Sorenson, therapist at Golden Lake Elementary, and Lee Carlson therapist Rachel Kouba, who also serves in that role at Fridley Middle School, presented on the topic of anxiety in children at a Golden Lake PTA meeting March 19.

Principal Christopher Gerst said it couldn’t be a better time to create a dialogue on the topic, as elementary schools are seeing an increase in children who are dealing with anxiety.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders affect 25 percent of children between ages 13-18. Based on the most recent data collected from National Survey of Children’s Health, there was a 20 percent increase in anxiety diagnoses between 2007 and 2012 for ages 6 to 17.

“We have seen an increase in the number of students who have anxiety play a role into their day at school.

Anxiety, in one way or another, can infringe on their ability to learn in the classroom,” Gerst explained. “Anxiety is more prevalent than people think.

Local girls gain friends, character joining Scouts BSA

CIRCLE PINES — Most Scouts wait until spring to go on their first campout and fulfill this Tenderfoot rank requirement: “Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch.” Not Scouts BSA Troop 65.

The girls’ first campout was Feb. 23-24, the snowiest February on record, when they pitched tents at Rum River Scout Camp near Ramsey.

The girls have only been Scouts since early February, since Scouts BSA (formerly known as Boy Scouts of America) opened registration for girls Feb. 1. Because many of the girls are in high school, they are

progressing through the ranks quickly before they turn 18. (For this year only, however, girls who will be 18 in 2019 are granted a two-year extension.)

Scoutmaster Terri Johnson said that since this is the first year that girls can join Scouts, everyone is extremely motivated to participate.

Gaining approval Even though girls can join Scouts BSA, a troop must get approval to register girls from its charter organization. A charter organization is any organization that partners with a troop to offer Scouting to the local community. Charter SEE SCOUTS BSA GIRLS, PAGE 9

Geography wiz heads to state competition

For the second year in a row, Centennial Middle School (CMS) seventh-grader Ava Nibbelink has snagged a spot in the top 10 for the school’s geography bee.

“Ava is very conscientious and excited about learning. She is an awesome student and friend.

She studies very hard and puts in the extra time and work, and that’s why she won this event,” said CMS social studies teacher Andy Marshall.

“She enjoys digging deeper into anything she is learning. She does have a passion for geography.”

Nibbelink first became interested in the subject of geography when she made it into her school geography bee in the fourth grade. “That’s when I really started studying a lot,” she said.

In order to make it into the top 10 at CMS, Nibbelink had to take a qualifying test, semifinal qualifying test and a final test. Marshall said Nibbelink was up against 1,500 other students just at the school level. Marshall explained Nibbelink was the only girl in the top 10.

After gaining the title of “school champion,” Nibbelink took a qualifying test and scored in the top 100, which gained her a spot in the National Geographic GeoBee state contest March 29 at the University of Minnesota.

Now in its 31st year, the National Geographic GeoBee was developed by the National Geographic Society to promote geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Nearly 10,000 schools in grades 4-8 participate annually in the academic competition.

Although Nibbelink has made it to CMS’ top 10 before, this will be the first time she will attend the state contest. In order to prepare, she studies about an hour a day by making flash cards and having her dad ask her questions about the globe.

“I am really excited and I am a little nervous,” she said. “I think it will be fun to go there and learn what the competition is like at that level so maybe next year I will do really good. I really

Even though Nibbelink loves geography, her favorite subject is actually math: she loves numbers. She is involved in Future Problem Solvers (FPS), which will head to the state competition the day after the state GeoBee. The winner of the GeoBee state contest will receive a medal and $1,000 in cash, and will go on to represent Minnesota at the National Championship May 19-22 at the National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The national champ will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II. There are also prizes for second and third place.

“We are really proud of her. She is going to do great,” Marshall said. “There will be super tough questions, but she will be ready. She has aced every test so far.”

Centennial Area Education Foundation to host 16th annual gala

After making a significant impact on the middle school and each of the elementary schools in the district, the Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF) is now hoping to raise funds for the high school.

“We have done technology for the middle school, and then last year we did technology for the elementary schools,” said CAEF President Jan Kreminski. “By doing that, we have cycled through all the schools in the district.”

CAEF’s 16th annual Gala will be held Saturday, April 6. This will be the third year the event has been held at Infinite Campus in Blaine, which is not only a host for the event but a big sponsor. CAEF Marketing/ Communications Chair Kelley Boyer said for the last several years, the event has sold out.

The Gala raises money not only for CAEF’s general fund budget — used for numerous scholarships and grants to people/organizations within the community — but also a special “Fund the Need” project.

“The foundation is doing well and continues to grow due to the generous donations, not only at the Gala but outside of that through private donations,” Kreminski explained.

“Our main focus is on grants and scholarships. Our grant requests continue to rise to levels far beyond what we can ever hope to fund.”

The event will feature dinner and a live and silent auction. Auction items include: Hugh Jackman or Cher concert tickets, Minnesota Twins suite, Total Wine wine-tasting class, Disney World park hopper passes, Duluth getaway at Superior Shores, wine and painting party, Infinite Campus shooting range experience for eight, and Pay it Forward (Centennial teacher day off).

The guest speaker will be Bryan Skavnak, an inspiring speaker and writer who is the author of “Happy Golf Starts Here” and the founder of the Bryan Skavnak Golf Academy.

Last year’s event brought in a total of around $90,000. The $30,500 that was raised for “Fund the Need” went to purchase Makerspace equipment for all five elementary schools in the district. The carts enhance creative opportunities in computer science and engineering. “‘Fund the Need’ has become such

an important part of the Gala. It allows us to make a really significant difference on something that is big and meaningful,” Boyer said, adding this year’s goal is to raise $36,000 for the purchase of Chromebooks for the high school.

“Technology needs here at the high school are increasing, and teachers are moving more into blended learning within the classroom. Blended learning is using the traditional model along with incorporating in technology,” explained high school Principal Tom Breuning.

it is vital to increase the number of devices is because the district utilizes the learning management system Schoology.

“Schoology is almost like a Facebook format for students and teachers in education. Within (Schoology) they can incorporate in videos, lessons and tests,” Breuning said. “It allows teachers to differentiate. If they get to a point where they need to take part of the class into higher learning, they can do that and then they can group and pull kids back that may not be understanding the content and work more individually with them.”

The devices will also help to prepare the students for what comes next.

“We feel this is important because

it is really preparing students for the skills they need when they go on to universities and tech schools,” Breuning said. “Our students are digital natives. It is giving them access and preparing them for life beyond these walls.”

Humane perspective

O

n the drive over to Bethel College to attend a presentation by photojournalist John Moore, I prepared myself to be humbled.

I have great appreciation for the talent, sacrifice and perseverance needed to establish a career and national reputation in any endeavor and more specifically — photojournalism.

His presentation was indeed humbling, but it was also inspiring, informative and reaffirming. Some of the fundamental practices Moore shared, including attaching clear and accurate captions to his photos before sending them out into the world, could be applied to all levels of journalism, including local community newspapers.

Not seeking to vilify anyone Angle of on either side of the southern border, Moore’s presentation View and images illustrated an issue Paul Dols that is complicated and nuanced.

He said that he tried not to pass judgment, but sought to humanize the issue. While documenting difficult situations, his photographs display a level of professionalism, beauty and human empathy I believe anyone practicing photojournalism would aspire to achieve. While talking with Press Publications editor and reporter Sara Moore (who also attended and wrote a story about the event), she commented on the breadth of knowledge Moore has gained through his years of experience documenting both immigrants and border patrol officials along the length of the border between the United States and Mexico. It made me think that he probably knows more than the vast majority of the politicians and pundits currently promoting their viewpoints and opinions on the issue.

With all of the factual information currently available to us with a minimum amount of effort, it seems unfortunate that the loudest and most shrill voices attracting the most attention about this and other important subjects appear to be strongly biased, at best, or willfully ignorant, at worst.

I personally don’t make a habit of seeking out overtly political discussions in social situations, but through purely anecdotal experience — when I have witnessed or been drawn into a debate — I’ve observed that it is often the most boisterous, opinionated participants who are the quickest to anger and also seem to have the thinnest skin when they are challenged. I’m speculating, but it must be kind of a shock to emerge from a broadcast or online experience that completely reaffirms preexisting bias and enter back into a world where differing opinions are expressed.

Over the past few years, I have been exposed to and sought out nonfiction books, articles and documentaries on a variety of subjects that recall the old adage that the truth is stranger than fiction. The authors and filmmakers I admire the most in this realm (now including photojournalist John Moore) are the ones who approach their subjects as a journey of discovery and take us along for the ride — as opposed to a way of reaffirming a preexisting point-of-view.

Speaking of journeys, a recently released documentary provides a vivid example of the power of a nonfiction account of a historical event from 50 years ago. I’m not a movie reviewer, but if you have even the slightest interest in the 1960’s NASA space program, the Apollo 11 documentary currently showing in local theaters is, in my opinion, definitely worth seeing.

Showing much more than telling, the filmmakers have created a fresh and compelling experience from an often told story. After the movie, I couldn’t help but marvel at what was accomplished with just a tiny fraction of the computing power available today and could only trust that we’re using the exponential growth of this power to help solve urgent problems and maybe even do some things that have only been previously imagined.

A year of civic education and advocacy

he White Bear Lake Area League of Women Voters (LWVWBLA) spent an eventful program year engaged in education and advocacy on topics of public interest including high school civics education, national and state policies affecting fair representation and effective citizen advocacy.

The bill requires students to take a separate creditbearing civics course in 11th or 12th grade when they are about to graduate and become voters; ensures experiential learning is integral to formal civics coursework; and directs districts to include in annual school performance reports the percentage of students graduating

in the previous school year who answered 30 questions correctly on the state civics test.

Fair representation was another timely program topic this year.

Fall unit meetings focused on important issues in the looming every-10-year redistricting process: gerrymandering, or manipulating district boundaries to favor one party or an incumbent; voter suppression and manipulation; uncompetitive electoral districts; and possible effects of the citizenship question in the 2020 census, including a population undercount, unfair electoral district boundaries, fewer electoral districts and reduced federal funding in Minnesota. The LWVWBLA supports changing state law to direct an independent redistricting commission, rather than legislators, to re-draw electoral district boundaries to better ensure fair representation.

The LWVWBLA sponsored a public forum in November on voter manipulation and suppression with retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Paul Anderson, and another public forum in February on Minnesota immigrants, the 2020 census, and fair representation with Minnesota Immigrant Law Center attorney, Mirella Ceja-Orozco.

People attending these forums heard differing perspectives on redistricting.

A third public forum in January was dedicated to effective citizen advocacy. An expert panel of retired legislators, Mindy Greiling, Carol McFarlane and Barb Yarusso, and third party gubernatorial candidate,

Ken Pentel, provided a master class on how citizens can effectively advocate at the State Legislature.

The panelists discussed, among other topics, what citizen advocates must know about structure, politics and people at the State Legislature; what citizen advocates must do to access, persuade and prevail at the legislature; and why public policies are rarely developed all at once. They compared the relative effectiveness of professional lobbyists and citizen advocates, and offered advice to citizens interested in changing Minnesota’s redistricting law.

The LWVWBLA’s program year concludes in May with a member report on a two-year study of area police responses to domestic violence. We look forward to another exciting program in 2020 to coincide with the League of Women Voters’ 100th anniversary. Please join us.

BBB tips for coping with flood damage

ith all the snow and rain, some homeowners are fi nding themselves dealing with flooding and mold issues. Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) has some advice for those having to clean up and repair damage from all the water that’s leaked into their homes.

Getting rid of water inside a home can be as easy as vacuuming it up and drying out the room, or as extreme as having to rebuild part of the structure. Mold is also a big issue when moisture or water accumulates indoors. Detecting mold may be difficult because it can be hidden inside walls, under carpet, inside ductwork, or in roofi ng materials above the ceiling, so it’s best to get help from a professional.

Dealing with water damage can be very stressful and naturally, people want to get their homes back in order as soon as possible. However, making some decisions too quickly and without doing the necessary research can make matters worse.

To help property owners navigate the recovery and restoration process, Movers & BBB offers these tips: • Does your Shakers insurance policy Better Business cover flood damage?

Most homeowner’s Bureau insurance policies in Minnesota and North Dakota do not provide flood coverage. This additional coverage needs to be purchased in advance

They may not fully reimburse you for repairs made without their approval. Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm points to the need to address the trend with community-level solutions. “There are many forces driving this increase in preventable deaths, and a key factor is a lack of social connectedness and opportunity,�

Malcolm said. “Our overall health is determined by many factors, and one of the most important is the health of our communities. Things like job opportunities, good education and social connection each play a role in the health of individuals, families and communities. That means strengthening our community is an important step toward addressing these health challenges.�

More Minnesotans died from opioids, alcohol and suicide in 2017 compared to previous years, continuing a long-term trend for individuals, families and entire communities.

In 2017, 422 Minnesotans died from opioids, 636 from alcohol and 783 by suicide, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Since 2000, deaths from all three steadily increased in the state. Many other states have reported similar increases.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Spring Fling Lino Lakes Parks and Recreation will kick off spring with an egg hunt at 6:15 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Lino Lakes Senior Center/City Hall Park, 1189 Main St. Children ages 10 and under can participate in finding as many eggs as possible. Eggs will be hidden in different areas based on age groups. After the egg hunt, participants are invited to enjoy refreshments, create a craft and get their photo taken with the Easter Bunny.

The annual Guns-N-Hoses hockey game on Feb. 28 raised over $4,893 for the Anoka County Peer Support Group, an organization that provides peer support to those in law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatch and other supporting entities.

McAulay finished third all-time in Cougar scoring with 1,402 points and set a slew of records —124 games played (tied Sarah Grow); .870 free throw percentage for season and .812 for career; single-game scoring, 38 points (twice, tied Kiara Allums); single-game free shots, 20, and attempts, 22; single-game steals, 11 (tied Holly Hofland); and season field goal attempts, 453.

Sara Stapleton, who missed 22 games with a knee injury, finished with 1,099 points. She has team blocked shot readers of 91 for a season (last year) and nine in a game (this year, tying Grow).

McAulay averaged 18.6 points, Stapleton 11.8, Anderson 11.7, Lavelle 9.5, Johnson 5.2 and Sanders 5.1.

Cougar gymnasts nab academic award Centennial gymnastics had one all-conference pick, senior Madison Baker, and one honorable mention, sophomore Audrey Noha. The Cougars got the Section 7AA gold academic award for the second straight year, leading with a team GPA of 3.944.

Two names were added to Centennial basketball’s 1,000-Point Club this year as Taylor McAulay and Sara Stapleton each passed the milestone. There are 13 girls and five boys on the list.

Sara Stapleton Sara Stapleton, who will be the first Centennial graduate to play Big Ten basketball, closed her high school career on a high note March 16. The 6-3 center scored 20 points, shooting 8-for-14, to help the Cougars beat Eastview 68-53 in the third-place game, and was named to the all-tournament team later in the day. She scored 47 points in three games at state and finished her career with 1,099 points after missing the first 22 games this year with a knee injury. She has signed with the University of Wisconsin.

Eason, senior guard, was named most valuable player. Wyffels, senior post, was name best defender. Each was included on the allNorthwest Suburban Conference team.

Centennial boys hockey has four all-Northwest Suburban picks after a 10-15-1 season, 7-10 in conference. They are seniors Josh Hermes, Wyatt Clancy and Xan Brouillet, and sophomore Henry Bartle.

Clancy received three team awards: most valuable player, Hobey Baker for character and hardest worker.

Points leaders (goals-assist-points) were Bartle 11-21-32, Hermes 14-8-22 and Clancy 9-12-21. In goal, Casey Coppersmith had six wins, an .888 save percentage and 2.96 goals-against, and Leo Troje four wins, .893 and 3.07.

SCOUTS BSA GIRLS: Members and leaders strive to fulfill all requirements FROM PAGE 1

organizations can choose to continue partnering with only boy troops.

Johnson and Assistant Scoutmaster Pam Smith were part of another troop whose charter organization did welcome girls, but was not “progressing,” said Johnson. As her daughter Maren wanted to join Scouts, Johnson looked for another charter organization and found Our Savior’s Lutheran Church off Lexington Avenue in Circle Pines. “Not only did they want to accept girls,” she said, “they really wanted to promote it.”

Our Savior’s was also looking for female leadership, and since Johnson and Smith both had experience as troop leaders and sons who were Scouts, they became leaders of Troop 65.

As they hoped, the response from the boys’ troop already established at Our Savior’s was receptive.

Smith even recalled how some boys taught the girls knots and knife and axe safety.

As the troop continues to meet, Johnson and Smith ensure that they follow program rules exactly. While there have been no program changes — the Scouts BSA Handbook and requirements are the same, word for word, for both girls and boys, with the exception of gender-neutral language and photos — the women believe there is a risk in being accused of letting girls slack off.

“We don’t want somebody to come back later and say we were ‘soft,’” said Johnson, to which Smith added, “Because in Scouts, not every person is thrilled about this … because (of) that risk that somebody could say, ‘You let them slide on this,’ they’re not going to get their Eagle (rank) then.”

Achieving the Eagle rank, an opportunity that was formerly only available to boys, is a top priority for these girls.

Gaining friendships Learning about knots, knives and other survival and safety skills is one reason why the girls in Troop 65 joined Scouts BSA. The girls also cited outdoor activities such as camping and leadership skills as reasons for joining. The girls all also have brothers who were or are Scouts, and so have participated in Scouting activities indirectly since they were young.

Maren Johnson said she wanted to join Scouts so she could earn her Eagle rank and boast to her brothers that she earned the rank faster than they did. “On the less egotistical side,” she said, “I want to form new friendships that I know will last.”

Earlier this month members of Scouts BSA Troop 65 camped in tents and prepared meals during the Three Rivers District Klondike Derby at Rum River Scout Camp in Ramsey.

Some of the other girls echoed Maren’s sentiment, including Elisabeth Bley, who hoped Scouts would help her “break out of the shell.”

The girls also said that Scouts BSA fosters an environment where friendships can thrive.

Michaela “Micah” Vacco called Scouts a “great place to learn how to fail,” because there is a community that is always supportive.

Maren echoed this sentiment, saying, “Normally, when you fail in life, you know you’re getting judged ... but when you’re at Scouts and you mess up horribly, you laugh it off, you get a friend to help you through it, and you know nobody’s going to judge you.”

She might be speaking from experience. When Maren’s troop had to run or walk a mile to fulfill a Tenderfoot rank requirement, she finished last because of an ankle injury. Yet even after the other girls had completed their mile, they went back to run Maren’s last laps with her. With this newfound support, Maren gained confidence to finish the race.

Gaining character Vacco said what she wants to take away most from Scouts is becoming a better person. She believes that Scouts’ true aim is to “create a better future generation.” For her, evidence of this aim appears in the Scout Oath and Law, because it states what Scouts strive to be every day.

Smith, the assistant Scoutmaster, said that Scouts is

about “developing to be adults of character.” She said activities like knife safety are only tools the program uses to achieve this greater purpose.

Vacco hopes that after leaving Scouts, she can “go forth and help my community, and make a difference in somebody’s else’s life, because Scouts BSA has made such a huge impact on mine.”

Live singing competition added to 2019 Northeast Metro Expo

For the fourth year in a row, the Northeast Metro Expo will bring business and community together in a family-friendly environment.

The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at White Bear Lake Area High School's South Campus. Local businesses, nonprofits, schools and health centers will share information about their services with community members. Food and free entertainment will keep expogoers full and entertained.

New this year is a live singing competition inspired by NBC's popular TV singing competition, “The Voice.” Finalists Julia Wettschreck, Kennedy

Lorraine Tima and Sarah Spaulding will compete live for a $250 grand prize.

Gary LaRue, a singer and owner of Rat Pack Entertainment, helped select the three finalists from submitted video recordings.

“It may sound cliché, but it was really hard to narrow down the submissions to the three chosen finalists,” he said. “Each had passion and talent, which is great, but of course it contributes to the difficulty in narrowing down the field. While it wasn't easy, we eventually decided on the three finalists, and we're looking forward to a great competition.”

The finalists will take the stage shortly after 2 p.m., each performing a handpicked song to a prerecorded instrumental track. Singer Kat Perkins,

a semifinalist in the NBC show's sixth season, will join LaRue and others on the judging panel.

After the winner is crowned, Perkins will perform two songs to help close out the day.

Expo attendees also have the opportunity to show off their own vocal ranges. Prior to the competition, LaRue will lead the crowd in a collective singalong of Neil Diamond's “Sweet Caroline.”

“If all goes well, we'll set Northeast Metro's record for (the) most people singing 'Sweet Caroline' at the same time,” LaRue said.

South Campus is located at 3551 McKnight Road in White Bear Lake.

The annual event is sponsored by the Vadnais Heights Economic Development Council and Press Publications.

The nonprofit award went to HOPE 4 Youth. Founded in 2013, the organization’s mission is to provide pathways to end youth homelessness.

Last year, nearly 900 youth received help. The HOPE 4 Youth Drop-In Center and Pathways 4 Youth’s Youth Opportunity Center had 4,468 visits for hot meals, showers, warm clothes and more. HOPE Clinic, Housing Navigation Program, HOPE Place, HOPE TreeHouse and HOPE 4 Youth on Wheels offer resources.

Blaine named as finalist for ‘City of the Year’ The city of Blaine has been named as a finalist for the 2019 “Minnesota Real Estate Journal” City/ Municipality of the Year. Blaine is one of four finalists along with Apple Valley, Faribault and Fridley. The award winner will be announced on April 11 at the annual Minnesota Real Estate Awards.

Blaine’s nomination highlighted many of the developments that took place in 2018. The nomination also showcased several new programs and incentive deals that were created by city staff to help support business and new development in Blaine. The award ceremony will include many other real estate awards.

ANXIETY: Golden Lake Elementary PTA creates dialogue on anxiety in children FROM PAGE 1

Anxiety doesn’t have a face; it is in students, it is in adults. A lot of adults are very good at hiding it, but kids aren’t as good at hiding it.”

Gerst said that at the most extreme level, he has seen kids with severe anxiety not come to school.

Anxiety to some degree is normal and can actually be helpful, but when it takes over and disrupts one’s ability to function, it can become a real problem. An example of that, Kouba explained, is excessive nervousness, fear or worry.

One parent shared a story about her child riding her bike. The fear of falling became so intense, even though she hadn’t fallen, that she cried for three hours. Another parent said her child had chewed through six winter jackets in one season.

The causes of anxiety vary on a kid-by-kid basis. Sorenson said, “It could be very specific, such as they are anxious for tests or anxious with dogs.

It could be very broad, situational, environmental.”

Kouba noted that at the middle school level, she sees “kids in the classroom who are worried about being able to leave if they have to go to the bathroom, asking for help, being placed in a random group or speaking in front of the class.”

So what can parents do to help their children? Sorenson said parents need to get out of the “fix-it” mentality.

“It is hard, because a lot of times as parents we want to protect or fix, but when you are playing that ‘fix-it’ role with an anxious child, they are not learning the skills themselves to problem-solve,” she explained. “We have to assist them in problem-solving and figuring out their own solutions,

because if we fix it for them all the time, they may not learn how to deal with it and we can feed into their avoidance.”

It is important for parents to not only normalize and validate their child’s feelings, but to also explain to their child that they get anxious too, and model how to deal with it. One tool that can be helpful is creating a “social story” where the child writes down a play-by-play of how they are feeling, what made them feel that way and how they got through it.

Of course, breathing can help too.

Specifically four-square breathing, where you slowly exhale, slowly inhale, hold your breath and exhale again.

When asked if social media is causing more anxiety in youth, both Sorenson and Kouba said it is hard to say, but it can definitely play a role. Kouba said although social media is often talked about in a negative light, it is important to think of some of the pros. Sorenson added, “It can be viewed so negatively, but it can be positive. Sometimes that is all my kids have for social interaction because that face-to-face communication is too much.”

Gerst said another problem they are seeing at the elementary level is chatrooms. “Your typical fourth- and fifth-grade conversations that once took place on the playground now happen in

a chatroom.” He said adding there is a lot of bullying and put-downs.

A popular game right now is Fortnight, where kids are dropped into a virtual world and play a game similar to Capture the Flag; however, it involves guns and trying to kill each other.

Gerst said that in the chatrooms, kids will often threaten one another, which creates a grey area: is it a real threat, or just part of the game?

“These games don’t have a beginning, middle and end, they go on forever. So students sometimes have a hard time transitioning because they don’t know what it means to end something. It is just one more level ...”

One thing that is important for parents to know is just because their child is dealing with anxiety right now does not necessarily mean they will have it forever.

“There is no pattern,” said Gerst.

“What works one day might not work the next. There is no book that says it all ... We figure out what works, we figure out some stuff that doesn’t work for them, and that is okay.”
