Gavin Pritzl had the birthday of a lifetime April 7, when thousands of cars drove by his home in Blaine on his 11th birthday.

McLaren, DeLorean, Lamborghini, Vanderhall, Lotus Elise, Corvette, Ferrari — you name it, it was there. It all started when Blaine resident Amy DeMent put a call out on social media. “My son Gavin's 11th birthday is on April 7 and, sadly, there will be no party. He has autism and loves cars. So I would like

to see you drive by and honk for him ... It's the little things that count.” Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, DeMent still wanted to do something special for Gavin, who is a fi fth grader at Golden Lake Elementary. She thought maybe 30 cars would show up, but she had no idea that car and bike lovers from all over the state would roll by their home on 93rd Avenue in Blaine. “It was amazing. I never in my wildest dreams

LINO LAKES —The City Council has decided the best thing to do for this year is to cancel Blue Heron Days along with all summer programs and events. At the April 6 work session, held via teleconferencing, City Administrator Jeff Karlson and Public Services Director Rick DeGardner solicited direction from the council on whether Blue Heron Days and the city's summer programs and events should be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have been wrestling with whether or not to cancel summer programs,” Karlson said. “In order to make those happen, we need to get the vendors, sponsors and employees in place ... Right now, with the way things stand, we are of the feeling that we don't know that it is a good time at this point to start lining up seasonal staff and vendors and getting everything in place. Our recommendation at this point is to cancel our summer programs.” Mayor Rob Rafferty wondered even if events were still able to happen, whether people would feel comfortable enough to attend. “Maybe it is better to rest on it and let things get back to a normal state,” he said. DeGardner said, “We just think realistically, with everything you see on

Funeral homes continue to support families through pandemic Funeral services may look very different these days, but area funeral homes want the community to know that they are still there to help with the grief journey in any way they can. About a month ago, funeral homes were told they could still host services with 50 people or fewer in attendance. If a majority

of attendees were in the highrisk category for COVID-19, that number went down to 10. When Gov. Tim Walz initially issued the stay-at-home order March 27, funeral homes were told to stop offering services. Over the following weekend, that restriction was eased so that funeral homes could continue to be open. Services, however, are limited to 10 people or fewer, a restriction that is in effect until May 4, but may be extended.

Mueller-Bies Funeral Home Mueller-Bies Funeral Home, which has locations in Lino Lakes and Roseville, posted the following statement on its website: “Losing a loved one is never easy, and the uncertainty of our present situation compounds the difficulty. Funerals are an essential part of the grieving process, bringing people together to share their grief SEE FUNERAL HOMES, PAGE 2
