No April Fools’ joke: Down Under ‘kaput’ It is not an April Fools’ joke. The Down Under is no more. It’s done for. It’s...history. The old building, which was located at 10100 Lake Drive, was demolished by Nitti Roll-Off & Demolition Services Inc. Thursday, April 4. Demolition started around 7 a.m. and by noon all that was left was a pile of rubble with only one beam left standing. See more photos on page 11.

One in five students has a language-based learning disability. Parents in the Centennial School District hope a recently formed group will create awareness and offer support for parents of students with dyslexia. Centennial Dyslexia Connection held its fi rst meeting March 21 at Rice Lake Elementary (RLE). Founder Jessica Friedman came up with the idea for the group after she discovered her fi fth-grade son struggles with dyslexia. “We didn’t know until this year that it was a problem,” she said. “Some of his scores were really low on some of the standardized tests and so we asked for an evaluation. Through the evaluation we found out that he struggles with certain parts of language that fit the profi le of dyslexia.” Friedman thought the group would be a great place for parents to turn and offer support for one another. Filling children's lives with magic, 1 wig at a time BY SHANNON GRANHOLM EDITOR

Since its founding in 2014, The Magic Yarn Project has delivered well over 12,000 wigs to 48 countries. In January, the first state chapter of the project was founded by Ham Lake (former Circle Pines) resident Gwyn Yuhanna. “The biggest thing about having this chapter, is not only are we making wigs here in Minnesota, but we are delivering them here to kids in Minnesota,” Yuhanna explained. She said that before the chapter was created, she had to send all the wigs she made to her region's headquarters in Kansas. Yuhanna found out about The Magic Yarn Project after stumbling across the website. She used to crochet, and she wanted

to see if she could pick it back up. After watching videos on YouTube and getting help from her sisterin-law, she succeeded. “I just got crazy with it. By the end of the year I made over 200 wigs.” The Magic Yarn Project is a nonprofit organization based out of Palmer, Alaska. The organization's mission is to bring magic into the lives of children battling cancer and inspire volunteerism to make a difference. Chemotherapy treatments often leave young scalps too sensitive for traditional wigs, so the project's yarn wigs are comfy, soft and warm. The wigs are inspired by Disney characters and invite children back to the world of play and daydreaming during scary times. Yuhanna said the most popular wigs are based on Disney’s Ariel, Elsa and Rapunzel. Other

characters include Belle, Moana, Minions, Jack Sparrow, SpiderMan and Captain Marvel. To be able to start the first Minnesota chapter, Yuhanna attended a four-day training in Cincinnati and applied to be a chapter leader. The chapter has already hosted two public workshops at the Lino Lakes Public Safety Department in addition to four other private workshops. “As a chapter leader, my goal is to complete 100 wigs this year. I also have a fundraising goal to cover the startup costs and the cost of supplies for the beanies and wigs,” Yuhanna said. “The estimated value of each wig is $50.” SHANNON GRANHOLM | PRESS PUBLICATIONS At the workshops, attendees help assemble the wigs, which are Kristina Bunde, of Cottage Grove, helps assemble a wig at a Magic SEE MAGIC YARN PROJECT, PAGE 9
