New golf tournament ‘just the beginning’ BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR
The Centennial Area Education Foundation (CAEF) is working to diversify its offerings, all in hopes of reaching different members of the community for a broader impact. CAEF will launch its first golf tournament July 17 at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake. “This gives us a chance to bring in some new eyes and really spread the mission of CAEF, supporting education to build a stronger community,” said CAEF Office Manager Lisa Sellner. “By providing a variety of events, we are building a stronger community of people, of supporters.” CAEF is a nonprofit organization comprised of volunteers from the community who are dedicated to raising money to enrich students’ experience in Centennial Schools. CAEF’s largest fundraiser is its annual Gala, held in April. Because of the pandemic, this is the second year in which the event has not been able to take place. In 2020, CAEF board members canceled the Gala and quickly
‘The Dance’ marks Centennial students’ return to the stage JACKIE BUSSJAEGER | PRESS PUBLICATIONS
Centennial High School students perform a musical number in a rehearsal of “The Dance.”
Centennial students knew the rules would be a little different when they returned to the stage— but they didn’t care. They are happy just to be back together. “The Dance” is the name of the Centennial theater department’s
spring play, which marks the first opportunity for the high school students to return to inperson performance. The script was specially commissioned for Centennial schools and written by Twin Cities playwright Shanan Custer. During the first few months of COVID-19, creators were struggling to find outlets
for their usual work under the intense public safety restrictions. Co-director Eric Webster reached out to Custer and several accomplished Twin Cities musicians to collaborate on something that could be specifically designed to work in the midst of a pandemic.

Centennial Schools explores online school options for 2021-22 BY SHANNON GRANHOLM LEAD EDITOR
Although distance learning has brought about challenges for students and their families, it turns out there is an interest for that option to continue. Earlier this month, the Centennial School District sent out a nonbinding survey to families with children who are currently enrolled in grades K-7. The survey asked one question: “If offered, would you consider enrolling your child(ren) in distance

learning (online learning) for the 2021-22 school year?” High school families were not included in this survey, as the district previously surveyed that group. There was not enough interest needed to launch an online program, however the high school will offer five hybrid classes in the fall, which will include: World Literature, Government, Health, Computer Science and German. “We took the opportunity to try to learn and ensure that as we make decisions for next year, there are
