for an unusual amount of time in the 6500 block of Whitetail Trail Feb. 10. The officers located the vehicle and the male driver moved the vehicle.

An officer responded to what was reported as a construction dumpster fi re in the 6600 block of Heritage Avenue Feb. 10. The officer arrived and found the fi re was actually a frost mitigation system for the construction project and wasn’t a threat to structures. The fi re division arrived and handled the investigation.

An officer assisted another agency on a property damage crash on I-35 and Lake Drive Feb. 10. The officer stood by and provided emergency lights for scene safety.

An officer responded to a report of a property damage accident in the 900 block of Pheasant Run South Feb. 10. The officer investigated and completed a state crash report.

An officer was requested by Anoka County Highway Department to tow a vehicle from the roadway in the 6600 block of 20th Avenue Feb. 11.

The vehicle was towed to the Twin Cities.

An officer took a call of a hit-and-run property damage crash on Morgan Lane and Gotland Lane Feb. 11. After an investigation, an adult male was charged with leaving the scene of the crash.

Officers responded to a possible threat at a home in the 6200 block of Red Maple Lane Feb. 11. Through investigation, the officers learned there was no active threat. Extra patrol will be provided.

An officer responded to a suspicious activity report in the 100 block of Mustang Court Feb. 11. The officers did not observe any apparent problems. The officer left written information from the owners of the residence and the vehicle.

An officer took a suspicious activity report which involved unknown people on a resident’s property who left at a high rate of speed in a vehicle in the 7100 block of Sunset Avenue Feb. 11. The officer checked the area and was unable to locate the vehicle. Extra patrol will be provided.

Officers responded to an electrical pole that was sparking on an I-35W on-ramp at Lake Drive Feb. 11. Fire personnel and Xcel Energy responded and handled the incident.

An officer responded to a phone call to assist another agency with an informational request in the 600 block of Town Center Parkway Feb. 11.

The other agency was assisted.

An officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic offense in the 6500 block of I-35E and found that the driver did not have a valid driver’s license Feb. 12. The driver was stopped a second time shortly after the fi rst stop. The driver was arrested and booked after the second offense.

Officers responded to a business on a report of an alarm sounding in the 7600 block of Lake Drive Feb. 12. Officers found the business to be secure.

Officers responded to an audible alarm in the 600 block of Highland Trail Feb. 12. Officers found the house to be secure and there were no signs of a problem.

• An officer responded to a vehicle in a ditch in the 600 block of Aqua Lane Feb. 13. The officer was able to push the vehicle back onto the roadway.

• An officer conducted a traffic stop for multiple traffic violations in the 8100 block of Lake Drive Feb. 13. The male driver was cited and released.

• An officer responded to a property damage crash involving a plow truck and a passenger car in the 500 block of Hawthorn Road Feb. 14. The drivers exchanged information at the scene. A state crash report was completed.

• An officer took a report of suspicious activity in the 6200 block of Red Maple Lane Feb. 14. The officer documented the incident and provided the caller with advice on next steps to take.

• An officer received a suspicious activity report regarding a snowmobiler who rode through private property in the 1500 block of Ash Street Feb. 14. Extra patrol will be provided.

• Officers responded to a residence on a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of Town Center Parkway Feb. 14. Officers did not locate the vehicle. An officer documented the incident.

• Officers assisted another agency in getting information regarding a theft case in the 300 block of Linda Lane Feb. 14.

10 people charged for Best Buy Black Friday theft BLAINE — Nearly three months after the incident took place, the Blaine Police Department has tracked down 10 individuals who were allegedly involved in the Best Buy heist on Black Friday.

On Nov. 26, a group of 14 men, women and juveniles entered the Best Buy store on Northtown Drive NE in Blaine, selected multiple electronic items and ran out of the store without paying for these items. The items were valued around $5,600.

Blaine detectives soon learned that the same group of suspects may also be responsible for similar thefts at Best Buy locations in Maplewood and Burnsville as well as a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Richfield on the same day. The total dollar amount stolen from the Best Buy locations exceeded $26,000.

Detectives from Maplewood Police Department, Burnsville Police Department and Blaine Police Department and crime analysts worked on the case for over two months, analyzing multiple social media resources to identify the suspects involved in the Blaine incident.

After receiving multiple tips, conducting hours of surveillance, and searching social media, Blaine detectives were able to identify 10 individuals — eight adults and two juveniles — who were allegedly responsible for the Blaine Best Buy theft.

The adult suspects have been identified as: Raymone Wright, 22, of Minneapolis; Nathaniel Spears, 27, of Albany; Shaimee RobinsonLove, 18, of Bloomington; Na’ Touri Ross, 19, of Minneapolis; Rolanda Lott, 38, of Roseville; Iyahanna Turner, 19, Minneapolis; Myeisha Hall, 20, Brooklyn Park; and Mijuanna Mapp, 19, of Winona.

All 10 individuals have been charged with felony theft. Prosecutors charged the two juveniles via a juvenile petition.

Girls hockey: Cougars trip Rogers, then fall to Crimson in section finals BRUCE STRAND CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Centennial/Spring Lake Park finished runner-up in Section 5AA after rallying to defeat Rogers 2-1 in the semifinals, then falling to top-seeded Maple Grove 4-2 in the championship game, last week.

The Cougars had a final 18-9-1 record after sectionals at Roseville Ice Arena.

They had lost to Rogers 2-0 and Maple Grove 2-1 in conference play.

Seeded third, the Cougars scored twice in the last five minutes to defeat No. 2 Rogers on Tuesday evening.

Callie Cody tied the score 1-1 with a power play goal, assisted by Hannah Thompson, with 4:27 left. Ella O’Hearn gave the Cougars 2-1 lead on a goal with 2:13 left, assisted by Cody and Katie Ball.

Goalie Kaitlin Groess stopped 21 of 22 shots, giving up a goal to Paige Vreeman late in the second period.

Maple Grove (20-6-2) finished strong to wrest the section title from the defending champion Cougars on Friday evening, breaking a 2-2 with third-period goals by Ella Olson and Stella Retrum.

Boys basketball: Cougars top Duluth and (at long last) Champlin The Centennial boy cagers enjoyed their best week of the season, with their fi rst two-game win streak and fi rst victory over Champlin Park in nine years.

A busy week started with the Cougars (6-16) getting drubbed by Coon Rapids 72-35 there Monday. KhiJohnn Cummings-Coleman hit 19 points and Elijah Smith 15 for the Cardinals (15-7). Luke Clark sank 22 points for Centennial.

The Cougars pulled out a 5249 win over Duluth East at home Wednesday. Andrew Gerten, off the bench, sank a three-pointer and a layup down the stretch for all five of his points, keeping the Cougars in front, and they made a defensive stop in the final seconds. Clark netted 15 points and Reese Neudahl 14 for the Cougars. Isaac Nyakundi notched 22

for the Greyhounds (10-12).

The Cougars edged Champlin Park 77-76 at home Friday, with Kevin Jansa sinking a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch. That snapped an 18-game losing streak against the Rebels since the 2013 team beat them in the playoffs. The Rebels (6-16) have slipped this year but beat the Cougars 68-62 in their fi rst meeting.

Clark tallied 22 points, Neudahl 17, Jansa 12, Jack D’Agostino 11 and Taiden Johnson nine. Coach Spencer Waldvogel cited D’Agostino, a freshman who was averaging 3.5 points, for giving the Cougars a big boost, and Clark and Will Quick for strong defense. Aho Taki and Ethan Lukandwa scored 17 each for the Rebels.

Alpine Skiing: Flohaug places 64th at state meet

Jordin Flohaug, Centennial eighth-grader, placed 64th among 88 entrants in the state Alpine ski meet on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Giants Ridge in Biwabik,Minnesota.

“State was an amazing experience, and it was fun to represent Centennial,” Flohaug said. “I was nervous leading up to my run, but had so much support from my coaches and team, it made me excited for the opportunity I had. I have four more years to improve and hope to get back to state again.”

Marisa Frost runs the offense with aplomb for the surging Centennial basketball team while averaging 9.3 points and leading with 3.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game. “Marisa has been a rock running our offense,” coach Jamie Sobolik said. “She’s been taking great care of the ball and finding open teammates. She’s very shifty with her hesitations, and very difficult to guard.” During the Cougars’ current eight game win streak, the 5-foot-8 sophomore is averaging 11 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.7 steals, while shooting 59 percent on three’s, including 5-for-6 against Coon Rapids.

Flohaug qualified for state with an eighth-place finish in her section. Incidentally, two days after skiing in frigid northern Minnesota, she was playing soccer in 72 degrees in an Arizona tournament.

Boys hockey: Cougars trip Bears in overtime, head into sectionals The Centennial skaters capped the regular season with an overtime victory over White Bear Lake, 4-3, last Thursday and will take a 17-5-3 into Section 5AA. The Cougars, seeded third, will host No. 6 Totino-Grace on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The winner faces No. 2 Maple Grove or No. 7 Spring Lake Park on Saturday, 7 p.m., at Fogerty Arena in Blaine.

Rogers, which beat the Cougars 3-1 in the conference finale on Tuesday, is the top seed in the section.

Against the Bears (14-10), Jacob Hoylo’s rebound goal just 1:07 into the overtime settled the issue on the Bears’ ice. Brody Pass and Cade Anderson assisted.

“Great play by Owen (Van Tassel, ) creating the turnover and getting the puck to the net,” coach Ritch Menne said. “But, an even better play by our guys driving the net, and Jake being in a terrific spot to score the game winner

on a rebound. We had been talking the whole game about winning battles in front of both nets.”

Also scoring for the Cougars were Van Tassel (power play), Anderson and Peyton Blair. Pass made two assists.

Goalie Jack Fuller made 25 saves while giving up goals to Tyler Bishop, Charlie Olsen, and Nicky O’Brien.

Rogers (17-7-1) notched a goal in each period, by Sam Ranallo, Trent Peluf and Matt Lomen, to beat the host Cougars.

Each team had 27 shots on goal. Blair had the Cougar goal on a power play in the first period.

The Cougars were fourth among 13 teams in the Northwest Suburban. The top four were Andover 13-2 (26 points), Rogers 11-0-1 (23), Maple Grove 11-3-1 (23) and the Cougars 9-4-2 (20).

Rausch said the hope is to use the site in Lino Lakes for only 12 months.

“Over the last 15 years, we have been working really hard to bring business up to this area. We got Distribution Alternatives in, which turned out to be a pretty good customer.” Rausch said. “We have about (500,000)-square-feet of hightech buildings that we are hoping to eventually place here (on the Lino Lakes site).”

Rausch added, “These are really high-end office, showroom, hightech groups that are interested in being right where this black dirt pile is. We want it to be there for 12 months or less, but we have got to get through some wetland impacts… The Rehbeins are hoping to break even on this. They are not going to make money. They are not going to bring in any more dirt, they are just going to get rid of what we have there. And then make it go away forever, ideally.”

The city of Lino Lakes should see an application come forward within the

next year, according to Rausch.

Centerville City Administrator Mark Statz said, “We have not yet received any formal applications for development, but are aware that the owner is working with a builder on a project that could potentially take all 40 acres. The identity and/or type of the potential end-user has not been shared at this point.”

The Lino Lakes Planning Commission has unanimously recommended the council approve the CUP, which includes nine conditions.

The operation would also need to meet a lengthy list of conditions under the Earth Moving and Land Reclamation section of city code.

The CUP would be valid for three years, and then be up for annual renewal. The City Council will consider the CUP at its March 14 meeting.

Finders of these kindness rocks can either keep them or re-hide them to surprise

someone else. “I have kept a couple of rocks that I have found, but I like to rehide them,” Heilman said. “It’s all about spreading that joy and surprise and passing along that uplifting and positive message from person to person.”

recalled one rock she hid that was discovered by a 2-year-old. The girl’s mother followed the instructions on the label and posted a photo of her daughter with the rock. “She was just so happy.

They decided to hide the rock in another part of

the park in hopes that someone else would find it and make them just as happy,” she said.

The key to “hiding” the rocks is that you want them to be in unexpected places, but not make it so tough that they can never be found.

Next time you

are out for a stroll, be sure to look down every once in a while, in case you happen to come across a rock with a message.

But as the photos show, the 9,400-square-foot island home on Bald Eagle Lake looks a lot different than it did when Nathan Landucci bought it in 2016.

The owner of Stillwater-based Landucci Homes Inc. originally planned to live on the 2.3-acre island, but said his plans changed when he decided to completely renovate the 35-year-old home.

The luxury homebuilder spared no expense in the makeover, noting that the exterior walls and foundation are about all that’s left of the original.

The listing for the five-bedroom home includes features like all new Marvin windows, top-end Sub Zero/Wolf appliances in a deluxe chef’s kitchen, garage bar, league-size racquetball court, screened porch and multiple decks. There is a professional home theater with star ceiling, and a whole-house audio system. The smart home is controlled by iPads throughout. There is a six-stall garage and new docks, plus the home comes fully furnished MDAN with Restoration Hardware furniture. A rebuilt hovercraft is part of the package, too, when winter ice conditions don’t merit driving a vehicle.

Landucci is the broker for the home and the builder. His company specializes in building and remodeling high-end homes. Their claim to fame, he said, is hyper-detailed luxury construction.

“It’s an incredible place,” he said. “I decided early to fi x it up and build it for someone special. They could live here year-round or part-time.”

He’s already had a showing of the property and more are scheduled. So yes, there is interest at that price point. No tire kickers need apply for a time slot. Prospective buyers are vetted before showings.

Congregation shares worship space with Hispanic community What started as a Wednesday prayer meeting and Bible study in Spanish at First Presbyterian Church has evolved into a Saturday worship service for the whole family.

The White Bear church, formed in 1864, is sharing its space with ICASA, which means House of God Church. “Our purpose is to build a Christian community in order to have a relationship with God, but also be able to support each other as individuals and families in the different realities that we face daily as a Hispanic community,” explained its pastor, Alfonso Morales.

ICASA started in 2019 in White Bear Lake with the blessing of the Presbyterian congregation.

“They’ve been a great support to this new community, and we are grateful to them,” added the pastor.

The Press did a story on Morales, a credentialed Assemblies of God pastor, and ICASA in 2019 when the church was putting down roots. Morales said he had no intention of becoming a pastor, but had a change of heart in response to the love and care his family received when they fled Guatemala in ‘94 and sought political asylum in the United States.

Morales and his wife Vilma were social workers, and helped the poor in tumultuous areas of the Latin American country. When political tensions rose, they no longer felt safe and fled their homeland.

“Christian families helped us start a new life here,” Morales recalled. “We learned about God.” His church, ICASA, is an acronym that describes what the church is about. The letter I stands for the Spanish verb ir, which means go. C stands for conectar (connect). A is for adorar or worship. S stands for server (serve). A represents aprender (learn).

The church planting process was interrupted due to the pandemic, but the church is again holding its 6:30 p.m. Wednesday prayer meeting and Bible study and 6:30 p.m. Saturday worship service. Child care is offered and is free.

Morales is hoping word will spread that a Spanish service is available in the city. According to the pastor, the church mapped the area around First Presbyterian and found that there are an estimated 200 Spanish-speaking families within a few miles of its Bloom Avenue location.

His mission, the pastor noted, is to “reconcile every person with God for eternal life. We want to build Christian communities in different cities and become the same church in several communities.

We hope that each person can become what God expects from each one of us in our purpose in life.”

Playwright helps Holocaust survivor tell brother’s story

The story of a young but gifted artist named Heinz Geiringer who perished in the Holocaust has been brought to life through a union of one woman’s remarkable memory and the talents of a White Bear Lake playwright.

Call it providential, but how Auschwitz survivor Eva Geiringer Schloss and Claudia Haas met and the collaboration that resulted in “My Brother’s Gift” is a story, too.

Haas was in Danville, Iowa, doing research at the Anne Frank Connection Museum for another play, “Dear Anne, from Nina.” It’s about the real-life pen pal of Anne Frank, a girl named Nina who lived in Danville.

Most know the story of Anne Frank and her famous diary, written while she was hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam during the German occupation. Anne and older sister Margot died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. Their mother died at Auschwitz.

Only their father, Otto Frank, survived.

The Danville curator told Haas that another Holocaust survivor, Eva Geiringer Schloss, had visited the museum only a week before. Schloss dropped off reproductions of her brother’s paintings in hopes they would be displayed. Would Haas like to see them?

“They were beautiful,” the playwright recalled. “Some made me happy, some showed despair. Heinz was in hiding when he did them, and just a teenager. I knew I needed to write about his extraordinary art.”

The librarian shared Schloss’ London address with Haas, who promised not to stalk the woman if she didn’t respond.

But Schloss did respond. Seems telling her brother’s story in a play for young people was something she’d always dreamed of.

Schloss, 92, speaks internationally on the Holocaust and the importance of peace and tolerance.

She also works to bring her brother’s artistry to the world and to celebrate his ability to find hope and healing in art

during a terrible time in world history.

Three years in the making, every word of “My Brother’s Gift” was approved by Schloss. That was the deal, said Haas, an award-winning playwright, retired theater teacher and director who has published about 50 plays.

“I promised Eva I would do everything I could to showcase her brother’s amazing artistry as a teen. Eva hopes other young people who find the world challenging can be inspired by him,” Haas said.

The play opens on a crowded cattle car transporting the Geiringer family to Auschwitz in southern Poland.

Heinz, 17, wants Eva, 15, to promise him she will return to their Amsterdam hiding place and retrieve his paintings and poetry after the war. They were hidden beneath floorboards in the attic.

Her brother realized how dangerous life had become for Jews, Schloss said. “Many young Jewish people were killed. He was so sensitive, and became very afraid of dying. He asked my father, ‘what happens when we die’? My father said, ‘everyone dies.’ He told him he would never be forgotten; that we are all linked in a long chain from generation to generation and nothing is lost.”

Schloss kept her promise and returned with her mother to the Amsterdam house.

“After the terrible things we experienced, I had forgotten about the paintings,” she said. “I had to accept that my brother and father were never coming back.” The play touches on her mother’s reluctance to return to their hiding place. She was afraid to face the person they knew betrayed them to the Nazis. But strangers opened the door and allowed them to search the attic. About 20 paintings were there, with a note and a book of poetry, just as Heinz had told her.

As a sidenote, Fritzi Geiringer, Eva’s mother, married Otto Frank in 1953.

Posthumously, then, Anne and Margot Frank became Eva’s stepsisters.

The Geiringers had been neighbors of the Frank family and Eva knew Anne, Haas explained. Eva was a friend, but they were not close. “Anne was boy crazy and into clothes, and Eva was more a tomboy,”

she said. Anne was also smitten with Heinz, a studious boy who played chess and taught himself four languages.

Both families went into hiding at the same time after Margot Frank and Heinz were “called up” by the Nazis to serve in labor camps. When they were captured, Anne Frank left behind her famous diary.

Heinz Geiringer left his art and poetry.

The playwright has grown close to Schloss, who married an Israeli in ‘52 and raised three daughters in Great Britain.

Haas describes the nonagenarian as “a force of nature.”

“She’s so remarkable,” Haas said.

“She’s blunt, funny and opinionated.

She attributes her survival to luck and miracles.”

The Soviets liberated Auschwitz on Jan. 27, 1945. Weeks earlier, knowing the Red Army was closing in, the Nazis marched able-bodied men in freezing temperatures, including Heinz and his father, to the Mauthausen labor camp in Austria.

Eva was told her father died from exhaustion when they arrived at the camp. Heinz succumbed in May, days before Germany surrendered.

Haas plans to host her friend in White Bear Lake sometime in April when Eva plans a visit to the Midwest. The playwright is working on arranging readings from the play with several theater groups. “I’d love for Eva to hear it,” Haas said.

At press time, Haas learned that Lakeshore Players Theatre will hold a reading of “My Brother’s Gift,” April 18.

I want to show them here is someone who used art under unconscionable circumstances to help him cope.”
